1. New radio continuum study of the Large Magellanic Cloud Supernova Remnant N49

Abstract

We present new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) radio observations toward N49, one of the brightest extragalactic Supernova remnants (SNRs) located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our new and archival ATCA radio observations were analysed along with $Chandra$ X-ray data. These observations show a prominent `bullet' shaped feature beyond the southwestern boundary of the SNR. Both X-ray morphology and radio polarisation analysis support a physical connection of this feature to the SNR. The 'bullet' feature's apparent velocity is estimated at $\sim$1300 km s$^{-1}$, based on its distance ($\sim$10 pc) from the remnant's geometric centre and estimated age ($\sim$7600 yrs). we estimated the radio spectral index, $\alpha= -0.55 \pm 0.03$ which is typical of middle-age SNRs. Polarisation maps created for N49 show low to moderate levels of mean fractional polarisation estimated at 7$\pm$1% and 10$\pm$1% for 5.5 and 9 GHz, respectively. These values are noticeably larger than found in previous studies. Moreover, the mean value for the Faraday rotation of SNR N49 from combining CABB data is 212$\pm$65 rad m$^{-2}$ and the maximum value of RM is 591$\pm$103 rad m$^{-2}$., Comment: 16 pages, accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia

Abstract

We present the serendipitous discovery of a new radio-continuum ring-like object nicknamed Kyklos (J1802-3353), with MeerKAT UHF and L-band observations. The radio ring, which resembles the recently discovered odd radio circles (ORCs), has a diameter of 80 arcsec and is located just 6 deg from the Galactic plane. However, Kyklos exhibits an atypical thermal radio-continuum spectrum ({\alpha} = -0.1 +/- 0.3), which led us to explore different possible formation scenarios. We concluded that a circumstellar shell around an evolved massive star, possibly a Wolf-Rayet, is the most convincing explanation with the present data., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted in A&A

Abstract

KM3NeT/ORCA is a water Cherenkov neutrino detector under construction and anchored at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The detector is designed to study oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos and determine the neutrino mass ordering. This paper focuses on an initial configuration of ORCA, referred to as ORCA6, which comprises six out of the foreseen 115 detection units of photo-sensors. A high-purity neutrino sample was extracted, corresponding to an exposure of 433 kton-years. The sample of 5828 neutrino candidates is analysed following a binned log-likelihood method in the reconstructed energy and cosine of the zenith angle. The atmospheric oscillation parameters are measured to be $\sin^2\theta_{23}= 0.51^{+0.04}_{-0.05}$, and $ \Delta m^2_{31} = 2.14^{+0.25}_{-0.35}\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2} \cup \{-2.25,-1.76\}\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ at 68\% CL. Abstract

The sensitivity of the MeerKAT radio interferometer is an opportunity to probe deeper into the population of rare and faint extragalactic pulsars. The TRAPUM (TRAnsients and PUlsars with MeerKAT) collaboration has conducted a radio-domain search for accelerated pulsars and transients in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This partially targeted survey, performed at L-band (856-1712 MHz) with the core array of the MeerKAT telescope in 2-h integrations, is twice as sensitive as the latest SMC radio pulsar survey. We report the discovery of seven new SMC pulsars, doubling this galaxy's radio pulsar population and increasing the total extragalactic population by nearly a quarter. We also carried out a search for accelerated millisecond pulsars in the SMC Globular Cluster NGC 121 using the full array of MeerKAT. This improved the previous upper limit on pulsed radio emission from this cluster by a factor of six. Our discoveries reveal the first radio pulsar-PWN systems in the SMC, with only one such system previously known outside our galaxy (the "Crab pulsar twin" in the Large Magellanic Cloud, PSR J0540$-$6919). We associate the 59 ms pulsar discovery PSR J0040$-$7337, now the fastest spinning radio pulsar in the SMC, with the bow-shock Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) of Supernova Remnant DEM S5. We also present a new young pulsar with a 79 ms period, PSR J0048$-$7317, in a PWN recently discovered in a MeerKAT radio continuum image. Using the multi-beam capability of MeerKAT, we localised our pulsar discoveries, and two previous Murriyang discoveries, to a positional uncertainty of a few arcseconds., Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures, 10 tables. Abstract

New advancements in radio data post-processing are underway within the SKA precursor community, aiming to facilitate the extraction of scientific results from survey images through a semi-automated approach. Several of these developments leverage deep learning (DL) methodologies for diverse tasks, including source detection, object or morphology classification, and anomaly detection. Despite substantial progress, the full potential of these methods often remains untapped due to challenges associated with training large supervised models, particularly in the presence of small and class-unbalanced labelled datasets. Self-supervised learning has recently established itself as a powerful methodology to deal with some of the aforementioned challenges, by directly learning a lower-dimensional representation from large samples of unlabelled data. The resulting model and data representation can then be used for data inspection and various downstream tasks if a small subset of labelled data is available. In this work, we explored contrastive learning methods to learn suitable radio data representation from unlabelled images taken from the ASKAP EMU and SARAO MeerKAT GPS surveys. We evaluated trained models and the obtained data representation over smaller labelled datasets, also taken from different radio surveys, in selected analysis tasks: source detection and classification, and search for objects with peculiar morphology. Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The recent GRB 221009A event, identified as the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected, provides a unique opportunity to investigate hadronic emissions involving neutrinos. The KM3NeT undersea neutrino detectors participated in the worldwide follow-up effort triggered by the event, searching for neutrino events. In this letter, we summarize subsequent searches, in a wide energy range from MeV up to a few PeVs. No neutrino events are found in any of the searches performed. Abstract

