O abutre real (Sarcoramphus papa) é um pássaro compacto de cor extraordinária, cabeça nua, possui carúnculas e papilas carnudas vermelhas e alaranjadas em torno do bico, a íris é branca com um anel orbital vermelho. Em cativeiro, o estresse é uma condição bastante observada, o que pode levar a automutilação, podendo evoluir para lesões graves na pele e músculos. O objetivo do presente relato é descrever os procedimentos adotados em um caso de automutilação em Sarcoramphus papa, mantido em cativeiro, e a importância do manejo adequado para essa espécie em cativeiro. Foi atendido em um Hospital Veterinário Universitário, um urubu-rei apresentando ferimento contaminado, com exposição óssea na asa direita. Após tratamento o animal foi encaminhado para uma reserva conservacionista para que fosse condicionada a voltar para seu habitat natural.

Neonatology (the study of newborns) remains a little-explored specialty in medical clinics treating dogs. Therefore, neonatal mortality in dogs is high, and there is a lack of data on the subject in Brazil. The objective of this study was to record the neonatal mortality rate in dogs being treated at a Teaching Veterinary Hospital. We analyzed 69 (35 female and 34 male) newborn puppies born to 17 female dogs. The majority of the female dogs (94%; 16/17) and had dystocic parturition. Of the 69 puppies, only 30 (43.47%) survived the first 24 hours after birth. Based on these numbers, the neonatal mortality was considerably high at 56.52% (39/69), probably due to hypoxia that is known to be common in neonates with dystocic births. Given the above, it is concluded that assisted reproduction and prenatal examinations should be encouraged to reduce neonatal mortality in dogs. La neonatología (estudio o área de recién nacidos) es una especialización un poco explorada en la clínica médica canina. Por lo tanto, alta mortalidad neonatal y también falta de datos sobre o no Brasil. El objetivo de este trabajo fue registrar la tasa de mortalidad neonatal de perros en un Hospital Veterinario Universitario. Se analizaron 69 cachorros caninos (provenientes de 17 hembras) recién nacidos (35 hembras y 34 machos). La mayoría de las mujeres estaban en trabajo de parto (94%; 16/17) y presentaron trabajo de parto distócico. Número total de cachorros (69), 30 sobrevivieron las primeras 24 horas (43,47%; 30/69). Por tanto, la mortalidad neonatal fue del 56,52% (39/69), considerándose una tasa muy alta, probablemente debido a la hipoxia que es común en los neonatos originada en partos distócicos. Durante la exposición, se concluyó que se debe fomentar la reproducción asistida y los exámenes prenatales para reducir la mortalidad neonatal en los niños. A neonatologia (área que estuda o recém-nascido) é uma especialidade ainda pouco explorada na clínica médica de cães. Dessa maneira, a mortalidade neonatal é alta e também há carência de dados sobre o tema no Brasil. O objetivo deste trabalho foi registrar a taxa de mortalidade neonatal de cães em um Hospital Veterinário Universitário. Foram analisados 69 filhotes caninos (oriundos de 17 fêmeas) recém-nascidos (35 fêmeas e 34 machos). A maior parte das fêmeas estavam em trabalho de parto (94%; 16/17) e apresentaram parto distócico. Do total de filhotes (69), 30 sobreviveram nas primeiras 24 horas (43,47%; 30/69). Portanto a mortalidade neonatal foi de 56,52% (39/69), sendo considerada uma taxa muito elevada, provavelmente devido à hipóxia que é comum em neonatos oriundos de partos distócicos. Diante do exposto, conclui-se que a reprodução assistida e exames pré-natais devem ser incentivados para a redução da mortalidade neonatal em cães.

