Search

Significant improvements in our understanding of nuclear $\gamma$-ray line production and instrument performance allow us to better characterize the continuum emission from electrons at energies $\gtrsim$ 300 keV during solar flares. We represent this emission by the sum of a power-law extension of hard X-rays (PL) and a power law times an exponential function (PLexp). We fit the $\gamma$-ray spectra in 25 large flares observed by SMM, RHESSI, and Fermi with this summed continuum along with calculated spectra of all known nuclear components. The PL, PLexp, and nuclear components are separated spectroscopically. A distinct origin of the PLexp is suggested by significant differences between its time histories and those of the PL and nuclear components. RHESSI imaging/spectroscopy of the 2005 January 20 flare, reveals that the PL and nuclear components come from the footpoints while the PLexp component comes from the corona. While the index and flux of the anisotropic PL component are strongly dependent on the flares' heliocentric angle, the PLexp parameters show no such dependency and are consistent with a component that is isotropic. The PLexp spectrum is flat at low energies and rolls over at a few MeV. Such a shape can be produced by inverse Compton scattering of soft X-rays by 10--20 MeV electrons and by thin-target bremsstrahlung from electrons with a spectrum that peaks between 3 -- 5 MeV, or by a combination of the two processes. SIRI-2 is a collection of Strontium Iodide gamma-ray detectors sensitive at approximately 400 keV to 10 MeV, launched on the Department of Defense's STPSat-6 to geosynchronous orbit. SIRI-2 detected the gamma-ray burst (GRB) 221009A and, unlike most GRB detectors, was not saturated and did not require any pulse pile-up corrections. The energetics of this burst as measured by SIRI-2 are consistent with those found by other instruments, and the Band function fits to the spectra are consistent with that from the unsaturated Insight and GECAM instruments, and similar to corrected spectra from the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, but softer than those found by Konus-Wind when that instrument was saturated. The total fluence measured with SIRI-2 was measured to be 0.140 +/- 0.002 erg cm-2, lower than other instruments, likely due to the increasing background of SIRI-2 forcing the calculation to use a smaller time interval. An extrapolation of the distributions of fluences from GRBs to the fluence of 221009A measured with SIRI-2 indicates bursts brighter than this one should occur about once every 4,000 years., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) brighter than the GRB 221009A, the brightest yet observed, have previously been estimated to occur at a rate of 1 per 10,000 years, based on the extrapolation of the distribution of fluences of the Long GRB population. We show that bursts this bright could instead have a rate as high as approximately one per 200 years if they are from a separate population of narrow-jet GRBs. This population must have a maximum redshift of about $z\approx 0.38$ in order to avoid over-producing the observed rate of fainter GRBs. We show that it will take $> 100$ years to confirm this new population based on observing another GRB from it with a $\gamma$-ray detector; observing an orphan optical afterglow from this population with Vera Rubin Observatory or an orphan radio afterglow with the Square Kilometer Array will also take similarly long times to observe, and it is unclear if they could be distinguished from the standard GRB population. We show that the nearby narrow-jet population has more favorable energetics for producing ultra-high energy cosmic rays than standard GRBs. The rate of bursts in the Milky Way bright enough to cause mass extinctions of life on Earth from the narrow jet population is estimated to be approximately 1 per 500 Myr. The recent detection of gamma-ray burst GRB~221009A has attracted attention due to its record brightness and first-ever detection of $\gtrsim 10$ TeV $\gamma$ rays from a GRB. Despite being the second-nearest GRB ever detected, at a redshift of $z=0.151$, the distance is large enough for severe attenuation of $\gamma$-ray flux at these energies due to $\gamma\gamma\to e^\pm$ pair production with the extragalactic background light (EBL). Here, we investigate whether the presence of cosmic voids along the line of sight can significantly impact the detectability of very-high energy (VHE, $>$ 100 GeV) gamma rays from distant sources. Notably, we find that the gamma-gamma opacity for VHE gamma rays can be reduced by approximately 10\% and up to 30\% at around 13 TeV, the highest-energy photon detected from GRB~221009A, for intervening cosmic voids along the line-of-sight with a combined radius of 110 Mpc, typically found from voids catalogs, and 250 Mpc, respectively. This reduction is substantially higher for TeV photons compared to GeV photons, attributable to the broader target photon spectrum that TeV photons interact with. This finding implies that VHE photons are more susceptible to variations in the EBL spectrum, especially in regions dominated by cosmic voids. I present a model for light travel time effects for emission from a plasma blob in a blazar jet. This calculation could be incorporated into more complex models with particle acceleration and radiation mechanisms, but as presented here it is a agnostic as to these mechanisms. This model includes light travel time effects for an expanding or contracting blob. As an example, this model is applied to a flare observed by VERITAS and MAGIC from Mrk 421 in 2013; and to a flare observed by the Fermi Large Area Telescope from 3C 454.3 in 2010., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We compute in detail the absorption optical depth for astrophysical $\gamma$-ray photons interacting with solar photons to produce electron positron pairs. This effect is greatest for $\gamma$-ray sources at small angular distances from the Sun, reaching optical depths as high as $\tau_{\gamma\gamma}\sim 10^{-2}$. We also calculate this effect including modifications to the absorption cross section threshold from subluminal Lorentz invariance violation (LIV). We show for the first time that subluminal LIV can lead to increases or decreases in $\tau_{\gamma\gamma}$ compared to the non-LIV case. We show that, at least in principle, LIV can be probed with this effect with observations of $\gamma$-ray sources near the Sun at $\gtrsim20$ TeV by HAWC or LHAASO, although a measurement will be extremely difficult due to the small size of the effect., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. The