Move analysis is a text analytical approach first developed by John Swales (1981) to investigate the underlying generic structure of research articles (RAs) in terms of moves-and-steps for pedagogical purposes. A widely shared aspiration of move analysts has been to identify the linguistic features characterizing the various RA moves not only in English, but also across languages. One shortcoming blocking this advancement is the lack of multilingual corpora fully annotated for their specific communicative functions in a coordinated and reliable manner. In this paper, we describe and discuss a methodology for analysing the various RA sections for their generic structure up from the step level in two languages and across a wide range of disciplines, using the discussion section as a test case for illustrating that methodology. Among the topics treated are establishing criteria for choosing a suitable sample of comparable RA discussions across the two languages, designing a model for annotating the section’s moves and steps, creating an accessible computer-assisted coding scheme, achieving good levels of inter-rater reliability, and obtaining validation from expert informants and writers. In essence, this is a methodology paper offered as a working model for other EAP researchers undertaking similar analyses in future.

En el presente trabajo trata de analizar detalladamente los entresijos del sistema electoral de los Estados Unidos, así como lo ocurrido en el marco histórico electoral y lo acontecido en las elecciones del presente año. En lo que sigue, se hace hincapié en tres puntos fundamentales en los cuales se apoya el trabajo. En primer lugar, se hace referencia al marco jurídico de la elección, analizando por separado las leyes electorales y los cambios que se han producido en las mismas a lo largo de los años, los principales poderes que componen el estado y su influencia dentro del sistema de elección presidencial, así como la separación existente entre los mismos y la efectividad de dicha separación. Asimismo, el trabajo se centra a su vez en realizar un análisis detallado del proceso de nominación presidencial explicando los diferentes procesos y factores que influyen en el mismo y la forma en que lo modifican. Además, se hace un análisis del fenómeno de la carga frontal existente en el calendario de primarias del país y de los casos particulares de los comicios que se celebran con más antelación. Finalmente, se realiza un análisis del llamado colegio electoral donde se define y se perfilan sus características principales además de hacer un estudio de la evolución histórica del colegio electoral desde sus orígenes y, a su vez, se da una visión de las diferentes elecciones del colegio electoral a lo largo de la historia prestando especial atención a lo ocurrido en el proceso electoral durante la segunda guerra mundial y al colegio electoral del año 2000 que enfrentó a Al Gore y al finalmente presidente George W. Bush y que fue el más polémico que se recuerda hasta la fecha

El propósito de este artículo es abordar el estudio de la traducción en el proceso de afianzamiento de una lengua vulgar en estado de gestación: la lengua inglesa, dentro de un contexto cultural trilingüe, en el que convivían el latín, el francés y el inglés, en un período histórico concreto, los siglos XI al XIV, que abarcan desde la Conquista Normanda al nacimiento de Chaucer. Comenzaremos refiriéndonos brevemente a la conquista y a sus consecuencias.

After a brief revision of the major currents of thought and grammatical models in the history of CS (Contrastive Studies), a method of analysis suitable for corpus-based descrip-tive studies across languages is presented and discussed in this paper. As an alternative to translation corpora, the use of comparable corpora is advocated and put into practice in a large-scale research on a particular semantic function, quantification, and its expres-sion in two languages, English and Spanish. The different phases of the process are explained and a summary of achievements is provided. The ultimate purpose of the paper is to contribute to the strengthening of the discipline by offering new results about one pair of languages and by suggesting a methodology that can be broadly applied to different semantic fields and pairs of languages.

The present paper reports on a translation-based teaching-oriented study of the expression of path and manner of motion (Talmy 1972) in English and Spanish. The aim is to explore contrastive differences by analysing transla-tions, with special attention to crossed transposition (Molina and Hurtado Albir 2002), which implies a double shift of part-of-speech from the source text to the target text, and is the expected type of transfer between a satel-lite-framed language like English and a verb-framed language like Spanish. Two corpora have been used, a monolingual corpus of Children’s Short Sto-ries, the CSS-corpus, and a parallel corpus English-Spanish, P-ACTRES 2.0. The results show a high tendency for implicitation of either path or manner and for compression in the translations into Spanish, whereas crossed trans-position is preferred in the translations into English. Also, some pedagogical applications are suggested for including these motion expressions in TEFL to young learners through storytelling.

