We present a near infrared (NIR) candidate star cluster catalog for the central kiloparsec of M82 based on new JWST NIRCam images. We identify star cluster candidates using the F250M filter, finding 1357 star cluster candidates with stellar masses $>10^4$ M$_\odot$. Compared to previous optical catalogs, nearly all (87%) of the candidates we identify are new. The star cluster candidates have a median intrinsic cluster radius of $\approx$1 pc and have stellar masses up to $10^6$ M$_\odot$. By comparing the color-color diagram to dust-free yggdrasil stellar population models, we estimate that the star cluster candidates have A$_{\rm V}\sim3-24$ mag, corresponding to A$_{\rm 2.5\mu m}\sim0.3-2.1$ mag. There is still appreciable dust extinction towards these clusters into the NIR. We measure the stellar masses of the star cluster candidates, assuming ages of 0 and 8 Myr. The slope of the resulting cluster mass function is $\beta=1.9\pm0.2$, in excellent agreement with studies of star clusters in other galaxies., Comment: Resubmitted to ApJL

The gas-phase velocity dispersions in disk galaxies, which trace turbulence in the interstellar medium, are observed to increase with lookback time. However, the mechanisms that set this rise in turbulence are observationally poorly constrained. To address this, we combine kiloparsec-scale ALMA observations of CO(3-2) and CO(4-3) with HST observations of H$\alpha$ to characterize the molecular gas and star formation properties of seven local analogues of main sequence galaxies at $z \sim 1-2$, drawn from the DYNAMO sample. Investigating the ''molecular gas main sequence'' on kpc-scales, we find that galaxies in our sample are more gas-rich than local star-forming galaxies at all disk positions. We measure beam smearing corrected molecular gas velocity dispersions and relate them to the molecular gas and star formation rate surface densities. Despite being relatively nearby ($z \sim 0.1$), DYNAMO galaxies exhibit high velocity dispersions and gas and star formation rate surface densities throughout their disks, when compared to local star forming samples. Comparing these measurements to predictions from star formation theory, we find very good agreements with the latest feedback-regulated star formation models. While most galaxies live in group environments where they undergo an accelerated evolution, the characteristics of their circumgalactic medium (CGM) remain uncertain. We present an analysis of the CGM of two galaxy groups in different stages of interaction: (G1) a close pair of galaxies ($z=0.043$) separated by 87 kpc that do not show signs of interactions and (G2) four merging galaxies ($z=0.098$) separated by 10 kpc. We present spatially-resolved Keck/KCWI galaxy observations and HST/COS quasar spectra (G1 at 48 kpc and G2 at 100 kpc away) to quantify both the resolved galaxy and CGM properties in these two different group environments. G1 contains two typical star-forming galaxies with no evidence of strong outflows. G2 contains two star-forming, one post-starburst and one quiescent galaxy. Both groups have a range of CGM detected metal lines (HI, CII, SiII, SiIII, NV and OVI). Despite G2 being twice as far from the quasar, G2 has $\log (N(HI)/{\rm cm}^{-2})=17.33$, compared to $\log (N(HI)/{\rm cm}^{-2})=16.43$ for G1. We find that the CGM of the merging galaxies (G2) is more kinematically complex, is in a higher ionisation state, spans a wider range of metallicities and column densities, has smaller cloud sizes, and is inconsistent with the simple superposition model that seems to match well with G1. We conclude that the complexity of the CGM in merging galaxies surpasses that of not strongly interacting galaxies, suggesting that mergers play a significant role in shaping the intricate structure of the CGM., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS May 17th 2024

In this paper we study the filamentary substructure of 3.3 $\mu$m PAH emission from JWST/NIRCam observations in the base of the M82 star-burst driven wind. We identify plume-like substructure within the PAH emission with widths of $\sim$50 pc. Several of the plumes extend to the edge of the field-of-view, and thus are at least 200-300 pc in length. In this region of the outflow, the vast majority ($\sim$70\%) of PAH emission is associated with the plumes. We show that those structures contain smaller scale "clouds" with widths that are $\sim$5-15 pc, and they are morphologically similar to the results of "cloud-crushing" simulations. We estimate the cloud-crushing time-scales of $\sim$0.5-3 Myr, depending on assumptions. We show this time scale is consistent with a picture in which these observed PAH clouds