preliminary detections of the gamma-ray burst 221009A up to 18 TeV by LHAASO and up to 251 TeV by Carpet 2 have been reported through Astronomer's Telegrams and Gamma-ray Coordination Network circulars. Since this burst is at redshift $z=0.1505$, these photons may at first seem to have a low probability to avoid pair production off of background radiation fields and survive to reach detectors on Earth. By extrapolating the reported $0.1-1.0$\ GeV LAT spectrum from this burst to higher energies and using this to limit the intrinsic spectrum of the burst, we show that the survival of the 18 TeV photon detected by LHAASO is not unlikely with many recent extragalactic background light models, although the detection of a 251 TeV event is still very unlikely. This can be resolved if Lorentz invariance is violated at an energy scale $E_{\rm QG}< 49 E_{\rm Planck}$\ in the linear ($n=1$) case, and $E_{\rm QG}< 10^{-6}E_{\rm Planck}$\ in the quadratic ($n=2$) case (95\% confidence limits), where $E_{\rm Planck}$ is the Planck energy. We present an updated model for the extragalactic background light (EBL) from stars and dust, over wavelengths approximately 0.1 to 1000 $\mu$m. This model uses accurate theoretical stellar spectra, and tracks the evolution of star formation, stellar mass density, metallicity, and interstellar dust extinction and emission in the universe with redshift. Dust emission components are treated self-consistently, with stellar light absorbed by dust reradiated in the infrared as three blackbody components. We fit our model, with free parameters associated with star formation rate and dust extinction and emission, to a wide variety of data: luminosity density, stellar mass density, and dust extinction data from galaxy surveys; and $\gamma$-ray absorption optical depth data from $\gamma$-ray telescopes. Our results strongly constraint the star formation rate density and dust photon escape fraction of the universe out to redshift $z=10$, about 90% of the history of the universe. We find our model result is, in some cases, below lower limits on the $z=0$ EBL intensity, and below some low-$z$ $\gamma$-ray absorption measurements., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. In this study, we systematically studied the X-ray to GeV gamma-ray spectra of 61 {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT) detected radio galaxies. We found an anticorrelation between peak frequency and peak luminosity in the high-energy spectral component of radio galaxies, similar to blazars. With this sample, we also constructed a gamma-ray luminosity function (GLF) of gamma-ray-loud radio galaxies. We found that blazar-like GLF shapes can reproduce their redshift and luminosity distribution, but the log$N$-log$S$ relation prefers models with more low-$z$ radio galaxies. This indicates many low-$z$ gamma-ray-loud radio galaxies. By utilizing our latest GLF, the contribution of radio galaxies to the extragalactic gamma-ray background is found to be 1--10\%. We further investigated the nature of gamma-ray-loud radio galaxies. Compared to radio or X-ray flux-limited radio galaxy samples, the gamma-ray selected sample tends to lack high radio power galaxies like FR-II radio galaxies. We also found that only $\sim$10\% of radio galaxies are GeV gamma-ray loud. Radio galaxies may contribute to the cosmic MeV gamma-ray background comparable to blazars if gamma-ray-quiet radio galaxies have X-ray to gamma-ray spectra like Cen A, with a small gamma-ray to X-ray flux ratio., Comment: ApJ accepted, 45 pages, 11 figures

The diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL) is formed by ultraviolet (UV), optical, and infrared (IR) photons mainly produced by star formation processes over the history of the Universe, and contains essential information about galaxy evolution and cosmology. Here, we present a new determination of the evolving EBL spectral energy distribution using a novel approach purely based on galaxy data aiming to reduce current uncertainties on the higher redshifts and IR intensities. Our calculations use multiwavelength observations from the UV to the far-IR of a sample of approximately 150,000 galaxies detected up to $z\sim 6$ in the five fields of the Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) from the Hubble Space Telescope. This is one of the most comprehensive and deepest multi-wavelength galaxy datasets ever obtained. These unprecedented resources allow us to derive the overall EBL evolution up to $z\sim 6$ and its uncertainties. Our results agree with cosmic observables estimated from galaxy surveys and $\gamma$-ray attenuation such as monochromatic luminosity densities, including those in the far-IR, and star formation rate densities, also at the highest redshits. The majority of the activity around nearby (z ~ 0) supermassive black holes is found in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN), the most of them being classified as low ionization nuclear emission regions. Although these sources are well studied from radio up to X-rays, they are poorly understood in gamma-rays. In this work we take advantage of the all sky-surveying capabilities of the Large Area Telescope on board Fermi Gamma ray Space Telescope to study the whole Palomar sample of LLAGN in gamma-rays. Precisely, the four radio-brightest LLAGN in the sample are identified as significant gamma-ray emitters, all of which are recognized as powerful Fanaroff-Riley I galaxies. These results suggest that the presence of powerful radio jets is of substantial importance for observing a significant gamma-ray counterpart even if these jets are misaligned with respect to the line of sight. We also find that most of the X-ray-brightest LLAGN do not have a significant gamma-ray and strong radio emission, suggesting that the X-rays come mainly from the accretion flow in these cases. A detailed analysis of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of NGC 315 and NGC 4261, both detected in gamma-rays, is provided where we make a detailed comparison between the predicted hadronic gamma-ray emission from a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) and the gamma-ray emission from a leptonic jet-dominated synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. Multiwavelength monitoring of the blazar 3C 279 observed a very bright, 12-hour, orphan gamma-ray flare on 20 Dec 2013 with a uniquely hard Fermi-LAT spectrum and high Compton dominance. We work with a one-zone, leptonic model with both first- and second-order Fermi acceleration, which now reproduces the unique flaring behavior. We present