This research had the objective of analyzing the anthropometric and somatotypic characteristics in the different maturational stages of scholars from Militar School of João Pessoa-PB. A transversal and comparative descriptive methodology was used, in that the somatotype was identified through Heath-Carter's protocol, the calculations of Slauther determined the percentile of body fat and the groups were classified, according to Tanner, respectively, in: PI (n=36); PII (n=28); PIII (n=31); PIV (n=39) and PV (n=63). The test of Kolmogorov-Smirnov identified the normality of the data. The significant differences were investigated with the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) One Way and the post hoc test of Sheffe. These procedures were considered statistically significant at p<0.05. It is ended that the anthropometric and somatotypic measures suffered significant influences of the sexual maturation, phase in that the meso-endomorphic component presented larger percentile of fat, being the balanced mesomorphic struture classified with lower relative fat index. Background: Diabetes carries an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and thromboembolic events. Upon endothelial dysfunction, platelets bind to endothelial cells to precipitate thrombus formation; however, it is unclear which surface proteins regulate platelet-endothelium interaction. We and others have shown that peri/epicellular protein disulfide isomerase A1 (pecPDI) influences the adhesion and migration of vascular cells., Objectives: We investigated whether pecPDI regulates adhesion-related molecules on the surface of endothelial cells and platelets that influence the binding of these cells in hyperglycemia., Methods: Immunofluorescence was used to assess platelet-endothelium interaction in vitro, cytoskeleton reorganization, and focal adhesions. Hydrogen peroxide production was assessed via Amplex Red assays (ThermoFisher Scientific). Cell biophysics was assessed using atomic force microscopy. Secreted proteins of interest were identified through proteomics (secretomics), and targets were knocked down using small interfering RNA. Protein disulfide isomerase A1 (PDI) contribution was assessed using whole-cell PDI or pecPDI inhibitors or small interfering RNA., Results: Platelets of healthy donors adhered more onto hyperglycemic human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Endothelial, but not platelet, pecPDI regulated this effect. Hyperglycemic HUVECs showed marked cytoskeleton reorganization, increased H 2 O 2 production, and elongated focal adhesions. Indeed, hyperglycemic HUVECs were stiffer compared with normoglycemic cells. PDI and pecPDI inhibition reversed the abovementioned processes in hyperglycemic cells. A secretomics analysis revealed 8 proteins secreted in a PDI-dependent manner by hyperglycemic cells. This study characterized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in oil pellets stranded at Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, equatorial Atlantic. It also characterized PAHs dissolved/dispersed in seawater (i.e. water accommodated fraction - WAF) and used them for investigating toxic effects on embryos of the snapping shrimp Alpheus estuariensis. In the experiment, WAF was diluted to six concentrations - 0 %, 20 %, 40 %, 60 %, 80 % and 100 %. A total of 28 embryonated eggs were exposed to each dilution for 7 days under controlled conditions. Daily, four embryos from each treatment were removed for a detailed examination. Among the 16 priority PAHs, 12 of them were detected in the samples. There was a statistically significant correlation concerning embryo mortality over time across all dilutions, except for the control (0 % WAF). It can be concluded that embryo development is affected by increasing WAF concentration and exposure time. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a disease characterized by high blood glucose levels, known as hyperglycemia. Diabetes represents a risk factor for the development of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD), one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases worldwide, which leads to progressive mental, behavioral, and functional decline, affecting many brain structures, especially the hippocampus. Here, we aim to characterize the ultrastructural, nanomechanical, and vibrational changes in hyperglycemic hippocampal tissue using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. DM was induced in rats by streptozotocin injection (type 1) or dietary intervention (type 2). Cryosections of the hippocampus were prepared and analyzed on an MM8 AFM (Bruker) in Peak Force Quantitative Nanomechanics mode, performing 25 μm 2 scans in 9 regions of 3 samples from each group. Ultrastructural and nanomechanical data such as surface roughness, area, volume, Young's modulus, and adhesion were evaluated. The hippocampal samples were also analyzed on a T64000 Spectrometer (Horiba), using a laser λ = 632.8 nm, and for each sample, four spectra were obtained in different regions. AFM analyses show changes on the ultrastructural scale since diabetic animals had hippocampal tissue with greater roughness and volume. Meanwhile, diabetic tissues had decreased adhesion and Young's modulus compared to control tissues. These were corroboratedby Raman data that shows changes in the molecular composition of diabetic tissues. The individual spectra show that the most significant changes are in the amide, cholesterol, and lipid bands. Rotator cuff tear is a common source of pain and disfunction in shoulder, with prevalence increasing with age. Nonsurgical treatment is adequate for many patients; however, for those for whom surgical treatment is indicated, rotator cuff repair provides reliable pain relief and good functional results. However, massive and irreparable tears due to tear size, tendon retraction, muscle atrophy, fatty infiltration are a significant challenge for surgeons. Whenever irreparable tears coexist with cartilage degeneration/arthritis (rotator cuff arthropathy), the indication of reverse shoulder arthroplasty is the golden standard. However, in young patients without arthritis, joint preserving procedures, from debridement to muscle transfers, are preferred. Objective: Understand and explore the childbirth experiences of pregnant women living with HIV (PWLWHIV). With the advent of several measures to decrease the intrapartum HIV infection and a strong emphasis on the humanization of childbirth, there is a growing focus on providing positive childbirth experiences for pregnant women. Indeed, a positive childbirth experience is even more important in the group of pregnant women living with HIV (PWLWHIV) as it plays a pivotal role in enhancing the mother's adherence to her postpartum treatment and the newborn's engagement in Infectious Disease services., Methodology: A scoping review was conducted. Searches were performed on databases, such as MEDLINE, PUBMED, WEB OF SCIENCE and Cochrane Library, using the following keywords: childbirth, birth, parturition, HIV, humaniz*, perceived safety, experience, maternal satisfaction, healthcare professional and midwi*. Articles meeting pre-established criteria were selected within the timeframe of 2013 to 2023 for inclusion in the review., Results: Out of a total of 2,340,391 articles, 4 were chosen based on our defined criteria. Three primary themes emerged from the selected articles: the assessment of childbirth experience quality, vulnerability and autonomy., Conclusions: The four studies identified had a small sample size and were not adequately conducted with a specific focus on studying the childbirth experience of pregnant women living with HIV (PWLWHIV). This scoping review revealed a gap in the existing literature, indicating a need for further research and clarification in the identified area.