survived break-out from the disk rather than being destroyed by the hot wind. The PAH emission in both the midplane and the outflow is shown to tightly correlate with that of Pa$\alpha$ emission (from HST/NICMOS data), at the scale of both plumes and clouds, though the ratio of PAH-to-Pa$\alpha$ increases at further distances from the midplane. Finally, we show that the outflow PAH emission is suppressed in regions of the M82 wind that are bright in X-ray emission. Overall, our results are broadly consistent with a picture in which cold gas in galactic outflows is launched via hierarchically structured plumes, and those small scale clouds are more likely to survive the wind environment when collected into the larger plume structure., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

We present the results of direct-method metallicity measurements in the disk and outflow of the low-metallicity starburst galaxy NGC 1569. We use Keck Cosmic Web Imager observations to map the galaxy across 54$\arcsec$ (800 pc) along the major axis and 48$\arcsec$ (700 pc) along the minor axis with a spatial resolution of 1$\arcsec$ ($\sim$15 pc). We detect common strong emission lines ([\ion{O}{III}] $\lambda$5007, H$\beta$, [\ion{O}{II}] $\lambda$3727) and the fainter [\ion{O}{III}] $\lambda$4363 auroral line, which allows us to measure electron temperature ($T_e$) and metallicity. Theory suggests that outflows drive metals out of the disk driving observed trends between stellar mass and gas-phase metallicity. Our main result is that the metallicity in the outflow is similar to that of the disk, $Z_{\rm out} / Z_{\rm ISM} \approx 1$. This is consistent with previous absorption line studies in higher mass galaxies. Assumption of a mass-loading factor of $\dot{M}_{\rm out}/{\rm SFR}\sim3$ makes the metal-loading of NGC 1569 consistent with expectations derived from the mass-metallicity relationship. Our high spatial resolution metallicity maps reveal a region around a supermassive star cluster (SSC-B) with distinctly higher metallicity and higher electron density, compared to the disk. Given the known properties of SSC-B the higher metallicity and density of this region are likely the result of star formation-driven feedback acting on the local scale. Overall, our results are consistent with the picture in which metal-enriched winds pollute the circumgalactic medium surrounding galaxies, and thus connect the small-scale feedback processes to large-scale properties of galaxy halos., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We measure resolved (kiloparsec-scale) outflow properties in a sample of 10 starburst galaxies from the DUVET sample, using Keck/KCWI observations of H$\beta$ and [OIII]~$\lambda$5007. We measure $\sim450$ lines-of-sight that contain outflows, and use these to study scaling relationships of outflow velocity ($v_{\rm out}$), mass-loading factor ($\eta$; mass outflow rate per SFR) and mass flux ($\dot{\Sigma}_{\rm out}$; mass outflow rate per area) with co-located SFR surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) and stellar mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\ast}$). We find strong, positive correlations of $\dot{\Sigma}_{\rm out} \propto \Sigma_{\rm SFR}^{1.2}$ and $\dot{\Sigma}_{\rm out} \propto \Sigma_{\ast}^{1.7}$. We also find shallow correlations between $v_{\rm out}$ and both $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ and $\Sigma_{\ast}$. Our resolved observations do not suggest a threshold in outflows with $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, but rather we find that the local specific SFR ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}/\Sigma_\ast$) is a better predictor of where outflows are detected. We find that outflows are very common above $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}/\Sigma_\ast\gtrsim 0.1$~Gyr$^{-1}$ and rare below this value. We argue that our results are consistent with a picture in which outflows are driven by supernovae, and require more significant injected energy in higher mass surface density environments to overcome local gravity. We present new observations of the central 1 kpc of the M 82 starburst obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) near-infrared camera (NIRCam) instrument at a resolution ~0.05"-0.1" (~1-2 pc). The data comprises images in three mostly continuum filters (F140M, F250M, and F360M), and filters that contain [FeII] (F164N), H2 v=1-0 (F212N), and the 3.3 um PAH feature (F335M). We find prominent plumes of PAH emission extending outward from the central starburst region, together with a network of complex filamentary substructure and edge-brightened bubble-like features. The structure of the PAH emission closely resembles that of the ionized gas, as revealed in Paschen alpha and free-free radio emission. We discuss the origin of the structure, and suggest the PAHs are embedded in a combination of neutral, molecular, and photoionized gas., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

