Search

The vertical evolution of galactic discs is governed by the sub-structures within them. We examine the diversity of kinematic sub-structure present in the first 12 galaxies observed from the GECKOS survey, a VLT/MUSE large programme providing a systematic study of 35 edge-on, Milky Way-mass disc galaxies. Employing the nGIST analysis pipeline, we derive the mean line-of-sight stellar velocity ($V_{\star}$), velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\star}$), skew ($h_{3}$), and kurtosis ($h_{4}$) for the sample, and examine 2D maps and 1D line profiles. Visually, the majority of this sample (8/12) are found to possess boxy-peanut bulges and host the corresponding kinematic structure predicted for stellar bars viewed in projection. Four galaxies exhibit strong evidence for the presence of nuclear discs, including central $h_{3}$-$V_{\star}$ anti-correlations, `croissant'-shaped central depressions in $\sigma_{\star}$ maps, strong gradients in $h_{3}$, and positive $h_{4}$ plateaus over the expected nuclear disc extent. The strength of the $h_{3}$ feature corresponds to the size of the nuclear disc, measured from the $h_{3}$ turnover radius. We can explain the features within the kinematic maps of all sample galaxies via disc structure(s) alone. We do not find any need to invoke the existence of dispersion-dominated bulges. Obtaining the specialised data products for this paper and the broader GECKOS survey required significant development of existing integral field spectroscopic (IFS) analysis tools. Therefore, we also present the nGIST pipeline: a modern, sophisticated, and easy-to-use pipeline for the analysis of galaxy IFS data. We present new JWST/NIRSpec IFU observations of the J1000+0234 system at $z=4.54$, the dense core of a galaxy protocluster hosting a massive, dusty star forming galaxy (DSFG) with a low luminosity radio counterpart. The new data reveals two extended, high equivalent width (EW$_0 > 1000$ {\AA}) nebulae at each side of the DSFG disk along its minor axis (namely O3-N and O3-S). On one hand, O3-N's spectrum shows a prominent FWHM $\sim1300$ km s$^{-1}$ broad and blueshifted component, suggesting an outflow origin. On the other hand, O3-S stretches over parsec and has a velocity gradient that spans $800$ km s$^{-1}$ but no evidence of a broad component. Both sources, however, seem to be powered at least partially by an active galactic nucleus (AGN), so we classify them as extended emission-line regions (EELRs). The strongest evidence comes from the detection of the high-ionization [Ne V] $\lambda3427$ line toward O3-N, which paired with the non-detection of hard X-rays implies an obscuring column density above the Compton-thick regime. In O3-S, the [Ne V] line is not detected, but we measure a He II well above the expectation for star formation. We interpret this as O3-S being externally irradiated by the AGN, akin to the famous Hanny's Voorwerp object in the local Universe. In addition, more classical line ratio diagnostics (e.g. [O III]/H$\beta$ vs [N II]/H$\alpha$) put the DSFG itself in the AGN region of the diagrams, and hence the most probable host of the AGN. We present a statistical study of the properties of diffuse HI in ten nearby galaxies, comparing the HI detected by the single-dish telescope FAST (FEASTS program) and the interferometer VLA (THINGS program), respectively. The THINGS' observation missed HI with a median of 23% due to the short-spacing problem of interferometry and limited sensitivity. We extract the diffuse HI by subtracting the dense HI, which is obtained from the THINGS data with a uniform flux-density threshold, from the total HI detected by FAST. Among the sample, the median diffuse-HI fraction is 34%, and more diffuse HI is found in galaxies exhibiting more prominent tidal-interaction signatures. The diffuse HI we detected seems to be distributed in disk-like layers within a typical thickness of $1\,\text{kpc}$, different from the more halo-like diffuse HI detected around NGC 4631 in a previous study. Most of the diffuse HI is cospatial with the dense HI and has a typical column density of $10^{17.7}$-$10^{20.1}\,\text{cm}^{-2}$. The diffuse and dense HI exhibits a similar rotational motion, but the former lags by a median of 25% in at least the inner disks, and its velocity dispersions are typically twice as high. Based on a simplified estimation of circum-galactic medium properties and assuming pressure equilibrium, the volume density of diffuse HI appears to be constant within each individual galaxy, implying its role as a cooling interface. Comparing with existing models, these