Abstract Understanding how large carnivores utilize space is crucial for management planning in human-dominated landscape and enhances the accuracy of population size estimates. However, Eurasian lynx display a large inter-population variation in the size of home ranges across their European range which makes extrapolation to broader areas of a species distribution problematic. This study evaluates variations in home range size for 35 Eurasian lynx in the Western Carpathians during 2011–2022 based on GPS telemetry and explains how intrinsic and environmental factors shape lynx spatial behaviour when facing anthropogenic pressure. The average annual home range size of lynx ranged from 283 (± 42 SE) to 360 (± 60 SE) km2 for males and from 148 (± 50 SE) to 190 (± 70 SE) km2 for females, depending on home range estimator (95% MCP, KDE and AKDE). Females with kittens had smaller annual and summer home ranges compared to non-reproducing females and subadults had smaller home ranges compared to adults. Lynx home range size was explained by availability of roe deer, except for summer, when alternative prey was likely available. We also found clear evidence of human-induced changes in lynx home range size, in particular, forest cover significantly decreased the home range size of male lynx during summer while road density led to an expansion of both annual and summer lynx home ranges. Lynx exhibited consistent fidelity to their home ranges throughout consecutive seasons, showing no seasonal variations. Strong territoriality was observed among competing males maintaining relatively low home range overlaps and considerable distances between centres of activity. The most pronounced tendency for association was observed between males and females, maintaining relatively close proximity year-round. The insights into lynx spatial requirements provided by our study will greatly enhance the accuracy of population size estimates and effectiveness of mitigation measures across the Western Carpathians.

The importance of adaptive seating system on body structure and function is widely accepted, but its impact on psychosocial aspects needs more consideration by health professionals. This article describes the Italian validation of the Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Device Scale (IT-PIADS) for non-ambulant people with neuromotor disorders. Once agreement has been given by the original authors, the scale was translated and adapted to the Italian culture. The IT-PIADS was administered to different wheelchairs users with heterogeneous diagnosis. The internal consistency and test–retest reliability were examined. Its concurrent validity was evaluated with the Italian version of the WheelCon-M-SF. The IT-PIADS was administered to 87 subjects. Cronbach's α was 0.92 (p < 0.05), and the test–retest reliability (ICC) for competence, adaptability and self-esteem subscales were 0.96, 0.90, 0.93, respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficient of the IT-PIADS with the WheelCon-M-I-SF scores showed significant data for competence and adaptability subscales. Psychosocial perception on assistive devices can be reliably measure. The IT-PIADS showed good psychometric properties and it is possible to confirm its validity for clinical and research purposes. Nevertheless, before using this measure with greater confidence, further psychometric properties tests of the IT-PIADS are recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The polyphosphoric acids (PPA) were synthesized in a cascade reactors system from P2O5 obtained from the burning of Kazakh phosphorus. Presented system provides guidelines for the PPA production process using phosphoric acids only at concentrations above 100% (in conversion to H3PO4). Polyphosphoric acids are processed in a cascade reactors system, where the in 1st concentration of PPA is increased by addition of P2O5, while in the 2nd reactor PPA is diluted with the use of 85% phosphoric acid. Produced PPA can be obtained in the 100–118% range and is characterized by high chemical purity due to the reduction of the corrosivity of the reaction, which results in very low content of iron (below 2 ppm Fe).

