Materials with enhanced wear resistance are constantly in high demand. Nickel-based self-fluxing materials deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) have feasible wear resistance performance. This study aimed to evaluate the results of a nickel-based self-fluxing alloy coating deposited on AISI 4340 steel substrate using APS. Additionally, the temperature at which the remelting process achieved optimal results was investigated. The AISI 4340 steel substrate samples were coated with a self-fluxing NiCrBSiCFe powder by APS. The post-coating remelting process was performed in a controlled atmosphere tube furnace at 900, 1000, and 1100 °C. Microstructural analysis was carried out by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) before and after remelting. The estimated porosity of the as-sprayed sample was 3.28%, while the remelted coating sample at 1100 °C had only 0.22% porosity. Furthermore, a microhardness measurement was conducted, and the best condition yielded an average value of 750 HV0.5. Tribological tests were performed to evaluate the coefficient of friction and wear rates, revealing that at 1100 °C, the as-sprayed coating had a wear rate of 9.16 × 10−5 [mm3/(N*m] and the remelted coating had 4.106 × 10−5 [mm3/(N*m]. The wear-loss volume was determined to be 14.1 mm3 for the as-sprayed coating sample and 3.6 mm3 for the remelted coating at 1100 °C.

Resole resins have many applications, especially for foam production. However, the use of phenol, a key ingredient in resoles, has serious environmental and economic disadvantages. In this work, lignin extracted from pine wood using a “green” solvent, levulinic acid, was used to partially replace the non-sustainable phenol. The physicochemical properties of this novel resin were compared with resins composed of different types of commercial lignins. All resins were optimized to keep their free formaldehyde content below 1 wt%, by carefully adjusting the pH of the mixture. Substitution of phenol with lignin generally increases the viscosity of the resins, which is further increased with the lignin mass fraction. The addition of lignin decreases the kinetics of gelification of the resin. The type and amount of lignin also affect the thermal stability of the resins. It was possible to obtain resins with higher thermal stability than the standard phenol-formaldehyde resins without lignin. This work provides new insights regarding the development of lignin-based resoles as a very promising sustainable alternative to petrol-based resins.

Abstract The paper focuses on the two-way relay channel (TWRC) and the multi-way wireless network with three terminals, where all three want to exchange or share data and have to do that with the help of a relay. This paper shows how it is possible to significantly decrease the number of time slots required to exchange messages between terminals in networks based on time-division multiple access (TDMA), by taking into consideration new techniques at the physical (PHY) layer. The paper considers a PHY layer where physical-layer network coding (PLNC), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and in-band “full-duplex” (IBFD) with loopback interference cancellation are all integrated, so that it is possible to significantly increase the overall throughput of the network. This is entirely attained by transferring the burden from the time domain to the spatial domain, via spatial multiplexing and by simultaneously resorting to non-orthogonal multiple access, which is the consequence of using both PLCN and IBFD. For the TWRC, it is shown that, if a massive MIMO relay is used, a simple lattice-based PLNC can be directly applied and, with typical IBFD interference cancellation amounts, a TWRC can effectively use only one time slot instead of the four needed when adopting the traditional TDMA exchange. In the case of the Y-network (i.e., with three terminals), a technique is presented that allows all the information exchange between terminals to be cut from the six time slots required in TDMA to only one time slot, provided that the information packets are not too short. The error performance of these systems is measured by means of simulation using MIMO Rayleigh fading channels.

S100B is an astrocytic extracellular Ca2+-binding protein implicated in Alzheimer’s disease, whose role as a holdase-type chaperone delaying Aβ42 aggregation and toxicity was recently uncovered. Here, we employ computational biology approaches to dissect the structural details and dynamics of the interaction between S100B and Aβ42. Driven by previous structural data, we used the Aβ25–35 segment, which recapitulates key aspects of S100B activity, as a starting guide for the analysis. We used Haddock to establish a preferred binding mode, which was studied with the full length Aβ using long (1 μs) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the structural dynamics and obtain representative interaction complexes. From the analysis, Aβ-Lys28 emerged as a key candidate for stabilizing interactions with the S100B binding cleft, in particular involving a triad composed of Met79, Thr82 and Glu86. Binding constant calculations concluded that coulombic interactions, presumably implicating the Lys28(Aβ)/Glu86(S100B) pair, are very relevant for the holdase-type chaperone activity. To confirm this experimentally, we examined the inhibitory effect of S100B over Aβ aggregation at high ionic strength. In agreement with the computational predictions, we observed that electrostatic perturbation of the Aβ-S100B interaction decreases anti-aggregation activity. Altogether, these findings unveil features relevant in the definition of selectivity of the S100B chaperone, with implications in Alzheimer’s disease.

The dissolution and extraction of lignin from biomass represents a great challenge due to the complex structure of this natural phenolic biopolymer. In this work, several surfactants (i.e., non-ionic, anionic, and cationic) were used as additives to enhance the dissolution efficiency of model lignin (kraft) and to boost lignin extraction from pine sawdust residues. To the best of our knowledge, cationic surfactants have never been systematically used for lignin dissolution. It was found that ca. 20 wt.% of kraft lignin is completely solubilized using 1 mol L−1 octyltrimethylammonium bromide aqueous solution. A remarkable dissolution efficiency was also obtained using 0.5 mol L−1 polysorbate 20. Furthermore, all surfactants used increased the lignin extraction with formic acid, even at low concentrations, such as 0.01 and 0.1 mol L−1. Higher concentrations of cationic surfactants improve the extraction yield but the purity of extracted lignin decreases.