Generation of science-ready data from processed data products is one of the major challenges in next-generation radio continuum surveys with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and its precursors, due to the expected data volume and the need to achieve a high degree of automated processing. Source extraction, characterization, and classification are the major stages involved in this process. In this work we focus on the classification of compact radio sources in the Galactic plane using both radio and infrared images as inputs. To this aim, we produced a curated dataset of ~20,000 images of compact sources of different astronomical classes, obtained from past radio and infrared surveys, and novel radio data from pilot surveys carried out with the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). Radio spectral index information was also obtained for a subset of the data. We then trained two different classifiers on the produced dataset. The first model uses gradient-boosted decision trees and is trained on a set of pre-computed features derived from the data, which include radio-infrared colour indices and the radio spectral index. The second model is trained directly on multi-channel images, employing convolutional neural networks. Using a completely supervised procedure, we obtained a high classification accuracy (F1-score>90%) for separating Galactic objects from the extragalactic background. Individual class discrimination performances, ranging from 60% to 75%, increased by 10% when adding far-infrared and spectral index information, with extragalactic objects, PNe and HII regions identified with higher accuracies. Abstract

We present the first and deepest Australia Telescope Compact Array radio continuum images of the Honeycomb Nebula at 2000 and 5500 MHz solely from archival data. The resolutions of these images are 3.6 x 2.8 arcsec2 and 1.3 x 1.2 arcsec2 at 2000 and 5500 MHz. We find an average radio spectral index for the remnant of -0.76 +- 0.07. Polarisation maps at 5500 MHz reveal an average fractional polarisation of 25 +- 5% with a maximum value of 95 x 16. We estimate the equipartition field for Honeycomb Nebula of 48 +- 5 {\mu}G, with an estimated minimum energy of Emin = 3 x 1049 erg. The estimated surface brightness, {\Sigma}1 GHz , is 30 x 10-20 W m-2 Hz-1 sr-1; applying the {\Sigma}-D relation suggests this supernova remnant is expanding into a low-density environment. Finally, using Hi data, we can support the idea that the Honeycomb Nebula exploded inside a low-density wind cavity. We suggest that this remnant is likely to be between late free expansion stage and early Sedov phase of evolution and expanding into a low-density medium.

Abstract

The KM3NeT/ARCA neutrino detector is currently under construction at 3500 m depth offshore Capo Passero, Sicily, in the Mediterranean Sea. The main science objectives are the detection of high-energy cosmic neutrinos and the discovery of their sources. Simulations were conducted for the full KM3NeT/ARCA detector, instrumenting a volume of 1 km$^3$, to estimate the sensitivity and discovery potential to point-like neutrino sources and an all-sky diffuse neutrino flux. This paper covers the reconstruction of track- and shower-like signatures, as well as the criteria employed for neutrino event selection. By leveraging both the track and shower observation channels, the KM3NeT/ARCA detector demonstrates the capability to detect the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux within half a year of operation, achieving a 5$\sigma$ statistical significance. With an angular resolution below 0.1$^\circ$ for tracks and under 2$^\circ$ for showers, the sensitivity to point-like neutrino sources surpasses existing observed limits across the entire sky., Comment: 20 pages, 30 figures Submitted to EPJ-C

Abstract

We present new radio continuum images and a source catalogue from the MeerKAT survey in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The observations, at a central frequency of 1.3 GHz across a bandwidth of 0.8 GHz, encompass a field of view ~7 x 7 degrees and result in images with resolution of 8 arcsec. The median broad-band Stokes I image Root Mean Squared noise value is ~11 microJy/beam. The catalogue produced from these images contains 108,330 point sources and 517 compact extended sources. We also describe a UHF (544-1088 MHz) single pointing observation. We report the detection of a new confirmed Supernova Remnant (SNR) (MCSNR J0100-7211) with an X-ray magnetar at its centre and 10 new SNR candidates. This is in addition to the detection of 21 previously confirmed SNRs and two previously noted SNR candidates. Our new SNR candidates have typical surface brightness an order of magnitude below those previously known, and on the whole they are larger. The high sensitivity of the MeerKAT survey also enabled us to detect the bright end of the SMC Planetary Nebulae (PNe) sample - point-like radio emission is associated with 38 of 102 optically known PNe, of which 19 are new detections. Lastly, we present the detection of three foreground radio stars amidst 11 circularly polarised sources, and a few examples of morphologically interesting background radio galaxies from which the radio ring galaxy ESO 029-G034 may represent a new type of radio object., Comment: 31 pages, 27 figures

Abstract

The KM3NeT neutrino telescope is currently being deployed at two different sites in the Mediterranean Sea. First searches for astrophysical neutrinos have been performed using data taken with the partial detector configuration already in operation. The paper presents the results of two independent searches for neutrinos from compact binary mergers detected during the third observing run of the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave interferometers. The first search looks for a global increase in the detector counting rates that could be associated with inverse beta decay events generated by MeV-scale electron anti-neutrinos. The second one focuses on upgoing track-like events mainly induced by muon (anti-)neutrinos in the GeV--TeV energy range. Both searches yield no significant excess for the sources in the gravitational wave catalogs. For each source, upper limits on the neutrino flux and on the total energy emitted in neutrinos in the respective energy ranges have been set. Stacking analyses of binary black hole mergers and neutron star-black hole mergers have also been performed to constrain the characteristic neutrino emission from these categories., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We present the first compelling evidence of shock-heated molecular clouds associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using $^{12}$CO($J$ = 2-1, 3-2) and $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1) line emission data taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array, we derived the H$_2$ number density and kinetic temperature of eight $^{13}$CO-detected clouds using the large velocity gradient approximation at a resolution of 3.5$''$ (~0.8 pc at the LMC distance). The physical properties of the clouds are divided into two categories: three of them near the shock front show the highest temperatures of ~50 K with densities of ~500-700 cm$^{-3}$, while other clouds slightly distant from the SNR have moderate temperatures of ~20 K with densities of ~800-1300 cm$^{-3}$. The former clouds were heated by supernova shocks, but the latter were dominantly affected by the cosmic-ray heating. These findings are consistent with the efficient production of X-ray recombining plasma in N49 due to thermal conduction between the cold clouds and hot plasma. We also find that the gas pressure is roughly constant except for the three shock-engulfed clouds inside or on the SNR shell, suggesting that almost no clouds have evaporated within the short SNR age of ~4800 yr. Abstract