results are consistent with a possible link between tidal interactions, the formation of diffuse HI, and gas accretion., Comment: 45 pages, 23 figures. The ALMA [CII] Resolved Ism in STar-forming gALaxies (CRISTAL) survey is a Cycle 8 ALMA Large Programme that studies the cold gas component of high-redshift galaxies. Its sub-arcsecond resolution observations are key to disentangling physical mechanisms that shape galaxies during cosmic dawn. In this paper, we explore the morphology and kinematics of the cold gas, star-forming, and stellar components in the star-forming main-sequence galaxy CRISTAL-05/HZ3, at z = 5.54. Our analysis includes 0.3" spatial resolution (~2 kpc) ALMA observations of the [CII] line. While CRISTAL-05 was previously classified as a single source, our observations reveal that the system is a close interacting pair surrounded by an extended component of carbon-enriched gas. This is imprinted in the disturbed elongated [CII] morphology and the separation of the two components in the position-velocity diagram (~100 km/s). The central region is composed of two components, named C05-NW and C05-SE, with the former being the dominant one. A significant fraction of the [CII] arises beyond the close pair up to 10 kpc, while the regions forming new massive stars and the stellar component seem compact (r_[CII] ~ 4 r_UV), as traced by rest-frame UV and optical imaging obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. Our kinematic model, using the DYSMALpy software, yields a minor contribution of dark matter of C05-NW within a radius of ~2x Reff. Finally, we explore the resolved [CII]/FIR ratios as a proxy for shock-heating produced by this merger. We argue that the extended [CII] emission is mainly caused by the merger, which could not be discerned with lower-resolution observations. Massive star-forming galaxies in the high-redshift universe host large reservoirs of cold gas in their circumgalactic medium (CGM). Traditionally, these reservoirs have been linked to diffuse H I Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha)$ emission extending beyond $\approx 10$ kpc scales. In recent years, millimeter/submillimeter observations are starting to identify even colder gas in the CGM through molecular and/or atomic tracers such as the [C II] $158\,\mu$m transition. In this context, we study the well-known J1000+0234 system at $z=4.54$ that hosts a massive dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG), a UV-bright companion, and a Ly$\alpha$ blob. We combine new ALMA [C II] line observations taken by the CRISTAL survey with data from previous programs targeting the J1000+0234 system, and achieve a deep view into a DSFG and its rich environment at a 0.2" resolution. We identify an elongated [C II]-emitting structure with a projected size of 15 kpc stemming from the bright DSFG at the center of the field, with no clear counterpart at any other wavelength. The plume is oriented $\approx 40^{\circ}$ away from the minor axis of the DSFG, and shows significant spatial variation of its spectral parameters. In particular, the [C II] emission shifts from 180 km/s to 400 km/s between the bottom and top of the plume, relative to the DSFG's systemic velocity. At the same time, the line width starts at 400-600 km/s but narrows down to 190 km/s at top end of the plume. We discuss four possible scenarios to interpret the [C II] plume: a conical outflow, a cold accretion stream, ram pressure stripping, and gravitational interactions. We present GECKOS (Generalising Edge-on galaxies and their Chemical bimodalities, Kinematics, and Outflows out to Solar environments), a new ESO VLT/MUSE large program. The main aim of GECKOS is to reveal the variation in key physical processes of disk formation by connecting Galactic Archaeology with integral field spectroscopic observations of nearby galaxies. Edge-on galaxies are ideal for this task: they allow us to disentangle the assembly history imprinted in thick disks and provide the greatest insights into outflows. The GECKOS sample of 35 nearby edge-on disk galaxies is designed to trace the assembly histories and properties of galaxies across a large range of star formation rates, bulge-to-total ratios, and boxy and non-boxy bulges. GECKOS will deliver spatially resolved measurements of stellar abundances, ages, and kinematics, as well as ionised gas metallicities, ionisation parameters, pressure, and inflow and outflow kinematics; all key parameters for building a complete chemodynamical picture of disk galaxies. We present a kinematic analysis of the main-sequence galaxy HZ4 at $z=5.5$. Our study is