Abstract

COSIMA (COmetary Secondary Ion Mass Analyser) is a time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (TOF-SIMS) on board the Rosetta space mission. COSIMA has been designed to measure the composition of cometary dust grains. It has a mass resolution m/{\Delta}m of 1400 at mass 100 u, thus enabling the discrimination of inorganic mass peaks from organic ones in the mass spectra. We have evaluated the identification capabilities of the reference model of COSIMA for inorganic compounds using a suite of terrestrial minerals that are relevant for cometary science. Ground calibration demonstrated that the performances of the flight model were similar to that of the reference model. The list of minerals used in this study was chosen based on the mineralogy of meteorites, interplanetary dust particles and Stardust samples. It contains anhydrous and hydrous ferromagnesian silicates, refractory silicates and oxides (present in meteoritic Ca-Al-rich inclusions), carbonates, and Fe-Ni sulfides. From the analyses of these minerals, we have calculated relative sensitivity factors for a suite of major and minor elements in order to provide a basis for element quantification for the possible identification of major mineral classes present in the cometary grains., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

This paper studies the behavior of corporate bond spreads during different market regimes between 2004 and 2016. Applying a Markov-switching vector autoregressive (MS-VAR) model, we document that the dynamic impact of spread determinants varies substantially with market conditions. In periods of high volatility, systematic credit risk - rather than interest rate movements - contributes to driving up spreads. Moreover, while market-wide liquidity risk is not priced when volatility is low, it becomes a crucial factor during stress periods. Our results challenge the notion that spreads predominantly capture credit risk and suggest it must be reassessed during periods of financial distress.

Abstract

Abstract Background Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most frequently performed procedures in Switzerland (15'000/year). The most common complication postoperatively is development of chronic pain in up to 30% of all patients irrespective of the operative technique. Methods/Design 264 patients scheduled for an inguinal hernia repair using one of three procedures (Lichtenstein, Barwell and TEP = total extraperitoneal hernioplasty) are being randomly allocated intra-operatively into two groups. Group I patients receive a local injection of 20 ml Carbostesin® 0.25% at the end of the operation according to a standardised procedure. Group II patients get a 20 ml placebo (0.9% Saline) injection. We use pre-filled identically looking syringes for blinded injection, i.e. the patient, the surgeon and the examinator who performs the postoperative clinical follow-ups remain unaware of group allocation. The primary outcome of the study is the occurrence of developing chronic pain (defined as persistent pain at 3 months FU) measured by VAS and Pain Matcher® device (Cefar Medical AB, Lund, Sweden). The study started on July 2006. In addition to a sample size re-evaluation three interim analyses are planned after 120, 180 and 240 patients had finished their 3-months follow-up to allow for early study termination. Discussion Using a group sequential study design the minimum number of patients are enrolled to reach a valid conclusion before the end of the study. To limit subjectivity, both a VAS and the Pain Matcher® device are used for the evaluation of pain. This allows us also to compare these two methods and further assess the use of Pain Matcher® in clinical routine. The occurrence of chronic pain after inguinal hernia repair has been in focus of several clinical studies but the reduction of it has been rarely investigated. We hope to significantly reduce the occurrence of this complication with our investigated intervention. Trial Registration Our trial has been registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. Das Buch beschreibt die Lebensgeschichten einer Gruppe von kommunistischen deutschen Überlebenden des Frauen-Konzentrationslagers Ravensbrück bei Berlin. Diese gründeten unmittelbar nach ihrer Befreiung und dem Ende des Nationalsozialismus ihre Lagergemeinschaft als gemeinsamen sozialen und politischen Verband. Ausgehend von der biografischen Prägung der zentralen Protagonistinnen in der kommunistischen Bewegung der Weimarer Republik wie im Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus zeichnet die Studie die Themenfelder, politischen Absichten, Erfolge und Niederlagen der Lagergemeinschaften in DDR und BRD bis in die 1990er Jahre nach. So werden die Überlebenden als Akteurinnen ihres eigenen Lebens und der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts sichtbar. Die Arbeit ist als Kollektivbiografie in Collage-Form gestaltet: Ihr Kern besteht in der politischen Verbandsgeschichte der Lagergemeinschaften, in denen die porträtierten Überlebenden aktiv waren. In den einzelnen Abschnitten der Arbeit ziehen sich um diesen vielfach gespiegelten Kern besondere Kreise der Geschichte des Nationalsozialismus und seines Nachwirkens sowie der kommunistischen, der deutsch-deutschen und der Geschlechtergeschichte mit ihren jeweiligen Ereignissen und Bedeutungen. Im Zentrum steht stets die politische Lebensgeschichte von kommunistischen Überlebenden im 20. Jahrhundert. Für die Frauen der Lagergemeinschaften, das macht ihr Handeln in fünf Jahrzehnten nach 1945 klar, stand die politische Gegenwart immer auch im Lichte der Vergangenheit – im Lichte Ravensbrücks.

Abstract

International audience; The Cometary Secondary Ion Mass Analyser (COSIMA), a miniaturized time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (ToF-SIMS), is one of the dust particle instruments onboard the orbiter of the Rosetta mission that arrived to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in mid-2014. COSIMA analyses the mineral and organic composition of dust particles that are captured on metal targets exposed to space [1, 2]. The mass spectra acquired by COSIMA show that refractory organic matter is ubiquitous in cometary dust particles [2]. The nature of this carbonaceous material will be discussed. We will highlight the abundance of organic matter in these dust particles as well as the nitrogen to carbon elemental ratio of this refractory organic matter. These results obtained on the dust particles of 67P will be compared to those from other astrophysical objects (carbonaceous chondrites, IDPs, micro-meteorites). 43. Gallbladder Retrieval From Epigastric Versus Umbilical Port in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A PRISMA-Compliant Meta-Analysis.

Abstract

Purpose. To date, no evidence supports the retrieval of the gallbladder through a specific trocar site, and this choice is left to surgeons' preference. The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate the influence of the trocar site used to extract the gallbladder on postoperative outcomes. Methods. According to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a literature search of PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases was performed. Terms used were: ("gallbladder" OR "cholecystectomy") AND "umbilical" AND ("epigastric" OR "subxiphoid"). Randomized trials comparing the gallbladder retrieval from different trocar sites were considered for further analysis. Results. Literature search revealed 145 articles, of which 7 matched inclusion criteria and reported adequate data about postoperative pain, operative time, port-site infections, and hernias. A total of 876 patients were included, and the gallbladder was extracted through epigastric or umbilical trocar site in 441 and in 435 patients, respectively. A statistically significant difference among groups was noted in terms of postoperative pain at 1, 6, 12, and 24 hours in favor of the umbilical trocar site (P < .001). No significant differences were noted in postoperative hernia and infection rate, nor in terms of operative time. Conclusions. This meta-analysis shows a statistically significant reduction in terms of postoperative pain at 1, 6, 12, and 24 hours after surgery when the gallbladder is extracted through the umbilical port. Retrieval time, infections, and hernias rate implicate no contraindication for the choice of a specific trocar site to extract specimens. Despite limitations of this study, the umbilical trocar should be favored as the first choice to retrieve the gallbladder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
