A shallow subtidal area in the northern Wadden Sea was monitored over 17 years (from 2003 to 2019) for sediment parameters and macrobenthic fauna. Due to the sheltered position of the study area, sediment composition remained rather stable with only minor annual and seasonal variations in sediment granulometry. An intermittend storm (‘Kyrill’) had no significant effect on sediment composition parameters; the construction of an artificial dune along the southern border of the study area had minor transient but no lasting effects on sediment composition. Faunal species richness and total abundance showed the typical seasonality with minimum abundance in late winter and a peak after recruitment in summer. Variations between years in autumn (post-recruitment) abundances were best explained by the number of days with a seawater temperature

The Sylt Roads pelagic time series covers physical and hydrochemical parameters at five neighboring stations in the Sylt–Rømø bight, Wadden Sea, North Sea. Since the beginning of the time series in 1973, sea surface temperature (SST), salinity, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) have been measured twice a week. The other parameters were introduced later (dissolved silicate (Si) since 1974, pH since 1979, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) since 1996, dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) since 2001, chlorophyll a since 1979, and suspended particulate matter (SPM) since 1975), and in the case of dissolved oxygen, were already discontinued (1979–1983). In the years 1977, 1978, and 1983, no sampling took place. Since the start of the continuous sampling in 1984, the sea surface temperature in the bight has risen by +1.11 ∘C, with the highest increases during the autumn months, while the pH and salinity decreased by 0.23 and 0.33 units, respectively. Summer and autumn salinities are generally significantly elevated compared to spring and winter conditions. Dissolved nutrients (ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, and SRP) have displayed periods of intense eutrophication (1973–1998) and de-eutrophication since 1999. Silicate has shown significantly higher winter levels since 1999. Interestingly, phytoplankton parameters did not mirror these large changes in nutrient concentrations, as a seasonal comparison of the two eutrophication periods showed no significant differences with regard to chlorophyll a. This phenomenon might be triggered by an important switch in nutrient limitation during the time series. With regard to nutrients, the phytoplankton was probably primarily limited by silicate until 1998, while, since 1999, the SRP limitation has become increasingly important. Globally, marine subtidal hard-substrate habitats provide important ecological functions to a variety of sessile and mobile taxa. The southern North Sea is a marine environment with relatively low amounts of hard-substrate areas. Surveys with high taxonomic resolution on the associated hard-substrate epifauna, e.g. by diving observations, are challenging in this region because of strong tidal currents and considerable water depths. Therefore, the characteristics and functions of hard-substrate habitats in the North Sea remain poorly understood. The goal of this study was to extend the knowledge on sessile taxa assemblages in four hard-substrate areas within the German Bight (SE North Sea) using underwater video observations as a straight-forward and visual method to obtain and process detailed data on seafloor characteristics. Still images from drift videos were analyzed to determine the epifaunal assemblages attached to the stones on a presence/absence scale. A subsample of cobbles, boulders and large boulders was further investigated to derive quantitative data on the colonized area for each taxon and stone size. The four areas showed significant differences in sessile taxa richness, with higher numbers of sessile taxa in the deeper far-shore areas than in the shallower nearshore areas, despite a generally high similarity in the sessile animal taxa spectrum. Within the areas, cobbles were mainly dominated by short-lived taxa ( 5 years) like Metridium dianthus, Flustra foliacea and Alcyonium digitatum. Most of the stones were typically covered by epifauna by more than 50%. The differences in the sessile taxa spectrum between the areas were interpreted as a consequence of reduced abiotic stress and higher habitat complexity in the far-shore areas. The dominance of short-lived taxa on cobbles, in comparison to long-lived taxa on boulder-sized stones, possibly reflects the frequency of disturbance and the competitiveness of these taxa.

