This study investigates the perspectives of African-Canadian educators on critical factors for success in their educational careers. Interviews were conducted and life histories were constructed to analyze the complex and multifaceted nature of the experiences of ten African-Canadian educators. These data indicate that family and community support, rigorous academic qualifications, role modeling, and the establishment of strong interpersonal relationships have been significant influences on the participants' success. The author suggests that an improved understanding about African-Canadian educators' lived experiences hold implications for all educators in their teaching approaches and for student learning. The focus of this research is cultural sustainability of African Canadian heritage. Research literature informs us that engaging youth in educational programmes at the local level is fundamental to sustainability discussions. Furthermore, students must be actively engaged in their African Canadian past, present and future education. However, there has been a lack of curricula and resources of African Canadian heritage in programmes, resulting in African Canadian students being unaware of the history, culture and positive contributions of their leaders to society. Educators of African heritage in Nova Scotia have developed African Canadian Studies 11. The interview data from African Canadian educators and students reveal the process for the development and implementation of this curriculum, the challenges that African Canadian educators face and the ways in which students become actively engaged in learning. The author suggests that this research has implications for cultural sustainability at the local and community level.

In today's educational systems, students of all levels of education experience math anxiety. Furthermore, math anxiety is frequently linked to poor achievement in mathematics. The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of math anxiety and to explore strategies which pre-service teachers have identified to overcome math anxiety. The methodology included conducting surveys with 70 pre-service teachers in Canada and completing a critical analysis of the data to provide an overview of the causes of math anxiety. These data indicate that pre-service teachers have encountered math anxiety in many situations. These causes include: lack of self-confidence, fear of failure; teaching styles; ineffective learning practices, and non-engagement of students. Furthermore, these data indicate that facing math anxiety have empowered the participants to devise strategies which have enabled them to overcome math anxiety. The author suggests that an improved understanding of math anxiety hold implications for all students and educators of mathematics.