a simplified analytic electron energy distribution to provide intuition about how particle acceleration shapes multi-wavelength blazar jet emission spectra. The contributions of individual processes in relativistic jets is fundamental to understanding the particle energy budget in the formation and propagation of astrophysical jets. We show that first- and second-order Fermi acceleration are sufficient to explain the flare, and that magnetic reconnection is not needed. Our analysis suggests that the flare is initiated by an increase in the particle energies due to shock acceleration, which also increases the stochastic acceleration. The higher energy particle preferentially occupy the outer jet, along the sheath, which decreases the apparent magnetic field and synchrotron radiation, while increasing electron exposure to the broad line region photon fields, driving up the external Compton emission., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, High Energy Phenomena in Relativistic Outflows VII (HEPRO VII) Meeting

The broadband spectrum from the 2013 December 20 $\gamma$-ray flare from 3C~279 is analyzed with our previously-developed one-zone blazar jet model. We are able to reproduce two SEDs, a quiescent and flaring state, the latter of which had an unusual SED, with hard $\gamma$-ray spectrum, high Compton dominance, and short duration. Our model suggests that there is insufficient energy for a comparable X-ray flare to have occurred simultaneously, which is an important constraint given the lack of X-ray data. We show that first- and second-order Fermi acceleration are sufficient to explain the flare, and that magnetic reconnection is not needed. The model includes particle acceleration, escape, and adiabatic and radiative energy losses, including the full Compton cross-section, and emission from the synchrotron, synchrotron self-Compton, and external Compton processes. The All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) is a probe class mission concept that will provide essential contributions to multimessenger astrophysics in the late 2020s and beyond. AMEGO combines high sensitivity in the 200 keV to 10 GeV energy range with a wide field of view, good spectral resolution, and polarization sensitivity. Therefore, AMEGO is key in the study of multimessenger astrophysical objects that have unique signatures in the gamma-ray regime, such as neutron star mergers, supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. The Hubble constant $H_{0}$ and matter density $\Omega_{m}$ of the Universe are measured using the latest $\gamma$-ray attenuation results from Fermi-LAT and Cherenkov telescopes. This methodology is based upon the fact that the extragalactic background light supplies opacity for very high energy photons via photon-photon interaction. The amount of $\gamma$-ray attenuation along the line of sight depends on the expansion rate and matter content of the Universe. This novel strategy results in a value of $H_{0}=67.4_{-6.2}^{+6.0}$~km~s$^{-1}$~Mpc$^{-1}$ and $\Omega_{m}=0.14_{-0.07}^{+0.06}$. These estimates are independent and complementary to those based on the distance ladder, cosmic microwave background (CMB), clustering with weak lensing, and strong lensing data. We also produce a joint likelihood analysis of our results from $\gamma$ rays and these from more mature methodologies, excluding the CMB, yielding a combined value of $H_{0}=66.6\pm 1.6$~km~s$^{-1}$~Mpc$^{-1}$ and $\Omega_{m}=0.29\pm 0.02$., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. This White Paper explores advances in the study of Active Galaxies which will be enabled by new observing capabilities at MeV energies (hard X-rays to gamma-rays; 0.1-1000 MeV), with a focus on multi-wavelength synergies. This spectral window, covering four decades in energy, is one of the last frontiers for which we lack sensitive observations. Only the COMPTEL mission, which flew in the 1990s, has significantly probed this energy range, detecting a handful of AGN. In comparison, the currently active Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, observing at the adjacent range of 0.1-100 GeV, is 100-1000 times more sensitive. This White Paper describes advances to be made in the study of sources as diverse as tidal disruption events, jetted AGN of all classes (blazars, compact steep-spectrum sources, radio galaxies and relics) as well as radio-quiet AGN, most of which would be detected for the first time in this energy regime. New and existing technologies will enable MeV observations at least 50-100 times more sensitive than COMPTEL, revealing new source populations and addressing several open questions, including the nature of the corona emission in non-jetted AGN, the precise level of the optical extragalactic background light, the accretion mode in low-luminosity AGN, and the structure and particle content of extragalactic jets., Comment: ASTRO2020 White Paper submitted by subset of the AMEGO team

The high-energy universe has revealed that energetic particles are ubiquitous in the cosmos and play a vital role in the cultivation of cosmic environments on all scales. Though they play a key role in cultivating the cosmological environment and/or enabling our studies of it, there is still much we do not know about AGNs and GRBs, particularly the avenue in which and through which they supply radiation and energetic particles, namely their jets. The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) can be probed via the absorption imprint it leaves in the spectra of gamma-ray sources ($\gamma\gamma \rightarrow e^-e^+$). We recently developed a dedicated technique to reconstruct the EBL, and its evolution with redshift, from $\gamma$ ray optical depth data using a large sample of blazars detected by the $Fermi$ Large Area Telescope. Here, we extend this dataset to the TeV regime using ground-based Cherenkov observations of 38 blazars and report the first homogeneous measurement of the EBL spectral intensity covering the ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths ($\sim$0.1-100$\mathrm{\mu m}$). A minimal EBL throughout the wavelength range with respect to integrated galaxy light is found, allowing little additional unresolved emission from faint or truly diffuse populations setting an upper limit of $\lesssim 4~{\rm nW\cdot m^{-2}sr^{-1}}$ at 1.4 ${\rm \mu m}$. In particular, the cosmic optical background (COB) at $z=0$ is found to be $27.8_{-2.0}^{+2.1}~{\rm nW\cdot m^{-2}sr^{-1}}$. This work lays the foundation for accurate gamma-ray measurements of the EBL across its whole spectral range using a combination of GeV and TeV data.

