The sequence of multiallelic dinucleotide repeat polymorphism designated as RM209 was obtained from an M13mp18 template through the use of conventional dideoxy methods. The polymorphism can be detected by performing polymerase chain reaction and analyzed by electrophoresis in thin six percent denaturing polyacrylamide gels and autoradiography. Syntenic group U25 is the polymorphism's chromosomal location. The RM209 locus was not polymorphic in sheep and goat, although it was successfully amplified.

To test the validity of published guidelines on the height of seating for the elderly, ambulant residents in three Social Services' Homes were asked to rise from their usual chairs and from a chair conforming to the guidelines. When both seat and arm height were at recommended levels, 77% of those who were usually chair-fast could rise unaided. More agile residents also benefited, as they could rise with less difficulty. Though mobility decreased with age, those who failed to benefit were distinguished by advanced brain failure rather than age. Some aspects of cost are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Laser-plasma accelerators are compact linear accelerators based on the interaction of high-power lasers with plasma to form accelerating structures up to 1000 times smaller than standard radiofrequency cavities, and they come with an embedded X-ray source, namely betatron source, with unique properties: small source size and femtosecond pulse duration. A still unexplored possibility to exploit the betatron source comes from combining it with imaging methods able to encode multiple information like transmission and phase into a single-shot acquisition approach. In this work, we combine edge illumination-beam tracking (EI-BT) with a betatron X-ray source and present the demonstration of multimodal imaging (transmission, refraction, and scattering) with a compact light source down to the femtosecond timescale. In September 2010, the first International Scientific Tendinopathy Symposium (ISTS) was held in Umeå, Sweden, to establish a forum for original scientific and clinical insights in this growing field of clinical research and practice. The second ISTS was organised by the same group and held in Vancouver, Canada, in September 2012. This symposium was preceded by a round-table meeting in which the participants engaged in focused discussions, resulting in the following overview of tendinopathy clinical and research issues. This paper is a narrative review and summary developed during and after the second ISTS. The document is designed to highlight some key issues raised at ISTS 2012, and to integrate them into a shared conceptual framework. It should be considered an update and a signposting document rather than a comprehensive review. The document is developed for use by physiotherapists, physicians, athletic trainers, massage therapists and other health professionals as well as team coaches and strength/conditioning managers involved in care of sportspeople or workers with tendinopathy.

Purpose: This study investigated the effect of caffeine consumed with and without carbohydrate (CHO) on immunoendocrine responses after exercise., Methods: On four occasions, 12 recreational male cyclists cycled for 2 h at 65% V O2max. Sixty minutes before exercise, participants ingested 6 mg.kg(-1) body mass of caffeine (CAF) or placebo (PLA), then during exercise they consumed a 6% CHO or placebo (PLA) drink, providing CAF/CHO, PLA/CHO, CAF/PLA, and PLA/PLA conditions., Results: f-MLP-stimulated neutrophil oxidative burst responses were significantly higher after exercise on CAF/CHO and PLA/CHO (both P<0.05) than PLA/PLA when expressed as a percentage of baseline value. The response on CAF/PLA tended to be higher than PLA/PLA at this point (P=0.056). No significant differences between CAF/CHO, PLA/CHO, and CAF/PLA were observed after exercise; however, only PLA/CHO showed no significant postexercise decline. Coingestion of CAF/CHO significantly attenuated epinephrine (P<0.05) and IL-6 (P<0.05) responses that occurred after ingestion of CAF alone (CAF/PLA) and significantly attenuated the transient alterations in circulating leukocyte (P<0.05) and neutrophil (P<0.01) counts. Plasma cortisol concentration was significantly lower on PLA/CHO than CAF/PLA and PLA/PLA after exercise (P<0.05). Perceived exertion during exercise was significantly lower on CAF/CHO than the other three trials (P<0.05)., Conclusion: Taken together, this suggests that coingestion of caffeine and CHO has greater influence on immunoendocrine responses than neutrophil functional responses to prolonged exercise.

A prospective cohort study of a twice weekly exercise programme for six months was undertaken to determine the benefits of an exercise class for 28 elderly women following hip surgery. The effects of the exercise programme were monitored using cycle ergometry. Walking speed was measured on entry and at 3, 6 and 12 months. Twenty-six subjects completed the programme with an overall attendance rate of 88%. Measures of fitness, calculated from cycle ergometry, did not improve significantly apart from test duration. In contrast there was a significant improvement in mean walking speed, with a 50% increase between 0 and 3 months and a further 21% increase between 3 and 6 months. This improvement was maintained at 12 months.