based on deep, spatially resolved observations of the [CII] 158 $\mu$m transition obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). From the combined analysis of the disk morphology, the two-dimensional velocity structure, and forward-modeling of the one-dimensional velocity and velocity dispersion profiles, we conclude that HZ4 has a regular rotating disk in place. The intrinsic velocity dispersion in HZ4 is high ($\sigma_{0}=65.8^{+2.9}_{-3.3}$ km s$^{-1}$), and the ratio between the rotational velocity and the intrinsic velocity dispersion is $V_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{0}=2.2$. These values are consistent with the expectations from the trends of increasing $\sigma_{0}$ and decreasing $V_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{0}$ as a function of redshift observed in main-sequence galaxies up to $z\approx4$. Galaxy evolution models suggest that the high level of turbulence observed in HZ4 can only be achieved if, in addition to stellar feedback, there is radial transport of gas within the disk. Finally, we find that HZ4 is baryon dominated on galactic scales ($\lesssim2\times R_{\rm e}$), with a dark matter fraction at one effective radius of $f_{\rm DM}(R_{\rm e})=0.41^{+0.25}_{-0.22}$. This value is comparable to the dark matter fractions found in lower redshift galaxies that could be the descendants of HZ4: massive ($M_{\star}\approx10^{11}~M_{\odot}$), star-forming galaxies at $z\sim2$, and passive, early type galaxies at $z\approx0$., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters, 10 pages, 6 figures

We report on the internal distribution of star formation efficiency in IRAS 08339+6517 (hereafter IRAS08), using $\sim$200~pc resolution CO(2-1) observations from NOEMA. The molecular gas depletion time changes by 2 orders-of-magnitude from disk-like values in the outer parts to less than 10$^8$~yr inside the half-light radius. This translates to a star formation efficiency per free-fall time that also changes by 2 orders-of-magnitude, reaching 50-100\%, different than local spiral galaxies and typical assumption of constant, low star formation efficiencies. Our target is a compact, massive disk galaxy that has SFR 10$\times$ above the $z=0$ main-sequence; Toomre $Q\approx0.5-0.7$ and high gas velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{mol}\approx 25$~km~s$^{-1}$). We find that IRAS08 is similar to other rotating, starburst galaxies from the literature in the resolved $\Sigma_{SFR}\propto\Sigma_{mol}^N$ relation. By combining resolved literature studies we find that distance from the main-sequence is a strong indicator of the Kennicutt-Schmidt powerlaw slope, with slopes of $N\approx1.6$ for starbursts from 100-10$^4$~M$_{\odot}$~pc$^{-2}$. Our target is consistent with a scenario in which violent disk instabilities drive rapid inflows of gas. It has low values of Toomre-$Q$, and also at all radii the inflow timescale of the gas is less than the depletion time, which is consistent with the flat metallicity gradients in IRAS08. We consider these results in light of popular star formation theories, in general observations of IRAS08 find the most tension with theories in which star formation efficiency is a constant. We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the [CII] 158 $\mu$m transition and the dust continuum in HZ4, a typical star-forming galaxy when the Universe was only $\sim1$ Gyr old ($z\approx5.5$). Our high $\approx0.3$'' spatial resolution allow us to study the relationships between [CII] line emission, star formation rate (SFR), and far-infrared (FIR) emission on spatial scales of $\sim2$ kpc. In the central $\sim$4 kpc of HZ4, the [CII]/FIR ratio is $\sim3\times10^{-3}$ on global scales as well as on spatially-resolved scales of $\sim$2 kpc, comparable to the ratio observed in local moderate starburst galaxies such as M82 or M83. For the first time in an individual normal galaxy at this redshift, we find evidence for outflowing gas from the central star-forming region in the direction of the minor-axis of the galaxy. The projected velocity of the outflow is $\sim400$ km s$^{-1}$, and the neutral gas mass outflow rate is $\sim3-6$ times higher than the SFR in the central region. Finally, we detect a diffuse component of [CII] emission, or "[CII]-halo", that extends beyond the star-forming disk and has a size of $\sim12$ kpc in diameter. Most likely the outflow, which has a velocity approximately half the escape velocity of the system, is in part responsible for fueling the [CII] extended emission. Together with the kinematic analysis of HZ4 (presented in a forthcoming paper), the analysis supports that HZ4 is a typical star-forming disk at $z\sim5$ with interstellar medium (ISM) conditions similar to present-day galaxies forming stars at a similar level, driving a galactic outflow that may already play a role in its evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 13 pages, 11 figures