Comprehensive empirical data to inform benthic species distribution models for marine hard-substrate-dominated environments, are pivotal. However, such data are difficult to obtain. These data are crucial to the definition and demarcation of protected areas and for assessment of the ecological status and function of hard-substrate habitats. In this study, underwater video-observations of hard-substrate habitats within four target areas in the sand-dominated German Bight (SE North Sea) were investigated to obtain comprehensive information on hard-substrate distribution patterns, on the amount and sizes of stones and on the presence of sessile organisms. Based on three size classes (cobbles, boulders, large boulders) three hard-substrate distribution classes were identified: (1) widely scattered stones, (2) accumulations of stones and (3) dense stone fields. The ratios between cobbles, boulders and large boulders differed significantly between the investigated areas. Boulders and large boulders were largely colonized by sessile organisms, whereas cobbles in coastal areas were least frequently colonized. Physical disturbances of epibenthos resulting from abrasion and coverage by mobile sediments are discussed as a possible explanation for the proportional differences in the colonization of stones. Hard substrates in shallower, coastal areas appeared to be strongly influenced by sand abrasion because of higher current velocities and storm-induced waves. In deeper areas, located further offshore, disturbances caused by migrating sandy ripples mobilized by storm-events seemed to be more relevant. Habitat modelling of hard substrates and resultant ecological studies require sound information on the probability of epifaunal colonization for different substrate sizes, hard-substrate distribution patterns combined with hydrodynamic and physicochemical properties of the marine environment to produce valid results. We used a structured approach for the video-based analysis of hard-substrate habitats and present estimates of the colonization probability of differently-sized stones. Our study shows that the analysis of drift videos provides basic data at a suitable resolution to contribute to the monitoring and modelling of marine ecological processes.

Facing the predicted rise in global sea level, sandy shorelines are under increasing pressure. In order to counteract the loss of material at eroding coastlines, beach nourishment is considered to be an environmentally friendly approach worldwide. This has resulted in a rising demand for aggregates, which are frequently extracted from the seafloor near the coast. In order to explore the long- and short-term morphological changes of such mining on the seabed, the largest extraction area in the German Bight (Westerland Dredging Area, established in 1984) was investigated in this study. Several measurement campaigns were conducted between the years 1994 and 2017 using a set of hydroacoustic techniques. The measurements revealed that up to 20-m-deep pits with diameters of more than 1 km were dredged into the seafloor. The depressions caused by this sand mining are still detectable more than 30 years later. Because of slope failures that mainly consist of fine sand, the formerly steep rims at fresh dredging pits smoothed within a few months. However, after approximately 1 year, muddy sediments dominated the deposition. Since the sedimentation rates are slow, a complete backfill of the post-dredging pits is likely to take many decades. A natural regeneration towards the former seafloor conditions is only visible at the shallow rims of the oldest dredging pits.

Beach nourishments are a widely used method to mitigate erosion along sandy shorelines. In contrast to hard coastal protection structures, nourishments are considered as soft engineering, although little is known about the cumulative, long-term environmental effects of both marine sediment extraction and nourishment activities. Recent endeavours to sustain the marine ecosystem and research results on the environmental impact of sediment extraction and nourishment activities are driving the need for a comprehensive up-to-date review of beach nourishment practice, and to evaluate the physical and ecological sustainability of these activities. While existing reviews of nourishment practice have focused on the general design (motivation, techniques and methods, international overview of sites and volumes) as well as legal and financial aspects, this study reviews and compares not only nourishment practice but also the accompanying assessment and monitoring of environmental impacts in a number of developed countries around the world. For the study, we reviewed 205 openly-accessible coastal management strategies, legal texts, guidelines, EIA documents, websites, project reports, press releases and research publications about beach nourishments in several developed countries around the world (Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, UK, USA and Australia). Where information was not openly available, the responsible authorities were contacted directly. The study elaborates on the differences in coastal management strategies and legislation as well as the large dissimilarities in the EIA procedure (where applicable) for both marine sediment extraction and nourishment activities. The spatial disturbance of the marine environment that is considered a significant impact, a factor which determines the need for an Environmental Impact Assessment, varies substantially between the countries covered in this study. Combined with the large uncertainties of the long-term ecological and geomorphological impacts, these results underline the need to reconsider the sustainability of nourishments as “soft” coastal protection measures.