Most of a galaxy's mass is located out to hundreds of kiloparsecs beyond its stellar component. This diffuse reservoir of gas, the circumgalactic medium (CGM), acts as the interface between a galaxy and the cosmic web that connects galaxies. We present kiloparsec-scale resolution integral field spectroscopy of emission lines that trace cool ionized gas from the center of a nearby galaxy to 30 kpc into its CGM. We find a smooth surface brightness profile with a break in slope at twice the 90% stellar radius. The gas also transitions from being photoionized by HII star-forming regions in the disk to being ionized by shocks or the extragalactic UV background at larger distances. These changes represent the boundary between the interstellar medium (ISM) and the CGM, revealing how the dominant reservoir of baryonic matter directly connects to its galaxy., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 2 extended data figures, 2 tables. We present a method to characterize star-formation driven outflows from edge-on galaxies and apply this method to the metal-poor starburst galaxy, Mrk 1486. Our method uses the distribution of emission line flux (from H$\beta$ and [OIII] 5007) to identify the location of the outflow and measure the extent above the disk, the opening angle, and the transverse kinematics. We show that this simple technique recovers a similar distribution of the outflow without requiring complex modelling of line-splitting or multi-Gaussian components, and is therefore applicable to lower spectral resolution data. In Mrk 1486 we observe an asymmetric outflow in both the location of the peak flux and total flux from each lobe. We estimate an opening angle of $17-37^{\circ}$ depending on the method and assumptions adopted. Within the minor axis outflows, we estimate a total mass outflow rate of $\sim2.5$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, which corresponds to a mass loading factor of $\eta=0.7$. We observe a non-negligible amount of flux from ionized gas outflowing along the edge of the disk (perpendicular to the biconical components), with a mass outflow rate $\sim0.9$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. Our results are intended to demonstrate a method that can be applied to high-throughput, low spectral resolution observations, such as narrow band filters or low spectral resolution IFS that may be more able to recover the faint emission from outflows., Comment: 12 Pages, 6 Figures

In Paper I we showed that clumps in high-redshift galaxies, having a high star formation rate density (\Sigma_SFR), produce disks with two tracks in the [Fe/H]-[\alpha/Fe] chemical space, similar to that of the Milky Way's (MW's) thin + thick disks. Here we investigate the effect of clumps on the bulge's chemistry. The chemistry of the MW's bulge is comprised of a single track with two density peaks separated by a trough. We show that the bulge chemistry of an N-body + smoothed particle hydrodynamics clumpy simulation also has a single track. Star formation within the bulge is itself in the high-\Sigma_SFR clumpy mode, which ensures that the bulge's chemical track follows that of the thick disk at low [Fe/H] and then extends to high [Fe/H], where it peaks. The peak at low metallicity instead is comprised of a mixture of in-situ stars and stars accreted via clumps. As a result, the trough between the peaks occurs at the end of the thick disk track. We find that the high-metallicity peak dominates near the mid-plane and declines in relative importance with height, as in the MW. The bulge is already rapidly rotating by the end of the clump epoch, with higher rotation at low [\alpha/Fe]. Thus clumpy star formation is able to simultaneously explain the chemodynamic trends of the MW's bulge, thin + thick disks and the Splash., Comment: 25 pages, in press at ApJ