We present new and archival Australia Telescope Compact Array and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data of the Small Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant 1E 0102.2-7219 at 2100, 5500, 9000, and 108000 MHz; as well as Hi data provided by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. The remnant shows a ring-like morphology with a mean radius of 6.2 pc. The 5500 MHz image reveals a bridge-like structure, seen for the first time in a radio image. This structure is also visible in both optical and X-ray images. In the 9000 MHz image we detect a central feature that has a flux density of 4.3 mJy but rule out a pulsar wind nebula origin, due to the lack of significant polarisation towards the central feature with an upper limit of 4 per cent. The mean fractional polarisation for 1E 0102.2-7219 is 7 +- 1 and 12 +- 2 per cent for 5500 and 9000 MHz, respectively. The spectral index for the entire remnant is -0.61 +- 0.01. We estimate the line-of-sight magnetic field strength in the direction of 1E 0102.2-7219 of ~44 microG with an equipartition field of 65 +- 5 microG. This latter model, uses the minimum energy of the sum of the magnetic field and cosmic ray electrons only. We detect an Hi cloud towards this remnant at the velocity range of ~160-180 km s-1 and a cavity-like structure at the velocity of 163.7-167.6 km s-1. We do not detect CO emission towards 1E 0102.2-7219.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array and the KM3NeT neutrino telescopes are major upcoming facilities in the fields of $\gamma$-ray and neutrino astronomy, respectively. Possible simultaneous production of $\gamma$ rays and neutrinos in astrophysical accelerators of cosmic-ray nuclei motivates a combination of their data. We assess the potential of a combined analysis of CTA and KM3NeT data to determine the contribution of hadronic emission processes in known Galactic $\gamma$-ray emitters, comparing this result to the cases of two separate analyses. In doing so, we demonstrate the capability of Gammapy, an open-source software package for the analysis of $\gamma$-ray data, to also process data from neutrino telescopes. For a selection of prototypical $\gamma$-ray sources within our Galaxy, we obtain models for primary proton and electron spectra in the hadronic and leptonic emission scenario, respectively, by fitting published $\gamma$-ray spectra. Using these models and instrument response functions for both detectors, we employ the Gammapy package to generate pseudo data sets, where we assume 200 hours of CTA observations and 10 years of KM3NeT detector operation. We then apply a three-dimensional binned likelihood analysis to these data sets, separately for each instrument and jointly for both. We find that the largest benefit of the combined analysis lies in the possibility of a consistent modelling of the $\gamma$-ray and neutrino emission. Assuming a purely leptonic scenario as input, we obtain, for the most favourable source, an average expected 68% credible interval that constrains the contribution of hadronic processes to the observed $\gamma$-ray emission to below 15%., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures. v2: Matches version published in EPJC

Abstract

The KM3NeT Collaboration is building and operating two deep sea neutrino telescopes at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The telescopes consist of latices of photomultiplier tubes housed in pressure-resistant glass spheres, called digital optical modules and arranged in vertical detection units. The two main scientific goals are the determination of the neutrino mass ordering and the discovery and observation of high-energy neutrino sources in the Universe. Neutrinos are detected via the Cherenkov light, which is induced by charged particles originated in neutrino interactions. The photomultiplier tubes convert the Cherenkov light into electrical signals that are acquired and timestamped by the acquisition electronics. Each optical module houses the acquisition electronics for collecting and timestamping the photomultiplier signals with one nanosecond accuracy. Once finished, the two telescopes will have installed more than six thousand optical acquisition nodes, completing one of the more complex networks in the world in terms of operation and synchronization. The embedded software running in the acquisition nodes has been designed to provide a framework that will operate with different hardware versions and functionalities. The hardware will not be accessible once in operation, which complicates the embedded software architecture. The embedded software provides a set of tools to facilitate remote manageability of the deployed hardware, including safe reconfiguration of the firmware. This paper presents the architecture and the techniques, methods and implementation of the embedded software running in the acquisition nodes of the KM3NeT neutrino telescopes.

Abstract

Multifrequency studies of galaxy clusters are crucial for inferring their dynamical states and physics. Moreover, these studies allow us to investigate cluster-embedded sources, whose evolution is affected by the physical and dynamical condition of the cluster itself. So far, these kinds of studies have been preferentially conducted on clusters visible from the northern hemisphere due to the high-fidelity imaging capabilities of ground-based radio interferometers located there. In this paper, we conducted a multifrequency study of the poorly known galaxy cluster Abell 3718. We investigated the unknown origin of an extended radio source with a length of $\sim$612 kpc at 943 MHz detected in images from the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) and POlarisation Sky Survey of the Universe's Magnetism (POSSUM) surveys. We analyzed optical and X-ray data to infer the dynamical state of the cluster and, in particular, the merger activity. We conducted a radio spectral index study from 943 MHz up to 9 GHz. We also evaluated the polarization properties of the brightest cluster-embedded sources to understand if they are related to the radio emission observed on larger scales. Abstract