Ongoing erosion at coasts, beaches and dunes accompanied by a climate change-induced sea-level rise requires extensive protection measures. At the Island of Sylt (SE North Sea) beach nourishments were conducted for almost 50 years to protect the exposed western coast against erosion. Since 1984, the materials for the sand replenishments were dredged from an offshore excavation site approx. 7 km west off Sylt in the German Bight. In this study, we investigate the long-term effects of sand extraction on the local geomorphology, the associated benthic habitats and fauna. Hydroacoustic surveys and grab sampling revealed that after more than 35 years changes in bathymetry (with dredging pits of down to ~15 m below sea floor) and also changes in habitat characteristics are still present. Additionally, the sediment and benthic faunal compositions have changed. A comparison between dredged areas and undisturbed seafloor revealed significant differences in mud content (increasing), the number of individuals and species of macrozoobenthic organisms (decreasing). This indicates that the benthic communities in the dredging areas are in a persistent successional stage. Mud-loving species (e. g. Notomastus latericeus and Kurtiella bidentate) profit from the changed habitats, however sand-preferring organisms (e.g. Pisione remota and Aonides paucibranchiata) largely disappeared. Because of the slow backfill rates, we conclude that a complete backfill of the deep dredging pits is likely to take centuries. The same is expected to apply for the regeneration of the benthic communities. However, since rather coarse-to-medium sand was removed from this area and re-accumulation of this Pleistocene material is not possible because of weak transport rates, a re-establishment of benthic communities that prefer coarser sand seems to be unlikely. Since benthic communities are strongly linked to the habitat characteristics, habitat mapping using hydroacoustic techniques is an efficient and cost-effective measure to monitor the state of regeneration in this study site.

The study is dedicated to the tidal dynamics in the Sylt-Rømø Bight with a focus on the non-linear processes. The FESOM-C model was used as the numerical tool, which works with triangular, rectangular or mixed grids and is equipped with a wetting/drying option. As the model’s success at resolving currents largely depends on the quality of the bathymetric data, we have created a new bathymetric map for an area based on recent studies of Lister Deep, Lister Ley, and the Højer and Rømø Deep areas. This new bathymetric product made it feasible to work with high resolution grids (up to 2 m in the wetting/drying zone). As a result, we were able to study the tidal energy transformation and the role of higher harmonics in the domain in detail. The tidal ellipses, maximum tidally-induced velocities, energy fluxes and residual circulation maps were constructed and analysed for the entire bight. Additionally, tidal asymmetry maps were introduced and constructed. The full analysis was performed on two grids with different structures and showed a convergence of the results as well as fulfillment of the energy balance. The tidal residual circulation and asymmetric tidal cycles largely define the circulation pattern, transport and accumulation of sediment and the distribution of bedforms in the bight, therefore the results are necessary and useful benchmarks for further studies in the area, including baroclinic and sediment dynamics investigations.

