8. Hybrid organic-inorganic materials: from self-organization to nanocrystals

Abstract

The advantage of inorganic–organic hybrids is that they can combine the properties of organic and inorganic components in one material; this provides the opportunity to invent new materials with a large spectrum properties. The synthesis of hybrid materials through the precise structure control from the molecular to the macroscopic level is a key point for a variety of applications. 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) is one of the most common precursors for the preparation of hybrid materials. Important applications have been reported for these materials, for instance as protective layers, antiscratch coatings, anticorrosion coatings and restoration materials; in the photonic field, as optical waveguides, or second order non-linear optical materials. Hybrids materials commonly synthesized as amorphous, only in few cases hybrid crystals can be obtained; but the practical application as photonics, require optically transparent films. In the present work we have extended the formation of hybrid crystals to thin films. This represents an important result, several requirements have to be fulfilled, such as optical transparency, and controlling of the properties that are added by nanocrystals. We have investigated the reactions in highly basic conditions of GPTMS by different techniques. We have presented the possible reaction pathways whose control is necessary to obtain a hybrid material of tunable properties. We have varied some key processingparameters such as aging time and aging temperature, and we have studied how theyaffect the self-organization process, the silica condensation and epoxy opening reactions. Finally we have demonstrate that the hybrid films prepared by sol-gel method employed GPTMS as precursors in basic condition can be used for the microfabrication and this open the route to develop new functional materials.

Abstract

Plasmonics has recently received considerable interest due to its potentiality in many fields as well as in nanobio-technology applications. In this regard, various strategies are required for modifying the surfaces of plasmonic nanostructures and to control their optical properties in view of interesting application such as bio-sensing, We report a simple method for depositing silica layers of controlled thickness on planar plasmonic structures. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was used as silica precursor. The control of the silica layer thickness was obtained by optimizing the sol-gel method and dip-coating technique, in particular by properly tuning different parameters such as pH, solvent concentration, and withdrawal speed. The resulting films were characterized via atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier-transform (FT) spectroscopy, and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). Furthermore, by performing the analysis of surface plasmon resonances before and after the coating of the nanostructures, it was observed that the position of the resonance structures could be properly shifted by finely controlling the silica layer thickness. The effect of silica coating was assessed also in view of sensing applications, due to important advantages, such as surface protection of the plasmonic structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Sol-gel silica thin films embedding an ytterbium quinolinolato complex (YbClQ4) have been obtained using different alkoxides. Homogeneous, crack- and defect-free thin films of optical quality have been successfully deposited on glass substrate by dip-coating. The silica thin films have been characterized by time-resolved photoluminescence. The luminescence properties of the YbClQ4 are preserved in silica films prepared through an optimized sol-gel approach. The excited state lifetime of the lanthanide is comparable to those observed in bulk and longer than the corresponding ones in solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Nanostructured thin films as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates.

Abstract

Nanoporous thin films with silver nanoparticles were synthesized with a bottom-up approach, and its potential as effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates was demonstrated. The use of mesoporous titania films as substrates allowed to control the growth of nanoparticles on the film surface. Atomic force microscopy measurements, Ultraviolet-visible and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the photoreduction of Ag+ to Ag0 with the formation of nanoparticles with crystallite dimensions of 32 to 36 nm. The new substrates allowed the detection of two analytes (rhodamine B isothiocyanate and cytochrome c), present in solutions at very low concentrations, highlighting their potential in SERS sensing.
