Abstract

This letter presents the measurement of the energy-dependent neutrino-nucleon cross section in tungsten and the differential flux of muon neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $13.6 \, {\rm TeV}$ and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $(65.6 \pm 1.4) \, \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$. Using the active electronic components of the FASER detector, $338.1 \pm 21.0$ charged current muon neutrino interaction events are identified, with backgrounds from other processes subtracted. We unfold the neutrino events into a fiducial volume corresponding to the sensitive regions of the FASER detector and interpret the results in two ways: We use the expected neutrino flux to measure the cross section, and we use the predicted cross section to measure the neutrino flux. Both results are presented in six bins of neutrino energy, achieving the first differential measurement in the TeV range. The observed distributions align with Standard Model predictions. Using this differential data, we extract the contributions of neutrinos from pion and kaon decays.

Abstract

The first FASER search for a light, long-lived particle decaying into a pair of photons is reported. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6~\text{TeV}$ collected in 2022 and 2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $57.7\text{fb}^{-1}$. A model with axion-like particles (ALPs) dominantly coupled to weak gauge bosons is the primary target. Signal events are characterised by high-energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and no signal in the veto scintillators. One event is observed, compared to a background expectation of $0.44 \pm 0.39$ events, which is entirely dominated by neutrino interactions. World-leading constraints on ALPs are obtained for masses up to $300~\text{MeV}$ and couplings to the Standard Model W gauge boson, $g_{aWW}$, around $10^{-4}$ GeV$^{-1}$, testing a previously unexplored region of parameter space. Other new particle models that lead to the same experimental signature, including ALPs coupled to gluons or photons, U(1)$_B$ gauge bosons, up-philic scalars, and a Type-I two-Higgs doublet model, are also considered for interpretation, and new constraints on previously viable parameter space are presented in this paper., Comment: 37 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

Tau neutrino is the least studied lepton of the Standard Model (SM). The NA65/DsTau experiment targets to investigate $D_s$, the parent particle of the $\nu_\tau$, using the nuclear emulsion-based detector and to decrease the systematic uncertainty of $\nu_\tau$ flux prediction from over 50% to 10% for future beam dump experiments. In the experiment, the emulsion detectors are exposed to the CERN SPS 400 GeV proton beam. To provide optimal conditions for the reconstruction of interactions, the protons are required to be uniformly distributed over the detector's surface with an average density of $10^5~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ and the fluctuation of less than 10%. To address this issue, we developed a new proton irradiation system called the target mover. The new target mover provided irradiation with a proton density of $0.98~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ and the density fluctuation of $2.0\pm 0.3$% in the DsTau 2021 run., Comment: 9 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

In the DsTau experiment at the CERN SPS, an independent and direct way to measure tau neutrino production following high energy proton interactions was proposed. As the main source of tau neutrinos is a decay of Ds mesons, produced in proton-nucleus interactions, the project aims at measuring a differential cross section of this reaction. The experimental method is based on a use of high resolution emulsion detectors for effective registration of events with short lived particle decays. Here we present the motivation of the study, details of the experimental technique, and the first results of the analysis of the data collected during test runs, which prove feasibility of the full scale study of the process in future.

7. Event by Event analysis of Maximum Pseudo-rapidity Gap Fluctuation in High energy Nucleus-nucleus Collisions

Abstract

A study of Event by Event analysis of maximum Pseudo-rapidity Gap Fluctuation in heavy-ion collisions in terms of the scaled variance {\omega} has been carried out for relativistic AA collisions with multiplicity cut (N >10) using nuclear emulsion data at 4.5 AGeV/c. The values of scaled variance are found to be greater than zero indicating the presence of strong fluctuation of maximum rap gap values in the multiparticle production process. The event by event fluctuations are found to decrease with the increase of average multiplicity of the interactions. Experimental analysis has been compared with the results obtained from the analysis of events simulated by generating random numbers (MC-RAND events) and also by Ultra Relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model. 8. Multifractal analysis of charged particle multiplicity distribution in the framework of Renyi entropy

Abstract

A study of multifractality and multifractal specific heat has been carried out for the produced shower particles in nuclear emulsion detector for 16O-AgBr, 28Si-AgBr and 32S-AgBr interactions at 4.5AGeV/c in the framework of Renyi entropy. Experimental results have been compared with the prediction of Ultra Relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model. Our analysis reveals the presence of multifractality in the multiparticle production process in high energy nucleus-nucleus interactions. Degree of multifractality is found to be higher for the experimental data and it increases with the increase of projectile mass. The investigation of quark-hadron phase transition in the multiparticle production in 16O-AgBr, 28Si-AgBr and 32S-AgBr interactions at 4.5 AGeV/c in the framework of Ginzburg-Landau theory from the concept of multifractality has also been presented. Evidence of constant multifractal specific heat has been obtained for both experimental and UrQMD simulated data.