Introduction: Migrants and refugees belong to the most marginalized groups in the world. Barriers related to the determinants of health can often preclude access to basic human rights, and have a negative impact on health. Therefore, it is essential to understand how to properly interface with people with different perceptions of health and disease and how to design programs based on available resources., Aim: To explore the experience of socio-health workers who work in the context of a reception project in Italy related to taking care of the health needs of a migrant population in a multicultural context., Methods: This research was a qualitative phenomenological study with an interpretive approach adhering to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research guidelines. The conversations were audio-recorded, transcribed, and read in depth. Reflexive analysis was used to analyze the data., Results: Sixteen health and social workers were interviewed. Three main themes were extracted: (1) nature of needs and their facets; (2) interconnection between skills and in relationships; (3) struggles against shortages. The results highlight the participants' attribution of meaning to the needs and requirements of migrants, their experience in the relationship with the team and the migrants, and the difficulties in carrying out their role., Discussion: What the study found underscores the importance of designing interventions that consider the unique perceptions and experiences of professionals who engage with migrants in daily practice. The complex health needs, experiences, and different cultural representations of health and illness must be read and approached with a culturally competent vision., Conclusion: The study reveals how much the strengths of taking care of migrants' health lie in the ability to interconnect various competencies. Patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) who have progressed following primary treatment (PT) have a poor prognosis. In this group, nivolumab has been demonstrated to significantly improve outcomes. This study presents the efficacy of nivolumab in Polish patients with recurrent and/or metastatic (R/M) HNSCC using real-world data. The analyzed group consisted of 324 adult patients with R/M HNSCC following platinum-based therapy. Patients were divided into 3 groups based on the time from completion of PT to nivolumab initiation (tPT-N): within 6 months (refractory), between 6 and 24 months (sensitive, tPT-N ≤24), and beyond 24 months (sensitive, tPT-N >24). Survival analysis and the Cox proportional hazards model were performed to evaluate how various risk factors affect patient outcomes. The 1-year and 2-year overall survival (OS) was 19.1%, 6.1%, 30.7%, 9.4%, and 45.7%, 29.1% in refractory, sensitive tPT-N ≤24, sensitive tPT-N >24 patients, respectively and was higher for both sensitivity groups vs. refractory (p = .004) and for sensitive tPT-N >24 versus refractory and sensitive tPT-N ≤24 (p <.001). Patients with nasopharyngeal cancer had OS significantly higher than patients with other primary tumor localization. The multivariate Cox analysis showed a significant favorable effect of tPT-N >24 (HR = 0.53, p = .001) and nasopharyngeal cancer on OS (HR = 0.20, p = .008). Conversely, female sex was identified as an unfavorable factor for OS (HR = 1.48, p = .020). In our study, we established that the benefit of nivolumab increases with the increasing tPT-N. Aim: To catch a representative view of a multicultural population's needs., Design: Qualitative study., Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted from July 2022 to January 2023 with the project's stakeholders, migrants, and residents. Data analysis was performed using a multimethod textual analysis technique., Findings: Territorial barriers, lack of social network, and specific professionals' training emerged as healthcare delivery obstacles. For migrants, language improvement emerged as a health priority. A deep relationship with migrants emerged as a deficiency for residents., Conclusion: A welcoming project equipped with solid leadership and the right resources can be fundamental in mediating health promotion and integration. In this process, the involvement of the resident population is essential., Implications for the Profession And/or Patient Care: Analysing the migrants' needs and the strengths and limitations of a reception system could help identify the challenges for professionals in delivering culturally competent care. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by numerous motor and non-motor symptoms. Recent data highlight a potential interplay between the gut microbiota and the pathophysiology of PD. The degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in PD leads to motor symptoms (tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia), with antecedent gastrointestinal manifestations, most notably constipation. Consequently, the gut emerges as a plausible modulator in the neurodegenerative progression of PD. Key molecular changes in PD are discussed in the context of the gut-brain axis. Evidence suggests that the alterations in the gut microbiota composition may contribute to gastroenteric inflammation and influence PD symptoms. Disturbances in the levels of inflammatory markers, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF α), interleukin -1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6), have been observed in PD patients. These implicate the involvement of systemic inflammation in disease pathology. Fecal microbiota transplantation emerges as a potential therapeutic strategy for PD. It may mitigate inflammation by restoring gut homeostasis. Preclinical studies in animal models and initial clinical trials have shown promising results. Overall, understanding the interplay between inflammation, the gut microbiota, and PD pathology provides valuable insights into potential therapeutic interventions. This review presents recent data about the bidirectional communication between the gut microbiome and the brain in PD, specifically focusing on the involvement of inflammatory biomarkers.