Introduction: Wildfires and deforestation potentially have direct effects on multiple health outcomes as well as indirect consequences for climate change. Tropical rainforest areas are characterised by high rainfall, humidity and temperature, and they are predominantly found in low-income and middle-income countries. This study aims to synthesise the methods, data and health outcomes reported in scientific papers on wildfires and deforestation in these locations., Methods and Analysis: We will carry out a scoping review according to the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI) manual for scoping reviews and the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley, and Levac et al . The search for articles was performed on 18 August 2023, in 16 electronic databases using Medical Subject Headings terms and adaptations for each database from database inception. The search for local studies will be complemented by the manual search in the list of references of the studies selected to compose this review. We screened studies written in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. We included quantitative studies assessing any human disease outcome, hospitalisation and vital statistics in regions of tropical rainforest. We exclude qualitative studies and quantitative studies whose outcomes do not cover those of interest. The text screening was done by two independent reviewers. Subsequently, we will tabulate the data by the origin of the data source used, the methods and the main findings on health impacts of the extracted data. The results will provide descriptive statistics, along with visual representations in diagrams and tables, complemented by narrative summaries as detailed in the JBI guidelines., Ethics and Dissemination: The study does not require an ethical review as it is meta-research and uses published, deidentified secondary data sources. In 2019 and 2020, we investigated the individual and combined effects of two biofertilizers (manure tea and bioinoculant) and one humic acid (HA) product on cannabis biochemical and physiological parameters and soil CO 2 evolution under outdoor conditions. Our hypothesis was that HA would increase the microbial activity in the biofertilizers and synergy of both compounds would promote better plant performance and stimulate soil microbial activity. In 2020, the individual and combined application of biofertilizers and HA increased cannabis height, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic efficiency, aboveground biomass, and bucked biomass by 105, 52, 43, 122, and 117%, respectively. Impacts were greater under suboptimal growing conditions caused by planting delay experienced in 2020. In 2019, planting date occurred in-between the most favorable period and chlorophyll content and photosynthetic efficiency were the only parameters influenced by the application of biostimulants. The discrepancies between the two growing seasons reinforce the evidence of other studies that biostimulants efficacy is maximized under stress conditions. This study could not conclusively confirm that the combined use of biofertilizer + HA is a superior practice since affected plant parameters did not differ from application of the compounds singly. Similarly, only one biofertilizer + HA treatment increased soil microbial activity. Importance: Women living in income-segregated areas are less likely to receive adequate breast cancer care and access community resources, which may heighten breast cancer mortality risk., Objective: To investigate the association between income segregation and breast cancer mortality and whether this association is attenuated by receipt of the Bolsa Família program (BFP), the world's largest conditional cash-transfer program., Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study was conducted using data from the 100 Million Brazilian Cohort, which were linked with nationwide mortality registries (2004-2015). Data were analyzed from December 2021 to June 2023. Study participants were women aged 18 to 100 years., Exposure: Women's income segregation (high, medium, or low) at the municipality level was obtained using income data from the 2010 Brazilian census and assessed using dissimilarity index values in tertiles (low [0.01-0.25], medium [0.26-0.32], and high [0.33-0.73])., Main Outcomes and Measures: The main outcome was breast cancer mortality. Mortality rate ratios (MRRs) for the association of segregation with breast cancer deaths were estimated using Poisson regression adjusted for age, race, education, municipality area size, population density, area of residence (rural or urban), and year of enrollment. Multiplicative interactions of segregation and BFP receipt (yes or no) in the association with mortality (2004-2015) were assessed., Results: Data on 21 680 930 women (mean [SD] age, 36.1 [15.3] years) were analyzed. Breast cancer mortality was greater among women living in municipalities with high (adjusted MRR [aMRR], 1.18; 95% CI, 1.13-1.24) and medium (aMRR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.03-1.12) compared with low segregation. Women who did not receive BFP had higher breast cancer mortality than BFP recipients (aMRR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.12-1.22). By BFP strata, women who did not receive BFP and lived in municipalities with high income segregation had a 24% greater risk of death from breast cancer compared with those living in municipalities with low income segregation (aMRR, 1.24: 95% CI, 1.14-1.34); women who received BFP and were living in areas with high income segregation had a 13% higher risk of death from breast cancer compared with those living in municipalities with low income segregation (aMRR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.07-1.19; P for interaction = .008). Stratified by the amount of time receiving the benefit, segregation (high vs low) was associated with an increase in mortality risk for women receiving BFP for less time but not for those receiving it for more time (<4 years: aMRR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.07-1.27; 4-11 years: aMRR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.00-1.17; P for interaction <.001)., Conclusions and Relevance: These findings suggest that place-based inequities in breast cancer mortality associated with income segregation may be mitigated with BFP receipt, possibly via improved income and access to preventive cancer care services among women, which may be associated with early detection and treatment and ultimately reduced mortality.

