Malgré le consensus croissant sur la nécessité d'une transition vers des pratiques agricoles plus durables, les céréales et, en particulier, le froment, ont pris du retard dans la conversion à l'agriculture biologique. Parmi les facteurs contribuant à ce retard figure le manque de variétés adaptées à ces pratiques agricoles et à leurs spécificités. Dans cette thèse, nous nous concentrons sur l’une des principales alternatives variétales pour répondre à ce problème :les populations hétérogènes. Par populations hétérogènes, nous désignons ici tout type de diversité intraspécifique, allant des mélanges variétaux jusqu’aux variétés-populations. Un avantage essentiel de cette hétérogénéité est que la présence de contrastes entre plantes peut donner lieu à des mécanismes de facilitation susceptibles d'améliorer les performances des cultures et leur stabilité face à des conditions défavorables. Malgré ces propriétés prometteuses, nous manquons cependant encore de clés pour guider ce type de sélection. Il s’agit là du principal objet de cette thèse.Ces dernières années, la recherche académique semble avoir mis l’accent sur la recherche d'associations de traits pouvant conduire aux mécanismes de facilitation que nous mentionnions ci-dessus. Dans ce travail, nous avons choisi de nous intéresser également à un autre type d'interaction qui a lieu au sein des populations hétérogènes :la compétition. En particulier, nous avons émis l'hypothèse qu'un certain type de compétition, que nous appelons « compétition individualiste », pourrait avoir des effets négatifs sur la culture. En effet, il arrive parfois que la sélection naturelle nous joue des tours en favorisant des individus qui ont pourtant un moindre potentiel de rendement, ou qui contribuent moins à la facilitation. Par conséquent, plus que la seule facilitation, le principal déterminant de la performance des populations hétérogènes pourrait plus précisément être l'équilibre entre compétition et facilitation. We argue that one of the reasons for this is the lack of varieties that are adapted to these farming practices and their specificities. In this thesis, we focus on a main varietal alternative to respond to this issue: intra-crop diversity. By intra-crop diversity, we mean anything from variety mixtures to evolutionary populations, which we hereafter refer to with the umbrella term “heterogeneous stands”. One main advantage of intra-crop diversity is that trait contrasts between crop plants can give rise to facilitative mechanisms which can enhance crop performance and its stability in the face of unpredictable adverse conditions. However, we still know little about how to breed these heterogeneous stands. This is the main question that we try to address in this thesis.In recent years, a primary focus in the literature has been to identify favorable trait associations that can lead to facilitation. Here, we chose to also lend an eye to another type of plant interaction that unfolds in heterogeneous stands: competition. Indeed, we hypothesized that a specific type of competition, which we call “selfish competition”, could lead to negative effects on the crop. Sometimes, natural selection can indeed play tricks on us and favor genotypes that have lower grain yield potential or contribute less to facilitation. Hence, more than simply facilitation, it is the balance between competition and facilitation that may actually be the main determinant of heterogeneous stand performance. In chapters II and III, we thus sought to assess if selfish competition could indeed hinder heterogeneous stand performance, and to identify some of its underlying causes (with a focus on trait contrasts and sowing density). A winter wheat composite cross population (CCP), created in the UK in 2001, has been grown in Germany, Hungary, and the UK since 2005 (F5 generation). In 2008/09 (F8), a cycling pattern for the populations was developed between partners to test the effects of rapidly changing environments on agronomic performance and morphological characteristics. One CCP was grown by eight partners for one year and subsequently sent to the next partner, creating “cycling CCPs” with different histories. In 2013, all eight cycling CCPs and the three non-cycling CCPs (from Germany, Hungary, and the UK) were included in a two-year experiment in Germany with three line varieties as references. Differing seed weights of the F13 at sowing affected some agronomic parameters under drought conditions in 2014/15 but not under less stressful conditions in 2013/14. In both experimental years, the CCPs were comparable to the line varieties in terms of agronomic performance, with some CCPs yielding more than the varieties under the drought conditions of 2015. The results highlight the potential of CCPs to compete with line varieties, while the overall similarity of the CCPs based on their origin and cycling history for agronomic traits indicates a high buffering potential under highly variable environmental conditions.

In conservation agriculture, conservation tillage potentially influences the physical, chemical, and biological quality of the soil. Although the effects of conservation agriculture on the soil’s physical properties have been studied in conventional management systems, studies on organic farming systems, especially concerning long-term changes, are scarce. This study summarizes the results of physical and mechanical soil parameters obtained over the initial 10 years of different conservation management treatments (plowing versus reduced tillage with and without compost application) in an organic field trial conducted in central Germany. Moreover, as a research objective, the effects of soil conservation measures on soil’s physical quality were evaluated. Differences in the soil’s physical quality during treatments were mainly detected in the topsoil. At a depth of 0.10–0.24 m, the total porosity and air capacity were lower, and the bulk density was higher in the reduced-tillage systems, compared to those of the plowed treatments. Additionally, the soil’s mechanical stability (precompression stress) was higher at a depth of 0.10 m for reduced-tillage systems combined with compost application. In addition, the soil’s aggregate stability was enhanced in the reduced-tillage systems (higher mean weight diameter, as determined via wet sieving). Overall, the reduced-tillage treatments did not exceed the critical physical values of the soil, nor affect the functionality of the soil (saturated hydraulic conductivity), thereby demonstrating its feasibility as a sustainable technique for organic farming. Future studies should include measures to ameliorate compaction zones in reduced-tillage treatments, e.g., by applying subsoiling techniques in combination with deep-rooting crops to prevent limited rooting space resulting from the high mechanical impedance, especially under dry soil conditions.