The spectral line energy distribution of carbon monoxide contains information about the physical conditions of the star forming molecular hydrogen gas; however, the relation to local radiation field properties is poorly constrained. Using ~ 1-2 kpc scale ALMA observations of CO(3-2) and CO(4-3), we characterize the CO(4-3)/CO(3-2) line ratios of local analogues of main sequence galaxies at z ~ 1-2, drawn from the DYNAMO sample. We measure CO(4-3)/CO(3-2) across the disk of each galaxy and find a median line ratio of $R_{43} = 0.54^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$ for the sample. This is higher than literature estimates of local star-forming galaxies and is consistent with multiple lines of evidence that indicate DYNAMO galaxies, despite residing in the local Universe, resemble main-sequence galaxies at z ~ 1-2. Comparing to existing lower resolution CO(1-0) observations, we find $R_{41}$ and $R_{31}$ values in the range $\sim 0.2-0.3$ and $\sim 0.4-0.8$ respectively. We combine our kpc-scale resolved line ratio measurements with HST observations of H$\alpha$ to investigate the relation to star formation rate surface density and compare this relation to expectations from models. We find increasing CO(4-3)/CO(3-2) with increasing star formation rate surface density; however, models over-predict the line ratios across the range of star formation rate surface densities we probe, particularly at the lower range. Finally, SOFIA observations with HAWC+ and FIFI-LS reveal low dust temperatures and no deficit of [CII] emission with respect to the total infrared luminosity., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, ApJ accepted

We compare 500~pc scale, resolved observations of ionised and molecular gas for the $z\sim0.02$ starbursting disk galaxy IRAS08339+6517, using measurements from KCWI and NOEMA. We explore the relationship of the star formation driven ionised gas outflows with colocated galaxy properties. We find a roughly linear relationship between the outflow mass flux ($\dot{\Sigma}_{\rm out}$) and star formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$), $\dot{\Sigma}_{\rm out}\propto\Sigma_{\rm SFR}^{1.06\pm0.10}$, and a strong correlation between $\dot{\Sigma}_{\rm out}$ and the gas depletion time, such that $\dot{\Sigma}_{\rm out} \propto t_{dep}^{-1.1\pm0.06}$. Moreover, we find these outflows are so-called ``breakout" outflows, according to the relationship between the gas fraction and disk kinematics. Assuming that ionised outflow mass scales with total outflow mass, our observations suggest that the regions of highest $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ in IRAS08 are removing more gas via the outflow than through the conversion of gas into stars. Our results are consistent with a picture in which the outflow limits the ability for a region of a disk to maintain short depletion times. In this paper we use HST/WFC3 observations of 6 galaxies from the DYNAMO survey, combined with stellar population modelling of the SED, to determine the stellar masses of DYNAMO clumps. The DYNAMO sample has been shown to have properties similar to $z\approx1.5$ turbulent, clumpy disks. DYNAMO sample clump masses offer a useful comparison for studies of $z>1$ in that the galaxies have the same properties, yet the observational biases are significantly different. Using DYNAMO we can more easily probe rest-frame near-IR wavelengths and also probe finer spatial scales. We find that the stellar mass of DYNAMO clumps is typically $10^{7}-10^8 \mathrm{M}_\odot$. We employ a technique that makes non-parametric corrections in removal of light from nearby clumps, and carries out a locally determined disk subtraction. The process of disk subtraction is the dominant effect, and can alter clump masses at the 0.3~dex level. Using these masses, we investigate the stellar mass function of clumps in DYNAMO galaxies. DYNAMO stellar mass functions follow a declining power law with slope $\alpha \approx -1.4$, which is slightly shallower than, but similar to what is observed in $z>1$ lensed galaxies. We compare DYNAMO clump masses to results of simulations. The masses and galactocentric position of clumps in DYNAMO galaxies are more similar to long-lived clumps in simulations. Similar to recent DYNAMO results on the stellar population gradients, these results are consistent with simulations that do not employ strong "early" radiative feedback prescriptions., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We study star formation driven outflows in a $z\sim0.02$ starbursting disk galaxy, IRAS08339+6517, using spatially resolved measurements from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). We develop a new method incorporating a multi-step process to determine whether an outflow should be fit in each spaxel, and then subsequently decompose the emission line into multiple components. We detect outflows ranging in velocity, $v_{\rm out}$, from $100-600$ km s$^{-1}$ across a range of star formation rate surface densities, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, from $\sim$0.01-10 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$ in resolution elements of a few hundred