Background: Immune cell infiltration is heterogeneous but common in testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) and pre-invasive germ cell neoplasia in situ (GCNIS). Tumor-infiltrating T cells including regulatory T (Treg) and follicular helper T (Tfh) cells are found in other cancer entities, but their contributions to TGCT are unknown., Methods: Human testis specimens from independent patient cohorts were analyzed using immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) with special emphasis on delineating T cell subtypes., Results: Profound changes in immune cell composition within TGCT, shifting from macrophages in normal testes to T cells plus B and dendritic cells in TGCT, were documented. In most samples (96%), the CD4+ T cell frequency exceeded that of CD8+ cells, with decreasing numbers from central to peripheral tumor areas, and to tumor-free, contralateral testes. T cells including Treg and Tfh were most abundant in seminoma compared to mixed tumors and embryonal carcinoma., Conclusion: Despite considerable heterogeneity between patients, T cell subtypes form a key part of the TGCT microenvironment. Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) deficiency is a genetic mitochondrial disease mostly associated with severe lactic acidosis, rapid progression of neurological symptoms and death during childhood. We present a 33-year-old male with PDC deficiency caused by a Val262Leu mutation in PDHA1gene. He demonstrated generalized dystonia affecting trunk and upper extremities and paraparesis as the most significant features, with onset of symptoms at age 8. Brain MRI showed bilaterally increased signal within the globus pallidus, typical of Leigh syndrome. A periodic lactate increase in serum and cerebrospinal fluid was detected. We describe a case of pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency being diagnosed only 25 years after the onset of symptoms and highlight PDHC deficiency as a possible cause of treatable dystonia in childhood, which may respond well to thiamine and levodopa treatment., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Refugees and asylum seekers bring with them a plurality of cultures, traditions, and values that could prove crucial in influencing perceived health needs, requests for intervention, or willingness to undergo specific health treatments. Although studies have focused on the health consequences of forced migration, in recent years, there has been a lack of information on how refugees and asylum seekers represent their experiences of perceived health needs and elements that influence well-being, in a community context. This study aims to explore the experience of refugees and asylum seekers in an Italian multicultural community about perceived health needs. A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted with an interpretive approach. The data were collected using a semi-structured face-to-face interview. The interviews were transcribed, read thoroughly, and analyzed. Nineteen refugees and asylum seekers were interviewed. Three main themes were extracted: (1) the centrality of the family to feel healthy; (2) feeling part of a community; and (3) stability and security. The results confirm that health needs, experiences, and different cultural representations of health and illness should be read and addressed with a culturally competent vision. Rehabilitation of injured or immature individuals has become an increasingly used conservation and management tool. However, scientific evaluation of rehabilitations is rare, raising concern about post-release welfare as well as the cost-effectiveness of spending scarce financial resources. Over the past 20 years, events of juvenile Eurasian lynx presumably orphaned have been observed in many European lynx populations. To guide the management of orphaned lynx, we documented survival, rehabilitation and fate after the release and evaluated the potential relevance of lynx orphan rehabilitation for population management and conservation implications. Data on 320 orphaned lynx was collected from 1975 to 2022 from 13 countries and nine populations. The majority of orphaned lynx (55%) were taken to rehabilitation centres or other enclosures. A total of 66 orphans were released back to nature. The portion of rehabilitated lynx who survived at least one year after release was 0.66. Release location was the best predictor for their survival. Of the 66 released lynx, ten have reproduced at least once (8 females and 2 males). Conservation implications of rehabilitation programmes include managing genetic diversity in small, isolated populations and reintroducing species to historical habitats. The lynx is a perfect model species as most reintroduced populations in Central Europe show significantly lower observed heterozygosity than most of the autochthonous populations, indicating that reintroduction bottlenecks, isolation and post-release management have long-term consequences on the genetic composition of populations. The release of translocated orphans could be a valuable contribution to Eurasian lynx conservation in Europe. It is recommended to release orphans at the distribution edge or in the frame of reintroduction projects instead of a release in the core area of a population where it is not necessary from a demographic and genetic point of view. In Central and Eastern Europe, wolf populations have been increasing over the last two decades, recolonizing areas from which the species had been previously exterminated. As wolves are still recovering after years of persecution by humans, recognizing pathogens infecting this species, including tick-borne infections, is crucial for its conservation. On the other hand the high mobility of wolves and their frequent contacts with humans, dogs, and other domestic species make them a potentially important zoonotic reservoir. In this paper, we used molecular methods to determine the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in the following genera: Anaplasma, Babesia, Bartonella, Borrelia, and Rickettsia in 50 free-ranging wolves from Poland. We detected Babesia canis in the blood of nine individuals (prevalence 9/50=18 %). The obtained sequence showed the highest similarity to B. canis isolated from dogs and ticks, and all infected individuals originated from regions endemic to the ornate tick, Dermacentor reticulatus. Anaplasma phagocytophilum was found in tissue from one individual (1/50=2 %), and the sequence was assigned to the zoonotic ecotype I., (Copyright © 2023. Published by Elsevier GmbH.)

