Characterising resistance to fatigue crack growth in adhesive bonds by measuring release of strain energy. J.A. Pascoe*, R.C. Alderliesten, R. Although these methods can produce accurate results under certain conditions, the physical justification of these models is generally lacking. Based on the energy balance it would be expected that the crack growth rate correlates to the strain energy dissipation per cycle. The authors have previously shown that this is indeed the case and can be measured during crack growth experiments. In the present work the measured dissipation of strain energy is used to further characterise fatigue crack growth in adhesively bonded aluminium 2024 DCB specimens, with FM94 epoxy as the adhesive. Conceptually, a model is suggested where the crack growth rate follows from the balance between the energy made available for crack growth and the energy dissipation per unit of crack growth. Both these factors can be influenced by the load cycle applied to the specimen. Dividing the measured strain energy release per cycle by the measured crack growth rate gives an average SERR, G*, for each cycle. This represents the energy dissipation required to create a unit of crack growth given the loading conditions during that cycle. It was found that for a fixed crack growth rate G* depends on Gmax. In other words, the higher Gmax, the greater the amount of energy required to create the same increment of crack growth. The most likely explanation is that a higher Gmax means triggering more dissipative mechanisms that do not cause crack growth (e.g. plastic deformation). For a fixed G* the crack growth rate was found to be strongly correlated to the cyclic work performed on the specimen. Thus the cyclic work is correlated to the amount of energy made available for crack growth. It is notable that the correlation between cyclic work and crack growth rate is not linear. This implies that the fraction of cyclic work that is made available for crack growth is not constant. Further research into the mechanisms that govern the size of this fraction is needed. The results show that measuring the energy dissipation can be used to characterise fatigue crack growth and gain a deeper understanding of the physics of this phenomenon. Furthermore the results show that use of a single parameter (e.g. Gmax or ΔG alone) to model fatigue crack growth is insufficient. Both the peak load and the cyclic applied work (or as a proxy, the load range) need to be taken into account. The implications of this for a future prediction model are discussed.

Campioni di lega Zama 2 (ZP0430: Zn-4Al-3Cu) opportunamente prodotti con processo di pressocolata, sonostati sottoposti a differenti condizioni di invecchiamento naturale (tempi da 21 a 330 giorni) ed artificiale (tempidi 1, 3, 8 e 20 ore e temperatura di 100 °C). Nelle varie condizioni di trattamento i campioni sono stati sottopostiad analisi metallografica, roentgenografica, a misure dimensionali ed a caratterizzazione meccanica per valutarel’influenza delle condizioni di invecchiamento sulle caratteristiche microstrutturali, meccaniche e dimensionali ditale lega. Si sono riscontrate significative diminuzioni di caratteristiche meccaniche e resistenziali nel processodi invecchiamento, una dimensione dei cristalli primari della fase più ricca in Zn (h) fortemente influenzata dalladistanza dalla superficie oltre che dalla massività del singolo componente, mentre le variazioni dimensionalimisurate, in alcuni casi anche del 3% relativo, non evidenziano un andamento continuo. Analisi roentgenografichesono state effettuate per individuare la costituzione della lega e gli stati tensionali conseguenti al processoproduttivo che possono giustificare la non continuità delle variazioni dimensionali.

Le ghise sferoidali legate con silicio e molibdeno sono usate per fabbricare i collettori dei gas di scaricodei motori a combustione interna impiegati su automobili prodotte in grande serie. In questi componenti, lamassima temperatura puntuale, quando il motore lavora a pieno carico, può essere superiore a 750 °C, ed iprincipali meccanismi di danneggiamento in servizio sono l’ossidazione ad alta temperatura e la fatica termomeccanica.In questo lavoro si esamina il comportamento meccanico di una ghisa Si-Mo in funzione dellatemperatura, sia mediante prove di durata a fatica a termine di 10 milioni di cicli, sia anche mediante provedi trazione e di compressione, seguite da osservazioni frattografiche. I risultati delle prove meccaniche sonocorrelati con le microstrutture e con il precedente trattamento termico.

Fractographic assessment of fatigue fractures may be difficult if they occur in metallic components characterized by low ductility complex microstructures. In these cases reconciliation of known fatigue rupture mechanisms with fractographic appearance of fatigue fractured surfaces is challenging. Special techniques coupled with theory development may be necessary. Pearlitic steels or steels with predominant pearlitic microstructures are among the ones that are visited and their fatigue fractures interpreted. Analogously, fatigued Al foundry alloys, with hypoeutectic Al-Si compositions, are also illustrated.

Campioni di lega di cobalto (stellite 6), prodotti per microfusione, sono stati sottoposti a prove di trazione e difatica a differenti temperature. La microstruttura è risultata essere dendritica, costituita da una matrice riccain cobalto e da zone interdendritiche lamellari composte da miscele eutettiche ad alto contenuto di carburi.Non sono state notate variazioni, indotte dal mantenimento alla temperatura di prova, nella forma,dimensioni e distribuzione delle dendriti e dei carburi. L’effetto della temperatura sulle proprietà meccanicheè, nell’intervallo esplorato, abbastanza limitato. Non sono stati osservati cambiamenti nel meccanismo difrattura al variare della temperatura. La frattura, nella prova di trazione e nella parte di schianto della provadi fatica, procede mediante scollamenti interdendritici con fratture a basso assorbimento di energia.Il completamento della frattura avviene nelle dendriti per quasi clivaggio. Nelle prove di fatica, la cricca sipropaga all’interno delle dendriti e la frattura avviene lungo i piani cristallografici, nei quali, a causa dellabassa energia dei difetti di impilamento, possono avvenire scorrimenti planari su aree estese, conferendo allasuperficie di frattura una caratteristica morfologia a gradini.