9. Projectile Fragmentation of relativistic nuclei in peripheral Collisions

Abstract

A study of multiplicity distribution of singly charged, doubly charged, multi charged projectile fragments and shower particles have been carried out for the peripheral collisions in 16O-emulsion,22Ne-emulsion and 28Si-emulsion interactions at an incident momentum of (4.1-4.5) AGeV/c. Events having no target fragments have been designated as peripheral collision events. Percentage of peripheral events has been found to increase with the increase of projectile mass. Dispersion of the multiplicity distribution and its dependence on projectile mass for projectile fragments and shower particles has also been investigated. Dependence of average multiplicity of projectile fragments and shower particles on the mass of the projectile beam has been studied. 10. A Comparative Study of kaon to pion ratio in Proton-Proton Collisions at different energies ---Experimental Results vs. Model Simulation

Abstract

A detailed study of energy dependence of positive kaon to pion, negative kaon to pion and total kaon to pion multiplicity ratio have been carried out in pp collisions at 6.3, 17.3, 62.4, 200 and 900 GeV and also at root s =2.76 TeV and 7 TeV in the framework of UrQMD and DPMJET III model. Energy dependence of positive kaon to pion and negative kaon to pion show different behavior in case of UrQMD and DPMJET III model. The presence of the horn like structure in the variation of positive kaon to pion and negative kaon to pion ratio with energy for the experimental data is supported by the DPMJET III model. Experimentally it has been observed that as energy increases, the total kaon to pion multiplicity ratio increases systematically for pp collisions at lower energies and becomes independent of energy in LHC energy regime. Our analysis on total kaon to pion multiplicity ratio with UrQMD data is well supported by the experimental results obtained by different collaborations in different times. 12. An investigation of projectile helium fragments in high-energy nucleus-nucleus interactions

Abstract

A detailed study on the multiplicity distribution of helium (He) fragments emitted in projectile fragmentation of [sup.22]Ne, [sup.28]Si, and [sup.32]S projectiles on interactions with H, CNO, and AgBr targets in a nuclear emulsion track detector has been presented at an incident momentum of (4.1-4.5) AGeV/c. The percentage of events with He fragments increases with increase in projectile mass for all three targets. Studies of multiplicity moments, dispersion of multiplicity distribution, and the investigation of dynamical fluctuations of the projectile He fragments have also been carried out. 15. An investigation of Renyi entropy in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions

Abstract

A study of Renyi entropy of shower particles has been carried out using [sup.16]O, [sup.28]Si, and [sup.32]S projectiles in interaction with AgBr and CNO target present in nuclear emulsion at an incident momentum of 4.5 AGeV/c. The analysis reveals interesting experimental observations for both groups of targets. A comparison of the experimental results with the results obtained from analyzing the event sample generated by the UrQMD code is also presented. Renyi entropy values increase with the increase of projectile mass. This increase is weaker in case of CNO target. The calculated values of second-order Renyi entropy [H.sub.2] are shown to vary linearly with the logarithm of average particle multiplicity ln(n) for both targets. The dependence of Renyi entropy on the logarithm of average particle multiplicity ln(n) indicates the presence of long-range correlation in high-energy nucleus-nucleus interactions. The variation is found to be stronger in the case of experimental events in comparison to the UrQMD simulated events indicating stronger long-range correlation for the experimental data. Resume : Nous presentons une etude de l'entropie de Renyi des gerbes de particules resultant de collisions des projectiles [sup.16]O, [sup.28]Si et [sup.32]S d'impulsion de 4.5 AGeV/c sur des cibles de AgBr et de CNO presentes dans des emulsions nucleaires. L'analyse revele d'interessants resultats pour les deux types de cible. Nous presentons egalement une comparaison entre les resultats experimentaux et une simulation utilisant le logiciel UrQMD. L'entropie de Renyi augmente avec la masse du projectile. Cette augmentation est plus faible dans le cas de la cible de CNO. Nous montrons que les valeurs de l'entropie du second ordre de Renyi, [H.sub.2] varient lineairement avec le logarithme de la valeur moyenne de la multiplicite de particules ln(n) pour les deux cibles. La dependance de l'entropie de Reny sur ln(n) indique la presence d'une correlation a longue portee dans les interactions noyau-noyau a haute energie. La variation est plus forte dans les donnees experimentales que dans la simulation UrQMD, indiquant une correlation de longue portee plus forte dans les resultats experimentaux. 18. Centrality dependence of total disintegration of target nuclei in high energy nucleus-nucleus interactions