Anomalias reprodutivas em fêmeas domésticas são de rara ocorrência e caracterizam-se na grande maioria dos casos pela ausência de sintomatologia clínica que possa ser percebida pelos proprietários, dessa maneira o diagnóstico ocorre muitas vezes de forma incidental durante OSH, necropsia ou celiotomia exploratória. Este artigo descreve o achado incidental de agenesia ovariana unilateral direita em gata SRD submetida a OSH em programa de castração solidária. Na ocasião, não foram realizados exames complementares pré-cirúrgicos, estando a avaliação do animal restrita apenas a exame físico geral e palpação abdominal. A abordagem foi realizada por meio de acesso mediano ventral. Após a exposição do corno uterino esquerdo foi constatada inexistência do ovário esquerdo, que foi confirmada mediante palpação cranial do complexo arteriovenoso ovariano (CAVO) até a superfície renal. Não houveram dificuldades na realização das manobras de hemostasia, no entanto, a ausência de exames de imagem pode aumentar o risco cirúrgico, sobretudo para profissionais ou estudantes inexperientes. Apesar de ser uma condição de simples resolução cirúrgica, deve-se evitar demasiada e brusca tração do CAVO devido ao risco de complicações decorrentes de sua ruptura.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of public school students of Teresina (PI, Brazil) about Responsible Pet Guard and some Zoonoses. The research was conducted through questionnaires, and their analysis revealed that most students have a pet and know what is responsible ownership. However, the most do not know what zoonosis is. Television was the main source of information, therefore it is suggested that this means of communication be used more intensively to disseminate responsible ownership, animal welfare and Zoonoses. Most students reported that the topic Zoonoses was never addressed in school, demonstrating that the subject should be more discussed. Vaccination is the best known practice of Responsible ownership. The deworming is practiced by 51.82% of the interviewees and castration was cited by 30.36%. Most students reported that that pets only have access to the street accompanied, but 32.05% have stated that their pet has access to the street. This conduct can lead to traffic accidents, injuries from fights with other dogs, bites of people, spread of zoonoses and other problems. Nearly half of the students claimed that their family had abandoned a pet, mainly because of financial difficulties to treat diseases presented by the animal. The main Zoonosis recognized by the students was rabies. Approximately 80% do not recognize Visceral Leishmaniasis and toxoplasmosis as Zoonoses. It was concluded that public school students of Teresina have little knowledge about the Responsible ownership and on Zoonoses.

Purpose To evaluate hemostasis of the ovarian arteriovenous complex (OAVC) in relation to surgical time, practicality and feasibility in three ovariohysterectomy (OH) techniques for queens. Methods The experiment was performed on 21 female cats aged between six months and seven years, randomly arranged into three groups in a completely randomized design. Group one was spayed using the conventional three-clamp technique, group two using the OAVC knotting technique, and group three using the ovarian pedicle rotation technique. The student’s t-test and Tukey’s test were used to compare the mean surgical times. Results The conventional technique, which uses thread wires, was more laborious and required longer execution time compared to the other two techniques. The OAVC knotting technique was the fastest and had the least blood loss. Conclusions The use of techniques that do not use synthetic materials for OAVC hemostasis was proven to be appropriate in castration projects, provided that the surgical team has sufficient training.

É importante que se obtenha informações sobre tutores de cadelas portadoras de tumor de mama, pois o tutor precisa cuidar do animal principalmente no pós-operatório já que o tratamento é mastectomia. Foram entrevistados 11 tutores de cadelas submetidas à mastectomia. A maioria dos entrevistados tem ensino médio e superior, morando em casa própria com renda de um a cinco salários mínimos. Apenas uma pessoa disse que não sabia que cadelas podem ter câncer de mama. Entretanto, a maioria não sabe como prevenir o câncer de mama em cadelas, demonstrando que são necessárias campanhas educacionais sobre a doença para tutores de cadelas. A maneira mais frequente de aquisição do animal foi a adoção, o que demonstra o crescimento da posse responsável entre os tutores brasileiros. Três tutores afirmaram que aplicaram anticoncepcional nas suas cadelas várias vezes. Este fato é bastante preocupante porque tais fármacos possuem diversos efeitos colaterais adversos, inclusive tumor de mama. Oito tutores informaram que nunca haviam consultado um médico veterinário antes sobre o tumor, embora o mesmo fosse evidente. A maioria dos tutores só procurou ajuda para a cadela porque a participação no projeto era gratuita. Dificuldades financeiras é um dos principais motivos para que os tutores retardem as consultas. Entretanto, quando questionados por qual motivo as cadelas não tinham sido tratadas antes, nenhum tutor citou dificuldades financeiras. Concluiu-se que alguns tumores de mama foram causados por aplicação de anticoncepcional e que o desconhecimento sobre a doença ainda é grande entre os tutores entrevistados.

