Abstract

This corrigendum resolves an error in figure 17 and clarifies the scope of the cement sector in figure 2. Figure 17 in the original published manuscript depicts a Kaya identity for the agriculture, forestry and other land uses (AFOLU) sector. We unintentionally excluded land-use CO2 emissions from total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in this identity, and depicted only agricultural GHG emissions.

Abstract

Mitigation solutions are often evaluated in terms of costs and greenhouse gas reduction potentials, missing out on the consideration of direct effects on human well-being. Here, we systematically assess the mitigation potential of demand-side options categorized into avoid, shift and improve, and their human well-being links. We show that these options, bridging socio-behavioural, infrastructural and technological domains, can reduce counterfactual sectoral emissions by 40–80% in end-use sectors. Based on expert judgement and an extensive literature database, we evaluate 306 combinations of well-being outcomes and demand-side options, finding largely beneficial effects in improvement in well-being (79% positive, 18% neutral and 3% negative), even though we find low confidence on the social dimensions of well-being. Implementing such nuanced solutions is based axiomatically on an understanding of malleable rather than fixed preferences, and procedurally on changing infrastructures and choice architectures. Results demonstrate the high mitigation potential of demand-side mitigation options that are synergistic with well-being.

Abstract

Global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be traced to five economic sectors: energy, industry, buildings, transport and AFOLU (agriculture, forestry and other land uses). In this topical review, we synthesise the literature to explain recent trends in global and regional emissions in each of these sectors. To contextualise our review, we present estimates of GHG emissions trends by sector from 1990 to 2018, describing the major sources of emissions growth, stability and decline across ten global regions. Overall, the literature and data emphasise that progress towards reducing GHG emissions has been limited. The prominent global pattern is a continuation of underlying drivers with few signs of emerging limits to demand, nor of a deep shift towards the delivery of low and zero carbon services across sectors. We observe a moderate decarbonisation of energy systems in Europe and North America, driven by fuel switching and the increasing penetration of renewables. By contrast, in rapidly industrialising regions, fossil-based energy systems have continuously expanded, only very recently slowing down in their growth. Strong demand for materials, floor area, energy services and travel have driven emissions growth in the industry, buildings and transport sectors, particularly in Eastern Asia, Southern Asia and South-East Asia. An expansion of agriculture into carbon-dense tropical forest areas has driven recent increases in AFOLU emissions in Latin America, South-East Asia and Africa. Identifying, understanding, and tackling the most persistent and climate-damaging trends across sectors is a fundamental concern for research and policy as humanity treads deeper into the Anthropocene.

Abstract

Abstract. The Southern California Bight is adjacent to one of the world'slargest urban areas, Los Angeles. As a consequence, anthropogenic impactscould disrupt local marine ecosystems due to municipal and industrial wastedischarge, pollution, flood control measures, and global warming. SantaMonica Basin (SMB), due to its unique setting in a low-oxygen and high-sedimentation environment, can provide an excellent sedimentary paleorecordof these anthropogenic changes. This study examined 10 sediment cores,collected from different parts of the SMB between spring and summer 2016,and compared them to existing cores in order to document changes insedimentary dynamics during the last 250 years, with an emphasis on the last40 years. The 210Pb-based mass accumulation rates (MARs) for the deepest and lowest oxygen-containing parts of the SMB basin (900–910 m) have been remarkablyconsistent during the past century, averaging 17.1±0.6 mg cm−2 yr−1. At slightly shallower sites (870–900 m), accumulation ratesshowed more variation but yield the same accumulation rate, 17.9±1.9 mg cm−2 yr−1. Excess 210Pb sedimentation rates were consistentwith rates established using bomb test 137Cs profiles. We also examined14C profiles from two cores collected in the deepest part of the SMB,where fine laminations are present up to about 450 yr BP. These dataindicate that the MAR was slower prior to ∼1900 CE (ratesobtained were 9 and 12 mg cm−2 yr−1). The δ13Corg profilesshow a relatively constant value where laminations are present, suggestingthat the change in sediment accumulation rate is not accompanied by a changein organic carbon sources to the basin. The increase in sedimentation ratetowards the Recent occurs at about the time previous studies predicted anincrease in siltation and the demise of a shelly shelf benthic fauna on theSMB shelf. X-radiographs show finely laminated sediments in the deepest part of thebasin only, with centimeter-scale layering of sediments or no layering whatsoever inshallower parts of the SMB basin. The absence of finely laminated sedimentsin cores MUC 10 (893 m) and MUC 3 (777 m) suggests that the rate at whichanoxia is spreading has not increased appreciably since cores were lastanalyzed in the 1980s. Based on core top data collected during the past halfcentury, sedimentary dynamics within SMB have changed minimally during the last40 years. Specifically, mass accumulation rates, laminated sediment fabric,extent of bioturbation and % Corg have not changed. The onlyparameter that appeared to have changed in the last 450 years was the MAR,with an apparent > 50 % increase occurring between ∼1850 CE and the early 1900s. The post-1900 CE constancy ofsedimentation through a period of massive urbanization in Los Angeles issurprising.