El objetivo de esta comunicación es abordar el tema de la naturaleza de la traducción (si ésta es ciencia, arte, oficio ... ), analizar la evolución histórica de las actitudes que se han mantenido ante su actividad y su investigación, basadas en distintas visiones respecto a dicha naturaleza y detectar cuáles son las consecuencias de estas concepciones diferentes a la hora de esta­blecer un marco teórico, un objeto, un objetivo y una metodología ade­cuados para los Estudios de Traducción. Nos centraremos especialmente en tres dicotomías interrelacionadas: ciencia frente a método científico, traducción como proceso frente a traducción como producto y actividad traductora frente a Estudios de Traducción.

En el presente trabajo trata de analizar detalladamente los entresijos del sistema electoral de los Estados Unidos, así como lo ocurrido en el marco histórico electoral y lo acontecido en las elecciones del presente año. En este trabajo vamos a tratar de las cadenas modificadoras de sustantivos en las que al menos un elemento sea un adjetivo. Además, sólo trataremos de la modificación en posición atributiva, es decir, sin la mediación de ningún verbo copulativo. Para ello hemos recurrido a ejemplos extraídos de dos grandes corpus monolingües, el Cobuild para el inglés y el CREA (Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual) para el español. Comparando las distintas opciones encontradas en las dos lenguas en el análisis de un número suficientemente representativo de ejemplos de un adjetivo, podremos determinar cuáles son las pautas de uso de los hablantes nativos ingleses y españoles a la hora de emplear estos recursos. Estos datos pueden servir para determinar qué opciones se presentan a un traductor a la hora de trasvasar un texto del inglés al español en el que estén presentes cadenas de recursos modificadores de sustantivos.

Actualmente existen multitud de corrientes culturales, estéticas, literarias, sociológicas, lingüísticas, feministas, y de muchos otros tipos, que se acercan de algún modo al estudio del fenómeno de la traducción. En las últimas décadas, el interés por este aspecto de nuestro entorno ha crecido a la par que su importancia en nuestras vidas. que están constantemente rodeadas de algún proceso traductor. En este trabajo nos acercaremos brevemente a las nociones de traducción y a los fundamentos teóricos al respecto desarrollados por tres autores contemporáneos que han tenido y tienen una extraordinaria importancia en este campo: Theo Hermans, Mary Snell-­Hornby y Gideon Toury.

El tema escogido, "Orígenes de la Traducción Científica: La Casa de la Sabiduría", pertenece a la disciplina de la Historia de la Traducción, básica en la formación de todo traductor. En el siglo IX, el califa abásida al-Mamun fundó en Bagdad La Casa de la Sabiduría, un centro de estudios que incluía una Escuela de Traductores. Con el Islam, los pueblos árabes, nómadas y desconocedores de la escritura, comenzaron a desarrollarse culturalmente a una gran velocidad. Este florecimiento se debió a varios factores favorables: la utilización del papel, el apoyo abásida, las escuelas nestorianas, la invención de un siste­ma gráfico para el árabe, y especialmente la labor traductora de La Casa de la Sabiduría, donde en dos siglos se tradujeron todas las obras científicas griegas al árabe. Hunayn ibn Ishaq es la figura más destacada de esta Escuela de Traductores de Bagdad, como médico, traductor, y maestro de traductores.

The University of León has been engaged for several years now in a wide-reaching project on corpus-driven Contrastive Analysis (henceforth CA) involving two languages: English and Spanish. There are several communicative areas on which contrastive work is currently being done. These areas are chosen among those semantic functions whose representation in English grammar is particularly conflictive when translating into Spanish. The project is aimed at the setting up of manuals and other resources dealing with English-Spanish contrastive studies focused on corpus-driven data. The possible applicability of this project are mainly directed towards the improvement of Translator Training and Translation Practice, as well as to the development of Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) in Spain. Due to the non-existence of a sufficiently representative English-Spanish translation corpus, the research project is based on two monolingual corpora: Cobuild/Bank of English and the Spanish CREA (Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual). Both are corpora of the general language in use, and they provide essential information for the development of our project. The present paper will deal with how the planning for this particular project on characterisation in English and Spanish is designed and set up. There are several stages that must always be fulfilled in all the areas the study is going to cover. This is a proposal of the outline the final project will have.

Los avances informáticos que se han venido produciendo en las últimas décadas, y especialmente en los últimos años, han desarrollado materiales y herramientas de diversos tipos que pueden ser extremadamente útiles para los investigadores en todos los campos lingüísticos, así como para la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras. Una de estas herramientas, de la que hablaremos a continuación, son los corpus lingüísticos informatizados.