This paper examines scaling behaviors of urban landscape and street design metrics with respect to city population in Latin America. We used data from the SALURBAL project, which has compiled and harmonized data on health, social, and built environment for 371 Latin American cities above 100,000 inhabitants. These metrics included total urbanized area, effective mesh size, area in km2 and number of streets. We obtained scaling relations by regressing log(metric) on log (city population). The results show an overall sub-linear scaling behavior of most variables, indicating a relatively lower value of each variable in larger cities. We also explored the potential influence of colonization on the current built environment, by analyzing cities colonized by Portuguese (Brazilian cities) or Spaniards (Other cities in Latin America) separately. Activated zinc biochar (ZnBC) and humic acid (HA) were used as coating agents in a soluble monoammonium phosphate (MAP) to modify phosphorus (P) use efficiency by altering adsorption/desorption kinetics between the granule region and the soil. The coated treatments MAPZnBC and MAPHA were compared with MAP through P diffusivity, kinetics, and agronomic evaluation. Eucalyptus sawdust was used as biomass for biochar synthesis, and a pre-pyrolysis treatment with zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) was applied. The P diffusivity was evaluated in the fertosphere zone. Adsorption and desorption potential of the ZnBC compared with control biochar (BC) was evaluated separately. Desorption kinetics of P from soil was assessed after incubation with MAPZnBC and MAPHA. The shoot dry matter yield (SDM), P uptake, and P use efficiency (PUE) were evaluated with a pot experiment in a clay Oxisol sown with maize and soybeans as successive plant trials, under glasshouse conditions. Surface area values of 940 and 305 m 2  g -1 combined with adsorption capacities of 106 and 53 mg P g -1 for ZnBC and BC, respectively, confirm the increased capacity of activated biochar to adsorb P. Both MAPZnBC and MAPHA decreased P diffusivity compared to MAP after 20 days of incubation. Moreover, MAPZnBC and MAPHA presented 20% and 34% more water-soluble phosphorus recovery. MAPZnBC expressed an increase in SDM while MAPHA highlighted P uptake and PUE compared with MAP. Pediatric oncology patients are usually immunosuppressed due to factors such as the neoplasm and its treatment, making them more susceptible to infections. This article aims to determine the infection profile of pediatric oncology patients admitted to an oncology reference hospital in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. A retrospective and cross-sectional study was conducted, collecting data from patients hospitalized due to infection in a pediatric oncology unit exclusively for the Brazilian public health system, spanning from 2018 to 2021. A total of 168 episodes of infections were identified in 96 patients, resulting in 157 hospitalizations. Among the patients with infections, 62.4% had hematological malignancies, and out of these cases, 74.6% specifically had Acute Lymphoid Leukemia. The Escherichia coli (31.9%) was the most prevalent microorganism isolated from the samples. Multidrug-resistant microorganisms accounted for 52% of all identified microorganisms. Fluoroquinolones and beta-lactam were the most prevalent antibiotic classes in the analyzed antibiograms. Factors such as Sex, type of cancer, chemotherapy in the last 30 days, were found to be associated with the occurrence of infection (p < 0.05). Three new species of isopod crustaceans of the family Cirolanidae-Dolicholana ivanyae spec. nov., Natatolana hadassae spec. nov. and Politolana cleoniceae spec. nov.-are described from the shallow waters of the Brazilian bathyal. The specimens were collected from the shallow bathyal zone of the Potiguar Basin, off the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, from Pernambuco and Bahia, and the Campos Basin, off Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states. Dolicholana ivanyae spec. nov. can be distinguished from its congeners by the subrectangular shape of the head, its very long frontal lamina, which surpasses article 2 of the peduncle of antenna 1, and its densely setose pereopod 7. Natatolana hadassae spec. nov. is unique due to the subacute posteroventral angle of epimeron 4, ischial pereopod 3 as produced as those of pereopods 1 and 2, and the distal margin of the pleotelson with 10 robust distal setae. Politolana cleoniceae spec. nov. differs from its congeners based on the combination of the following traits: the pereon-pleon articulation is tight, with pleonite 1 clearly visible, and not covered completely by pereonite 7, while the pleon (in the dorsal-ventral view) is arched in a uniform sequence with the pereon, and the uropodal endopod is shorter than the exopod. In addition to these findings, the known geographical distribution of Dolicholana brucei, which was described recently from Brazil, is extended southward to include Bahia, Brazil. This study increases the number of cirolanid species recorded from Brazilian waters to 23.

In this work, we demonstrate refractive index (RI) sensors based on the cascade of hetero-core structures using multimode and no-core optical fibers in sequence. The sensor device is engineered to have resonances at different wavelengths using different sensing region lengths. The device fabrication involves simple fiber cleaving and fusion splicing. For the experiments, the two sensor regions are exposed to liquids with different RIs. For the hetero-core fiber insertion length of 45 mm, the transmission valley is centered at 1082.5 nm with 15.1 nm full width at half-maximum (FWHM) for an external medium RI of 1.3370. Additionally, it shifts 4.1 nm towards longer wavelengths as the RI of the external medium increases to 1.3840. For the 30 mm long hetero-core structure, the valley is centered at 1599.7 nm with 23.3 nm FWHM for an external medium RI of 1.3370, which shifts 7.4 nm as the RI increases to 1.3840. The sensor sensitivities are up to -476 d B / r e f r a c t i v e index unit (RIU) and 270 nm/RIU. The resolution of the devices is estimated to be 2×10 -5 R I U .

Trichopeltarion dextrum (Rathbun, 1898) is herein reported from the first time from Northern Brazil. The specimens were captured using the shrimp trawls during the REVIZEE-Score Program. Six specimens, being two males and four females, were examined. The material fits well with diagnostic characters of T. dextrum, but the males have the carapace almost as long as wide, while in the type material, is slightly longer the wide. This is the second species of the genus Trichopeltarion reported from Brazilian waters.