parsec. Outflows are detected in $\sim100\%$ of all spaxels within the half-light radius, and $\sim70\%$ within $r_{90}$, suggestive of a high covering fraction for this starbursting disk galaxy. Around $2/3$ of the total outflowing mass originates from the star forming ring, which corresponds to $<10\%$ of the total area of the galaxy. We find that the relationship between $v_{\rm out}$ and the $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, as well as between the mass loading factor, $\eta$, and the $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, are consistent with trends expected from energy-driven feedback models. We study the resolution effects on this relationship and find stronger correlations above a re-binned size-scale of $\sim500$ pc. We present a case study of stellar clumps in G04-1, a clumpy, turbulent disk galaxy located at $z$ = 0.13 from the DYNAMO sample, using adaptive optics enabled K-band imaging ($\sim2.25$ kpc/arcsec) with Keck/NIRC2. We identify 15 stellar clumps in G04-1 with a range of masses from $3.6 \times 10^{6}$ to $2.7 \times 10^{8}\ \rm M_{\odot}$, and with a median mass of $\sim2.9 \times 10^{7}\ \rm M_{\odot}$. Note that these masses decrease by about one-half when we apply a light correction for the underlying stellar disk. A majority (12 of 15) of clumps observed in the $K_{P}$-band imaging have associated components in H$\alpha$ maps ($\sim2.75$ kpc/arcsec; $<$R$_{clump}> \sim$500 pc) and appear co-located ($\overline{\Delta x} \sim 0.1$ arcsec). Using Hubble Space Telescope WFC/ACS observations with the F336W and F467M filters, we also find evidence of radial trends in clump stellar properties: clumps closer to the centre of G04-1 are more massive (consistent with observations at high-$z$) and appear more red, suggesting they may be more evolved. Using our high-resolution data, we construct a star forming main sequence for G04-1 in terms of spatially-resolved quantities and find that all regions (both clump and intra-clump) within the galaxy are experiencing an enhanced mode of star formation routinely observed in galaxies at high-$z$. In comparison to recent simulations, our observation of a number of clumps with masses $10^{7}-10^{8}\ \rm M_{\odot}$ is not consistent with strong radiative feedback in this galaxy., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. We present detailed stellar specific angular momentum ($j_*$) measurements of ten star-forming galaxies at $z\sim1.5-2$ using both high and low spatial resolution integral field spectroscopic data. We developed a code that simultaneously models the adaptive optics (AO) assisted observations from OSIRIS/SINFONI along with their natural seeing (NS) counterparts from KMOS at spatial resolutions of [$0.1-0.4$] arcsec and [$0.6-1.0$] arcsec respectively. The AO data reveals 2/10 systems to be mergers and for the remaining eight the mean uncertainties $\bar \Delta j_*$ decrease from 49% (NS), and 26.5% (AO), to 16% in the combined analysis. These $j_*$ measurements agree within 20% with simple estimates ($\tilde{j_*}$) calculated from the Hubble Space Telescope photometry and NS kinematics, however higher resolution kinematics are required to first identify these disks. We find that the choice of surface mass density model and the measurement of effective radius from photometry are the key sources of systematic effects in the measurement of $j_*$ between different analyses. Fitting the $j_*$ vs $M_*$ relations (Fall, 1983) with a fixed power-law slope of $\beta=2/3$, we find a zero-point consistent with prior NS results at $z\geq1$ within $\sim 0.3$ dex. Finally, we find a $\sim 0.38$ dex scatter about that relation that remains high despite the AO data so we conclude it is intrinsic to galaxies at $z>1$. This compares to a scatter of $\leq 0.2$ dex for disks at $z\simeq0$ pointing to a settling of the Fall relation with cosmic time., Comment: 29 pages (21 for the paper and 8 for a supplementary section), 31 figures. We present electron temperature ($T_e$) maps for the edge-on system Mrk 1486, affording "direct-method" gas-phase metallicity measurements across $5.\!\!^{\prime\prime}8$ (4.1 kpc) along the minor axis and $9.\!\!