Shortly following the temporary nationwide school dismissal amid COVID-19, the current exploratory case-study evaluated the feasibility of two engagement strategies delivered during group teletherapy: Class Dojo and opportunities to respond (OTR). Three elementary students with emotional and behavioral difficulties participated. An A-B-A design was used to evaluate the effects of Class Dojo on student engagement with therapist-delivered OTRs. Due to one student's poor response to the contingency, an A-B-C design was used to evaluate the additive effect of student-delivered OTRs on his engagement. Results indicated moderate to high rates of student attendance, and consistently high rates of engagement for two students. When students delivered OTRs, the student who initially struggled to engage demonstrated an increase in engagement. Practical issues are discussed and recommendations are considered for future research on increasing student engagement during online settings.

Check-In Check-Out (CICO) is an evidence-based Tier 2 intervention that has most often been used to support students who exhibit externalizing problem behaviors; however, emerging research suggests that CICO may be effective when extended to students who are engaging in internalizing problem behaviors (CICO-IB). The purpose of this study was to replicate previous research using CICO to support students with internalizing behaviors as well as to extend the research using a standardized Daily Progress Report (DPR) for all students. A multiple baseline design across students was used to examine the effects of CICO-IB on social and academic engagement with four elementary students from an urban U.S. elementary school who were exhibiting internalizing behavior problems (e.g., shyness, social withdrawal). Results indicated that CICO-IB was effective in improving active academic and social engagement for all four students included in the study as measured by both teacher rating on a DPR and direct observation. Overall, the majority of teachers, parents, and students found the intervention socially acceptable. Implications for future research and practice with students who are at risk or exhibiting emotional/behavioral disorders along with limitations are discussed.

School consultants often use problem-solving consultation when working with educators and caregivers to support the behavioral and academic outcomes of students. Considering some of the well-known limitations to in-person service delivery, consultants have increasingly relied on telecommunications as a medium through which to deliver problem-solving consultation, namely teleconsultation. Thus, this paper serves as a practical guide for school consultants, who work with educators and caregivers, on how to implement each stage of the problem-solving teleconsultation process. With an emphasis given to supports delivered through technology, we provide general guidance and empirically-supported recommendations for how to develop and maintain a strong working alliance with consultees, engage in effective communication practices, strive for equitable practices when collaborating with ethnically and racially diverse populations, monitor treatment progress and deliver performance feedback, and deliver teleconsultation in accordance with state and federal law.

Consultation was formally introduced in school settings during the 1960s, with the first systematic review of the school consultation literature occurring roughly 40 years ago. The scrutiny that consultants placed on school consultation practice has led educators to identify different consultation models and delivery mediums, and assess the extent to which each remains feasible in the midst of an evolving educational landscape. In light of the ubiquitous presence of technology in schools, school consultants have increasingly used teleconsultation to ensure their continued support to students, families, and educators. Although a growing literature base supports the use of school teleconsultation, the overall status of this service delivery model is still unknown. As such, this systematic review provides a summary of the school teleconsultation literature, which included a total of 13 articles. The outcomes of this review were summarized in terms of services delivered through teleconsultation, consultation models, characteristics of the consultation triad, design quality characteristics, the technologies used, and study outcomes. Overall, summary outcomes provide preliminary evidence for the use of teleconsultation as an effective service delivery model for schools. The results of this review are further discussed in terms of using teleconsultation to support students and educators in schools.

It is critical that schools reduce maladaptive behaviors and increase prosocial behavior through the provision of high-quality evidence-based practices (EBP). School psychologists are uniquely positioned to facilitate the delivery of evidence-based applied behavior analytic EBPs, with regard to the foundational training they typically receive in the areas of assessment, intervention, and consultation. However, the lack of comprehensive behavioral training in school psychology graduate programs exposes an existing training gap. Given a substantial content overlap and the significant contributions ABA offers to school-based practice, school psychology training programs should consider providing a stronger behavior analytic component that will enable program graduates to obtain the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certificate and more effectively address behavioral needs in schools. This paper describes the rationale for integrating a BCBA track into school psychology programs and discusses practical considerations that may arise.