In the era of precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters, upcoming neutrino experiments will also be sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. KM3NeT/ORCA is a neutrino detector optimised for measuring atmospheric neutrinos from a few GeV to around 100 GeV. In this paper, the sensitivity of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector to neutrino decay has been explored. A three-flavour neutrino oscillation scenario, where the third neutrino mass state $\nu_3$ decays into an invisible state, e.g. a sterile neutrino, is considered. We find that KM3NeT/ORCA would be sensitive to invisible neutrino decays with $1/\alpha_3=\tau_3/m_3 < 180$~$\mathrm{ps/eV}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, assuming true normal ordering. Finally, the impact of neutrino decay on the precision of KM3NeT/ORCA measurements for $\theta_{23}$, $\Delta m^2_{31}$ and mass ordering have been studied. 21. Radio Detection of 18 RASS BL Lac Objects

Abstract

We present the radio detection of 18 BL Lac objects from oursurvey of over 575 deg$^2$ of sky. These 18 objects are located within$20arcsec$ of the X-ray position, of which 11 have a measuredred-shift. All candidates are radio emitters above $sim$1 mJy and fall within the range of existing samples on the two colour, $alpha _mathrm{RO}$ vs $alpha _mathrm{OX}$, diagram with a transitional population of three evident. Two unusual sources have been identified, a candidate radio quiet BL Lac, RX J0140.9-4130, and an extreme HBL, RX J0109.9-4020, with $log( u _mathrm{peak})approx 19.2$. The BL Lac $log(N)-log(S)$ relation is consistent with other samples and indicates the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) could contain ($2000{pm}400$) BL Lac objects.

Abstract

We present the results of new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of one of the largest supernova remnants, SNR J0450-709, in the Local Group of galaxies. We found that this Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) object exhibits a typical morphology of an old supernova remnant (SNR) with diameter $D = 102 x 75 pm 1$ pc and radio spectral index $alpha = -0.43 pm 0.06$. Regions of high polarisation were detected with peak value of $sim$40 per cent.

The observationsmaking up the mosaic were made using Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA)over a ten year period and were combined with Parkes single dish data at 1.4 GHz to complete the image for short spacing. An initial list of co-identifications within 10arcsec at 0.843, 4.8 and 8.6 GHz consisted of 2682 sources. Elimination of extended objects and artifact noise allowed the creation of a refined list containing 1988 point sources. Most of these are presumed to be background objects seen through the LMC; a small portion may represent compact HII regions, young SNRs and radio planetary nebulae. For the 1988 point sources we find a preliminary average spectral index ($alpha$) of -0.53 and present a 1.4 GHz image showing source locationin the direction of the LMC.

Abstract

We analyze the cooling and feedback properties of 48 galaxy clusters at redshifts $0.4 < z < 1.3$ selected from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) catalogs to evolve like the progenitors of massive and well-studied systems at $z{\sim}0$. We estimate the radio power at the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) location of each cluster from an analysis of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) data. Assuming that the scaling relation between radio power and active galactic nucleus (AGN) cavity power $P_{\mathrm{cav}}$ observed at low redshift does not evolve with redshift, we use these measurements in order to estimate the expected AGN cavity power in the core of each system. We estimate the X-ray luminosity within the cooling radius $L_{\mathrm{cool}}$ of each cluster from a joint analysis of the available $Chandra$ X-ray and SPT Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) data. This allows us to characterize the redshift evolution of the $P_{\mathrm{cav}} / L_{\mathrm{cool}}$ ratio. When combined with low-redshift results, these constraints enable investigations of the properties of the feedback/cooling cycle across 9~Gyr of cluster growth. We model the redshift evolution of this ratio measured for cool core clusters by a log-normal distribution $\mathrm{Log}$-$\mathcal{N}(\alpha + \beta z, \sigma^2)$ and constrain the slope of the mean evolution $\beta = -0.05\pm 0.47$. This analysis improves the constraints on the slope of this relation by a factor of two. We find no evidence of redshift evolution of the feedback/cooling equilibrium in these clusters which suggests that the onset of radio-mode feedback took place at an early stage of cluster formation. High values of $P_{\mathrm{cav}} / L_{\mathrm{cool}}$ are found at the BCG location of non-cool core clusters which might suggest that the timescales of the AGN feedback cycle and the cool core / non-cool core transition are different., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

We present the discovery of highly-collimated radio jets spanning a total of 355 kpc around the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 2663, and the possible first detection of recollimation on kiloparsec scales. The small distance to the galaxy (~28.5 Mpc) allows us to resolve portions of the jets to examine their structure. We combine multiwavelength data: radio observations by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and X-ray data from Chandra, Swift and SRG/eROSITA. We present intensity, rotation measure, polarisation, spectral index and X-ray environment maps. Regions of the southern jet show simultaneous narrowing and brightening, which can be interpreted as a signature of the recollimation of the jet by external, environmental pressure, though it is also consistent with an intermittent Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) or complex internal jet structure. Abstract

We present 11 spectra from 12 candidate radio sources co-identified with known planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Originally found in Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) LMC surveys at 1.4, 4.8 and 8.64~GHz and confirmed by new high resolution ATCA images at 6 and 3~cm (4arcsec/2arcsec), these complement data recently presented for candidate radio PNe in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Their spectra were obtained using the Radcliffe 1.9-meter telescope in Sutherland (South Africa). All of the optical PNe and radio candidates are within 2arcsec and may represent a population of selected radio bright sample only. Nebular ionized masses of these objects are estimated to be as high as 1.8~$M_odot$, supporting the idea that massive PNe progenitor central stars lose much of their mass in the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase or prior. We also identify a sub-population (33\%) of radio PNe candidates with prominent ionized iron emission lines.