This paper explores the translations of the English discourse particle oh into Spanish. Discourse particles are particularly problematic in translation because of their multi-functionality, their high degree of grammaticalization, and their strong culturebound character. The interjection oh is one frequent discourse marker in English spoken discourse, conveying text-organising and interpersonal functions. This study will focus on the translations of oh in the 2.5 million-word English-Spanish parallel corpus PACTRES. The aim is to provide an inventory of translation solutions in Spanish for the various functions of oh in English texts

Los estudios de contraste entre dos lenguas están experimentando un gran auge en la actualidad gracias a las herramientas informáticas aplicables a corpus lingüísticos informatizados. Las concordancias que se pueden extraer de estos corpus permiten estudiar con detalle las relaciones entre unidades léxicas concretas y las estructuras sintácticas en las que aparecen o que las acompañan. Este trabajo se centra en la descripción de las distintas estructuras caracterizadoras que pueden acompañar a los sustantivos en inglés y español, entendiendo por caracterización la modificación cualitativa de un elemento lingüístico. Para ello, este estudio analiza concordancias extraídas del corpus inglés Cobuild/Bank of English y del CREA (Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual). Proponiendo una direccionalidad inglés-español, el contraste de los resultados nos permitirá establecer pautas de uso y frecuencia muy útiles en el campo de la traducción del inglés al español.

Los avances informáticos que se han venido produciendo en las últimas décadas, y especialmente en los últimos años, han desarrollado materiales y herramientas de diversos tipos que son de gran utilidad para los investigadores en todos los campos lingüísticos, entre otros, el de los estudios de contraste de lenguas, y el de la traducción. Las herramientas informáticas desarrolladas para uso específico de traductores son muchas y muy variadas, como por ejemplo las múltiples opciones de los procesadores de textos más potentes, los diccionarios electrónicos (en CD-ROM o en la red Internet), las bases de datos terminológicas, los corpus lingüísticos, y las más modernas memorias de traducción. En este trabajo trataremos de una de estas herramientas, los corpus lingüísticos informatizados, en función de su utilidad en el campo de la traducción, ya sea en su aspecto teórico, en la aplicación práctica, o en la didáctica de la traducción.

Desde el comienzo de uso del término realismo en la literatura, éste se ha asociado con la producción aparecida en Latinoamérica, sobre todo, debido a que las obras más señeras del movimiento se concentran en esa área geográfica, a pesar de que el origen se sitúa en Europa. La situación socioeconómica y política de los países latinoamericanos provoca que el realismo mágico haya sido utilizado como elemento de subversión, de desahogo intelectual. Mientras la fórmula se agota en Hispanoamérica en las últimas décadas, en Estados Unidos surgía la necesidad de contemplarla, rechazando las afirmaciones sobre la inutilidad de realismo mágico recuperándolo como categoría de análisis para determinadas producciones surgidas en Estados Unidos

This paper presents a corpus-based analysis of online cheese descriptions in English. These texts follow specific conventions which make them recognizable as belonging to a particular subgenre. In this study we will follow Swales’ move-step method to establish the rhetorical structure, and a subsequent lexico-grammatical analysis will provide relevant information such as common phraseological and lexical suggestions for each move and step. The final aim of the study is to produce a writing tool for Spanish-speaking professionals in the dairy industry to assist them in the production of this specific text type.

This paper is part of the ACTRES project on contrastive linguistics University of León(Spain), which attempts to establish fuctional-semantic equivalents in English and Spanish in a number of problematic areas. This paper deals with verbal characterisation in English and Spanish and the different semantic functions associated to the syntactic realizations of these fuctions. This is a particularly problematic semantic area in an English-Spanish contrast, and leads to negative interference in translation.In both languages there is a wide range of syntactic means available for characterising verbs, and the meanings may relate to time, place, manner, purpose, etc. This apparent complexity, however, conceals subtle associations between particular meanings and che most fequently used syntactic form to actualise those meanings (Bondarko 1991). Authentic language data corresponding to two sample verbs, make and hacer, have been extracted from monolingual corpora to reveal these associations.

Las oraciones de relativo son un recurso sintáctico empleado tanto por el inglés como por el español para la caracterización de sustantivos. Este trabajo se centra en el estudio de las diferentes posibilidades combinatorias de este recurso con otras construcciones caracterizadoras. La base de este estudio es el análisis descriptivo de 500 concordancias de oraciones de relativo del corpus Cobuild en inglés (who, which, that) y 500 del CREA (Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual) en español (que) para observar sus características combinatorias en ambas lenguas. Existen varios criterios distintos que determinan el orden y la combinación de estas estructuras: "Among the factors determining the ordering of postmodifiers in cases of multiple postmodification we can distinguish - but not exhaustively - factors that have to do with noun phrase structure, with the gramatical class of the postmodifiers involved and with the semantics of the noun phrase." (Oostdijk and Aarts 1994: 120). Una vez realizado el análisis de forma independiente en inglés y español, se yuxtaponen los resultados para proponer pautas contrastivas útiles en la enseñanza de lenguas y en la traducción entre estas dos lenguas.