^{\prime\prime}9$ (6.9 kpc) along the major axis. These maps, enabled by strong detections of the [OIII]$\lambda$4363 auroral emission line across a large spatial extent of Mrk 1486, reveal a clear negative minor axis $T_e$ gradient in which temperature decreases with increasing distance from the disk plane. We find that the lowest metallicity spaxels lie near the extremes of the major axis, while the highest metallicity spaxels lie at large spatial offsets along the minor axis. This is consistent with a picture in which low metallicity inflows dilute the metallicity at the edges of the major axis of the disk, while star formation drives metal-enriched outflows along the minor axis. We find that the outflow metallicity in Mrk 1486 is 0.20 dex (1.6 times) higher than the average ISM metallicity, and more than 0.80 dex (6.3 times) higher than metal-poor inflowing gas, which we observe to be below 5 % $Z_\odot$. This is the first example of metallicity measurements made simultaneously for inflowing, outflowing, and inner disk ISM gas using consistent $T_e$-based methodology. To indirectly study the internal structure of giant clumps in main sequence galaxies at $z \sim 1-3$, we target very turbulent and gas-rich local analogues from the DYNAMO sample with the Hubble Space Telescope, over a wavelength range of $\sim 200-480$ nm. We present a catalog of 58 clumps identified in six DYNAMO galaxies, including the WFC3/UVIS F225W, F336W, and F467M photometry where the ($225-336$) and ($336-467$) colours are sensitive to extinction and stellar population age respectively. We measure the internal colour gradients of clumps themselves to study their age and extinction properties. We find a marked colour trend within individual clumps, where the resolved colour distributions show that clumps generally have bluer ($336-467$) colours (denoting very young ages) in their centers than at their edges, with little variation in the ($225-336$) colour associated with extinction. Furthermore, we find that clumps whose colours suggest they are older, are preferentially located closer toward the centers of their galaxies, and we find no young clumps at small galactocentric distances. Both results are consistent with simulations of high-redshift star forming systems that show clumps form via violent disk instability, and through dynamic processes migrate to the centers of their galaxies to contribute to bulge growth on timescales of a few 100 Myr, while continually forming stars in their centers. In the local (redshift z~0) Universe, collisional ring galaxies make up only ~0.01% of galaxies and are formed by head-on galactic collisions that trigger radially propagating density waves. These striking systems provide key snapshots for dissecting galactic disks and are studied extensively in the local Universe. However, not much is known about distant (z>0.1) collisional rings. Here we present a detailed study of a ring galaxy at a look-back time of 10.8 Gyr (z=2.19). Compared with our Milky Way, this galaxy has a similar stellar mass, but has a stellar half-light radius that is 1.5-2.2 times larger and is forming stars 50 times faster. The large, diffuse stellar light outside the star-forming ring, combined with a radial velocity on the ring and an intruder galaxy nearby, provides evidence for this galaxy hosting a collisional ring. If the ring is secularly evolved, the implied large bar in a giant disk would be inconsistent with the current understanding of the earliest formation of barred spirals. Contrary to previous predictions, this work suggests that massive collisional rings were as rare 11 Gyr ago as they are today. We infer the intrinsic ionised gas kinematics for 383 star-forming galaxies across a range of integrated star-formation rates (SFR $\in [10^{-3}, 10^2]$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) at $z \lesssim 0.1$ using a consistent 3D forward-modelling technique. The total sample is a combination of galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey and DYNAMO survey. For typical low-$z$ galaxies taken from the SAMI Galaxy Survey, we find the vertical velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{v, z}$) to be positively correlated with measures of star-formation rate, stellar mass, HI gas mass, and rotational velocity. The greatest correlation is with star-formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_\text{SFR}$). Using the total sample, we find $\sigma_{v, z}$ increases slowly as a function of integrated star-formation rate in the range SFR $\in$ [$10^{-3}$, 1] M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ from $17\pm3$ km s$^{-1}$ to $24\pm5$ km s$^{-1}$ followed by a steeper increase up to $\sigma_{v, z}$ $\sim 80$ km s$^{-1}$ for SFR $\gtrsim 1$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. This is consistent with recent theoretical models that suggest a $\sigma_{v, z}$ floor driven by star-formation feedback processes with an upturn in $\sigma_{v, z}$ at higher SFR driven by gravitational transport of gas through the disc., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, accepted for MNRAS