Abstract

We present the results of new moderate resolution ATCA observations of SNR. We found that this SNR exhibits a mostly typical appearance with rather steep and curved $alpha$=--0.81$pm$0.18 and D=43$imes$31$pm$1~pc. Regions of high polarisation were detected, including unusually strong ($sim$70\%) region corresponding to the northern breakout. Such a strong polarisation in breakout regions has not been observed in any other SNR.

Abstract

We present preliminary results from spectral observations of four (4) candidate radio sources co-identified with known planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These were made using the Radcliffe 1.9-meter telescope in Sutherland, South Africa. These radio PNe were originally found in Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) surveys of the SMC at 1.42 and 2.37~GHz, and were further confirmed by new high resolution ATCA images at 6 and 3 cm (4arcsec/2arcsec). Optical PNe and radio candidates are within 2arcsec and may represent a sub-population of selected radio bright objects. Nebular ionized masses of these objects may be 2.6~$M_odot$ or greater, supporting the existence of PNe progenitor central stars with masses up to 8 $M_odot$.

29. Evidence of Molecular Adaptation to Extreme Environments and Applicability to Space Environments

Abstract

This is initial investigation of gene signatures responsible for adapting microscopic life to the extreme Earth environments. We present preliminary results on identification of the clusters of orthologous groups (COGs) common to several hyperthermophiles and exclusion of those common to a mesophile (non-hyperthermophile): {it Escherichia coli (E. coli K12)}, will yield a group of proteins possibly involved in adaptation to life under extreme temperatures. Comparative genome analyses represent a powerful tool in discovery of novel genes responsible for adaptation to specific extreme environments. Methanogens stand out as the only group of organisms that have species capable of growth at 0D C ({it Metarhizium frigidum (M.~frigidum)} and {it Methanococcoides burtonii (M.~burtonii)}) and 110D C ({it Methanopyrus kandleri (M.~kandleri)}). Although not all the components of heat adaptation can be attributed to novel genes, the {it chaperones} known as heat shock proteins stabilize the enzymes under elevated temperature. However, highly conserved {it chaperons} found in bacteria and eukaryots are not present in hyperthermophilic Archea, rather, they have a unique {it chaperone TF55}. Our aim was to use software which we specifically developed for extremophile genome comparative analyses in order to search for additional novel genes involved in hyperthermophile adaptation. The followinghyperthermophile genomes incorporated in this software were used forthese studies: {it Methanocaldococcus jannaschii (M.~jannaschii), M.~kandleri, Archaeoglobus fulgidus (A.~fulgidus)} and threespecies of {it Pyrococcus}. Common genes were annotated and groupedaccording to their roles in cellular processes where such informationwas available and proteins not previously implicated in theheat-adaptation of hyperthermophiles were identified. Additionalexperimental data are needed in order to learn more about theseproteins. To address non-gene based components of thermaladaptation, all sequenced extremophiles were analysed for their GCcontents and aminoacid hydrophobicity. Finally, we develop a prediction model for optimal growth temperature.

Abstract

We present the results of new high resolution ATCA observations of SNR J0519-6926. We found that this SNR exhibits a typical "horseshoe" appearance with $alpha$=--0.55$pm$0.08 and D=28$pm1$~pc. No polarization (or magnetic fields) were detected to a level of 1\%. This is probably due to a relatively poor sampling of the $uv$ plane caused be observing in "snap-shot" mode.

Abstract

We report new HI observations of the Type Ia supernova remnant SN 1006 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array with an angular resolution of $4.5' \times 1.4'$ ($\sim$2 pc at the assumed SNR distance of 2.2 kpc). We find an expanding gas motion in position-velocity diagrams of HI with an expansion velocity of $\sim$4 km s$^{-1}$ and a mass of $\sim$1000 $M_\odot$. The spatial extent of the expanding shell is roughly the same as that of SN 1006. We here propose a hypothesis that SN 1006 exploded inside the wind-blown bubble formed by accretion winds from the progenitor system consisting of a white dwarf and a companion star, and then the forward shock has already reached the wind wall. This scenario is consistent with the single-degenerate model. We also derived the total energy of cosmic-ray protons $W_\mathrm{p}$ to be only $\sim$1.2-$2.0 \times 10^{47}$ erg by adopting the averaged interstellar proton density of $\sim$25 cm$^{-3}$. The small value is compatible with the relation between the age and $W_\mathrm{p}$ of other gamma-ray supernova remnants with ages below $\sim$6 kyr. The $W_\mathrm{p}$ value in SN 1006 will possibly increase up to several 10$^{49}$ erg in the next $\sim$5 kyr via the cosmic-ray diffusion into the HI wind-shell., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Abstract

The X-ray emission from a supernova remnant is a powerful diagnostic of the state of its shocked plasma. The temperature and the emission measure are related to the energy of the explosion, the age of the remnant, and the density of the surrounding medium. Here we present the results of a study of the remnant population of the Small Magellanic Cloud. Progress in X-ray observations of remnants has resulted in a sample of 20 remnants in the Small Magellanic Clound with measured temperatures and emission measures. We apply spherically symmetric supernova remnant evolution models to this set of remnants, to estimate ages, explosion energies, and circumstellar medium densities. The distribution of ages yields a remnant birthrate of $\sim$1/1200 yr. The energies and densities are well fit with log-normal distributions, with means of 1.6$\times10^{51}$ erg and 0.14 cm$^{-3}$, and 1$\sigma$ dispersions of a factor of 1.87 in energy and 3.06 in density, respectively., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