In 2007 September, the Crab Nebula exhibited a bright gamma-ray flare in the GeV energy range that was detected by AGILE. The observed emission at >160 MeV indicates that the radiating electrons had energies above the classical synchrotron radiation-reaction limit, thus presenting a serious challenge to classical models for electron acceleration in astrophysical environments. In this paper, we apply our recently developed time-dependent self-similar analytical model describing electrostatic acceleration in the explosive reconnection region around the pulsar wind termination shock to the 2007 September flare. This event was unique in that it displayed both long-duration "wave" and short-duration "sub-flare" features. The unusual temporal variation makes this flare an especially interesting test for our model. We demonstrate that our model can reproduce the time-dependent gamma-ray spectrum for this event, as well as the associated gamma-ray light curve, obtained by integrating the spectrum for photon energies >100 MeV. This establishes that our time-dependent electrostatic acceleration model can explain both wave and sub-flare transients, which lends further support to the theoretical framework we have developed. We also further examine the validity of the self-similar electric and magnetic field evolution implied by our model. We conclude that strong electrostatic acceleration driven by shock-induced magnetic reconnection is able to power the Crab Nebula gamma-ray flares by energizing the electrons on sub-Larmor timescales., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

I show that by assuming a standard Blandford-Konigl jet, it is possible to determine the bulk Lorentz factor and angle to the line of sight of self-similar parsec-scale blazar jets by using five measured quantities: redshift, core radio flux, extended radio flux, the magnitude of the core shift between two frequencies, and apparent jet opening angle. From the bulk Lorentz factor and angle computed with this method, one can compute other jet properties such as the Doppler factor, magnetic field strength, and intrinsic jet opening angle. I use data taken from the literature and marginalize over nuisance parameters associated with the electron distribution and equipartition to compute these quantities, although the errors are large. Results are generally consistent with constraints from other methods. The $\gamma$-ray flares from the Crab nebula observed by {\it AGILE} and {\it Fermi}-LAT between 2007-2013 reached GeV photon energies and lasted several days. The strongest emission, observed during the 2011 April "super-flare," exceeded the quiescent level by more than an order of magnitude. These observations challenge the standard models for particle acceleration in pulsar wind nebulae, because the radiating electrons have energies exceeding the classical radiation-reaction limit for synchrotron. Particle-in-cell simulations have suggested that the classical synchrotron limit can be exceeded if the electrons also experience electrostatic acceleration due to shock-driven magnetic reconnection. In this paper, we revisit the problem using an analytic approach based on solving a fully time-dependent electron transport equation describing the electrostatic acceleration, synchrotron losses, and escape experienced by electrons in a magnetically confined plasma "blob" as it encounters and passes through the pulsar-wind termination shock. We show that our model can reproduce the $\gamma$-ray spectra observed during the rising and decaying phases of each of the two sub-flare components of the 2011 April super-flare. We integrate the spectrum for photon energies $\ge 100\,$MeV to obtain the light curve for the event, which agrees with the observations. We find that strong electrostatic acceleration occurs on both sides of the termination shock, driven by magnetic reconnection. We also find that the dominant mode of particle escape changes from diffusive escape to advective escape as the blob passes through the shock., Comment: 8 figures, 29 pages

The extragalactic background light (EBL), from ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths, is predominantly due to emission from stars, accreting black holes and reprocessed light due to Galactic dust. The EBL can be studied through the imprint it leaves, via $\gamma$-$\gamma$ absorption of high-energy photons, in the spectra of distant $\gamma$-ray sources. The EBL has been probed through the search for the attenuation it produces in the spectra of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects and individual $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs). GRBs have significant advantages over blazars for the study of the EBL especially at high redshifts. Here we analyze a combined sample of twenty-two GRBs, detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope between 65 MeV and 500 GeV. We report a marginal detection (at the ~2.8 $\sigma$ level) of the EBL attenuation in the stacked spectra of the source sample. This measurement represents a first constraint of the EBL at an effective redshift of ~1.8. We combine our results with prior EBL constraints and conclude that Fermi-LAT is instrumental to constrain the UV component of the EBL. We introduce a new theoretical model to describe the emitting region in a blazar jet. We assume a one-zone leptonic picture, and construct the particle transport equation for a plasma blob experiencing low-energy, monoenergetic particle injection, energy dependent particle escape, shock acceleration, adiabatic expansion, stochastic acceleration, synchrotron radiation, and external Compton radiation from the dust torus and broad line region. We demonstrate that a one-zone leptonic model is able to explain the IR though {\gamma}-ray spectrum for 3C 279 in 2008-2009. We determine that the broad-line region seed photons cannot be adequately described by a single average distribution, but rather we find that a stratified broad line region provides an improvement in the estimation of the distance of the emitting region from the black hole. We calculate that the jet is not always in equipartition between the particles and magnetic field, and find that stochastic acceleration provides more energy to the particles than does shock acceleration, where the latter is also overshadowed by adiabatic losses. We further introduce a novel technique to implement numerical boundary conditions and determine the global normalization for the electron distribution, based on analysis of stiff ordinary differential equations. Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) exceed the Eddington luminosity for a $\approx 10M_\odot$ black hole. The recent detection of black hole mergers by the gravitational wave detector ALIGO indicates that black holes with masses $> 10 M_\odot$ do indeed exist. Motivated by this, we explore a scenario where ULXs consist of black holes formed by the collapse of high-mass, low-metallicity stars, and that these ULXs become binary black holes (BBHs) that eventually merge. We use empirical relations between the number of ULXs and the star formation rate and host galaxy metallicity to estimate the ULX formation rate and the BBH merger rate at all redshifts. This assumes the ULX rate is directly proportional to the star formation rate for a given metallicity, and that the black hole accretion rate is distributed as a log-normal distribution. We include an enhancement in the ULX formation rate at earlier epochs due to lower mean metallicities. With simplified assumptions, our model is able to reproduce both the rate and mass distribution of BBH mergers in the nearby universe inferred from the detection of GW 150914, LVT 151012, GW 151226, and GW 170104 by ALIGO if the peak accretion rate of ULXs is a factor $\approx$1 --- 300 greater than the Eddington rate. Our predictions of the BBH merger rate, mass distribution, and redshift evolution can be tested by ALIGO in the near future, which in turn can be used to explore connections between the ULX formation and BBH merger rates over cosmic time., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. Quasi-simultaneous observations of the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar PKS 2326-502 were carried out in the gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, near-infrared, and radio bands. Thanks to these observations we are able to characterize the spectral energy distribution of the source during two flaring and one quiescent gamma-ray states. These data were used to constrain one-zone leptonic models of the spectral energy distributions of each flare and investigate the physical conditions giving rise to them. While modeling one flare only required changes to the electron spectrum, the other flare needed changes in both the electron spectrum and the size of the emitting region with respect to the quiescent state. The {\gamma}-ray flares from the Crab nebula observed by AGILE and Fermi-LAT reaching GeV energies and lasting several days challenge the standard models for particle acceleration in pulsar wind nebulae, because the radiating electrons have energies exceeding the classical radiation-reaction limit for synchrotron. Previous modeling has suggested that the synchrotron limit can be exceeded if the electrons experience electrostatic acceleration, but the resulting spectra do not agree very well with the data. As a result, there are still some important unanswered questions about the detailed particle acceleration and emission processes occurring during the flares. We revisit the problem using a new analytical approach based on an electron transport equation that includes terms describing electrostatic acceleration, stochastic wave-particle acceleration, shock acceleration, synchrotron losses, and particle escape. An exact solution is obtained for the electron distribution, which is used to compute the associated {\gamma}-ray synchrotron spectrum. We find that in our model the {\gamma}-ray flares are mainly powered by electrostatic acceleration, but the contributions from stochastic and shock acceleration play an important role in producing the observed spectral shapes. Our model can reproduce the spectra of all the Fermi-LAT and AGILE flares from the Crab nebula, using magnetic field strengths in agreement with the multi-wavelength observational constraints. We also compute the spectrum and duration of the synchrotron afterglow created by the accelerated electrons, after they escape into the region on the downstream side of the pulsar wind termination shock. The afterglow is expected to fade over a maximum period of about three weeks after the {\gamma}-ray flare., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

I study the location of the $\gamma$-ray emission in blazar jets by creating a Compton-scattering approximation valid for all anisotropic radiation fields in the Thomson through Klein-Nishina regimes, which is highly accurate and can speed up numerical calculations by up to a factor $\sim10$. I apply this approximation to synchrotron self-Compton, and external Compton-scattering of photons from the accretion disk, broad-line region (BLR), and dust torus. I use a stratified BLR model and include detailed Compton-scattering calculations of a spherical and flattened BLR. I create two dust torus models, one where the torus is an annulus, and one where it is an extended disk. I present detailed calculations of the photoabsorption optical depth using my detailed BLR and dust torus models, including the full angle dependence. I apply these calculations to the emission from a relativistically moving blob traveling through these radiation fields. The ratio of $\gamma$-ray to optical flux produces a predictable pattern that could help locate the $\gamma$-ray emission region. I show that the bright flare from 3C 454.3 in 2010 November detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope is unlikely to originate from a single blob inside the BLR since it moves outside the BLR in a time shorter than the flare duration, although emission by multiple blobs inside the BLR is possible; and $\gamma$-rays are unlikely to originate from outside the BLR from scattering of photons from an extended dust torus, since then the cooling timescale would be too long to explain the observed short variability., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 22 pages, 19 Figures, 5 Tables

Electromagnetic radiation from blazar jets often displays strong variability, extending from radio to $\gamma$-ray frequencies. In a few cases, this variability has been characterized using Fourier time lags, such as those detected in the X-rays from Mrk~421 using BeppoSAX. The lack of a theoretical framework to interpret the data has motivated us to develop a new model for the formation of the X-ray spectrum and the time lags in blazar jets based on a transport equation including terms describing stochastic Fermi acceleration, synchrotron losses, shock acceleration, adiabatic expansion, and spatial diffusion. We derive the exact solution for the Fourier transform of the electron distribution, and use it to compute the Fourier transform of the synchrotron radiation spectrum and the associated X-ray time lags. The same theoretical framework is also used to compute the peak flare X-ray spectrum, assuming that a steady-state electron distribution is achieved during the peak of the flare. The model parameters are constrained by comparing the theoretical predictions with the observational data for Mrk~421. The resulting integrated model yields, for the first time, a complete first-principles physical explanation for both the formation of the observed time lags and the shape of the peak flare X-ray spectrum. It also yields direct estimates of the strength of the shock and the stochastic MHD wave acceleration components in the Mrk~421 jet.