With the increase in cases of microcephaly caused by the Zika virus, the demand for special care and a better quality of life for the child and caregiver increased proportionally., Objective: This study aimed to analyze the burden on caregivers of children with congenital Zika syndrome associated with viral infections in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil using the Zarit Burden interview scale., Method: A quantitative study was conducted at the Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital, Recife City, State of Pernambuco, Brazil. By convenience sampling, 56 mothers, two grandmothers, and two caregivers were enrolled, all are female. Data were collected from July 2019 to January 2020. In the analysis, the percentage frequencies were calculated. The normality was identified using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and participant profiles were compared using Student's t -test and analysis of variance. In descriptive statistics, quantitative variables are described by the median and interquartile range and categorical variables by proportions using the Chi-square test., Results: In the comparative analysis, all factors evaluated were significant, except for the "gestational period in which the disease occurred" ( p  < 0.111). The significance of differences in all activities was evaluated. In the mean comparison test, only the factor "has a job" was significant ( p  < 0.043). When comparing the average of caregivers' responses to the categories of the Zarit burden interview scale, the highest level of burden was regarding the feeling that the child is dependent on the caregiver (3.62 points). Caregiver burden was classified as absence, light, moderate, and high., Conclusion: The consequences of contracting the Zika virus in the first trimester of pregnancy, lack of paid work, financial scarcity, full-time dedication to the child, and lack of time for themselves increase the burden on caregivers. Objectives: To translate to Brazilian Portuguese, culturally adapt and confirm the psychometric parameters of validity and reliability of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ-BR) in children., Methods: A sample of 314 typically developing children, 51% girls, mean age 7.12 years (SD = 2.04 years) were assessed, comprising 227 from São Paulo and 87 from the Amazon region. Translation, back translation, cultural adaptation, a pilot study and item review were carried out, yielding the final version of the CSHQ. Psychometric parameters were determined based on content validity coefficient (CVC), test-retest, internal consistency, evidence of convergent validity and internal structure., Results: The final CVC for the scale was 0.88. Intraclass correlation was 0.98 for the overall questionnaire and ranged from 0.88 to 0.98 for subscales. CSHQ-BR internal consistency was α = 0.81 for the CSHQ-BR total score (95% CI) and from 0.51 to 0.75 for subscales. Exploratory factor analysis suggested a novel 4-factor structure. A positive correlation was found between the CSHQ and the Questionnaire on Sleep Behavior. This study is aimed at evaluating C and N stocks in fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) in an area of bauxite mining under recovery with tree species. We have analyzed the long-term recovery of C and N stocks of organic matter fractions from five types of forest cover (Eucalyptus, Anadenanthera peregrina, mixed plantation of 16 native species, a mined area without vegetation cover as a control site, and a natural forest cover as a reference site). The total organic C (TOC) and N (TN) stocks and also organic matter fractions, particulate organic matter (POM), mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM), microbial biomass (MB), and labile C (LC), were determined, as well as the C/N ratio and the carbon management index (CMI). Although the stocks of TOC and LC, CMI, and MB did not differ between the types of forest cover in the 0-60 cm layer, they were lower than the values in the native forest. Forest cover increases the stocks of TOC, LC, MB, and CMI in the area of bauxite mining compared to the control site. In addition, we found that the TOC C and TN stocks and also SOM fractions (LC, C-MAOM, C-POM, N-MAOM, and N-POM) are positively correlated (r ≥ 0.71 for all cases) with volume of roots larger than 2 mm. A new species of Pleonexes from the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago, northeastern Brazil is described. Pleonexes lowryi sp. nov. is characterized by the slender mandible palp; the gnathopod 2 with large and rounded anterodistal lobe on the basis and strongly oblique palm; the pereopods 3-4 with slightly expanded basis; the uropod 1 peduncle with short and blunt spur; and the telson with subtriangular apex and small subdistal cusp on each side. In addition, based on the literature review, we provide new combinations of some species and a key to Pleonexes species in the world.

Socioeconomic factors have exacerbated the impact of COVID-19 worldwide. Brazil, already marked by significant economic inequalities, is one of the most affected countries, with one of the highest mortality rates. Understanding how inequality and income segregation contribute to excess mortality by COVID-19 in Brazilian cities is essential for designing public health policies to mitigate the impact of the disease. This paper aims to fill in this gap by analyzing the effect of income inequality and income segregation on COVID-19 mortality in large urban centers in Brazil. We compiled weekly COVID-19 mortality rates from March 2020 to February 2021 in a longitudinal ecological design, aggregating data at the city level for 152 Brazilian cities. Mortality rates from COVID-19 were compared across weeks, cities and states using mixed linear models. We estimated the associations between COVID-19 mortality rates with income inequality and income segregation using mixed negative binomial models including city and week-level random intercepts. We measured income inequality using the Gini index and income segregation using the dissimilarity index using data from the 2010 Brazilian demographic census. We found that 88.2% of COVID-19 mortality rates variability was between weeks, 8.5% between cities, and 3.3% between states. Higher-income inequality and higher-income segregation values were associated with higher COVID-19 mortality rates before and after accounting for all adjustment factors. In our main adjusted model, rate ratios (RR) per 1 SD increases in income inequality and income segregation were associated with 17% (95% CI 9% to 26%) and 11% (95% CI 4% to 19%) higher mortality. Income inequality and income segregation are long-standing hallmarks of large Brazilian cities. Risk factors related to the socioeconomic context affected the course of the pandemic in the country and contributed to high mortality rates. In this work, antibiotic pyrazinamide (PZA) photodegradation on palygorskite (Pal), NiWO 4 crystals, and NiWO 4 -Pal (2, 6, and 10%) nanocomposites was evaluated under polychromatic irradiation. In the characterization of the samples, XRD patterns displayed good crystallinity for NiWO 4 crystals and nanocomposites. In addition, the diffractograms were used in the Rietveld refinement for phase indexing, revealing a wolframite-type monoclinic structure with the space group P2/c. The active vibrational modes related to the characteristic groups of the samples were identified using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra revealed