We present the first measurement of pulse scattering close to the eclipse region of PSR B1957+20, which is in a compact binary system with a low-mass star. We measured pulse scattering time-scales up to 0.2 ms close to the eclipse and showed that it scales with the dispersion measure (DM) excess roughly as $\tau\propto\Delta{\rm DM}^{2}$. Our observations provide the first evidence of strong scattering due to multi-path propagation effects in the eclipsing material. We show that Kolmogorov turbulence in the eclipsing material with an inner scale of $\sim100$ m and an outer scale of the size of the eclipse region can naturally explain the observation. Our results show that the eclipsing material in such systems can be highly turbulent and suggest that scattering is one of the main eclipsing mechanisms at around 1.4 GHz., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, MNRAS accepted

Abstract

The environment of actively repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been shown to be complex and varying. The recently localized FRB 20190520B is extremely active, has the largest confirmed host dispersion measure, and is only the second FRB source associated with a compact, persistent radio source (PRS). The main tracer of the magneto-ionic environments is the rotation measure (RM), a path-integral of the line-of-sight component of magnetic field strength (B) and electron density, which does not allow a direct probe of the B-field configuration. Here we report direct evidence for a B-field reversal based on the observed sign change and extreme variation of FRB 20190520B's RM, which changed from $\sim10000$ rad m$^{-2}$ to $\sim-16000$ rad m$^{-2}$ between June 2021 and January 2022. Such extreme RM reversal has never been observed before in any FRB nor in any astronomical object. The implied short-term change of the B-field configuration in or around the FRB could be due to the vicinity of massive black holes, or a magnetized companion star in binary systems, or a young supernova remnant along the line of sight., Comment: It was merged into arXiv:2202.11112. Abstract

With the entire Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) mapped by the Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory, we were able to search 8-250 micron images in order to identify infrared (IR) emission associated with SMC supernova remnants (SNRs). A valid detection had to correspond with known X-ray, Halpha and radio emission from the SNRs. From the 24 known SNRs, we made 5 positive detections with another 5 possible detections. Two detections are associated with pulsars or pulsar wind nebula, and another three detections are part of the extended nebulous emission from the SNRs. We modelled dust emission where fast moving electrons are predicted to collide and heat dust grains which then radiate in IR. With known distance (62.44+-0.47kpc), measured SNR sizes, electron densities, temperatures from X-ray emission as well as hydrogen densities, the modelling of SMC SNRs is straightforward. If the higher range of hydrogen and electron densities were to be accepted, we would expect almost all SMC SNRs to be detected in the IR, at least at 24 micron, but the actual detection rate is only 25%. One possible and common explanation for this discrepancy is that small grains have been destroyed by the SNRs shockwave. However, within the uncertainties of hydrogen and electron densities, we find that infrared dust emission can be explained reasonably well, without invoking dust destruction. Abstract

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) hosts a rich population of supernova remnants (SNRs), our knowledge of which is the most complete of any galaxy. However, there remain many candidate SNRs, identified through optical and radio observations where additional X-ray data can confirm their SNR nature and provide details on their physical properties. In this paper we present XMM-Newton observations that provide the first deep X-ray coverage of ten objects, comprising eight candidates and two previously confirmed SNRs. We perform multi-frequency studies using additional data from the Magellanic Cloud Emission Line Survey (MCELS) to investigate their broadband emission and used Spitzer data to understand the environment in which the objects are evolving. We confirm seven of the eight candidates as bona-fide SNRs. We used a multi-frequency morphological study to determine the position and size of the remnants. We identify two new members of the class of evolved Fe-rich remnants in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), several SNRs well into their Sedov-phase, one SNR likely projected towards a HII region, and a faint, evolved SNR with a hard X-ray core which could indicate a pulsar wind nebula. Overall, the seven newly confirmed SNRs represent a ~10% increase in the number of LMC remnants, bringing the total number to 71, and provide further insight into the fainter population of X-ray SNRs., Comment: 31 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. Abstract

The KM3NeT Collaboration is currently constructing a multi-site high-energy neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea consisting of matrices of pressure-resistant glass spheres, each holding a set of 31 small-area photomultipliers. The main goals of the telescope are the observation of neutrino sources in the Universe and the measurement of the neutrino oscillation parameters with atmospheric neutrinos. Both extraterrestrial and atmospheric neutrinos are detected through the Cherenkov light induced in seawater by charged particles produced in neutrino interactions in the surrounding medium. A relative time synchronization between photomultipliers of the order of 1 ns is needed to guarantee the required angular resolution of the detector. Due to the large detector volumes to be instrumented by KM3NeT, a cost reduction of the different systems is a priority. To this end, the inexpensive Nanobeacon has been designed and developed by the KM3NeT Collaboration to be used for detector time-calibration studies. At present, more than 600 Nanobeacons have been already produced. The characterization of the optical pulse and the wavelength emission profile of the devices are critical for the time calibration. In this paper, the main features of the Nanobeacon design, production and operation, together with the main properties of the light pulse generated are described.