Blazars are active galactic nuclei with relativistic jets pointed at the Earth, making them extremely bright at essentially all wavelengths, from radio to gamma rays. Distant BL Lacertae objects emit $\gamma$ rays which interact with the extragalactic background light (EBL), creating electron-positron pairs, and reducing the flux measured by ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) at very-high energies (VHE). These pairs can Compton-scatter the cosmic microwave background, creating a $\gamma$-ray signature at slightly lower energies observable by the \fermi\ Large Area Telescope (LAT). This signal is strongly dependent on the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) strength ($B$) and its coherence length ($L_B$). We use IACT spectra taken from the literature for 5 VHE-detected BL Lac objects, and combine it with LAT spectra for these sources to constrain these IGMF parameters. Low $B$ values can be ruled out by the constraint that the cascade flux cannot exceed that observed by the LAT. High values of $B$ can be ruled out from the constraint that the EBL-deabsorbed IACT spectrum cannot be greater than the LAT spectrum extrapolated into the VHE band, unless the cascade spectrum contributes a sizable fraction of the LAT flux. We rule out low $B$ values ($B< 10^{-19}$ G for $L_B\ge1$\ Mpc) at $>5\sigma$ in all trials with different EBL models and data selection, except when using $>1$ GeV spectra and the lowest EBL models. The strong variability of blazars can be characterized by power spectral densities (PSDs) and Fourier frequency-dependent time lags. In previous work, we created a new theoretical formalism for describing the PSDs and time lags produced via a combination of stochastic particle injection and emission via the synchrotron, synchrotron self-Compton, and external Compton (EC) processes. This formalism used the Thomson cross section and simple $\delta$-function approximations to model the synchrotron and Compton emissivities. Here we expand upon this work, using the full Compton cross section and detailed and accurate emissivities. Our results indicate good agreement between the PSDs computed using the $\delta$-function approximations and those computed using the accurate expressions, provided the observed photons are produced primarily by electrons with energies exceeding the lower limit of the injected particle population. Breaks are found in the PSDs at frequencies corresponding to the cooling timescales of the electrons primarily responsible for the observed emission, and the associated time lags are related to the difference in electron cooling timescales between the two energy channels, as expected. If the electron cooling timescales can be determined from the observed time lags and/or the observed EC PSDs, then one could in principle use the method developed here to determine the energy of the external seed photon source for EC, which is an important unsolved problem in blazar physics., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Fermi-LAT analyses show that the gamma-ray photon spectral indices Gamma_gamma of a large sample of blazars correlate with the vFv peak synchrotron frequency v_s according to the relation Gamma_gamma = d - k log v_s. The same function, with different constants d and k, also describes the relationship between Gamma_gamma and peak Compton frequency v_C. This behavior is derived analytically using an equipartition blazar model with a log-parabola description of the electron energy distribution (EED). In the Thomson regime, k = k_EC = 3b/4 for external Compton processes and k = k_SSC = 9b/16 for synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) processes, where b is the log-parabola width parameter of the EED. The BL Lac object Mrk 501 is fit with a synchrotron/SSC model given by the log-parabola EED, and is best fit away from equipartition. Corrections are made to the spectral-index diagrams for a low-energy power-law EED and departures from equipartition, as constrained by absolute jet power. Analytic expressions are compared with numerical values derived from self-Compton and external Compton scattered gamma-ray spectra from Ly alpha broad-line region and IR target photons. The Gamma_gamma vs. v_s behavior in the model depends strongly on b, with progressively and predictably weaker dependences on gamma-ray detection range, variability time, and isotropic gamma-ray luminosity. Implications for blazar unification and blazars as ultra-high energy cosmic-ray sources are presented. Arguments by Ghisellini et al. We performed a systematic X-ray study of eight nearby gamma-ray bright radio galaxies with Suzaku for understanding the origin of their X-ray emissions. The Suzaku spectra for five of those have been presented previously, while the remaining three (M87, PKS0625-354, and 3C78) are presented here for the first time. Based on the Fe-K line strength, X-ray variability, and X-ray power-law photon indices, and using additional information on the [O III] line emission, we argue for a jet origin of the observed X-ray emission in these three sources. We also analyzed five years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) GeV gamma-ray data on PKS0625-354 and 3C78 to understand these sources within the blazar picture. We found significant gamma-ray variability in the former object. Overall, we note that the Suzaku spectra for both PKS0625-354 and 3C78 are rather soft, while the LAT spectra are unusually hard when compared with other gamma-ray detected low-power (FR I) radio galaxies. We demonstrate that the constructed broad-band spectral energy distributions of PKS0625-354 and 3C78 are well described by a one-zone synchrotron/synchrotron self-Compton model. The results of the modeling indicate lower bulk Lorentz factors compared to those typically found in other BL Lac objects, but consistent with the values inferred from modeling other LAT-detected FR\,I radio galaxies. Interestingly, the modeling also implies very high peak ($\sim 10^{16}$ Hz) synchrotron frequencies in the two analyzed sources, contrary to previously-suggested scenarios for FR I/BL Lac unification. Blazars display strong variability on multiple timescales and in multiple radiation bands. Their variability is often characterized by power spectral densities (PSDs) and time lags plotted as functions of the Fourier frequency. We develop a new theoretical model based on the analysis of the electron transport (continuity) equation, carried out in the Fourier domain. The continuity equation includes electron cooling and escape, and a derivation of the emission properties includes light travel time effects associated with a radiating blob in a relativistic jet. The model successfully reproduces the general shapes of the observed PSDs and predicts specific PSD and time lag behaviors associated with variability in the synchrotron, synchrotron self-Compton (SSC), and external Compton (EC) emission components, from sub-mm to gamma-rays. We discuss applications to BL Lacertae objects and to flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), where there are hints that some of the predicted features have already been observed. We also find that FSRQs should have steeper PSD power-law indices than BL Lac objects at Fourier frequencies < 10^{-4} Hz, in qualitative agreement with previously reported observations by the Fermi Large Area Telescope., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. PKS2142-75 (a.k.a. 2FGL J2147.4-7534) is a flat-spectrum radio quasar that was observed quasi-simultaneously by a suite of instruments across the elec- tromagnetic spectrum during two flaring states in April 2010 and August 2011 as well as a quiescent state in December 2011 through January 2012. The results of these campaigns and model spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the active and quiescent states are presented. The SED model parameters of PKS 2142-75 indicate that the two flares of the source are created by unique physical conditions. SED studies of flat spectrum radio quasars are beginning to indicate that there might be two types of flares, those that can be described purely by changes in the electron distribution and those that require changes in other parameters, such as the magnetic field strength or the size of the emitting region., Comment: 32 page,6 figures