School playgrounds offer ample opportunity to observe the unstructured free-play of school-aged children; however, obtaining valid observations can be difficult to accomplish. Recent technological advances in commercially available aerial drones have the potential to contribute to behavior observation work conducted on playground settings. This study compared video recordings from an aerial drone and a tripod-mounted video camera. Behavior observations coded from the videos showed practical equivalence when analyzed using a Bayesian statistic. Results of the study are discussed and practical ethical issues are considered for future research using aerial drones to observe behavior.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive effects of the Good Behavior Game (GBG); however, limited information exists on the impact of the GBG on students with severe disabilities. This study investigated the impact of the GBG on students with severe disabilities and their off-task behaviors. Three students in three self-contained elementary classrooms and three special education teachers participated in this study. Special Education teachers implemented the GBG during whole group instruction, and researchers used a momentary time sample to measure the percentage of student off-task behavior. A multiple-probe baseline design organized the data to analyze the overall effects of the intervention. All participants showed a decrease in off-task behavior during the GBG. Implementing teachers found the intervention to be socially valid.

Single-case design (SCD) is a research methodology that may be utilized to establish the presence of a functional relation between an independent and dependent variable. Recent research has found the design to frequently be used within school psychology in the evaluation of intervention procedures. However, the overall prevalence of the design within the broader school psychology literature is unknown. As such, the purpose of the current review was to identify trends in the use of SCD within school psychology publications. Furthermore, the review sought to identify institutions and journals that most frequently published SCD. Finally, the review sought to evaluate trends in experimental rigor of published SCD. Twelve journals were examined, with all publications since their inception reviewed and classified by publication type. Results of the review indicated that SCD was the least frequently published article type. However, data indicate an increase in the prevalence and rigor of the design in recent years. Whereas some journals and institutions were found to have steady rates of SCD publications, others were found to have recent increases in the publication of the design. Implications of findings as they pertain to practitioner practice and adoption of evidence-based practice are described.

In schools, special education teachers and paraprofessionals are expected to support the completion of functional behavior assessment procedures in the development of a behavior support plan. Often times, school-personnel are limited in their training and resources, particularly in situations where experimental procedures are necessary. This exploratory study aimed to assess the remote delivery of a comprehensive functional analysis (FA) training package via telehealth to school personnel and examine the nature of implementor error through rate of omission and commission errors within and across FA conditions. Paraprofessionals and a special education teacher were trained over telehealth using telepresence robots to implement functional analyses in the schools. Three functional analyses were then conducted. Information regarding procedural integrity, acceptability, and rates of omission and commission errors during each FA condition are presented, along with implications for research and practice.

Systematic direct observation (SDO) is frequently used in schools to document student response to evidence-based interventions, determine eligibility for special education services, and provide objective data during high-stakes decisions. However, there are several limitations associated with this widely used data collection tool including a shortage of service providers available to implement it and the significant travel time required for itinerant personnel. Using videoconferencing (VC) software to aid in the implementation of SDO is an intuitive application of technology that stands to increase the feasibility and efficiency with which SDO can be utilized in research and practice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and equivalence of the results generated from two modes of SDO, traditional in-vivo SDO and SDO conducted through VC software. The results suggest that VC SDO produces estimates of student on-task behavior that are practically equivalent (i.e., ±3%) to estimates generated through traditional SDO. Furthermore, two frequently used reliability indices indicate that VC SDO results are adequately reliable against traditional in-vivo SDO. Implications for school-based practice are discussed.

Many of the services provided by school psychologists are provided through a consultative framework. Teleconsultation represents one possible effective and acceptable model of service provision to address the need for services in remote and underserved schools. This study examined the feasibility of conducting problem-solving teleconsultation through telepresence robots in a remote and underserved school setting. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline design across three consultant-teacher dyads was used to evaluate three-step prompting for increasing compliance with teacher instruction in special education classrooms. Results showed that there was an increase in student compliance with teacher instructions, moderate levels of treatment integrity, and high ratings of acceptability of the telepresence robot problem-solving consultation process.