that NiWO 4 and NiWO 4 -Pal (2%) nanocomposite have the highest electron-hole pair recombination rate, and the contribution of the green component in the NiWO 4 -Pal (2%) nanocomposite indicates a greater contribution of deep energy levels to the PL profile. DRS in the UV-visible region indicated that NiWO 4 crystals have indirect band-gap energy (E gap ) 2.64 eV; NiWO 4 -Pal (2, 6, and 10%) nanocomposites have 2.62, 2.58, and 2.59 eV, respectively; and Pal has 2.83 eV. The catalytic tests showed that the NiWO 4 -Pal (2%) nanocomposite samples, under polychromatic radiation, exhibit greater efficiency in photodegradation at 110 min, with yield of 98.5%. The oil spill that reached Brazilian Coast in 2019 was one of the most extensive disasters and its effects on distinct species are still under investigation. This study evaluated the effects of the oil spill on the crab Pachygrapsus transversus in four reef areas in Northeast of Brazil that are also under different levels of chronic anthropogenic impacts. Changes in population aspects were investigated including maturity, sex ratio, and relative growth considering periods before and after the oil spill. An acute decrease in the number of females captured in areas most affected by oil spill was evident and may be associated with the closure of burrows used for protection. This paper aimed to quantify the C and N stocks and the natural abundancy of 13 C (δ 13 C) in organic matter fractions of soil, as well as soil labile C, in a long-term experiment (1997-2019) on silvopastoral systems (SSP) with low and high tree diversity in the Mata Atlântica biome. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in transects that were perpendicular to the tree rows every five meters (0, 5, 10, and 15 m of distance), at depths of: 0.0-0.10, 0.10-0.30. 0.30-0.60, 0.60-1.0 m. Litterfall, root density, total organic C and N content, δ 13 C values for particulate organic matter (POM) fractions as well as mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) and soil labile C, whilst stocks were calculated afterwards. Litterfall production was higher in the high diversity SSP for all distances, except for 5 m from the tree row. In contrast to litterfall, higher root density was observed for the longest tree distances (15 m) in the low diversity system. The high tree diversity SSP increased TOC stocks in the top soil layer (0.0-0.10 m, distances of 0 and 10 m) only and C-MAOM stocks in the surface (0.0-0.10 m, 10 m distance) and subsurface (0.10-0.30 m, 0 m distance). In contrast, total N stocks or stocks associated with MAOM and POM were higher in the high tree diversity system. The increases were of 37, 36 and 63%, respectively, for total N, N-MAOM, and N-POM up to 1 m depth. The smallest δ 13 C values found close to the tree row (0 and 5 m distances), especially in the high diversity system, indicate the influence organic residue from leguminous tree species, whilst the C4 grass held the highest contribution at the 15 m distance, also in the high diversity system. In general, the high diversity tree silvopastoral system has shown potential at storing most C in the 0.0-0.10 m soil layers only and N up to 1 m depth. Results showed very little shift in total C stocks, but the increased N stocks with the inclusion the legumes trees, which is reflected in a lower C:N ratio of the SOM. Magnaphoxus ajaja gen. et sp. nov., Ma. simplex gen. et sp. nov. and Ma. longicarpus gen. et sp. nov. are described. The material examined was collected off the states of Cear, Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia during the projects Avaliao da Biota Bentnica e Planctnica na poro offshore das Bacias Potiguar e Cear (BPOT) and Programa de Avaliao do Potencial Sustentvel de Recursos Vivos na Zona Econmica Exclusiva (REVIZEE). Additionally, material from other surveys off Brazilian northeastern coast is included. The samples were collected by rectangular dredges, box corer and Van Veen grabs, ranging from shallow waters to 168 meters in depth. The new genus is morphologically similar to the genera Grandifoxus Barnard, 1979, Metharpinia Schellenberg, 1931, Microphoxus Barnard, 1960 and Rhepoxynius Barnard, 1979. However, it can be recognized by the exclusive constricted and very broad rostrum and bilobated coxa 6, plus the combination of characters such as: lower lip outer plate with apical cusps; right mandible without lacinia mobilis; pereopods 34 carpus posterior margin with one distal robust long seta; propodus strongly armed with robust setae; uropods 12 peduncle dorsolateral margin combed distally; telson with two apical robust setae on each side. All three new species, are fully described, illustrated, and discussed.

The PIPA Project is a prospective birth cohort study based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, whose pilot study was carried out between October 2017 and August 2018. Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) concentrations were determined in maternal ( n = 49) and umbilical cord blood ( n = 46). The Denver Developmental Screening Test II (DDST-II) was applied in 50 six-month-old infants. Metals were detected in 100% of the mother and newborn samples above the limits of detection. Maternal blood lead concentrations were higher in premature newborns (GM: 5.72 µg/dL; p = 0.05). One-third of the infants ( n = 17-35.4%) exhibited at least one fail in the neurodevelopment evaluation (fail group). Maternal blood arsenic concentrations were significantly ( p = 0.03) higher in the "fail group" (GM: 11.85 µg/L) compared to infants who did not fail (not fail group) (GM: 8.47 µg/L). Maternal and umbilical cord blood arsenic concentrations were higher in all Denver Test's domains in the "fail group", albeit non-statistically significant, showing a tendency for the gross motor domain and maternal blood ( p = 0.07). These findings indicate the need to further investigate the toxic effects of prenatal exposure to metals on infant neurodevelopment.

Our knowledge of the mating systems in burrowing shrimps (infraorders Axiidea and Gebiidea) is still rather limited. Here we describe the burrow use pattern, sex ratio, and sexual dimorphism of the burrowing shrimp Axianassa australis to test for monogamy, considering that monogamous species live in heterosexual pairs and exhibit a low degree of sexual dimorphism. To this end, a total of 226 individuals of A. australis were collected from the northeast region of Brazil. Our results showed that A. australis inhabited its burrows mainly as pairs, most of which were male-female pairs. In agreement with the expectations, specimens of A. australis were found dwelling as heterosexual pairs more frequently than expected by chance alone. The presence of ovigerous females was associated with the burrow occupation; that is, brooding females were more frequently observed in male-female combinations than solitarily. Also supporting theoretical considerations, we did not observe sexual dimorphism in body size between males and females of the population and the different categories of the burrow occupation. Conversely, sexual dimorphism in cheliped size was evident in the population, with larger chelipeds in males than in females. This observation agrees with that reported for most burrowing shrimps in which male-male competition is the main evolutionary force of sexual selection. The observations above favor the hypothesis that A. australis is primarily monogamous, with a small fraction of the males moderately promiscuous.