Dentro de la lingüística aplicada, el análisis contrastivo (en adelante AC) surgió a mediados del siglo XX con un claro propósito de desarrollar y mejorar la enseñanza de lenguas en general. A pesar de que con el tiempo se han ido diseñando nuevas aplicaciones a los resultados obtenidos de un análisis contrastivo, como por ejemplo, en la traducción o en la lingüística descriptiva, los usos pedagógicos siguen siendo los predominantes incluso hoy en día. En este trabajo nos proponemos revisar los distintos niveles en los que se puede desarrollar un análisis contrastivo inglés-español, las fases de las que debe constar, y finalmente nos centraremos en sus aplicaciones prácticas en el campo de la enseñanza de lenguas.

For the past few years, the Department of Modern Languages at the University of León (Spain) has been offering a course on English-Spanish Contrastive Linguistics focusing on explicit instruction in L1-L2 differences. The directionality is from English into Spanish, since our students are native speakers of Spanish enrolled in an English degree. This has proved to be helpful in raising learners' awareness of the one-to-many relationships between meaning and form across language boundaries and also in improving their translation performance. The course makes use of a corpus-based methodology to develop a number of tasks oriented towards highlighting the grammatical areas that are particularly problematic from an English-Spanish perspective and may cause difficulties in the improvement of the translation skills of our students. After a short theoretical introduction to the field of Contrastive Linguistics, a top-down functional approach is employed to deal with textual contrasts and contrasts at various lexico-grammatical levels. The main purposes of this ‘contrast-through-translation’ course are to offer students the opportunity a) to explore the semantic and pragmatic cross-linguistic relationships between English and Spanish at different levels of analysis, and b) to improve both their understanding of the source language (English) and their accuracy in the production of the target language (Spanish).

En este trabajo nos proponemos describir los entresijos de la lingüística contrastiva, y sus relaciones a distintos niveles con la traducción. Emplearemos el término análisis contrastivo como sinónimo de lingüística contrastiva, siguiendo la terminología imperante en lengua inglesa: contrastive analysis. El análisis contrastivo es una disciplina relativamente reciente, pero que se ha ido desarrollando a pasos agigantados, especialmente en los últimos tiempos. Aunque la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras sigue siendo una de las aplicaciones básicas de los resultados de un estudio contrastivo, su posible utilidad en el campo de la traducción es innegable. Además, el uso de corpus informatizados en los años 80 y 90 ha dado un giro completamente nuevo a esta disciplina, y gracias a estas nuevas herramientas informáticas, las aplicaciones de la lingüística contrastiva en traducción se han ido multiplicando y perfeccionando en gran medida.

The relationship between contrastive linguistics (CL) and translation studies (TS) as two disciplines within the field of applied linguistics has been explored in depth by several authors, especially in the 1970s and early 1980s. From the mid-nineties on both these disciplines have experienced a great boom due to the use of computerised language corpora in linguistic analy-sis. We will argue in this paper that this new corpus-based approach to CL and TS makes it necessary to revise the relationship between them, and look for a new common ground to work on. Our hypothesis is that the use of translation equivalence as a tertium comparationis for a corpus-based con-trastive analysis provides essential data for TS in a wide range of aspects. On the other hand, the corpus approach of TS has shed a new light on numerous aspects of CL.

Podríamos calificar la actitud de Unamuno hacia la literatura inglesa del siglo XIX como misteriosa. Adjetivo que, por otra parte, también describe los aspectos básicos de su sentido trágico de la vida. Y en sentido trágico de la vida es uno de los muchos testimonios que el hombre, en su humanismo del siglo XX ha adquirido, con un concepto renovado del yo en el universo.

Las lenguas existen para que podamos llevar a cabo el proceso de la comunicación. Si la lengua tiende a la economía lingüística, es de esperar que cada vez que decidimos emitir un mensaje, éste tenga cierta relevancia. Como dicen Sperber y Wilson, "Human cognitive processes, we argue, are geared to achieving the greatest possible cognitive effect for the smallest possible processing effort. " (Sperber & Wilson 1995: vii). Por ello, cada vez que queremos comunicar algo, hacer llegar un mensaje a un interlocutor, estamos diciendo algo sobre alguna cosa, es decir, en cierto modo estamos caracterizando. Esta manera de ver la caracterización es lo que llamamos la visión amplia del término. Es importante precisar qué es lo que se entiende por caracterización.