We compare the molecular and ionized gas velocity dispersion of 9 nearby turbulent disks, analogues to high-redshift galaxies, from the DYNAMO sample using new ALMA and GMOS/Gemini observations. We combine our sample with 12 galaxies at $z\sim $0.5-2.5 from the literature. We find that the resolved velocity dispersion is systematically lower by a factor $2.45\pm0.38$ for the molecular gas compared to the ionized gas, after correcting for thermal broadening. This offset is constant within the galaxy disks and indicates the co-existence of a thin molecular and thick ionized gas disks. This result has a direct impact on the Toomre $Q$ and pressure derived in galaxies. We obtain pressures $\sim0.22$ dex lower on average when using the molecular gas velocity dispersion, $\sigma_{0,mol}$. We find that $\sigma_{0,mol}$ increases with gas fraction and star formation rate. We also obtain an increase with redshift and show that the EAGLE and FIRE simulations overall overestimate $\sigma_{0,mol}$ at high redshift. Our results suggest that efforts to compare the kinematics of gas using ionized gas as a proxy for the total gas may overestimate the velocity dispersion by a significant amount in galaxies at the peak of cosmic star formation. When using the molecular gas as a tracer, our sample is not consistent with predictions from constant efficiency star formation models, even when including transport as a source of turbulence. We present an overview of the Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral Field Spectroscopy (MAGPI) survey, a Large Program on ESO/VLT. MAGPI is designed to study the physical drivers of galaxy transformation at a lookback time of 3-4 Gyr, during which the dynamical, morphological, and chemical properties of galaxies are predicted to evolve significantly. The survey uses new medium-deep adaptive optics aided MUSE observations of fields selected from the GAMA survey, providing a wealth of publicly available ancillary multi-wavelength data. With these data, MAGPI will map the kinematic and chemical properties of stars and ionised gas for a sample of 60 massive (> 7 x 10^10 M_Sun) central galaxies at 0.25 < z <0.35 in a representative range of environments (isolated, groups and clusters). The spatial resolution delivered by MUSE with Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO, 0.6-0.8 arcsec FWHM) will facilitate a direct comparison with Integral Field Spectroscopy surveys of the nearby Universe, such as SAMI and MaNGA, and at higher redshifts using adaptive optics, e.g. SINS. In addition to the primary (central) galaxy sample, MAGPI will deliver resolved and unresolved spectra for as many as 150 satellite galaxies at 0.25 < z <0.35, as well as hundreds of emission-line sources at z < 6. This paper outlines the science goals, survey design, and observing strategy of MAGPI. We also present a first look at the MAGPI data, and the theoretical framework to which MAGPI data will be compared using the current generation of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations including EAGLE, Magneticum, HORIZON-AGN, and Illustris-TNG. Our results show that cosmological hydrodynamical simulations make discrepant predictions in the spatially resolved properties of galaxies at z ~ 0.3. We present results from the KMOS Lens-Amplified Spectroscopic Survey (KLASS), an ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) large program using gravitational lensing to study the spatially resolved kinematics of 44 star-forming galaxies at 0.61), we find a weak increase or flat trend. We investigate the relation between the rest-frame UV clumpiness of galaxies and their global kinematic properties. We find no clear trend between the clumpiness and the velocity dispersion and $\upsilon_{rot}/\sigma_0$. This could suggest that the kinematic properties of galaxies evolve after the clumps formed in the galaxy disk or that the clumps can form in different physical conditions., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. We present an analysis of the gas dynamics of star-forming galaxies at z~1.5 using data from the KMOS Galaxy Evolution Survey (KGES). We quantify the morphology of the galaxies using $HST$ CANDELS imaging parametrically and non-parametrically. We combine the H$\alpha$ dynamics from