This publication's objective is to serve as the documentation of a graduate student symposium with the same name held in July 2017. The goal of the symposium was to discuss problems in current film culture with a focus on filmic heritage and innovative projects in the field of film education. Think Film! is a compilation of most of the talks given at the symposium. As quite often conferences or workshops are not documented, the goal of the publication is on the one hand to preserve the results for other scholars, as well as to make them accessible for the general public, and on the other hand to give the panelists a designated space to present their research. Activities at A-festivals such as Cannes show how much influence festivals have on the exploitation chain of films. A festival premiere promises to generate buzz through the attendance of the press and sales to distributors; this is followed by further festival screenings, a distribution strategy, and theatrical release. This article looks at the circulation of films through the festival network and uses approaches from film festival research and media industry studies, which favor the term circulation over distribution, to suggest that we use the concept of «circulation power». These considerations are supported by initial results from the empirical research project «Film Circulation in the International Festival Network»., Aktivitäten bei A-Festivals wie Cannes zeigen, wie stark inzwischen der Einfluss von Festivals auf die Auswertungskette von Filmen ist. Eine Festivalpremiere verspricht Aufmerksamkeit durch Presse und Verkäufe an Verleiher_innen; es folgen weitere Festivalteilnahmen, abgestimmte Verleihstrategien und Kinostarts. Dieser Beitrag betrachtet die Zirkulation von Filmen durch das Festivalnetzwerk und bezieht sich dabei auf Ansätze aus Filmfestivalforschung sowie Media Industries Studies, die den Begriff Zirkulation gegenüber dem der Distribution favorisieren, und schlägt vor, das Konzept der «Zirkulationskraft» nutzbar zu machen. Gestützt werden diese Überlegungen durch erste Ergebnisse aus dem empirischen Forschungsprojekt «Filmzirkulation im internationalen Festivalnetzwerk».

Festivals are nowadays a cultural, social, and economic force to be reckoned with. This study will offer an overview of the Dutch festival landscape, which has been lacking. There are commercial initiatives that target only a portion of the festival sector, and there are specific branch organisations or cultural funds that only cover the data of their members, for instance the Netherlands Film Fund reports on ten major Dutch film festivals in their annual Film Facts & Figures of the Netherlands. National institutes such as Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and The Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP) also lack substantial data on Dutch festivals.

Filmfestivals spielen eine entscheidende Rolle in den Prozessen von Produktion, Distribution, Zirkulation und Rezeption von Filmen und sind dabei mit zahlreichen (Macht-)Interessen konfrontiert. Ausgehend von dieser Annahme fragt der Beitrag am Beispiel der Internationalen Filmfestspiele Berlin, wie unterschiedliche Akteure die Zielsetzungen großer Filmfestivals strukturieren und deren Handeln in eine bestimmte Richtung lenken. Gestützt auf Schimanks Ansatz der Akteur- Struktur-Dynamiken werden dafür die Deutungs-, Erwartungs- und Konstellationsstrukturen untersucht, welche die öffentliche Debatte über die Zukunft von Deutschlands A-Filmfestival im Winter 2017/18 zutage gefördert hat. Die Dokumentenanalyse kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass zur künftigen Gestaltung der Berlinale zwar Aushandlungen von Zielsetzungen (das Festival als Ort der Filmkunst, aber auch als Marktplatz und internationale Handelsmesse, Informations- und Innovationsbörse, Imageträger für den Medienstandort und Impulsgeber für die Filmwirtschaft) stattfinden, die Politik aber die Handlungsspielräume der übrigen Akteure bestimmt. Zu den Verlierern zählen dabei die nach künstlerischer Autonomie strebenden Filmemacher*innen, deren Lobby kaum Gehör findet., This paper is based on the assumption that film festivals play a crucial role in the production, distribution, circulation, and reception processes of movies, but are simultaneously confronted with numerous (power) interests. Using the example of the Berlin International Film Festival the study asks how different agents determine the objectives of major film festivals and push them in a specific direction. Therefore, based on Schimank’s agent-structure dynamics, the paper explores the orientation, expectation, and constellation patterns, which came to light during the debate about the future of Germany’s major competitive film festival in winter 2017/18. The document analysis reveals that different objectives of the Berlinale are negotiated (the festival as a place of film art, market and international trade fair, information and innovation platform, media location, and stimulus for the film industry). However, policy decisions limit the freedom of all agents. Particularly filmmakers striving for artistic autonomy hardly gain a hearing.