Librarianship and Information Science belong to a group of degrees that have developed independently only in recent times. Due to the global network of information spread all over the world and the increasing demand for huge amounts of data for all kinds of intellectual activities, the importance of a good command of the English language for the students of these degrees is self-evident. The relatively short independent life of these sciences is the main reason for the non-existence of specific textbooks joining the always necessary review of the English grammar, with the vocabulary needs, text practice, cataloguing methods and specific reading and writing activities the students of these subjects require. The present paper will deal with numerous different possibilities for exercises the English teacher may propose in a class of first year students in Librarianship and Information Science, all of them based on my personal experience.

In the past few decades there has been an increasing interest in cross-linguistic studies, especially with the new developments made available by computerised corpora. Moreover, contrastive studies have recently moved into new areas of research, such as pragmatics and discourse analysis, and a growing number of studies focus on spoken communication and units such as pragmatic or discourse markers, which are particularly common in speech.

Assessing translation quality is generally seen as a difficult task because of the inadequacy of the tools available. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of a corpus-based contrastive methodology (ACTRES2 Project) developed at the University of León (Spain) for identifying instances of low-quality rendering of grammatical features when translating from English into Spanish using translation universals. The analysis provides information about: i) the resources available (or absence thereof) in each of the languages to express a given meaning and their relative centrality; ii) the solutions favored by translators to bridge the cross-linguistic disparities and/or gaps; iii) the erroneous or non-existent uses and structures transferred from the source language into the target language. These results can be systematized in terms of simplification, interference, or unique grammatical features. Additional areas that can benefit from this type of research are translation practice, translator training and foreign language teaching (FLT), among others.

Traditionally -ly adverbs in English have been associated to the expression of manner, but this suffix is also attached to lexical items that actualise a wide range of other meanings. In Spanish, the formal equivalents of -ly adverbs are adverbs ending in -mente. However, these differ from their English counterparts in various aspects, such as frequency of occurrence and pragmatic use. An English-Spanish parallel corpus of contemporary written texts (ACTRES Project corpus) will be used to identify the different translation possibilities adopted to transfer the semantic functions that may be conveyed by -ly adverbs. The aim is to establish an inventory of translation solutions and unveil possible regularities between formal resource(s) and meaning function(s) in these translated uses.

Modality is a broad and fuzzy area and modal meanings are mapped in quite different ways cross-linguistically. This paper is an attempt to describe the expression of epistemic modality in English and Spanish by focusing on the most commonly employed epistemic adverbs in these languages: probably and its cognate probablemente. This paper reports on a corpus-based contrastive study of these adverbs, which analyses issues related to their syntactic function, placement, and the co-occurrence of these adverbs with other modal markers, mainly modal verbs in English and tense, mood and lexical verbs in Spanish. Empirical data are extracted from two large monolingual corpora of contemporary English and Spanish, Cobuild/Bank of English and CREA (Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual), in order to carry out the analysis on authentic instances of language in use. The results not only provide a description of the use of the two adverbs, but also a general picture of the different grammatical resources associated to the expression of epistemic modality in English and Spanish. The future applications of the results lie in areas related to interlinguistic communication involving the two working languages, in particular in foreign language teaching and translation

This paper sets out to explore the possibilities of designing an effective and efficient tool to contribute to the assessment of translations by using a limited number of language-pair-bound descriptive anchor phenomena, more specifically grammatical, not lexical anchor phenomena. Our proposal applies to narrative texts, although the working hypothesis is that the procedure is useful for any text type provided the data are relevant and appropriate for other textual varieties.

In this paper I will provide a detailed analysis of some of the most frequent adjectives in English and Spanish, with reference in particular to their position in the noun phrase. The working hypothesis is that there will be a strong trend to locate adjectives in Spanish translations in pre-modifying positions more often than if these same adjectives occurred in original Spanish texts. The empirical material used for this analysis will be extracted from the English-Spanish parallel corpus known as P-ACTRES compiled at the University of León, Spain. This corpus contains 2.5 million words of contemporary English texts and their corresponding Spanish translations. A variety of registers are represented: fiction, non-fiction, press, etc. The CREA (Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual), a large reference corpus of Spanish, will be used for the comparison with original Spanish texts.

En el presente artículo presentamos una propuesta de estudio descriptivo de los usos y funciones de una serie representativa de partitivos ingleses como ejemplo de una aplicación práctica de la lingüística de corpus que tiene como fin último repercutir de forma positiva en la enseñanza del inglés como segunda lengua y en el ámbito de la traducción.