Food contamination due to the presence of microorganisms is a serious problem. New food preservation systems are being studied to kill or inhibit spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms that contaminate food and reduce the shelf life of products. Chitosan films with potential application to food preservation have witnessed great developments during the last years. Chitosan is a cationic polysaccharide with the ability to form films and possess antimicrobial properties. It is water-insoluble but can be dissolved in acidic solutions. In the present work, three different acids (acetic, lactic and citric) were used in chitosan dissolution and both, the resultant solutions and formed films were characterized. It was observed that chitosan water-acetic acid systems show the highest antimicrobial activity due to the highest chitosan charge density, compared to the mixtures with lactic and citric acid. This system showed also the higher solution viscosity compared to the other systems. Chitosan–acetic acid films were also the ones presenting better mechanical properties; this can be attributed to the fact that lactic and citric acids remain in the films, changing their properties, which does not happen with acetic acid. Films produced from chitosan dissolved in water/acetic acid system are resistant, while very fragile but elastic films are formed when lactic acid is used. It was demonstrated that a good selection of the type of acid not only facilitates the dissolution of chitosan but also plays a key role in the properties of the formed solutions and films.

Catanionic vesicles are emerging interesting structures for bioapplications. They self-generate by a pairing of oppositely charged ionic surfactants that assemble into hollow structures. Specifically, the anionic-cationic surfactant pair assumes a double-tailed zwitterionic behavior. In this work, the multilamellar-to-unilamellar thermal transition of several mixed aqueous systems, with a slight excess of the anionic one, were investigated. Interestingly, it was found that the anionic counterion underwent a dissociation as a consequence of a temperature increase, leading to the mentioned thermal transition. The present work proposed the spectroscopic techniques, specifically multinuclear NMR and PGSTE (pulsed gradient stimulated echo), as a key tool to study such systems, with high accuracy and effectiveness, while requiring a small amount of the sample. The results presented herein evidence encouraging perspectives, forecasting the application of the studied vesicular nanoreservoirs, for e.g., drug delivery.

The gelation of cellulose in alkali solutions is quite relevant, but still a poorly understood process. Moreover, the role of certain additives, such as urea, is not consensual among the community. Therefore, in this work, an unusual set of characterization methods for cellulose solutions, such as cryo-transmission electronic microscopy (cryo-TEM), polarization transfer solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (PTssNMR) and diffusion wave spectroscopy (DWS) were employed to study the role of urea on the dissolution and gelation processes of cellulose in aqueous alkali. Cryo-TEM reveals that the addition of urea generally reduces the presence of undissolved cellulose fibrils in solution. These results are consistent with PTssNMR data, which show the reduction and in some cases the absence of crystalline portions of cellulose in solution, suggesting a pronounced positive effect of the urea on the dissolution efficiency of cellulose. Both conventional mechanical macrorheology and microrheology (DWS) indicate a significant delay of gelation induced by urea, being absent until ca. 60 °C for a system containing 5 wt % cellulose, while a system without urea gels at a lower temperature. For higher cellulose concentrations, the samples containing urea form gels even at room temperature. It is argued that since urea facilitates cellulose dissolution, the high entanglement of the cellulose chains in solution (above the critical concentration, C*) results in a strong three-dimensional network.

This article displays how the photometry laboratory of the Portuguese Institute for Quality complies with the measurement traceability and method validation, the technical requirements 5.4 and 5.6 of the ISO/IEC 17025. After the presentation of the existing means and the way the metrological traceability is obtained, a short introduction to the internal validation of the measurement method is displayed for the luminous intensity, the illuminance and the illuminance responsivity.

One of the seven base units of the International System of Units (SI), the candela, which is the unit of the luminous intensity, and its derived units are physiological units. The effect of the optical radiation on human beings is taken into account by introducing a weighting factor, the luminous efficiency, to the definition of radiant quantity of interest. Some SI physiological units are frequently used in other metrological domains, such as ionizing radiation, photochemical and biological activities, acoustics and photobiology. This communication is intended to present some principles underlying the definitions of physiological quantities and units associated to these metrological fields.

This study focussed on the development of fully biodegradable composites based on polybutylene succinate (PBS) in combination with raw materials from different processing stages of the pulp and paper industry. Sulfite pulp (SP), kraft pulp (KP) and screened sludge residue (SL) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) were investigated as reinforcing fibres contributing to a circular economy. We report a comparative study of the physicochemical properties and mechanical performance of PBS composites reinforced with these cellulosic raw fibres and commercial pure microcrystalline cellulose (MC). The composites were characterised in tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, water absorption and wettability. The incorporation of the fibres into the polymer matrix was also investigated using torque rheometry. Critical concentrations were obtained with maximum incorporation in the range of 15–20 wt% for SP/KP and 25–30 wt% for SL. SP and KP composites showed at least as good physicochemical and mechanical properties as MC at the concentrations studied (0–20 wt%). SP-composites showed the highest tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. It was shown that these fibres from the pulp and paper industry can be used as reinforcement for PBS matrices without additional chemical purification and provide a valuable alternative to commercial microcrystalline cellulose. Abstract Background 211At-radiopharmaceuticals are currently the subject of growing studies for targeted alpha therapy of cancers, which leads to the widening of the scope of the targeting vectors, from small molecules to peptides and proteins. This has prompted, during the past decade, to a renewed interest in developing novel 211At-labelling approaches and novel prosthetic groups to address the diverse scenarios and to reach improved efficiency and robustness of procedures as well as an appropriate in vivo stability of the label. Main body Translated from the well-known (radio)iodine chemistry, the long preferred electrophilic astatodemetallation using trialkylaryltin precursors is now complemented by new approaches using electrophilic or nucleophilic At. Alternatives to the astatoaryl moiety have been proposed to improve labelling stability, and the range of prosthetic groups available to label proteins has expanded. Conclusion In this report, we cover the evolution of radiolabelling chemistry, from the initial strategies developed in the late 1970’s to the most recent findings.