The profiles of dog and cat tutors participating in a pet neutering campaign in Teresina (Piaui, Brazil) were evaluated using questionnaire surveys. The majority of participants were observed to be people with higher levels of educational attainment who mainly decided to neuter their animals to avoid unwanted pets, prevent access to the street, and prevent disease. There was no early neutering, which is desirable for disease prevention. The majority of participants were female, with more cats than dogs represented. It was concluded that the level of education of owners is a determinant in the health and welfare of their pets, demonstrating the need for educational campaigns.

Sapajus libidinosus is a species of primates, popularly known as capuchin monkey. The oral cavity of the monkeys may have pathogenic microbiota for human. Therefore, the study of the microbiota of these species is of great interest in unique health. The objective of the present article was to carry out a survey of the oral microbiota of Sapajus libidinosus, kept in captivity, in the Zoobotanical Park of Teresina (PI, Brazil). Ten chemically immobilized primates were used. Samples were collected from the oral mucosa along the maxillary muco-gingival transition, and these samples were sent to culture and microbiological identification. Most of the microorganisms found were Gram negative and E.coli was the most frequent, followed by Enterobacter spp, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Citrobacter spp.,Morganella morganii, as well as Gram positive bacteria of the type Staphylococcus spp. The data obtained demonstrated the presence of bacterial strains with potential risk of transmission to other animals kept in the park as well as humans in contact with these animals. Sapajus libidinosus es una especie de primate conocido popularmente como mono capuchino. La cavidad bucal de los monos puede ser patógena para los humanos. Por tanto, el estudio de la microbiota de estas especies es de gran interés en la salud única. El objetivo del presente artículo es realizar un levantamiento de la microbiota oral de la especie Sapajus libidinosus, mantenidos en cautiverio, en el parque Zoobotánico de Teresina. Se utilizaron 10 primates inmovilizados químicamente. Las muestras fueron recolectadas de la mucosa oral junto a la transición muco-gingival maxilar de los animales y encaminados para cultivo e identificación microbiológica. La mayoría de los microorganismos encontrados fueron Gram negativos, siendo E. coli fue la más frecuente, seguida de Enterobacter spp, acompañado por Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Citrobacter spp., Morganella morganii, así como bacterias Gram positivas del tipo Staphylococcus spp. Los datos obtenidos demostraron la presencia de cepas bacterianas con riesgo potencial de transmisión a otros animales mantenidos en el parque y también a humanos en contacto con estos animales. Sapajus libidinosus é uma espécie de primata popularmente conhecido como macaco prego. A cavidade oral de macacos pode ser patogênica para o ser humano. Portanto o estudo da microbiota destas espécies é de grande interesse em sáude única. O objetivo do presente artigo foi realizar um levantamento da microbiota oral da espécie Sapajus libidinosus, mantidos em cativeiro, no parque Zoobotânico de Teresina. Foram utilizados 10 primatas imobilizados quimicamente. As amostras foram colhidas da mucosa oral junto à transição muco-gengival maxilar dos animais e encaminhadas para cultivo e identificação microbiológica. A maior parte dos microrganismos encontrados foram Gram negativos sendo que a E. coli foi a mais freqüente, seguido por Enterobacter spp, acompanhado por Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Citrobacter spp., Morganella morganii, bem como bactérias Gram positivas do tipo Staphylococcus spp. Os dados obtidos demonstraram a presença de cepas bacterianas com potencial risco de transmissão para outros animais mantidos no parque e também para humanos em contato com esses animais.

