Forest monitoring benefits from biophysical parameters such as Leaf Area Index (LAI), Plant Area Index (PAI) and fractional vegetation cover (FCOVER) and can be obtained from optical and LiDAR remote sensing, such as Sentinel-2 (S2) and the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI). While GEDI-derived products consider all phyto-elements, those from S2 refer to green elements only. Apart from individual accuracies, systemic deviations among products are thus expectable. However, products from S2 and GEDI lack inter-comparison. We evaluated S2 and GEDI-derived LAI, PAI and FCOVER with digital hemispherical photography observations (DHP) in a forest disturbance hotspot in Germany across various forest conditions, including vital stands, standing deadwood and clearings. We found moderate to high agreement with in-situ data, with highest accuracy for S2-derived LAI (R2 = 0.54) and GEDI-derived FCOVER (R2 = 0.73). Agreements between S2 and GEDI products were low, which we attribute to systematic influences of woody components, GEDI's limitations in sloped terrain, and saturation of optical signals in dense canopy. In conclusion, findings suggest that while GEDI is effective in dense canopies, S2 products are beneficial for monitoring forest recovery. Livestock manure management, especially related to soil-fertilisation practice, is responsible for most of the emissions in agriculture, and in particular the ammonia emissions (NH3), which play a key role in environmental problems, affecting water, soil and air quality. Within the digital agricultural framework, EO data contribute to agricultural-practices monitoring such as manure spreading, to mitigate pollutant emissions. This study presents a GIS-based tool on an open-source platform, developed for susceptibility estimation of sewage spreading occurrence in agricultural areas of Italy. The tool is based on the analysis of multispectral and hyperspectral satellite time series in synergy with field data and ancillary information collected from regional repositories, to produce a series of classified and prioritised spatially explicit information. Spectral analysis of satellite acquisitions enabled the identification of manure spreading with the precision of about 83%. Field campaigns from October to March were carried out to validate the spreading event. Some environmental critical situations such as air and water pollution, forest fires and exceptional Mediterranean cyclones are presented to highlight the importance of Earth Observation (EO) techniques for environmental protection and monitoring. Methods based on EO and the use of machine learning techniques for land, marine and air quality observations are operationally implemented by the CSA (Centro operativo di Sorveglianza Ambientale) at ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale) to provide support for environmental protection and in the event of environmental crisis or emergency. Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) retrieved from satellite spectrometers can be a highly valuable proxy for photosynthesis. The SIF signal is very small and notoriously difficult to measure, requiring sub-nanometer spectral resolution measurements, which to-date are only available from atmospheric spectrometers sampling at coarse spatial resolution. For example, the widely used SIF dataset derived from the GOME-2 mission is typically provided in 0.5 decimal degree composites. This paper presents a new SIF dataset based on GOME-2 satellite observations with an enhanced spatial resolution of 0.05 decimal degrees and an 8-day time step covering the period 2007–2018. It leverages on a proven methodology that relies on using a light use efficiency (LUE) modelling approach to establishing a semi-empirical relationship between SIF and various explanatory variables derived from remote sensing at finer spatial resolution. An optimal set of explanatory variables is selected based on an independent validation with OCO-2 SIF observations, which are only sparsely available but have a high accuracy and spatial resolution. After a bias-correction, the resulting downscaled SIF data shows high spatio-temporal agreement with the first SIF retrievals from the new TROPOMI mission, opening the path towards establishing a surrogate archive for this promising new dataset.