Residential segregation has brought significant challenges to cities worldwide and has important implications for health. This study aimed to assess income segregation in the 152 largest Brazilian cities in the SALURBAL Project. We identify specific socioeconomic characteristics related to residential segregation by income using the Brazilian demographic census of 2010 and calculated the income dissimilarity index (IDI) at the census tract level for each city, subsequently comparing it with Gini and other local socioeconomic variables. We evaluated our results' robustness using a bootstrap correction to the IDI to examine the consequences of using different income cut-offs in substantial urban and regional inequalities. We identified a two minimum wage cut-off as the most appropriate. We found little evidence of upward bias in the calculation of the IDI regardless of the cut-off used. Among the ten most segregated cities, nine are in the Northeast region, with Brazil's highest income inequality and poverty. The reliability of the ultrasonic phased array total focusing method (TFM) imaging of parts with curved geometries depends on many factors, one being the probe standoff. Strong artifacts and resolution loss are introduced by some surface profile and standoff combinations, making it impossible to identify defects. This paper, therefore, introduces a probe standoff optimization method (PSOM) to mitigate such effects. Based on a point spread function analysis, the PSOM algorithm finds the standoff with the lowest main lobe width and side lobe level values. Validation experiments were conducted and the TFM imaging performance compared with the PSOM predictions. The experiments consisted of the inspection of concave and convex parts with amplitudes of 0, 5 and 15 λ Al , at 12 standoffs varying from 20 to 130 mm. Three internal side-drilled holes at different depths were used as targets. To investigate how the optimal probe standoff improves the TFM, two metrics were used: the signal-to-artifact ratio (SAR) and the array performance indicator (API). The PSF characteristics predicted by the PSOM agreed with the quality of TFM images. A considerable TFM improvement was demonstrated at the optimal standoff calculated by the PSOM. The API of a convex specimen's TFM was minimized, and the SAR gained up to 13 dB, while the image of a concave specimen gained up to 33 dB in SAR.

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) has high metabolic activity and secretes a larger number of adipokines that are related to the inflammatory process. Quantifying VAT could estimate the risk of developing Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). This study was designed to determine the VAT cut-off points assessed by DXA associated with MetS in military men. In total, 270 (37.5 ± 6.9 years) military men from the Brazilian Army (BA) participated in the study. Anthropometric measurements, assessment of body composition by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), hemodynamics and biochemical tests were performed. The Student's t test, independent samples, Person's correlation, ROC curve, Youden Index and positive (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were used. The MetS prevalence was 27.4%, which means that 74 (38.0 ± 7.3 years) military men had at least three risk factors of MetS present. The cutoff point of VAT with the highest balance between sensitivity (77.0%) and specificity (69.9%) was 1025.0 cm 3 (1086.0 g). An area on the ROC curve was 0.801 ( p < 0.000), which was very good precision. VAT ≥ 1025.0 cm 3 (1086.0 g) is associated with the risk factors of MetS and is, therefore, a predictor of the disease with good indicators of sensitivity and specificity and a robust indicator of MetS.

This paper investigates the associations of income segregation with homicide mortality across 152 cities in Brazil. Despite GDP increases, an important proportion of the Brazilian population experiences poverty and extreme poverty. Segregation refers to the way that different groups are located in space based on their socioeconomic status, with groups defined based on education, unemployment, race, age, or income levels. As a measure of segregation, the dissimilarity index showed that overall, it would be necessary to relocate 29.7% of urban low-income families to make the spatial distribution of income homogeneous. For the ten most segregated cities, relocation of more than 37% of families would be necessary. Using negative binomial models, we found a positive association between segregation and homicides for Brazilian cities: one standard deviation higher segregation index was associated with a 50% higher homicide rate when we analyze all the socioeconomic context. Incorporation of phosphorus (P) into an organic matrix may be an effective strategy to increase plant P use efficiency in high P-fixing soils. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of biochar-based fertilizers (BBFs), produced from poultry litter (PLB) and coffee husk (CHB) enriched with phosphoric acid and magnesium oxide, in combination with triple superphosphate (TSP) on plant growth and soil P transformations. Treatments were prepared as: TSP, CHB, PLB, CHB + TSP [1:1], CHB + TSP [3:1], PLB + TSP [1:1] and PLB + TSP [3:1]; with numbers in brackets representing the proportion of BBF and TSP on a weight basis. Cultivations were: Mombasa grass, maize, and common bean interspersed with fallow periods. After cultivations, a sequential extraction procedure was employed to determine P distribution among different P pools. A kinetic study was performed and revealed that TSP released approximately 90% of total P, and BBFs less than 10% in the first hour. BBF alone or in combination with TSP presented higher or similar biomass yields, relative agronomic effectiveness, and P uptake when compared with TSP. As for the soil, BBFs increased non-labile P fractions, which can be due to pyrophosphate formed during pyrolysis. A current environmental problem is the uncontrolled use of various pesticides that are harmful to the environment and public health. The herbicide 2,4-D is widely used, making it a vector of contamination for aquatic bodies, air, soil, and biomass. In recent decades, researchers have studied remediation of this compound in the environment. In this work, WO 3 and TiO 2 were supported on SBA-15 molecular sieve by the in situ anchoring (ISA) method, with different molar percentages of WO 3 in relation to the oxide content: X = 25%, 50%, and 75%. The W-Ti-S (X) samples were characterized by XDR, XRF, Raman, FTIR, diffuse reflectance of UV-vis, and adsorption and desorption of N 2 . SBA-15 mesoporous structure was not destroyed even after the incorporation of the oxides. XRD analyses associated with Raman result found a predominance of the anatase phase for titanium oxide, and the FRX showed low incorporation of nanoparticles. Photocatalytic tests indicated that the catalytic activity depends on WO 3 and TiO 2 content, although all W-Ti-S (X) samples exhibited similar TOF value. The W-Ti-S (25) sample had the highest photocatalytic activity, 76% herbicide photodegradation under ultraviolet irradiation, at 270 min. The analysis of the catalytic cycles indicated that W-Ti-S (25) keeps out 70% of photocatalytic activity in the fourth catalytic cycle. In addition, the W-Ti-S (25) catalytic activity under direct sunlight irradiation was similar to that under artificial UV irradiation.