Aim of Study: The Gastrointestinal Dysfunction Scale for Parkinson's Disease (GIDS-PD) is a novel, disease-specific self-report questionnaire used to quantitatively assess features of gastrointestinal dysfunction symptoms in patients with Parkinson's Disease. The aim of this paper was to validate the Polish translation of the scale, to summarise its consistency with the English language version, and to assess its clinimetric properties., Clinical Rationale for Study: Gastrointestinal dysfunction is a common and often debilitating manifestation of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Gastrointestinal symptoms are also considered to be prodromal features of this disease. To date, there has been no scale in Polish that has precisely assessed gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with PD., Material and Methods: The GIDS-PD was translated into Polish by two investigators (M.K. and J.N.). A back-translation was completed by two separate investigators (M.F. and A.A.) who were not involved in the original translation. Afterwards, 10 Polish PD patients underwent cognitive pre-testing. After the final translation was officially approved by the Movement Disorder Society, it was tested on 64 individuals with PD during field testing. For the purpose of testing scale reliability, 20 of the patients recruited for field testing underwent the GIDS-PD for a second time after 8-12 weeks., Results: The GIDS-PD demonstrated overall good consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.74, ICC of 0.74). Regarding the individual domains, the constipation subscore demonstrated good reliability, the bowel irritability subscore demonstrated moderate reliability, and the upper GI subscore demonstrated poor reliability. Upper GI symptoms seem to be less pronounced, and also more varied, in the Polish PD population than in its English language counterpart., Conclusions and Clinical Implications: This paper provides a validated Polish translation of the GIDS-PD questionnaire. We highly recommend using the GIDS-PD for research purposes, as well as everyday clinical practice in the Polish PD population.

Introduction: ADCY5-related dyskinesia is a rare neurological disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding the adenylyl cyclase 5 (ADCY5) isoform, a protein that plays an important role in intracellular transmission. Variants in ADCY5 are associated with a spectrum of neurological disease encompassing dyskinesia, chorea, and dystonia. State of the-art. ADCY5 mutations result in clinically heterogeneous manifestations which comprise a range of core and less to highly variable symptoms. Due to the heterogeneous nature and difficulty in diagnosis of the disorder, available treatments are highly limited., Clinical Implications: ADCY5-related dyskinesia was reported in 52 individuals in the literature over a five-year period (January 2017 to January 2022). We have listed all the symptoms and their frequency. The most common symptom reported in these patients was dystonia. Over 50% of patients developed dyskinesia and chorea. We report two cases of familial occurrence of symptomatic ADCY5-related dyskinesia. A 45-year-old patient presented with involuntary movements which had been occurring since childhood. The proband's neurological examination revealed dysarthria, involuntary myoclonic twitches, and choreic movements. The patient's 9-year-old son had developed involuntary movements, mainly chorea and dystonia., Future Directions: This paper aims to summarise the recent literature on ADCY5-related neurological disorders and to present a new case of a Polish family with ADCY5 mutation. Genetic diagnostics are important in the context of possible future targeted treatments.

Introduction: Unilateral gamma knife thalamotomy (GKT) is a treatment option for pharmacoresistant tremor of various aetiologies. There have been to date no randomised controlled trials performed to assess its safety and efficacy. Our aim was to summarise a two-year multimodal observation of patients with tremor caused by Parkinson's Disease (PD) or essential tremor (ET)., Material and Methods: 23 patients with PD (n = 12) or ET (n = 11) were included. They underwent assessments before, V0 (n = 23), and 12 months, V12 (n = 23), and 24 months, V24 (n = 15), after unilateral GKT. Patients were assessed with psychological tests and acoustic voice analysis. Tremor assessment was performed with a digitising table using the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin rating scale (FTMRS). The Unified Parkinson's Disease rating scale part III (UPDRS-III) was also used in the PD group. Gait and balance was assessed using clinical tests, stabilometric platform, and treadmill., Results: No side effects were observed in a two-year follow-up. There was no notable deterioration observed in the patients' psychological evaluation, speech, or assessment of gait and balance. The scores were significantly lower (p = 0.01) in parts A and B of FTMRS one year after GKT. In post hoc analysis, the scores did not differ significantly between V0 and V24. In FTMRS part C (activities of daily living), no significant change was observed. There was no significant difference in total UPDRS part III score or in score of UPDRS part III domains 3 and 4 ('tremor at rest' and 'action and postural tremor of hands') between measurements., Conclusions: UGKT may be a safe treatment modality if performed in an experienced centre. Tremor reduction may diminish over time, and UGKT did not lead to cognitive, gait or speech deterioration in a long-term observation.