KMOS with the high-resolution imaging to derive the relation between stellar mass (M$_{*}$) and stellar specific angular momentum (j$_{*}$). We show that high-redshift star-forming galaxies at z~1.5 follow a power-law trend in specific stellar angular momentum with stellar mass similar to that of local late-type galaxies of the form j$_*$$\propto$M$_*^{0.53 \pm 0.10}$. The highest specific angular momentum galaxies are mostly disc-like, although generally, both peculiar morphologies and disc-like systems are found across the sequence of specific angular momentum at a fixed stellar mass. We explore the scatter within the j$_{*}$-M$_{*}$ plane and its correlation with both the integrated dynamical properties of a galaxy (e.g. velocity dispersion, Toomre Q$_{\rm g}$, H$\alpha$ star formation rate surface density $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) and its parameterised rest-frame UV/optical morphology (e.g. S\'ersic index, bulge to total ratio, Clumpiness, Asymmetry and Concentration). We establish that the position in the j$_{*}$-M$_{*}$ plane is strongly correlated with the star-formation surface density and the Clumpiness of the stellar light distribution. Galaxies with peculiar rest-frame UV/optical morphologies have comparable specific angular momentum to disc-dominated galaxies of the same stellar mass, but are clumpier and have higher star-formation rate surface densities. We propose that the peculiar morphologies in high--redshift systems are driven by higher star formation rate surface densities and higher gas fractions leading to a more clumpy inter-stellar medium., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present adaptive optics assisted integral field spectroscopy of 34 star-forming galaxies at $z$ = 0.8-3.3 selected from the HiZELS narrow-band survey. We measure the kinematics of the ionised interstellar medium on $\sim$1 kpc scales, and show that the galaxies are turbulent, with a median ratio of rotational to dispersion support of $v$/$\sigma$=0.82$\pm$0.13. We combine the dynamics with high-resolution rest-frame optical imaging and extract emission line rotation curves. We show that high-redshift star-forming galaxies follow a similar power-law trend in specific angular momentum with stellar mass as that of local late type galaxies. We exploit the high resolution of our data and examine the radial distribution of angular momentum within each galaxy by constructing total angular momentum profiles. Although the stellar mass of a typical star-forming galaxy is expected to grow by a factor $\sim$8 in the $\sim$5 Gyrs between $z$$\sim$3.3 and $z$$\sim$0.8, we show that the internal distribution of angular momentum becomes less centrally concentrated in this period i.e the angular momentum grows outwards. To interpret our observations, we exploit the EAGLE simulation and trace the angular momentum evolution of star forming galaxies from $z$$\sim$3 to $z$$\sim$0, identifying a similar trend of decreasing angular momentum concentration. This change is attributed to a combination of gas accretion in the outer disk, and feedback that preferentially arises from the central regions of the galaxy. We present Keck/OSIRIS adaptive optics observations with 150-400 pc spatial sampling of 7 turbulent, clumpy disc galaxies from the DYNAMO sample ($0.07

Discriminatory discipline practices in the nation's schools disproportionately impact students of color; students with emotional, behavioral, and cognitive disabilities; and youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ). Large numbers of these students are removed from class, lose opportunities to learn, and are suspended or expelled from school because of exclusionary discipline practices. The impact on students, families, schools, and the community is serious and the cost is high. Students become alienated from school and their teachers, and they are placed at risk of educational, economic, and social problems. Often these youth also have disproportionate rates of contact with the juvenile justice system, particularly when being arrested at school or referred to court from school. This initial contact can lead to deeper involvement in the juvenile and criminal justice systems and reduce the likelihood that these youth will return to school or graduate. This document provides a guide to assist schools and districts in identifying and analyzing the root causes of disparities and then in developing an implementable action plan to address more than symptoms of disparities in a strategic and sustainable manner. This report provides a three-stage method to accomplish this task.