Abstract

A study of centrality dependence of target fragmentation and multiparticle production has been carried out in [sup.16]O-AgBr, [sup.22]Ne-AgBr, and [sup.28]Si-AgBr interactions at 4.1-4.5 AGeV/c for the total disintegrated (TD) events. Average multiplicity of black particles increases linearly with decreasing centrality while average multiplicity of grey and shower particles decreases with decreasing centrality for the TD events. The decrease of average multiplicity of grey particles is linear; on the other hand, in the case of shower particles, the increase is nonlinear. With the increase of the mass of the projectile beam, the average multiplicity of black particles decreases and the average multiplicity of grey particles increases for the TD events. This observation has been explained on the basis of the fireball model; however, in the case of shower particles, average multiplicity increases with increase of projectile mass. Nous etudions la dependance en centralite de la fragmentation de la cible et de la production multi-particules dans les collisions [sup.16]O-AgBr, [sup.22]Ne-AgBr et [sup.28]Si-AgBr a 4,1-4,5 AGeV/c pour les evenements de desintegration totale (TD). La multiplicite moyenne des particules noires augmente lineairement avec la diminution en centralite, alors que la multiplicite moyenne des particules grises et de gerbe decroit avec la diminution de centralite dans les cas de TD. Cette decroissance est lineaire pour les particules grises, mais non lineaire pour les gerbes. Lorsque la masse du projectile augmente, la multiplicite moyenne des particules noires decroit, alors que celle des particules grises augmente pour les evenements TD. The opinions and conclusions expressed herein are those of the authors and do not represent any funding agencies., High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. 24. A Comparative Study of Ratio in Proton-Proton Collisions at Different Energies: Experimental Results versus Model Simulation

Abstract

A detailed study of energy dependence of K+/π+, K-/π- and total kaon to pion multiplicity ratio K++K-/π++π-=K/π has been carried out in proton-proton (pp) collisions at s=6.3, 17.3, 62.4, 200, and 900 GeV and also at s=2.76 TeV and 7 TeV in the framework of UrQMD and DPMJET III model. Dependence of K+/π+ and K-/π- on energy shows different behavior for UrQMD and DPMJET III model. The presence of the horn-like structure in the variation of K+/π+ and K-/π- with energy for the experimental data is supported by the DPMJET III model. Experimentally it has been observed that as energy increases, the total kaon to pion multiplicity ratio K++K-/π++π-=K/π increases systematically for pp collisions at lower energies and becomes independent of energy in LHC energy regime. Our analysis on total kaon to pion multiplicity ratio K++K-/π++π-=K/π with UrQMD data is well supported by the experimental results obtained by different collaborations in different times. In case of DPMJET III data, the saturation of K/π ratio at LHC region has not been observed.

Abstract

The requirements for the vertex detector at the proposed Compact Linear Collider imply a very small material budget: less than 0.2% of a radiation length per detection layer including services and mechanical supports. We present here a study using Timepix readout ASICs hybridised to pixel sensors of 50 − 500 μm thickness, including assemblies with 100 μm thick sensors bonded to thinned 100μm thick ASICs. Sensors from three producers (Advacam, Micron Semiconductor Ltd, Canberra) with different edge termination technologies (active edge, slim edge) were bonded to Timepix ASICs. These devices were characterised with the EUDET telescope at the DESY II test beam using 5.6 GeV electrons. Their performance for the detection and tracking of minimum ionising particles was evaluated in terms of charge sharing, detection efficiency, single-point resolution and energy deposition.

Abstract

In the DsTau experiment at the CERN SPS (NA65), an independent and direct way to measure tau neutrino production following high energy proton interactions was proposed. As the main source of tau neutrinos is a decay of Ds mesons, produced in proton-nucleus interactions, the project aims at measuring a differential cross section of this reaction. The experimental method is based on a use of high resolution emulsion detectors for effective registration of events with short lived particle decays. Here we present the motivation of the study, details of the experimental technique, and the first results of the analysis of the data collected during test runs, which prove feasibility of the full scale study of the process in future. 32. Status of vertex and tracking detector R&D at CLIC

Abstract

The physics aims at the future CLIC high-energy linear e+e- collider set very high precision requirements on the performance of the vertex and tracking detectors. Moreover, these detectors have to be well adapted to the experimental conditions, such as the bunch train structure of the beam and the presence of beam-induced backgrounds. The principal challenges are: a point resolution of a few micron, ultra-low mass (~0.2% X0 per layer for the inner vertex region), very low power dissipation (compatible with air-flow cooling in the inner vertex region) and pulsed power operation, complemented with ~10 ns time stamping capabilities. An overview of the R&D program for pixel and tracking detectors at CLIC will be presented, including recent results on an innovative hybridisation concept based on capacitive coupling between active sensors (HV-CMOS) and readout ASICs (CLICpix).

This paper summarizes the physics potential of the CLIC high-energy e+e- linear collider. It provides input to the Snowmass 2013 process for the energy-frontier working groups on The Higgs Boson (HE1), Precision Study of Electroweak Interactions (HE2), Fully Understanding the Top Quark (HE3), as well as The Path Beyond the Standard Model -- New Particles, Forces, and Dimensions (HE4). It is accompanied by a paper describing the CLIC accelerator study, submitted to the Frontier Capabilities group of the Snowmass process.

It has been observed that as energy increases, the K-/K+ ratio increases systematically for both nucleus-nucleus and pp collisions.