In ökologischen Kartoffeln wurde die Düngung mit Haarmehlpellets (HMP) und organischem Mulch verglichen. In der Dürre 2020 wurde weniger N in den Mulchvarianten mineralisiert, was zu einem erhöhten N-Auswaschungsrisiko vor Winter, aber keinen sign. Ertragsunterschieden führte.

Die Bruttoerträge, unter Einbezug unbepflanzter Fahrgassen für die Mulchausbringung, wirken sich entscheidend auf die Wirtschaftlichkeit einer regenerativen Kartoffelanbau-Methode unter Transfermulch aus. Außerdem relevant sind die Gestaltung der Mulchprozesskette sowie die Mulcherträge und -kosten.

Mulch aus Gründüngungen wird zur Klimawandelanpassung, Nährstoffversorgung, zum Pflanzenschutz und Bodenfruchtbarkeitsmanagement eingesetzt. Der Workshop stellt den aktuellen Stand des Wissens und der Praxis vor. Er zielt darauf ab, Forschung, Beratung und Landwirte enger miteinander zu verbinden.

Topfversuch wurde die Wirkung von Biostimulanzien auf die Wurzel- und Sprossparameter der Ackerbohne untersucht. Komposttee und sterilisierter Komposttee erhöhten die Trockensubstanz der Wurzel- und Sprossmasse signifikant. Lithokraft® erhöhte das Gewicht der Rhizosheath und der Knöllchen.

Zwei heterogene Winterweizenpopulationen wurden über zwei Anbausaisons (2020/21 und 2021/22) auf 10 Biobetrieben im Vergleich zu einer Liniensorte getestet. Ergebnisse aus beiden Jahren werden auf der Konferenz im Jahr 2023 vorgestellt.

Die Trennung von Weizen- und Erbsenmischungen wurde mit praxisüblicher Technik untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass der Trennungsaufwand nicht überschätzt werden sollte. In vielen Fällen die Vorreinigung aus, um den Fremdbesatz im Weizen unter den Standardgrenzwerten zu halten.

Field trials in organic and conventional revealed, that yield stability in commercial cultivars is negatively correlated with yield, and that the stability of protein content in the grain of heterogeneous wheat populations is higher than that of inbred lines with a comparable yield.

Feldversuche mit ökologisch und konventionell gezüchteten Weizensorten zeigten, dass die Kornproteinabweichung (GPD) von ökologisch gezüchteten Weizensorten höher war als die von konventionell gezüchteten Sorten. Die GPD von heterogenen Populationen unterschied sich nicht von der von Inzuchtlinien.

In einem einjährigen Versuch wurden tote Mulche auf Kohlrabi ausgebracht und die Blattschäden durch Raupen von Pieris spp. untersucht. Erste Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Mulche die Blattschäden durch die Raupen um mehr als 87 % reduzierten.

Mulchen reduziert das Vorkommen des Kartoffelkäfers. Individuen wurden zwischen gemulchten und ungemulchten Parzellen freigesetzt. L. decemlineata wählte für den Erstbefall ungemulchte Parzellen. Ein Barrierereffekt, olfaktorische Irritation oder eine Störung der Orientierung könnten der Grund sein.

BAKWERT war konzeptionell auf die Stärkung der gesamten ökologischen Wertschöpfungskette und die Verbreitung von Innovationen zur ökologischen Intensivierung der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion ausgerichtet. Am Beispiel heterogener Weizenpopulationen wurde eine gemeinsame Dynamik der Innovation in Landwirtschaft, Verarbeitung und Vermarktung hergestellt. Das Gesamtziel von BAKWERT war es, zur Weiterentwicklung und Verbreitung des innovativen agrarökologischen Züchtungsansatzes heterogener Populationen beizutragen. Erstes Arbeitsziel war die Etablierung und Organisation von drei regionalen ökologischen Wertschöpfungsketten für den Anbau, die Verarbeitung und Vermarktung heterogener Weizenpopulationen. Diese regionalen Wertschöpfungsketten mit insgesamt 10 Landwirtschafts-, 3 Mühlen- und 14 Bäckereibetrieben wurden kontinuierlich mit Ergebnissen aus den Analysen versorgt, um laufend Anpassungen und Verbesserungen zu ermöglichen und die Optimierung von Prozessen und Produkten sicherzustellen. Hauptaugenmerk lag auf der Identifizierung von Anpassungsbedarfen beim Anbau bzw. der Verarbeitung von heterogenem Weizen. Hierzu wurden die Praxisprozesse eng begleitet und die Erfahrungen dokumentiert. Die laufenden Datenerhebungen und Analysen (Feldbonituren, Ernteanalysen, Mahl- und Backtests, etc.) wurden ergänzt durch strukturierte qualitative Datenerhebungen (Interviews, Gruppendiskussionen, etc.). Erträge und Qualitäten der zwei untersuchten Populationen waren vergleichbar mit der Liniensorte ‚Aristaro‘. Insbesondere bei der Backqualität wies das heterogene Material dabei eine höhere Stabilität auf. Im BAKWERT-Projekt hat sich gezeigt, dass heterogene Populationen auch in der Praxis eine erfolgreiche Strategie für ökologische Qualitätsweizenerzeugung im Klimawandel sind. Der Populationsweizen kann ohne Schwierigkeiten oder Anpassungsbedarf in den regulären Warenfluss der Mühlen und Bäckereien integriert werden.