We study the spatially-resolved stellar specific angular momentum $j_*$ in a high-quality sample of 24 CALIFA galaxies covering a broad range of visual morphology, accounting for stellar velocity and velocity dispersion. The shape of the spaxel-wise probability density function of normalised $s=j_*/j_{*mean}$, PDF($s$), deviates significantly from the near-universal initial distribution expected of baryons in a dark matter halo and can be explained by the expected baryonic effects in galaxy formation that remove and redistribute angular momentum. Further we find that the observed shape of the PDF($s$) correlates significantly with photometric morphology, where late-type galaxies have PDF($s$) that is similar to a normal distribution, whereas early types have a strongly-skewed PDF($s$) resulting from an excess of low-angular momentum material. Galaxies that are known to host pseudobulges (bulge Sersic index $n_b <2.2$) tend to have less skewed bulge PDF($s$), with skewness $(b_{1rb})\lesssim0.8$. The PDF($s$) encodes both kinematic and photometric information and appears to be a robust tracer of morphology. Its use is motivated by the desire to move away from traditional component-based classifications which are subject to observer bias, to classification on a galaxy's fundamental (stellar mass, angular momentum) properties. We present stellar specific angular momentum $j_*$ measurements of two $z\sim 1.5$ galaxies in the KGES sample and 12 DYNAMO $z\sim 0.1$ analogues of high-redshift galaxies. We combine natural seeing integral field spectroscopic data to trace line emission out to high multiples of effective radius $r_e$, with adaptive optics assisted Keck/OSIRIS observations to trace the rapid rise in rotation curve in the inner regions. Our spaxel-wise integration method gives results that are on average within measurement uncertainty of the traditional rotation curve model method. At $z\sim 0$, combining GMOS and OSIRIS datasets improves the measurement uncertainty in $j_*$ from 13\% (GMOS only) or 16\% (OSIRIS only) to 10\%. At $z\sim 1.5$, systematics allow for at best 20\% uncertainty on $j_*$. DYNAMO analogues of high-$z$ galaxies have low $j_*$ for their stellar mass $M_*$, and low bulge-to-total light ratio $\beta$ for their $j_*/M_*$. The high-$z$ galaxy COSMOS 127977 has $j_*/M_*$ consistent with normal local disk galaxies, while UDS 78317 is consistent with local analogues. However, our high-resolution OSIRIS data reveal that UDS 78317 may be a merging system. We report a relationship between distance to the $\beta-j_*/M_*$ plane and the ratio of velocity dispersion to rotational velocity $\sigma/v_{max}$, where galaxies that deviate more from the plane are more dispersion-dominated due to turbulence. We explore the scaling between the size of star-forming clumps and rotational support in massively star-forming galactic disks. The analysis relies on simulations of a clumpy galaxy at $z=2$ and the observed DYNAMO sample of rare clumpy analogs at $z\approx0.1$ to test a predictive clump size scaling proposed by \citet{Fisher2017ApJ...839L...5F} in the context of the Violent Disk Instability (VDI) theory. We here determine the clump sizes using a recently presented 2-point estimator, which is robust against resolution/noise effects, hierarchical clump substructure, clump-clump overlap and other galactic substructure. After verifying Fisher's clump scaling relation for the DYNAMO observations, we explore whether this relation remains characteristic of the VDI theory, even if realistic physical processes, such as local asymetries and stellar feedback, are included in the model. To this end, we rely on hydrodynamic zoom-simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy with four different feedback prescriptions. We find that, during its marginally stable epoch at $z=2$, this mock galaxy falls on the clump scaling relation, although its position on this relation depends on the feedback model. This finding implies that Toomre-like stability considerations approximately apply to large ($\sim\rm kpc$) instabilities in marginally stable turbulent disks, irrespective of the feedback model, but also emphasizes that the global clump distribution of a turbulent disk depends strongly on feedback., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, no changes made. 11 pages, 4 figures