Abstract

The KM3NeT research infrastructure is under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. KM3NeT will study atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos with two multi-purpose neutrino detectors, ARCA and ORCA, primarily aimed at GeV-PeV neutrinos. Thanks to the multi-photomultiplier tube design of the digital optical modules, KM3NeT is capable of detecting the neutrino burst from a Galactic or near-Galactic core-collapse supernova. This potential is already exploitable with the first detection units deployed in the sea. This paper describes the real-time implementation of the supernova neutrino search, operating on the two KM3NeT detectors since the first months of 2019. A quasi-online astronomy analysis is introduced to study the time profile of the detected neutrinos for especially significant events. The mechanism of generation and distribution of alerts, as well as the integration into the SNEWS and SNEWS 2.0 global alert systems are described. The approach for the follow-up of external alerts with a search for a neutrino excess in the archival data is defined. Abstract

This article presents the potential of a combined analysis of the JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. This combination is particularly interesting as it significantly boosts the potential of either detector, beyond simply adding their neutrino mass ordering sensitivities, by removing a degeneracy in the determination of $\Delta m_{31}^2$ between the two experiments when assuming the wrong ordering. The study is based on the latest projected performances for JUNO, and on simulation tools using a full Monte Carlo approach to the KM3NeT/ORCA response with a careful assessment of its energy systematics. From this analysis, a $5\sigma$ determination of the neutrino mass ordering is expected after 6 years of joint data taking for any value of the oscillation parameters. This sensitivity would be achieved after only 2 years of joint data taking assuming the current global best-fit values for those parameters for normal ordering., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures

40. Discovery of a Wind-Blown Bubble Associated with the Supernova Remnant G346.6-0.2: A Hint for the Origin of Recombining Plasma

Abstract

We report on CO and HI studies of the mixed-morphology supernova remnant (SNR) G346.6$-$0.2. We find a wind-blown bubble along the radio continuum shell with an expansion velocity of $\sim10$ km s$^{-1}$, which was likely formed by strong stellar winds from the high-mass progenitor of the SNR. The radial velocities of the CO/HI bubbles at $V_\mathrm{LSR} = -82$-$-59$ km s$^{-1}$ are also consistent with those of shock-excited 1720 MHz OH masers. The molecular cloud in the northeastern shell shows a high-kinetic temperature of $\sim60$ K, suggesting that shock-heating occurred. The HI absorption studies imply that G346.6$-$0.2 is located on the far side of the Galactic center from us, and the kinematic distance of the SNR is derived to be $11.1_{-0.3}^{+0.5}$ kpc. We find that the CO line intensity has no specific correlation with the electron temperature of recombining plasma, implying that the recombining plasma in G346.6$-$0.2 was likely produced by adiabatic cooling. With our estimates of the interstellar proton density 280 cm$^{-3}$ and gamma-ray luminosity $< 5.8 \times 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$, the total energy of accelerated cosmic rays $W_{\rm p} < 9.3 \times 10^{47}$ erg is obtained. A comparison of the age-$W_{\rm p}$ relation to other SNRs suggests that most of the accelerated cosmic rays in G346.6$-$0.2 have been escaped from the SNR shell., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Abstract

We present a comprehensive multi-frequency catalogue of radio sources behind the Large Magellanic Cloud between 0.2 and 20 GHz, gathered from a combination of new and legacy radio continuum surveys. This catalogue covers an area of $\sim$144~deg$^2$ at angular resolutions from 45 arcsec to $\sim$3 arcmin. We find 6434 discrete radio sources in total, of which 3789 are detected at two or more radio frequencies. We estimate the median spectral index ($\alpha$; where $S_{v}\sim\nu^\alpha$) of $\alpha = -0.89 $ and mean of $-0.88 \pm 0.48$ for 3636 sources detected exclusively at two frequencies (0.843 and 1.384 GHz) with similar resolution (FWHM $\sim$40-45 arcsec). The large frequency range of the surveys makes it an effective tool to investigate Gigahertz Peak Spectrum (GPS), Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Infrared Faint Radio sources populations within our sample. We find 10 GPS candidates with peak frequencies near 5 GHz, from which we estimate their linear size. 1866 sources from our catalogue are (CSS) candidates with $\alpha <-0.8$. We found six candidates for High Frequency Peaker (HFP) sources, whose radio fluxes peak above 5 GHz and no sources with unconstrained peaks and $\alpha~>0.5$. We found optical counterparts for 343 of the radio continuum sources, of which 128have a redshift measurement. Finally, we investigate the population of 123 Infrared Faint Radio Sources (IFRSs) found in this study., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

KM3NeT/ORCA is a next-generation neutrino telescope optimised for atmospheric neutrino oscillations studies. In this paper, the sensitivity of ORCA to the presence of a light sterile neutrino in a 3+1 model is presented. After three years of data taking, ORCA will be able to probe the active-sterile mixing angles $\theta_{14}$, $\theta_{24}$, $\theta_{34}$ and the effective angle $\theta_{\mu e}$, over a broad range of mass squared difference $\Delta m^2_{41} \sim [10^{-5}, 10]$ $\rm{eV}^2$, allowing to test the eV-mass sterile neutrino hypothesis as the origin of short baseline anomalies, as well as probing the hypothesis of a very light sterile neutrino, not yet constrained by cosmology. ORCA will be able to explore a relevant fraction of the parameter space not yet reached by present measurements.

43. ALMA CO Observations of the Mixed-Morphology Supernova Remnant W49B: Efficient Production of Recombining Plasma and Hadronic Gamma-rays via Shock-Cloud Interactions

Abstract

We carried out new CO($J$ = 2-1) observations toward the mixed-morphology supernova remnant (SNR) W49B with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We found that CO clouds at $\sim$10 km s$^{-1}$ show a good spatial correspondence with synchrotron radio continuum as well as an X-ray deformed shell. The bulk mass of molecular clouds accounts for the western part of the shell, not for the eastern shell where near-infrared H$_2$ emission is detected. The molecular clouds at $\sim$10 km s$^{-1}$ show higher kinetic temperature of $\sim$20-60 K, suggesting that modest shock-heating occurred. The expanding motion of the clouds with $\Delta V \sim$6 km s$^{-1}$ was formed by strong winds from the progenitor system. We argue that the barrel-like structure of Fe rich ejecta was possibly formed not only by an asymmetric explosion, but also by interactions with dense molecular clouds. We also found a negative correlation between the CO intensity and the electron temperature of recombining plasma, implying that the origin of the high-temperature recombining plasma in W49B can be understood as the thermal conduction model. The total energy of accelerated cosmic-ray protons $W_\mathrm{p}$ is estimated to be $\sim$$2\times 10^{49}$ erg by adopting an averaged gas density of $\sim$$650\pm200$ cm$^{-3}$. The SNR age-$W_\mathrm{p}$ diagram indicates that W49B shows one of the highest in-situ values of $W_\mathrm{p}$ in the gamma-ray bright SNRs., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, published in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Abstract