We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations of the CO J=1-0 transition in a sample of four $z\sim2$ main sequence galaxies. These galaxies are in the blue sequence of star-forming galaxies at their redshift, and are part of the IRAM Plateau de Bure HIgh-$z$ Blue Sequence Survey (PHIBSS) which imaged them in CO J=3-2. Two galaxies are imaged here at high signal-to-noise, allowing determinations of their disk sizes, line profiles, molecular surface densities, and excitation. Using these and published measurements, we show that the CO and optical disks have similar sizes in main-sequence galaxies, and in the galaxy where we can compare CO J=1-0 and J=3-2 sizes we find these are also very similar. Assuming a Galactic CO-to-H$_2$ conversion, we measure surface densities of $\Sigma_{mol}\sim1200$ M$_\odot$pc$^{-2}$ in projection and estimate $\Sigma_{mol}\sim500-900$ M$_\odot$pc$^{-2}$ deprojected. Finally, our data yields velocity-integrated Rayleigh-Jeans brightness temperature line ratios $r_{31}$ that are approximately unity. In addition to the similar disk sizes, the very similar line profiles in J=1-0 and J=3-2 indicate that both transitions sample the same kinematics, implying that their emission is coextensive. We conclude that in these two main sequence galaxies there is no evidence for significant excitation gradients or a large molecular reservoir that is diffuse or cold and not involved in active star-formation. We suggest that $r_{31}$ in very actively star-forming galaxies is likely an indicator of how well mixed the star formation activity and the molecular reservoir are., Comment: To appear in ApJ

We present a detailed comparison between the photometric properties of the bulges of two simulated galaxies and those of a uniform sample of observed galaxies. This analysis shows that the simulated galaxies have bulges with realistic surface brightnesses for their sizes and magnitude. These two field disc galaxies have rotational velocities ~ 100 km/s and were integrated to a redshift of zero in a fully cosmological Lambda cold dark matter context as part of high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations. We performed bulge-disc decompositions of the galaxies using artificial observations, in order to conduct a fair comparison to observations. We also dynamically decomposed the galaxies and compared the star formation histories of the bulges to those of the entire galaxies. These star formation histories showed that the bulges were primarily formed before z = 1 and during periods of rapid star formation. Both galaxies have large amounts of early star formation, which is likely related to the relatively high bulge-to-disc ratios also measured for them. Unlike almost all previous cosmological simulations, the realistically concentrated bulges of these galaxies do not lead to unphysically high rotational velocities, causing them to naturally lie along the observed Tully-Fisher relation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Kinetically constrained lattice models of glasses introduced by Kob and Andersen (KA) are analyzed. It is proved that only two behaviors are possible on hypercubic lattices: either ergodicity at all densities or trivial non-ergodicity, depending on the constraint parameter and the dimensionality. But in the ergodic cases, the dynamics is shown to be intrinsically cooperative at high densities giving rise to glassy dynamics as observed in simulations. The cooperativity is characterized by two length scales whose behavior controls finite-size effects: these are essential for interpreting simulations. In contrast to hypercubic lattices, on Bethe lattices KA models undergo a dynamical (jamming) phase transition at a critical density: this is characterized by diverging time and length scales and a discontinuous jump in the long-time limit of the density autocorrelation function. By analyzing generalized Bethe lattices (with loops) that interpolate between hypercubic lattices and standard Bethe lattices, the crossover between the dynamical transition that exists on these lattices and its absence in the hypercubic lattice limit is explored. Contact with earlier results are made via analysis of the related Fredrickson-Andersen models, followed by brief discussions of universality, of other approaches to glass transitions, and of some issues relevant for experiments., Comment: 59 pages