The disc structure of the Milky Way is marked by a chemical dichotomy, with high-alpha and low-alpha abundance sequences, traditionally identified with the geometric thick and thin discs. This identification is aided by the old ages of the high-alpha stars, and lower average ages of the low-alpha ones. Recent large scale surveys such as APOGEE have provided a wealth of data on this chemical structure, including showing that an identification of chemical and geometric thick discs is not exact, but the origin of the chemical dichotomy has remained unclear. Here we demonstrate that a dichotomy arises naturally if the early gas-rich disc fragments, leading to some fraction of the star formation occurring in clumps of the type observed in high-redshift galaxies. These clumps have high star formation rate density. They, therefore, enrich rapidly, moving from the low-alpha to the high-alpha sequence, while more distributed star formation produces the low-alpha sequence. We demonstrate that this model produces a chemically-defined thick disc that has many of the properties of the Milky Way's thick disc. Because clump formation is common in high redshift galaxies, we predict that chemical bimodalities are common in massive galaxies., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

In this paper we compare the molecular gas depletion times and mid-plane hydrostatic pressure in turbulent, star forming disk galaxies to internal properties of these galaxies. For this analysis we use 17 galaxies from the DYNAMO sample of nearby ($z\sim0.1$) turbulent disks. We find a strong correlation, such that galaxies with lower molecular gas depletion time (t_{dep}) have higher gas velocity dispersion ($\sigma$). Within the scatter of our data, our observations are consistent with the prediction that depletion time is inversely proportionate to velocity dispersion made in theories of feedback-regulated star formation. We also show a strong, single power-law correlation between mid-plane pressure (P) and star formation rate surface density (Sigma_{SFR}), which extends for 6 orders of magnitude in pressure. Disk galaxies with lower pressure are found to be roughly in agreement with theoretical predictions. However, in galaxies with high pressure we find P/Sigma_{SFR} values that are significantly larger than theoretical predictions. Our observations could be explained with any of the following: (1) the correlation of \Sigma_{SFR}-P is significantly sub-linear; (2) the momentum injected from star formation feedback (so-called p*/m*) is not a single, universal value; or (3) alternate sources of pressure support are important in gas-rich disk galaxies. Finally using published survey results, we find that our results are consistent with the cosmic evolution of t_{dep}(z) and velocity dispersion. Our interpretation of these results is that the cosmic evolution of t_{dep} may be regulated not just by the supply of gas, but also the internal regulation of star formation via feedback., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

The total specific angular momentum j of a galaxy disk is matched with that of its dark matter halo, but the distributions are different, in that there is a lack of both low- and high-j baryons with respect to the CDM predictions. I illustrate how the probability density function PDF(j/j_mean) can inform us of a galaxy's morphology and evolutionary history with a spanning set of examples from present-day galaxies and a galaxy at z~1.5. The shape of PDF(j/j_mean) is correlated with photometric morphology, with disk-dominated galaxies having more symmetric PDF(j/j_mean) and bulge-dominated galaxies having a strongly-skewed PDF(j/j_mean). Galaxies with bigger bulges have more strongly-tailed PDF(j/j_mean), but disks of all sizes have a similar PDF(j/j_mean). We analyze 88 independent high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of disk galaxies in the NIHAO simulations suite to explore the connection between the atomic gas fraction and angular momentum of baryons throughout cosmic time. The study is motivated by the analytic model of \citet{obreschkow16}, which predicts a relation between the atomic gas fraction $f_{\rm atm}$ and the global atomic stability parameter $q \equiv j\sigma / (GM)$, where $M$ and $j$ are the mass and specific angular momentum of the galaxy (stars+cold gas) and $\sigma$ is the velocity dispersion of the atomic gas. We show that the simulated galaxies follow this relation from their formation ($z\simeq4$) to present within $\sim 0.5$ dex. To explain this behavior, we explore the evolution of the local Toomre stability and find that $90\%$--$100\%$ of the atomic gas in all simulated galaxies is stable at any time. In other words, throughout the entire epoch of peak star formation until today, the timescale for accretion is longer than the timescale to reach equilibrium, thus resulting in a quasi-static equilibrium of atomic gas at any time. Hence, the evolution of $f_{\rm atm}$ depends on the complex hierarchical growth history primarily via the evolution of $q$.