The blazar sequence is reflected in a correlation of the peak luminosity versus peak frequency of the synchrotron component of blazars. This correlation has been considered one of the fundamental pieces of evidence for the existence of a continuous sequence that includes low-power BL Lacertae objects through high-power flat spectrum radio quasars. A correlation between the Compton domi- nance, the ratio of the Compton to synchrotron luminosities, and the peak synchrotron frequency is another piece of evidence for the existence of the blazar sequence explored by Fossati et al. (1998). Since that time, however, it has essentially been ignored. We explore this correlation with a sample based on the second LAT AGN catalog (2LAC), and show that is is particularly important, since it is independent of redshift. Does the "blazar sequence" exist, or is it a result of a selection effect, due to the difficulty in measuring the redshifts of blazars with both high synchrotron peak frequencies (\gtrsim 10^{15} Hz) and luminosities (\gtrsim 10^{46} erg s^{-1})? We explore this question with a sample of blazars from the Second Catalog of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). The Compton dominance, the ratio of the peak of the Compton to the synchrotron peak luminosities, is essentially a redshift-independent quantity, and thus crucial to answering this question. We find that a correlation exists between Compton dominance and the peak frequency of the synchrotron component for all blazars in the sample, including ones with unknown redshift. We then construct a simple model to explain the blazar properties in our sample, where the difference between sources is due to only the magnetic field of the blazar jet emitting region, the external radiation field energy density, and the jet angle to the line of sight, with the magnetic field strength and external energy density being correlated. This model can reproduce the trends of the blazars in the sample, and predicts blazars may be discovered in the future with high synchrotron peak frequencies and luminosities. PKS 2142-758 is a flat spectrum radio quasar which emits few, weak but significant gamma-ray flares in the MeV through GeV energy range. The first flare occured on April 4th, 2010, when the source reached a daily flux of (1.1 \pm 0.3) * 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 (ATEL #2539) in the 100 MeV to 300 GeV range. This flux represented more than an order of magnitude increase over its quiescent flux. Since the initial flare, this source has been detected in an elevated state within the same energy range from October to November of 2010 and another period ranging from July to August of 2011. During the latest flaring period in 2011 a multi wavelength observing campaign was carried out using the Ceduna radio telescope, the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the TANAMI VLBI Array, Swift, the Rapid Eye Mount Telescope (REM), and the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board Fermi. These quasi-simultaneous data were used to construct a broadband SED of this object in its rare active state. We present these observations and the resulting SED and some preliminary analysis of the constraints they place on the high energy emission from this object., Comment: Conference Proceedings

A simple formalism to describe nonthermal electron acceleration, evolution, and radiation in supernova remnants (SNRs) is presented. The electron continuity equation is analytically solved assuming that the nonthermal electron injection power is proportional to the rate at which the kinetic energy of matter swept up in an adiabatically expanding SNR shell. We apply this model to \fermi\ and HESS data from the SNR \rxj, and find that a one-zone leptonic model with Compton-scattered cosmic microwave background (CMB) and interstellar infrared photons has difficulty providing a good fit to its spectral energy distribution, provided the source is at a distance $\sim 1\ \kpc$ from the Earth. However, the inclusion of multiple zones, as hinted at by recent {\em Chandra} observations, does provide a good fit, but requires a second zone of compact knots with magnetic fields $B\sim 16\ \mu$G, comparable to shock-compressed fields found in the bulk of the remnant., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables (emulateapj). Lower limits on the power emitted in ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), which are assumed to be protons with energy 1e17-1e20 eV, are derived for TeV blazars with the assumption that the observed TeV gamma rays are generated due to interactions of these protons with cosmic microwave photons. The limits depend on the spectrum of the injected UHECR protons. While for a -2.2 injection spectrum, the lower limits on the powers emitted in UHECRs by 1ES 0229+200, 1ES 1101-232 and 1ES 0347-121 are lower than their respective synchrotron luminosities (1e46 erg/s); in the case of 1ES 1426+428 it exceeds the corresponding synchrotron luminosity by up to an order of magnitude. The proposed Auger North Observatory should be able to detect 4e19 eV cosmic ray protons from 1ES 1426+428 within a few years of operation and test the TeV gamma-ray production model by UHECR energy losses while propagating along the line-of-sight, or constrain the intergalactic magnetic field to be larger than 1e-16 G in case of no detection. The lower limits on the apparent-isotropic jet power from accelerated 1e10-1e20 eV proton spectra in the blazar jet is of the order of the Eddington luminosity of a 1e9 solar mass black hole for a cosmic-ray injection spectrum -2.2 or harder for all blazars considered except for 1ES 1426+428. In the case of the latter the apparent-isotropic jet power exceeds the Eddington luminosity by an order of magnitude. For an injection spectrum softer than -2.2, as is required to fit the observed cosmic-ray data above 1e17-1e18 eV, the Eddington luminosity is exceeded by the lower limits on the jet power for all blazars considered., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, typos fixed, ApJ (in press)

Recent claims that the strength B_IGMF of the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) is >~ 1e-15 G are based on upper limits to the expected cascade flux in the GeV band produced by blazar TeV photons absorbed by the extragalactic background light. This limit depends on an assumption that the mean blazar TeV flux remains constant on timescales >~2 (B_ IGMF/1e-18 G)^2 / (E/{10 GeV})^2 yr for an IGMF coherence length ~ 1 Mpc, where E is the measured photon energy. Restricting TeV activity of 1ES 0229+200 to ~3 -- 4 years during which the source has been observed leads to a more robust lower limit of B_IGMF >~ 1e-18 G, which can be larger by an order of magnitude if the intrinsic source flux above ~5 -- 10 TeV from 1ES 0229+200 is strong., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figs, contains revised analysis, accepted in ApJL