Die Dissertation untersucht die Entwicklung des Gesamtkunstwerk-Konzeptes und seine Aktualität, Möglichkeit und Notwendigkeit in Bezug auf ein modernes filmisches Gesamtkunstwerk. Ausgegangen wird von der ästhetischen Theorie und Praxis der deutschen Frühromantik, in der das Konzept wurzelt. In einer umfassenden Betrachtung und Analyse der ästhetischen und gesellschaftspolitischen Dimension des Konzeptes in den Schriften und dem Werk Richard Wagners sollen wesentliche Strukturmerkmale erkundet und soll ein Maßstab für ein ‚positives‘ zeit-genössisches Gesamtkunstwerk gebildet werden, das sich von seinem ideologischen Missbrauch befreit. Erforscht wird, inwiefern der Farb- und Tonspielfilm ein geeignetes Kunstmedium für die Anwendung des Konzeptes darstellt und wie sich die Frage seiner gesellschaftspolitischen Dimension in der globalen Epoche übersetzen lässt., The dissertation explores the evolution of the concept of the Total Work of Art (ʹGesamtkunstwerkʹ) as well as its actuality, feasibility and necessity in the form of a modern cinematic Gesamtkunstwerk. Starting point is the aesthetic theory and praxis of the Early German Romanticism, in which the concept is rooted. An extensive consideration and analysis of the concept in both its aesthetic and socio-political dimension as developed in the writings and works of Richard Wagner aims to define its essential structural features and to set the standard for a ʹpositiveʹ contemporary Gesamtkunstwerk beyond its ideological abuse. Key is the examination of how and to what extend the sound and colour feature film constitutes a legit artistic medium for the application of the concept as well as how its sociopolitical facet translates within the global era.

Denna uppsats har som mål att undersöka begreppet kvalitetsfilm och dess användning med utgångspunkt i marknadsföringskanalerna public relations, marketing management och filmfestivaler i Sverige. Uppsatsen definierar marknadsföring och beskriver hur den kan praktiseras i filmindustrin. Begreppsanalysen av kvalitetsfilm refererar till Pierre Bourdieus sociologiska texter och har en kort historisk genomgång av hur begreppet kvalitetsfilm myntades i Sverige. Sedan följer en genomgång av kvalitetsfilm i förhållande till europeisk konstfilm samt hur begreppet influerat den svenska filmbranschen idag. Uppsatsen innehåller analyser utifrån tre kvalitativa intervjuer med anställda som i någon form arbetar med kvalitetsfilm, samt litteratur kring marknadsföring av film och kvalitetsbedömning. This study aims to examine the concept of quality film and its use on the marketing channels public relations, marketing management and film festivals in Sweden. The study also defines marketing and describes how it can be practiced in the film industry. The conceptual analysis of quality film refers to Pierre Bourdieu's sociological texts and have a brief historical review of how the concept of quality film was coined in Sweden. Then follows a review of quality films in relation to European art films, and how the concept has influenced the Swedish film industry today. The thesis contains analyzes based on three exclusive interviews with quality film workers, and literature on film marketing and estimation of quality.

Denna studie behandlar queerfilmfestivaler och queerfilmprojekt i Stockholm. Utifrån fem aktörers perspektiv undersöks villkoren för att arbeta med queerfilm samt vad det innebär att å ena sidan förhålla sig till en community och å andra sidan verka inom en institutionell miljö. Studien utgår ifrån en tidigare forskning av Joshua Gamson som berör hur kollektiva identiteter formas genom organisationer. Som stöd använder studien sig av nyinstitutionell teori, Anthony Giddens resonemang om individen och livsstilar samt Pierre Bourdieus begrepp fält och kapital. Studien går igenom den sociala rörelsens utveckling samt framkomsten av queerfilmfestivaler och visar hur aktörerna förhåller sig utefter dessa premisser. Slutligen landar studien i att aktörerna positionerar sig olika utefter sin placering på det sociala kontra det konstnärliga fältet. De institutionella ramarna präglar i högre grad formandet av identiteter i organisationer med lös förankring inom det sociala fältet. En stor drivkraft för aktörerna har varit att bredda porträtteringen av queerpersoner i film. Behovet för en mer nyanserad identitetsporträttering bekräftas och medvetandegörs genom dem. Den ömsesidiga påverkan som äger rum mellan aktörerna och deras communities syns bland annat i programmeringen av queerfilmfestivaler.

Dieser Vortrag befasst sich mit den gegenwärtigen Umbrüchen der Filmkultur , die sich durch das kennzeichnet, was man als “flüchtigen Überfluss” bezeichnen könnte. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie kleinere Filme neue Vertriebswege finden und damit auch neue Publikumsgruppen erreichen. Der Zugang zu Filmen über das Internet verändert unsere Sehgewohnheiten. Vormals unauffindbare Raritäten sind plötzlich frei verfügbar, unbekannte Schätze des Zelluloid-Zeitalters und Filme aus anderen Kulturkreisen sind nur noch einen Mausklick weit entfernt. Die neue Kultur des weitgehend freien Zugangs geht einher mit einem Übergang von dem traditionellen Modus des Filmbesuchs im Kollektiv hin zu indiviualisierten Sichtungspraktiken. Zugleich wächst die Bedeutung von Festivals in der gegenwärtigen Filmkultur. Was aber ist die Logik der Festival-Galaxie? Sind Festivals machtvolle Institutionen, die über den Erfolg oder Misserfolg von Filmen entscheiden? Sichern sie tatsächlich die Diversität der Filmkultur, wie sie selbst behaupten, oder schotten sie vielmehr die kleineren Filme vom großen Publikum ab?