The consumption of design drugs, frequently known as new psychoactive substances (NPS), has increased considerably worldwide, becoming a severe issue for the responsible governmental agencies. These illicit substances can be defined as synthetic compounds produced in clandestine laboratories in order to act as analogs of schedule drugs mimetizing its chemical structure and improving its pharmacological effects while hampering the control and making regulation more complicated. In this way, the development of new methodologies for chemical analysis of NPS drugs is indispensable to determine a novel class of drugs arising from the underground market. Therefore, this work shows the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) applying different ionization sources such as paper spray ionization (PSI) and electrospray ionization (ESI) in the evaluation of miscellaneous of seized drugs samples as blotter paper (n = 79) and tablet (n = 100). Also, an elucidative analysis was performed by ESI(+)MS/MS experiments, and fragmentation mechanisms were proposed to confirm the chemical structure of compounds identified. Besides, the results of ESI(+) and PSI(+)-FT-ICR MS were compared with those of GC-MS, revealing that ESI(+)MS showed greater detection efficiency among the methodologies employed in this study. Water-soluble phosphate fertilizers release phosphorus (P) to soils promptly, causing P fixation and low plant availability in highly weathered tropical soils. Therefore, the development of strategies to improve P use efficiency is needed. We hypothesized that biochar-based fertilizers (BBFs) can provide available P to plants and improve P use efficiency when compared with soluble fertilizers. Thus, triple superphosphate (TSP) and phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ) were pyrolyzed with and without magnesium oxide (MgO) and poultry litter to produce slow-release P BBFs. A pot experiment under greenhouse conditions was performed to evaluate agronomic efficiency of BBFs compared with TSP in an Oxisol. The treatments were incubated over 100 days after the application of 25, 50, 100, and 200 mg kg - 1 of P. Three controls were used, including 200 mg kg - 1 of P as TSP incubated for 100 days (named TSP incubation ) and applied immediately before sowing (named TSP planting ) and a negative control (without P). Marandu grass (Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu) was cultivated in pots for three cycles of 40 days each. After cultivation, a sequential extraction procedure was used to determine the P distribution among different P pools. The shoot dry matter yield in the first cropping cycle was higher at the highest P rate for TSP planting . PLB-H 3 PO 4 -MgO showed 9% increase in the shoot dry matter when compared with TSP incubation in the first cropping cycle. In subsequent cropping cycles, all BBFs promoted higher biomass yield when compared with TSP planting . There was an increase in the labile and moderately labile P fractions in soil after cultivation with PLB-TSP. In this paper we report the first occurrence of two rare spider crabs (Majoidea) from Brazil, with additional morphological information based on material collected in the upper continental slope of the Potiguar Basin, northeast of Brazil. Lepteces ornatus Rathbun, 1893 (Epialtidae), originally described from the Gulf of Mexico and also reported from Uruguay, is now recorded from Brazilian waters (off Rio Grande do Norte), whereas Collodes leptocheles Rathbun, 1894 (Inachoididae) was considered for a long time as an endemic species of Gulf of Mexico and herein is being recorded for the first time in the Southern Atlantic.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate medication use during the climacteric period and assess its association with sociodemographic factors, morbidities, and climacteric symptoms., Methods: Secondary analysis of data from a previous exploratory cross-sectional population-based study, conducted with 749 women (45-60 y), with the help of home interviews. Associations between medication use and climacteric symptoms were analyzed, and their correlations with other variables were made. Univariate analysis was made using the χ test, followed by Bonferroni correction (multiple comparison method). Values were adjusted for age using the polytomic logistic multivariate regression analysis. Using Poisson regression analysis, simple and multiple, we identified the main factors for medication use, with forward stepwise variable selection criteria (95% CI)., Results: The mean age was 52.5 years and menopause occurred at 46.5 years (mean). The overall prevalence of medication use was 68.8%. The use of exclusive medications for relieving climacteric symptoms was associated with the absence of diseases (prevalence ratio [PR] = 8.2; 95% CI = 3.5-18.9; P<0.001) and menopause onset between 40 and 44 years (PR = 4.9; 95% CI = 2.0-11.9; P<0.001). Polypharmacy was associated with the highest number of diseases (PR = 10.6; 95% CI = 4.6-24.2; P<0.001) and somatic Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) score >3 (PR = 1.4; 95% CI = 1.01-1.96; P = 0.044)., Conclusions: The prevalence of medication use among middle-aged women was high and was associated with the age of menopause onset, chronic diseases, and obesity/overweight status.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate women's opinions about menopause and the sources of information they use to deepen their understanding of the topic., Methods: Population-based study with 749 Brazilian women aged 45 to 60 years. The answers to the question "What is menopause?" were typed and coded, and categories that emerged from the interviewees' own speech were created. The answers to the question: "Where or from whom did you get information about menopause?" were also analyzed., Results: The mean age of women was 52.5 (± 4.4) years. Of them, 68% were postmenopausal. According to 67.5% of the interviewees, the concept of menopause encompassed changes in the menstrual cycle and hormones. For 48%, menopause meant physical changes such as "hot flushes and vaginal dryness." For 22.7%, menopause represented psychological changes. The concept of menopause was associated with some change in sexuality for 7.6% of the interviewees. Approximately 18% could not explain what menopause meant. Regarding the sources of information, 44.5% of the women attributed this knowledge to friends and relatives. Doctors or health services were mentioned by 44.3% of women. Television or radio was cited by 22.0%; magazines, newspapers, or books were cited by 14.0%; and the Internet was cited by 6.8% of women. Fifty-two women (6.9%) reported having no source of information about menopause., Conclusions: Most of the interviewees relate the term "menopause" to physiological events. There seems to be a suppressed demand for information on the various aspects of the menopausal transition among middle-aged Brazilian women.