The North Sea is a shallow marine environment. The sediment distribution of the seabed is dominated by sand-sized material. Hard-substrate areas are a relatively rare, but important habitat for sessile and mobile species. This habitat type forms island-like geomorphic features owing to the presence of glacial deposits in the shallow subsurface. While their ecological importance is widely acknowledged, hard-substrate areas are characterized by a large degree of spatial heterogeneity and an unaccounted high local diversity in physical surface properties, sediment composition and temporal change.The aim of this study is the detailed investigation into the spatial characteristics and temporal variability of an exemplary hard-substrate complex located 10 km offshore the island of Sylt (N-Germany). The area has a size of c. 3 km2and was investigated between 2008 and 2019 using a range of hydroacoustic and optical sensors (multibeam echosounder, sidescan sonar, sub-bottom profiler, acoustic ground discrimination system, underwater videos) and machine learning algorithms (haar-like features) to track the changes in the number and local distribution of exposed stones.The maximum water depth in the area is 16 m and a linear arrangement of hard substrates emerges up to 4 m from the seabed. A layer of fine sand with a thickness of 0.5 m overlays the more planarly deposited coarse sediments in the proximity of the stony outcrop. This layer of fine sand is relatively mobile and leads to a frequent temporal change of the distribution of sediment on the seabed, whilst the stony outcrop is only marginally affected by the spatial dislocation of sediments. The spatial extent of hard substrates is variable due to the presence of a mobile sand cover on the seabed.This study emphasizes the need for quick and automated object classification routines to be integrated in monitoring approaches in the highly dynamic coastal zone. It has shown that the geomorphological diversity and interannual variability of hard-substrate areas can be captured using the presented approach. Sea-level rise demands for protection measures of endangered coastlines crucial for the local population. At the island of Sylt in the SE North Sea, shoreline erosion is compensated by replenishment with sand dredged from an offshore extraction site. We studied the long-term effects of sand extraction on bathymetry, geomorphology, habitats and benthic fauna. Sand extraction created dredging holes about 1 km in diameter and up to 20 m below the ambient seafloor level. Directly after dredging the superficial sediment layer, inside the pits was dominated by coarse sand and stones. Hydroacoustic surveys revealed only minor changes of bathymetry > 35 years after sand extraction. Obviously, backfill of the dredging pits was very slow, at a rate of a few millimeters per year, presumably resulting from low ambient sediment availability and relatively calm hydrodynamic conditions despite high wave energy during storms. Thus, a complete backfill of the deep extraction sites is likely to take centuries in this area. Hydroacoustic surveys and ground truthing showed that the backfilled material is mainly very fine sand and mud, turning the previously coarse sand surface into a muddy habitat. Accordingly, grab samples revealed significant differences in macrozoobenthos community composition, abundance and species density between recently dredged areas (< 10 years ago), recovery sites (dredging activity > 10 years ago) and undisturbed sites (control sites). Overall, dredging turned the original association of sand-dwelling species into a muddy sediment association. Since re-establishment of disturbed benthic communities depends on previous re-establishment of habitat characteristics, the low sedimentation rates indicate that a return to a pre-dredging habitat type with its former benthic community and habitat characteristics is unlikely. Since coarse sand is virtually immobile in this area, a regeneration towards pre-dredging conditions is also unlikely without human interference (e.g., mitigation measures like depositing coarse material on the seafloor to restore the sessile epifauna).

To determine the spatial resolution of sediment properties and benthic macrofauna communities in acoustic backscatter, the suitability of four acoustic seafloor classification devices (single-beam echosounder with RoxAnn and QTC 5.5 seafloor classification system, sidescan sonar with QTC Swathview seafloor classification, and multi-beam echosounder with QTC Swathview seafloor classification) was compared in a study area of approx. 6 km2 northwest of the island of Helgoland in the German Bight, southern North Sea. This was based on a simple similarity index between simultaneous sidescan sonar, single-beam echosounder and multi-beam echosounder profiling spanning the period 2011–2014. The results show a high similarity between seafloor classifications based on sidescan sonar and RoxAnn single-beam systems, in turn associated with a lower similarity for the multi-beam echosounder system. Analyses of surface sediment samples at 39 locations along four transects (0.1 m2 Van Veen grab) revealed the presence of sandy mud (southern and western parts), coarse sand, gravel and cobbles. Rock outcrops were identified in the north-eastern and eastern parts. A typical Nucula nitidosa–Abra alba community was found in sandy muds to muddy sands in the northern part, whereas the southern part is characterised by widespread occurrence of the ophiuroid brittle star Amphiura filiformis. A transitional N. nitidosa–A. filiformis community was detected in the central part. Moreover, the southern part is characterised by a high abundance of A. filiformis and its commensal bivalve Kurtiella bidentata. The high number of A. filiformis feeding arms (up to ca. 6,800 per m2) can largely explain the gentle change of backscatter intensity along the tracks, because sediment composition and/or seafloor structures showed no significant variability.