Background: Levodopa is the gold standard of treatment in Parkinson's disease (PD). Its clinical effect changes as the disease progresses. Wearing off is a frequent first manifestation of motor fluctuations. Some patients with advanced PD report faster wearing off after physical exercise., Objective: The aim was to assess if pharmacokinetics of levodopa is influenced by physical exercise in patients with different disease advancement., Methods: 22 patients with PD (12 untreated with levodopa and 10 with motor fluctuations) and 7 healthy controls (HC) were included. Plasma samples were collected at 9 fixed timepoints following administration of levodopa/benserazide 200/50 mg for two days: rest day and standardized physical exercise day. Clinical assessment with Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS III) was performed in fixed timepoints. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to measure levodopa concentrations., Results: No differences between the HC, levodopa naïve and advanced PD groups were observed regarding selected pharmacokinetic parameters. In advanced PD and HC no differences in pharmacokinetic parameters of levodopa with and without effort were observed. In levodopa naïve PD group higher mean residence time after rest than after exercise (168.9±48.3 min vs. 145.5±50.8 min; p = 0.026) was observed. In advanced PD group higher UPDRS III score (14.45±5.5 versus 20.9±6.1 points, p = 0.04) was observed after exercise., Conclusions: The deterioration of motor status of advanced PD patients after physical effort is not reflected by changes in pharmacokinetics but rather mediated by central mechanisms.

Background: The opioid crisis continues in full force, as physicians and caregivers are desperate for resources to help patients with opioid use and chronic pain disorders find safer and more accessible non-opioid tools., Main Body: The purpose of this article is to review the current state of the opioid epidemic; the shifting picture of cannabinoids; and the research, policy, and current events that make opioid risk reduction an urgent public health challenge. The provided table contains an evidence-based clinical framework for the utilization of cannabinoids to treat patients with chronic pain who are dependent on opioids, seeking alternatives to opioids, and tapering opioids., Conclusion: Based on a comprehensive review of the literature and epidemiological evidence to date, cannabinoids stand to be one of the most interesting, safe, and accessible tools available to attenuate the devastation resulting from the misuse and abuse of opioid narcotics. In recent years, the increase in textual data production has meant that researchers require faster text analysis techniques and software to reliably produce knowledge for the scientific-nursing community. Automatic text data analysis opens the frontiers to a new research area combining the depth of analysis typical of qualitative research and the stability of measurements required for quantitative studies. Thanks to the statistical-computational approach, it proposes to study more or less extensive written texts produced in natural language to reveal lexical and linguistic worlds and extract useful and meaningful information for researchers. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a heterogenous neurodegenerative disorder. Genetic factors play a significant role, especially in early onset and familial cases. Mutations are usually found in the LRRK2 gene, but their importance varies. Some mutations, such as p.Arg1441Cys or other alterations in the 1441 codon, show clear correlation with PD, whereas others are risk factors found also in healthy populations or have neglectable consequences. They also exhibit various prevalence among different populations. The aim of this paper is to sum up the current knowledge regarding the epidemiology and pathogenicity of LRRK2 mutations, other than the well-established p.Gly2019Ser. We performed a review of the literature using PubMed database. 103 publications met our inclusion criteria. p.Arg1441Cys, p.Arg1441Gly, p.Arg1441His, p.Arg1441Ser are the most common pathogenic mutations in European populations, especially Hispanic. p.Asn1437His is pathogenic and occurs mostly in the Scandinavians. p.Asn1437Ser and p.Asn1437Asp have been reported in German and Chinese cohorts respectively. p.Ile2020Thr is a rare pathogenic mutation described only in a Japanese cohort. p.Met1869Thr has only been reported in Caucasians. p.Tyr1699Cys, p.Ile1122Val have only been found in one family each. p.Glu1874Ter has been described in just one patient. We found no references concerning mutation p.Gln416Ter.