Strategies such as reinforcement and stimulus fading have been shown to be effective in the acquisition of skills, particularly for individuals with developmental disabilities. Teleconsultation is a promising service delivery modality to support teachers and staff in the implementation of effective strategies to address the needs of underserved and remote communities. The authors examined the use of teleconsultation, with a teacher and paraprofessional, for the instruction of expressive number discrimination through stimulus fading and reinforcement with a child receiving special education services under the category of Autism. A concurrent multiple baseline design across three number cards was used. Results showed an increase in acquisition and mastery of number identification using stimulus fading to reduce errors while promoting discrimination between stimuli. High levels of treatment integrity and acceptability of the teleconsultation process were also noted.

This statement provides guidance for diabetes care in detention facilities. It focuses on areas where the processes for delivery of care to people with diabetes in detention facilities may differ from those in the community, and key points are made at the end of each section. Areas of emphasis, which inform multiple aspects discussed in this statement, include 1) timely identification or diagnosis of diabetes treatment needs and continuity of care (at reception/intake, during transfers, and upon discharge), 2) nutrition and physical activity, 3) timely access to diabetes management tools (insulin, blood glucose monitoring, tracking data, current diabetes management technologies, etc.), and 4) treatment of the whole person with diabetes (self-management education, mental health support, monitoring and addressing long-term complications, specialty care, etc.). With recent advances in technology, several viable options now exist for school consultants to communicate with teachers via synchronous online videoconferencing (VC) without the need for specialized equipment. Unfortunately, few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of school consultation through VC, so practitioners are provided little guidance when determining if VC is suited to these specific needs. In this article, we identify the VC software packages most commonly used in the growing telehealth literature and discuss how features common to these programs might support effective school teleconsultation. We focus our attention on six specific capabilities: (a) onscreen document sharing; (b) group VC; (c) instant messaging; (d) recording capabilities; (e) integrated cloud storage; and (f) ethical compliance in regard to client confidentiality. Potential applications of these features are discussed, as well as practical and ethical considerations for trainers and school practitioners.

In this article, we provide critical information on previous research and offer recommendations for establishing and implementing teleconsultation services within a school setting. Specifically, we review (a) the history behind teleconsultation, (b) previous applications of technology and teleconsultation within the school setting, (c) recommended equipment for completing teleconsultation, (d) previously identified benefits of using teleconsultation, (e) previously identified concerns regarding the use of teleconsultation, and (f) the best practices for providing teleconsultation services. Important considerations from current research in the area of teleconsultation are highlighted.

School psychologists report a desire to increase consultation with teachers but are limited by competing job demands. Consultation via videoconference (i.e., teleconsultation) offers one possible means of increasing consultant availability to teachers, but little is known about the acceptability of this technology in actual practice. In this exploratory study, we conducted an online survey to assess the conditions under which school consultants would use teleconsultation to assist teachers remotely. Sixty-two school psychology practitioners, trainers, and trainees completed a choice-based conjoint survey designed to assess teleconsultation acceptability in the context of varying commute times, consultee comfort levels, and student problem severities. Findings suggest important differences in teleconsultation acceptability in the context of real-world tradeoffs. Implications of these results are discussed, as well as the potential for using conjoint analysis to better understand technology decisions among school consultants.