The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) from the infrared (IR) through the ultraviolet (UV) is dominated by emission from stars, either directly or through absorption and reradiation by dust. It can thus give information on the star formation history of the universe. However, it is difficult to measure directly due to foreground radiation fields from the Galaxy and solar system. Gamma-rays from extragalactic sources at cosmological distances (blazars and gamma-ray bursts) interact with EBL photons creating electron-positron pairs, absorbing the gamma-rays. Given the intrinsic gamma-ray spectrum of a source and its redshift, the EBL can in principle be measured. However, the intrinsic gamma-ray spectra of blazars and GRBs can vary considerably from source to source and the from the same source over short timescales. A maximum intrinsic spectrum can be assumed from theoretical grounds, to give upper limits on the EBL absorption from blazars at low redshift with very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations with ground-based Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The Fermi-LAT observations of blazars and GRBs can probe EBL absorption at higher redshifts. The lower energy portion of the LAT spectrum of these sources is unattenuated by the EBL, so that extrapolating this to higher energies can give the maximum intrinsic spectrum for a source. Comparing this to the observed higher energy LAT spectrum will then give upper limits on the EBL absorption. For blazars which have been detected by both the Fermi-LAT and at higher energies by Cherenkov telescopes, combined LAT-VHE observations can put more stringent constraints on the low redshift EBL. These procedures above can also be reversed: for sources with an unknown redshift, a given EBL model and gamma-ray spectrum can lead to an upper limit on the source's redshift., Comment: 4 page, 1 figure. Fermi Gamma ray Space Telescope observations of the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C~454.3 show a spectral-index change $\Delta \Gamma \cong 1.2\pm 0.3$ at break energy $E_{br} \approx 2.4\pm0.3$ GeV. Such a sharp break is inconsistent with a cooling electron distribution and is poorly fit with a synchrotron self-Compton model. We show that a combination of two components, namely the Compton-scattered disk and broad-line region (BLR) radiations, explains this spectral break and gives a good fit to the quasi-simultaneous radio, optical/UV, X-ray, and $\gamma$-ray spectral energy distribution observed in 2008 August. A sharp break can be produced independent of the emitting region's distance from the central black hole if the BLR has a gradient in density $\propto R^{-2}$, consistent with a wind model for the BLR., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. We propose a method for setting upper limits to the extragalactic background light (EBL). Our method uses simultaneous {\em Fermi}-LAT and ground-based TeV observations of blazars and is based on the assumption that the intrinsic spectral energy distribution (SED) of TeV blazars lies below the extrapolation of the {\em Fermi}-LAT SED from GeV to TeV energies. By extrapolating the {\em Fermi}-LAT spectrum, which for TeV blazars is practically unattenuated by photon-photon pair production with EBL photons, a firm upper limit on the intrinsic SED at TeV energies is provided. The ratio of the extrapolated spectrum to the observed TeV spectrum provides upper limits to the optical depth for the propagation of the TeV photons due to pair production on the EBL, which in turn sets firm upper limits to EBL models. We demonstrate our method using simultaneous observations from {\em Fermi}-LAT and ground-based TeV telescopes of the blazars \object{PKS 2155-304} and \object{1ES 1218+304}, and show that high EBL density models are disfavored. Fermi gamma-ray telescope data of GRB 080916C with ~1e55 erg in apparent isotropic gamma-ray energy, show a several second delay between the rise of 100 MeV - GeV radiation compared with keV - MeV radiation. Here we show that synchrotron radiation from cosmic ray protons accelerated in GRBs, delayed by the proton synchrotron cooling timescale in a jet of magnetically-dominated shocked plasma moving at highly relativistic speeds with bulk Lorentz factor Gamma ~ 500, could explain this result. A second generation electron synchrotron component from attenuated proton synchrotron radiation makes enhanced soft X-ray to MeV gamma-ray emission. Long GRBs with narrow, energetic jets accelerating particles to ultra-high energies could explain the Auger observations of UHE cosmic rays from sources within 100 Mpc for nano-Gauss intergalactic magnetic fields. The total energy requirements in a proton synchrotron model are proportional to Gamma^(16/3). The extragalactic background light (EBL) from the far infrared through the visible and extending into the ultraviolet is thought to be dominated by starlight, either through direct emission or through absorption and reradiation by dust. This is the most important energy range for absorbing $\g$-rays from distant sources such as blazars and gamma-ray bursts and producing electron positron pairs. In previous work we presented EBL models in the optical through ultraviolet by consistently taking into account the star formation rate (SFR), initial mass function (IMF) and dust extinction, and treating stars on the main sequence as blackbodies. This technique is extended to include post-main sequence stars and reprocessing of starlight by dust. In our simple model, the total energy absorbed by dust is assumed to be re-emitted as three blackbodies in the infrared, one at 40 K representing warm, large dust grains, one at 70 K representing hot, small dust grains, and one at 450 K representing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. We find our best fit model combining the Hopkins and Beacom SFR using the Cole et al. parameterization with the Baldry and Glazebrook IMF agrees with available luminosity density data at a variety of redshifts. Our resulting EBL energy density is quite close to the lower limits from galaxy counts and in some cases below the lower limits, and agrees fairly well with other recent EBL models shortward of about 5 $\mu$m. Deabsorbing TeV $\g$-ray spectra of various blazars with our EBL model gives results consistent with simple shock acceleration theory. EBL photons absorb gamma-rays from distant blazars, allowing one to use blazar spectra from atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (ACTs) to put upper limits on the EBL by assuming a blazar source spectrum. Here we apply a simple technique, similar to the one developed by Schroedter (2005), to the most recent very-high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations of blazars to put upper limits on the EBL energy density. This technique is independent of the EBL model and has well-defined errors on the constraints. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have long been considered as candidates of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). We investigate the signatures of CR proton acceleration in the GRBs by consistently taking into account their hadronic and electromagnetic interactions.