This paper proves various results concerning non-ergodic actions of locally compact groups and particularly Borel cocycles defined over such actions. The general philosophy is to reduce the study of the cocycle to the study of its restriction to each ergodic component of the action, while being careful to show that all objects arising in the analysis depend measurably on the ergodic component. This allows us to prove a version of the superrigidity theorems for cocycles defined over non-ergodic actions.

A closed expression for the momentum evolution of a test particle in weakly-coupled plasma is derived, starting from quantum many particle theory. The particle scatters from charge fluctuations in the plasma rather than in a sequence of independent binary collisions. Contrary to general belief, Bohr's (rather than Bethe's) Coulomb logarithm is the relevant one in most plasma applications. We review recent theoretical progress on the dynamics of brittle crack fronts and its relationship to the roughness of fracture surfaces. We discuss the possibility that the intermediate scale roughness of cracks, which is characterized by a roughness exponent approximately equal to 0.5, could be caused by the generation, during local instabilities by depinning, of diffusively broadened corrugation waves, which have recently been observed to propagate elastically along moving crack fronts. We find that the theory agrees plausibly with the orders of magnitude observed. Various consequences and limitations, as well as alternative explanations, are discussed. We argue that another mechanism, possibly related to damage cavity coalescence, is needed to account for the observed large scale roughness of cracks that is characterized by a roughness exponent approximately equal to 0.8, Comment: 26 pages, 3 .eps figure. We present 42 low-resolution spectra of Supernova (SN) 1993J, our complete collection from the Lick and Keck Observatories, from day 3 after explosion to day 2454, as well as one Keck high-dispersion spectrum from day 383. SN 1993J began as an apparent SN II, albeit an unusual one. After a few weeks, a dramatic transition took place, as prominent helium lines emerged in the spectrum. SN 1993J had metamorphosed from a SN II to a SN IIb. Nebular spectra of SN 1993J closely resemble those of SNe Ib and Ic, but with a persistent H_alpha line. At very late times, the H_alpha emission line dominated the spectrum, but with an unusual, box-like profile. We present a spectroscopic survey of the rich, X-ray selected, galaxy cluster CL 1358+6245 at z=0.328. When our 173 new multi-slit spectra of cluster galaxies are combined with data from the literature, we produce a catalog of 232 cluster members in a region 10'x11' (3.5 Mpc x 3.8 Mpc) surrounding the brightest cluster galaxy. These data are used to study the structure and dynamics of the cluster and to examine the radial and velocity distributions as a function of spectral type. In these lectures, a variety of non-equilibrium transport phenomena are introduced that all involve, in some way, elastic manifolds being driven through random media. A simple class of models is studied focussing on the behavior near to the critical ``depinning'' force above which persistent motion occurs in these systems. A simple mean field theory and a ``toy'' model of ``avalanche'' processes are analyzed and used to motivate the general scaling picture found in recent renormalization group studies. The general ideas and results are then applied to various systems: sliding charge density waves, critical current behavior of vortices in superconductors, dynamics of cracks, and simple models of a geological fault.