30 Doradus C is a superbubble which emits the brightest nonthermal X- and TeV gamma-rays in the Local Group. In order to explore detailed connection between the high energy radiation and the interstellar medium, we have carried out new CO and HI observations using the Atacama Large Millimeter$/$Submillimeter Array (ALMA), Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array with resolutions of up to 3 pc. The ALMA data of $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) emission revealed 23 molecular clouds with the typical diameters of $\sim$6-12 pc and masses of $\sim$600-10000 $M_{\odot}$. The comparison with the X-rays of $XMM$-$Newton$ at $\sim$3 pc resolution shows that X-rays are enhanced toward these clouds. The CO data were combined with the HI to estimate the total interstellar protons. Comparison of the interstellar proton column density and the X-rays revealed that the X-rays are enhanced with the total proton. These are most likely due to the shock-cloud interaction modeled by the magnetohydrodynamical simulations (Inoue et al. 2012, ApJ, 744, 71). Further, we note a trend that the X-ray photon index varies with distance from the center of the high-mass star cluster, suggesting that the cosmic-ray electrons are accelerated by one or multiple supernovae in the cluster. Abstract

The physics of the non-thermal Universe provides information on the acceleration mechanisms in extreme environments, such as black holes and relativistic jets, neutron stars, supernovae or clusters of galaxies. In the presence of magnetic fields, particles can be accelerated towards relativistic energies. As a consequence, radiation along the entire electromagnetic spectrum can be observed, and extreme environments are also the most likely sources of multi-messenger emission. The most energetic part of the electromagnetic spectrum corresponds to the very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray regime, which can be extensively studied with ground based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The results obtained by the current generation of IACTs, such as H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS, demonstrate the crucial importance of the VHE band in understanding the non-thermal emission of extreme environments in our Universe. In some objects, the energy output in gamma rays can even outshine the rest of the broadband spectrum. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation of IACTs, which, with cutting edge technology and a strategic configuration of ~100 telescopes distributed in two observing sites, in the northern and southern hemispheres, will reach better sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, and broader energy coverage than currently operational IACTs. Abstract

The discovery of gravitational waves, high-energy neutrinos or the very-high-energy counterpart of gamma-ray bursts has revolutionized the high-energy and transient astrophysics community. The development of new instruments and analysis techniques will allow the discovery and/or follow-up of new transient sources. We describe the prospects for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory, for multi-messenger and transient astrophysics in the decade ahead. Abstract

Astrophysical observations provide strong evidence that more than 80% of all matter in the Universe is in the form of dark matter (DM). Two leading candidates of particles beyond the Standard Model that could constitute all or a fraction of the DM content are the so-called Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and Axion-Like Particles (ALPs). The upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array, which will observe gamma rays between 20 GeV and 300 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity, will have unique capabilities to search for these DM candidates. A particularly promising target for WIMP searches is the Galactic Center. WIMPs with annihilation cross sections correctly producing the DM relic density will be detectable with CTA, assuming an Einasto-like density profile and WIMP masses between 200 GeV and 10 TeV. Abstract

We report here on the discovery with XMM-Newton of pulsations at 22 ms from the central compact source associated with IKT16, a supernova remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The measured spin period and spin period derivative correspond to 21.7661076(2) ms and $2.9(3)\times10^{-14}$ s,s$^{-1}$, respectively. Assuming standard spin-down by magnetic dipole radiation, the spin-down power corresponds to $1.1\times10^{38}$,erg,s$^{-1}$ implying a Crab-like pulsar. This makes it the most energetic pulsar discovered in the SMC so far and a close analogue of PSR J0537--6910, a Crab-like pulsar in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The characteristic age of the pulsar is 12 kyr. Having for the first time a period measure for this source, we also searched for the signal in archival data collected in radio with the Parkes telescope and in Gamma-rays with the Fermi/LAT, but no evidence for pulsation was found in these energy bands., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

Aims: The giant HII region 30 Doradus (30 Dor) located in the eastern part of the Large Magellanic Cloud is one of the most active star-forming regions in the Local Group. Studies of HI data have revealed two large gas structures which must have collided with each other in the region around 30 Dor. In X-rays there is extended emission ($\sim 1$ kpc) south of 30 Dor called the X-ray spur, which appears to be anticorrelated with the HI gas. We study the properties of the hot interstellar medium (ISM) in the X-ray spur and investigate its origin including related interactions in the ISM. Methods: We analyzed new and archival XMM-Newton data of the X-ray spur and its surroundings to determine the properties of the hot diffuse plasma. We created detailed plasma property maps by utilizing the Voronoi tessellation algorithm. We also studied HI and CO data, as well as optical line emission data of H$\alpha$ and [SII], and compared them to the results of the X-ray spectral analysis. Results: We find evidence of two hot plasma components with temperatures of $kT_1 \sim 0.2$ keV and $kT_2 \sim 0.5-0.9$ keV, with the hotter component being much more pronounced near 30 Dor and the X-ray spur. In 30 Dor, the plasma has most likely been heated by massive stellar winds and supernova remnants. In the X-ray spur, we find no evidence of heating by stars.