One herein reports a successful case of celiotomy by plastrotomy for removal of foreign bodies in yellow-footed tortoise (Geochelone denticulata). The animal was treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Piaui, with appetite loss, regurgitation, constipation, lethargy, reluctance to walk and slightly reddish ocular mucous membranes. Radiographic examination was performed, confirming the presence of foreign bodies in the stomach. The tortoise underwent celiotomy by plastrotomy for the removal of the foreign bodies. The opening of the plastron was performed through the abdominal shields, with the aid of a circular mini grinding saw. One performed an incision in the midline between the two abdominal veins to access the abdominal cavity. A gastrotomy for removal of the foreign bodies (nails, toothpicks, stones, pieces of plastic, glass and crockery pieces) was performed after the location of the stomach. The surgery was successful and confirmed with radiographic evaluation in the immediate postoperative period. The celiotomy by plastrotomy for removal of foreign bodies in that animal proved to be a viable, very important and safe technique to the survival of chelonians.

Background: To reduce morbidity and mortality associated with anesthetic procedures in cats, it is important to carry out a thorough pre-anesthetic evaluation. The surgical risk depends on several factors related to the patient, the surgical procedure, and the anesthetic used. Evaluation of perioperative mortality and the identification of the main factors of death reduce mortality rates. This research was conducted to evaluate and obtain the classification of physical status and anesthetic risk in cats submitted for surgical procedures.Materials, Methods & Results: Ninety-two cats were classified into anesthetic categories according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification. The group consisted of 62 females (67.39%) and 30 males (32.61%). In the ASA classification, the emergency qualifier was added, resulting in 52.17% (48/92) of the total number of surgeries being considered as emergencies. The ASA I patients constituted the majority of the study sample (33.69%, 31/92). There were no deaths among ASA I patients. The ASA II patients represented 20.65% (19/92), with surgeries divided into non-emergency (42.10%, 8/19) and emergency (57.89%, 11/19). All ASA II patients had mild localized infections, and there were no deaths. ASA III patients constituted 28.26% (26/92) of the study sample and had moderate systemic alterations. Surgeries in this group were also classified as emergency (24/26, 92.30%) or non-emergency (2/26, 7.69%). There was one postoperative death in this group. The ASA IV patients represented 17.39% (16/92) of the study sample. The emergency surgeries (81.25%, 13/16) had a greater percentage than the elective surgeries. In this group, two deaths occurring in the immediate postoperative period. The overall mortality for the entire study sample was 3.26% (3/92).Discussion: The majority of the surgeries were emergency surgeries, indicating that, in the feline specie, in the service analyzed, most owners seek medical treatment under these conditions. In these situations, there is a need for rapid intervention since there is a high probability of immediate adverse consequences with the added risk of death. The results obtained from the ASA I patients are expected in animals of this classification, whose prognosis is considered excellent. The patients ASA II included six patients with obstructive lower urinary tract disease (OLUTD) that progressed to ASA III and IV, proving that patients with OLUTD need urgent attention. Some animals ASA III entered this classification because they presented anemia. These clinical sign was considered of great importance since the reduction of circulating red blood cells reduces tissue oxygenation, thereby increasing surgical risk due to hypovolemic shock. The one death in the ASA III group occurred in the postoperative period, and necropsy indicated septicemia, which has a high mortality rate. ASA IV patients were placed in this category due to serious diseases such as neoplasms accompanied by secondary infection, urolithiasis with post-renal azotemia, OLUTD with azotemia, and pyometra. All deaths in the ASA IV group occurred in the immediate postoperative period. Recent data suggest that the postoperative period is the period associated with the highest risk of mortality. This may have been a reason for these deaths, along with the fact that all these patients were emergency patients, because in such procedures, the risk of death is much higher in patients undergoing emergency surgeries than in those undergoing elective surgeries. Starting by the patients classified as ASA grade III, the mortality was higher, as well as in cases of emergency. The overall mortality rate was high, with a higher risk during the immediate postoperative period. It is recommended that felines be carefully monitored postoperatively to reduce mortality rates.