Marine habitats of shelf seas are in constant dynam- ic change and therefore need regular assessment particularly in areas of special interest. In this study, the single-beam acoustic ground discrimination system RoxAnn served to as- sess seafloor hardness and roughness, and combine these pa- rameters into one variable expressed as RGB (red green blue) color code followed by k-means fuzzy cluster analysis (FCA). The data were collected at a monitoring site west of the island of Helgoland (German Bight, SE North Sea) in the course of four surveys between September 2011 and November 2014. The study area has complex characteristics varying from out- cropping bedrock to sandy and muddy sectors with mostly gradual transitions. RoxAnn data enabled to discriminate all seafloor types that were suggested by ground-truth informa- tion (seafloor samples, video). The area appears to be quite stable overall; sediment import (including fluid mud) was de- tected only from the NW. Although hard substrates (boulders, bedrock) are clearly identified, the signal can be modified by inclination and biocover. Manually, six RoxAnn zones were identified; for the FCA, only three classes are suggested. The latter classification based on ‘hard’ boundaries would sufficefor stakeholder issues, but the former classification based on ‘soft’ boundaries is preferred to meet state-of-the-art scientific objectives.

Sorted bedforms are ubiquitous on the inner continental shelves worldwide. They are described as spatially-grain-size-sorted features consisting of small rippled medium-to-coarse sand and can remain stable for decades. Hydroacoustic devices can provide rapid and reliable information on the acoustic characteristics of the seafloor. Data of a typical, exclusively sandy and shallow investigation area located in the German Wadden Sea are here presented. The study area includes shallow sublittoral areas and deep channels. The acoustic ground discrimination system RoxAnn was used to measures backscatter intensities, which indicate roughness and hardness parameters of seafloor. Kelp forests represent a major habitat type in coastal waters worldwide and their structure and distribution is predicted to change due to global warming. Despite their ecological and economical importance, there is still a lack of reliable spatial information on their abundance and distribution. In recent years, various hydroacoustic mapping techniques for sublittoral environments evolved. However, in turbid coastal waters, such as off the island of Helgoland (Germany, North Sea), the kelp vegetation is present in shallow water depths normally excluded from hydroacoustic surveys. In this study, single beam survey data consisting of the two seafloor parameters roughness and hardness were obtained with RoxAnn from water depth between 2 and 18 m. Our primary aim was to reliably detect the kelp forest habitat with different densities and distinguish it from other vegetated zones. Five habitat classes were identified using underwater-video and were applied for classification of acoustic signatures. Subsequently, spatial prediction maps were produced via two classification approaches: Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and manual classification routine (MC). LDA was able to distinguish dense kelp forest from other habitats (i.e. mixed seaweed vegetation, sand, and barren bedrock), but no variances in kelp density. In contrast, MC also provided information on medium dense kelp distribution which is characterized by intermediate roughness and hardness values evoked by reduced kelp abundances. The prediction maps reach accordance levels of 62% (LDA) and 68% (MC). The presence of vegetation (kelp and mixed seaweed vegetation) was determined with higher prediction abilities of 75% (LDA) and 76% (MC). Since the different habitat classes reveal acoustic signatures that strongly overlap, the manual classification method was more appropriate for separating different kelp forest densities and low-lying vegetation. It became evident that the occurrence of kelp in this area is not simply linked to water depth. Moreover, this study shows that the two seafloor parameters collected with RoxAnn are suitable indicators for the discrimination of different densely vegetated seafloor habitats in shallow environments.

The growing pressure on the coastal ecosystem, e.g. through fisheries, tourism or maritime traffic demands the careful balancing of activities and developments in the coastal zone. Strategies and planning tools like Integrated Coastal Zone Management (UNEP/MAP/PAP, 2008) or the ecosystem approach (which is planned to be implemented in the EU through the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, European Commission, 2008) aim at a holistic, environmentally friendly and sustainable development of the world’s coastlines. Especially in view of rising sea levels, coastal protection becomes crucial for many densely populated coastlines. For the past few decades beach nourishments have been carried out in many coastal regions as “environmentally friendly” alternative to hard coastal protection structures, such as groins, revetments or breakwaters (Hamm et al, 2002). However, the extraction, transport and deposition of sediment can have (long-term) impacts on the environment, which are often not completely understood. Subsequently, these impacts cannot be fully taken into account in national and local nourishment practice, leading to an insufficient implementation of the ecosystem approach.