Direct behavior ratings (DBRs) have been proposed as an efficient method to assess student behavior in the classroom due to their relative ease of administration compared to alternative methods like systematic direct observation. DBRs are considered low-inference assessments of behavior because they are designed to be completed immediately following a specified observation period of student behavior; however, in practice it is common for teachers and other respondents to delay completion of a DBR until they are reminded to do so. It is unclear what effect, if any, this latency between observation and DBR completion has on rater accuracy. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of completion latency on accuracy in an analogue setting. Two-hundred forty-one undergraduate students (83.8% female) with a mean age of 21 participated across eight groups and were asked to complete an electronic DBR immediately after watching a video of student behavior or after a predetermined delay of 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, or 6 hours. A one-way analysis of variance revealed that there was no statistically significant relationship between completion latency and DBR accuracy, F(7, 233) = 0.959, p = 0.46, ?[superscript 2] = 0.028.

The literature has identified the use of data-based, problem-solving as an essential element in the promotion of positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) within the classroom. The Components of a Successful Classroom (CSC) tool is an instrument which has undergone initial validation to support its use for measuring critical features of Tier 1. This study provides initial support for the validation of this classroom management observation tool as part of a problem-solving consultation framework by examining the extent to which items on the CSC tool sample the constructs of interest in classroom management. Behavioral consultants utilized the tool to evaluate Tier 1 behavior management strategies implemented by teachers in the classroom. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to determine factor structure of the classroom management observation tool. Findings of the EFA supported a unidimensional construct best measured with three factors (i.e., preventive supports, feedback provision and engagement, and expectations and consequences). Currently, this tool may be useful to practitioners by guiding general education consultation after identifying main concerns in teacher's implementation of Tier 1 supports and supporting implementation of PBIS practices in the classroom. School-based psychological services are typically provided through a triadic model of consultation in which a school psychologist works directly with a teacher or school staff member to address the academic, behavioral, or mental health concerns of a student. With advances in current technology, school psychologists have the capacity to use videoconferencing to engage in their consultative responsibilities. Teleconsultation has the potential to improve the provision of consultative services by increasing school psychologists' efficiency and providing individuals, especially those in rural areas, access to greater service. The current study evaluated the effectiveness and acceptability of teleconsultation as a means to deliver behavioral consultation services to three teachers and their students. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline across subjects was used. Results showed that consultants could develop a behavioral intervention with a teacher and effectively implement the intervention to improve student outcomes. Teachers also rated teleconsultation as an acceptable means for service delivery.

The popularity of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) is growing rapidly in schools. Decisions regarding the use of these interventions must be based on empirical evidence. There is robust evidence for the use of MBIs with adults, but research on MBIs with youth is nascent. The purpose of this meta-analytic review was to add to the literature by synthesizing single-case research on MBIs with children and adolescents. Specifically, the effect of MBIs on youths' disruptive behavior was examined in 10 studies published between 2006 and 2014. Results indicated that, on average, MBIs had a medium effect on disruptive behavior during treatment, g = 1.04, 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.30-1.78]; TauU = 0.59, 95% CI [0.40-0.77]. The average effect of MBIs during maintenance phases was larger, g = 1.41, 95% CI [0.55-2.28]; TauU = 0.71, 95% CI [0.59-0.83]. Potential moderators of intervention effects were also explored. Implications for future research and practice regarding MBIs with youth and in schools are discussed.

School-based behavioral consultation with classroom teachers is one of the primary ways school psychologists deliver intervention services to students. The present study aimed to evaluate the acceptability of videoconferencing (VC) with teachers as an alternative medium of consultative communication. Specifically, problem identification interviews (PIIs) were conducted with 60 classroom teachers to simulate a typical consultation interaction. Each teacher completed two PIIs with the researcher consultants, one in a traditional face-to-face (FtF) format and one in a videoconference (VC) format Teachers completed two brief pre-post measures, the Fast Form of the Technology Acceptability Model (FF-TAM) and the Distance Communication Comfort Scale (DCCS) to evaluate the acceptability of VC. Demographic moderators of the acceptability of VC were evaluated using a multiple regression analysis. The results suggest that although teachers rated VC as an acceptable communication medium prior to participating in the VC interview, teacher acceptability ratings increased to "highly acceptable" after participating in the study. Finally, no variables were identified that significantly moderated the relationship between teachers' acceptability rating of VC and their demographic variables. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.