Introduction: Medications used to treat chronic diseases have contributed to increasing longevity and improving quality of life. These medications are considered an indispensable resource in the management of most treatable diseases. However, they can affect sexual function through their effects on the central or the peripheral nervous system or due to hormonal effects., Aim: To evaluate the association between the use of medication for chronic diseases and sexual dysfunction in Brazilian women 45-60 years of age., Methods: A secondary analysis of household survey data from a previous cross-sectional, population-based study conducted with a sample of 749 women of a population of 257,434 female urban residents in the age bracket of interest. Sexual function was evaluated using the Short Personal Experiences Questionnaire (SPEQ). Associations between the use of medication and sexual function were evaluated, as were correlations with other variables., Main Outcome Measure: We found associations of the individual SPEQ domains with the use of some medications., Results: Mean age of participants was 52.5 ± 4.4 years. Mean age at menopause was 46.5 ± 5.8 years. The overall prevalence of medication use was 68.8%, with the drugs predominantly consisting of those used for cardiovascular diseases. In the Poisson regression analysis, sexual dysfunction, as based on the overall SPEQ score, was associated with sexual inactivity (prevalence ratio [PR] = 4.05; 95% CI 3.16-5.20; P < .001), a sedentary lifestyle (PR = 1.49; 95% CI 1.06-2.09; P = .021), and untreated anxiety (PR = 1.44; 95% CI 1.08-1.92; P = .014). Analysis of the individual SPEQ domains revealed that women who scored low in the desire domain were more likely to use antihypertensive agents (P = .019), whereas a lower score for the arousal domain was associated with the use of antidepressants, with treatment for osteoarticular diseases and with polypharmacy (P = .003). Women with lower scores in the satisfaction domain were more likely to use antidepressants, drugs for osteoarticular diseases, diabetes medication, and polypharmacy (P = .019). A lower score in the orgasm domain was associated with the use of antidepressants, the treatment of osteoarticular diseases, and diabetes (P < .001). Hormone therapy proved protective against loss of libido (P = .036)., Clinical Implications: Some medications can interfere with sexual function negatively and, clinicians have to be aware of it to choose the treatment with fewer collateral effects., Strength & Limitations: The strength of our study is the large, population-based sample of middle-aged women evaluated for sexual dysfunction with the SPEQ. However, it was a self-reported cross sectional study., Conclusion: This study found no association between the use of medication for chronic diseases and the overall SPEQ score, whereas untreated anxiety was 1 of the main factors associated with female sexual dysfunction. On the other hand, medical treatments were found to contribute to lower scores in the different sexual function domains. In this paper, we provide some available information about the occurrence and some taxonomic aspects of 19 species from the Superfamily Oplophoroidea in the southwestern Atlantic (Brazilian waters), with the update to 22 species of Oplophoroidea occurring in Brazilian waters. Samples were collected during two sets of surveys. The first was performed in 2009 and 2011 in the Potiguar Basin in northeast of Brazil (03-05°S; 38-35°W; between the States of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte) under the framework of the project "Avaliação da biota bentônica e planctônica da Bacia Potiguar e Ceará (Bpot)", with samples collected from bottom trawls in the continental slope at depth ranging from 150-2068 m. Second, under the in the framework of the ABRACOS (Acoustic along the Brazilian coast), performed in 2015 and 2017 on seamounts and offshore areas in Northeast Brazil (Ceará Chain, Rio Grande do Norte and Rocas Atoll, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and Pernambuco State), with samples with pelagic micronekton and mesopelagic nets, in depths ranging from 50-1260 m. We highlight the occurrence of 14 species of the family Acanthephyridae and 5 species of the family Oplophoridae, including the first occurrences of five species to Brazilian deep waters: Acanthephyra kingsleyi Spence Bate, 1888, Ephyrina ombango Crosnier Forest, 1973, Meningodora compsa (Chace, 1940), M. longisulca Kikuchi, 1985 and Systellapsis curvispina Crosnier, 1987. These records increase the knowledge on deep-sea shrimps occurring in Southwestern Atlantic.

Excess proton structures in water remain unclear. The motion and nature of excess protons in water were probed using a supported water bridge structure in electric field ( E ) with an intensity of ∼10 6 V/m. The experimental setup generated protons that exhibit a long lifetime. The effect of excess protons in water induced a ∼3% variation in the pH for a 300 V overvoltage at the cathode. The current versus voltage curves show a current space-charge-limited operation. By measuring the space-charge distribution in both the cathode and anode and by adjusting the Mott-Gurney law to the measured excess hydrated proton current and the voltage drop in the cationic space-charge region, the protonic mobility was determined to be ∼200 × 10 -8 m 2 /(V·s) ( E ≈ 4 × 10 6 V/m). This measured mobility, which is typically five times larger than the reported mobility for protons in water, is in agreement with the mechanism outlined by Grotthuss in 1805. The measured mid-Raman spectrum covering 1000-3800 cm -1 range indicates the species character. The hydrated excess proton spectral response through the mid-Raman at 1760 and 3200 cm -1 was attributed to the Zundel complex and the region at ∼2000 to ∼2600 cm -1 response is attributed to the Eigen complex, indicating a core structure simultaneously with a Eigen-like and Zundel-like character, suggesting a rapid fluctuation between these two structures or a new specie., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Background: Lymph node metastasis is one of the most important prognostic factors in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) and critical for delineating their treatment. However, clinical and histological criteria for the diagnosis of nodal status remain limited. In the present study, we aimed to characterize the proteomic profile of lymph node metastasis from HNSCC patients., Methods: In the present study, we used one- and two-dimensional electrophoresis and mass spectrometry analysis to characterize the proteomic profile of lymph node metastasis from HNSCC., Results: Comparison of metastatic and non-metastatic lymph nodes showed 52 differentially expressed proteins associated with neoplastic development and progression. The results reinforced the idea that tumors from different anatomical subsites have dissimilar behaviors, which may be influenced by micro-environmental factor including the lymphatic network. The expression pattern of heat shock proteins and glycolytic enzymes also suggested an effect of the lymph node environment in controlling tumor growth or in metabolic reprogramming of the metastatic cell. Our study, for the first time, provided direct evidence of annexin A1 overexpression in lymph node metastasis of head and neck cancer, adding information that may be useful for diagnosing aggressive disease., Conclusions: In brief, this study contributed to our understanding of the metastatic phenotype of HNSCC and provided potential targets for diagnostic in this group of carcinomas.
