Introduction: Streptococcus agalactiae, a species of β-haemolytic streptococcus belonging to Lancefield’s group B (GBS), is known as a common infecting agent transmitted to infants during childbirth, causing sepsis, meningitis, or both, with a high incidence of mortality. Following the observation of a great variability between regional laboratories both in the methodology and in the results of tests for the detection of GBS in pregnancy, with high percentages of false negative results, in 2010 the Department for Health Policies of Piedmont, Italian region, issued specific recommendations for adhere to international guidelines. Our aim was to assess whether the impact of the publication of the recommendations has been lasting over time. Methods: We analyzed the regional birth certificate register from 2006 to 2018, to evaluate the annual number of deliveries, the number of Streptococcus agalactiae tests in pregnancy and the percentage of positive culture results. We also evaluated the consistency of the percentage of positive tests with the expectations based on the guidelines and compared the two time periods before and after introduction of regional recommendations using a multivariate regression model. Results: The mean proportion of women tested for GBS vaginal-rectal swabs during pregnancy increased from 83.5% in 2006 to 90.7% in 2018 with the biggest rise in 2010, the t-test for the comparison of the two means was statistically significant (p < .001). The mean positivity rate increased from 12.7% to 19.2%, with a rise in 2010, with a significant t-test (p < .001). Conclusion: The results suggested a significant impact of the recommendations on the compliance and results regarding the carrying out and culture of vagino-rectal swabs for GBS, with better appropriateness of peripartum antibiotic therapy and possible reduction of GBS related neonatal sepsis. Purpose: This review aims to investigate the role of midwifery care in perinatal death. Specifically, it aims to investigate the type and implications in the clinical practice of psychological and psychiatric support interventions for women/couples., Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA methodology. For this purpose, the following databases were queried: PubMed, APA PsycInfo, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, and ERIC, considering only studies published in the 2002-2022 time frame., Results: 14 studies were found to be eligible by the literature review. These researches were divided into 3 macro-topics representing the most crucial factors in influencing the quality of care: the healthcare setting, the experience and training of caregivers, and the experience of parents., Discussion: The healthcare figure who experiences such a tragic event most closely is the midwife. The health and geographic context in which care is provided - understood to be low-medium-high resources - have a fundamental impact on the quality of midwifery care and caregiver satisfaction. The training was found to be incomplete, and midwives' experiences revealed how they felt unprepared. Parents' experiences indicate the need for multidisciplinary care, better communicability, and follow-up including psychological/psychiatric support for mothers who are increasingly alone in coping with bereavement. To date, there are no guidelines for psychological support for this specific event in the literature., Conclusions: Birth-death management should be a structured part of professional courses so that new generations of midwives can improve the quality of care for affected families. Future research should focus on how to improve communication processes, and hospital centers should adopt protocols adapted to the needs of parents, including a midwifery-led model policy based on psychological support for the mothers/couples involved, as well as increase follow-ups.

Early skin-to-skin contact (SSC) after birth is a physiological practice that is internationally recommended and has well-documented importance for the baby and for the mother. This study aims to examine SSC with a cohort of mothers or fathers in the operating room after a Cesarean section (C-section) and its relationship with duration of breastfeeding. From January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012, at the Castelli Hospital in Verbania, Italy, a Baby Friendly designated hospital, 252 consecutive women who had a C-section were enrolled in the study and followed for 6 months. The sample was later divided into three groups depending on the real outcomes in the operating room: SSC with the mother (57.5%), SSC with the father (17.5%), and no SSC (25%). Our study showed a statistical association between skin-to-skin contact with the mother and the exclusive breastfeeding rates on discharge. This effect is maintained and statistically significant at three and six months, as compared to the groups that had paternal SSC or no SSC. After a C-section, skin-to-skin contact with the mother can be an important practice for support, promotion, and duration of breastfeeding.

The Cri du Chat syndrome (CdC) is a rare genetic disorder caused by variable size deletions of the short arm of chromosome 5 (5p-). It is well known that home-reared patients show better performances as compared to institutionalised cases, and it was reported that continuous educational intervention can ameliorate their performances. To assess the efficacy of educational intervention and to develop new CdC oriented programs of rehabilitation, we compare the results obtained for many developmental skills in two groups of CdC patients undergoing two different rehabilitation programs. Using data on the development of a group of CdC patients obtained by validated Italian translation for the Denver Developmental Screening Test II, we compared a group of 13 patients undergoing an educational program developed for CdC patients, the Mayer Project (MP), with a second group of 15 cases in whom caring was not specifically oriented. A positive impact of the MP was reported by parents, observing an improvement in social skills obtained, even if no significant differences were observed when the items of the Denver Test are studied.