46. Unraveling the Biogeochemical Dynamics of Pyrite Formation and Trace Element Incorporation in Marine Sediments

Abstract

Past studies in paleoenvironmental reconstruction have set out to bridge the gap that limits our understanding of the biogeochemical controls in the past oceans by developing redox proxies based on trace metal content, iron speciation, and pyrite formation. Many of those studies have relied on broad-scale temporal assumptions about ocean redox conditions inferred from idealized chemical processes and classifying past oceans into either oxygenated, ferruginous, or euxinic. The redox threshold values associated with these proxies can vary considerably among depositional systems and, for this reason, geochemical proxies should be scrutinized in multiple modern deposition systems of variable redox characteristics (stable and dynamic). This dissertation applies various geochemical tools to understand the biogeochemical controls on carbon, iron, and sulfur reaction rates during early diagenesis. Specifically, I test, refine, and expand the use of pyrite as a paleoredox proxy by expanding our understanding on the controls on pyrite formation and the incorporation of trace elements in pyrite during early diagenesis by investigating those relationships in modern marine depositional systems. First, I explore the early diagenetic processes occurring in marine sediments with emphasis on the carbon, iron, and sulfur cycle–the three main components in sedimentary pyrite formation. This effort is made by measuring nutrients, organic carbon, and iron and sulfur mineralogical characterization and coupling with reactive-transport diagenetic modelling to understand the diagenetic reactions that lead to iron-sulfide precipitation within the sedimentary profile. Two geographically distinct locations are studied in detail: (1) The Santa Monica Basin (SMB), an exceptionally iron dominated system, and (2) Saanich Inlet, BC, Canada, a fjord with high redox variability and transient euxinic bottom waters. Then, I explore the relationships between the chemical signatures in syngenetic and diagenetic framboidal pyrite and the bulk chemistry of the sediments and bottom waters from Saanich Inlet, to understand the mechanisms of sulfur fractionation and trace metal incorporation in pyrite during formation. In Chapter 1, I explore the cryptic biogeochemical reactions that inhibit the formation of pyrite in the Santa Monica Basin. We find that this persistently hypoxic basin experiences limited bottom water O2 fluctuations that enables strong Fe redox cycling. This in turn enhances the formation of iron oxides bounded to organic matter (Fe[III]-OM complexes), limiting the reactivity of organic matter and iron oxides. The result is an extended ferruginous zone (dominated by iron oxides and dissolved Fe2+) and the suppression of a sulfidic zone in anoxic marine sediments. This study highlights key local controls on Fe availability in marginal basins and describes an intricate biogeochemical carbon-iron-sulfur cycling in modern and possibly ancient marine systems with important implications for Fe availability in the marine realm.Chapter 2 investigates the influence of bottom water and sediment (early diagenetic) influence on framboidal pyrite trace element incorporation under a highly redox variable system in Saanich Inlet. The nonsteady-state diagenetic nature, defined by rapid sedimentation rate, sediment reworking, and transient euxinic conditions, produce a restricted diagenetic system evident from 34S enriched sulfur isotopic signatures in the sulfidic species (H2S, FeS, FeS2). I explore the viability for trace element content in syngenetic and early-diagenetic pyrite towards capturing the first-degree redox chemistry of the ocean. To determine if pyrite reveals biogeochemical properties obscured by bulk analyses, I compare in-situ trace metal content (LA-ICP-MS technique) from framboidal pyrite grains with bulk sediment and porewater trace metal content from Saanich Inlet. Following, Chapter 3 focuses on machine-learning approaches for classifying pyrite into formation types, based on in-situ sulfur isotopes and trace metal content, and the implications for pyrite as a biosignature. Finally, the final chapter is a collection of concluding remarks on implications of using pyrite as a proxy of past environmental conditions and as a possible biosignature for ancient life.

Abstract

PurposeTo describe the design and baseline characteristics of participants in the Study of COmparative Treatments for REtinal Vein Occlusion 2 (SCORE2) and to compare with cohorts from other retinal vein occlusion trials.DesignPhase III prospective, multicenter, randomized clinical trial designed to assess whether intravitreal bevacizumab is noninferior to intravitreal aflibercept for treatment of decreased vision attributable to macular edema associated with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) or hemiretinal vein occlusion (HRVO).ParticipantsTotal of 362 participants: 307 with CRVO and 55 with HRVO.MethodsDemographic and study eye characteristics are summarized and compared between CRVO and HRVO study participants.Main outcome measuresBaseline ophthalmic characteristics, including visual acuity and retinal thickness, and medical history characteristics, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and coronary artery disease.ResultsThe mean age of participants was 69 years, 76% of participants were white, and 90% were non-Hispanic. There was a racial disparity with respect to disease type, with 38% of HRVO patients being black compared with 11% of CRVO patients (P value adjusted for multiple testing = 0.0001). This is similar to findings from the previous SCORE Study. Comorbidities included hypertension (77%), diabetes mellitus (31%), and coronary artery disease (15%). At baseline, mean visual acuity letter score was 50 (20/100) (range, 19-73 [20/400 to 20/40]), mean optical coherence tomography (OCT)-measured central subfield thickness was 678 μm (range, 300-1203 μm), and mean number of months from diagnosis of macular edema to randomization was 6 (range, 0-104 months). One hundred twenty (33%) SCORE2 participants had been treated previously with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy, with these participants having baseline visual acuity letter score and OCT-measured central subfield thickness similar to those without prior anti-VEGF treatment, but longer mean duration of macular edema before randomization (18 months vs. 1 month for those without prior anti-VEGF treatment; P < 0.0001).ConclusionsThe SCORE2 cohort is a heterogeneous population, including both CRVO and HRVO eyes and both treatment-naïve eyes and eyes treated previously with anti-VEGF, which will allow study results to have broad applicability to CRVO and HRVO patients receiving treatment for macular edema. Similarities of the baseline characteristics of the SCORE2 population to other CRVO trial cohorts will allow meaningful comparisons of outcome results across trials.

Abstract

The Association for the Study of Reproductive Biology (ASEBIR) Interest Group in Embryology (in Spanish 'Grupo de Interés de Embriología') reviewed key morphokinetic parameters to assess the contribution of time-lapse technology (TLT) to the ASEBIR grading system. Embryo grading based on morphological characteristics is the most widely used method in human assisted reproduction laboratories. The introduction and implementation of TLT has provided a large amount of information that can be used as a complementary tool for morphological embryo evaluation and selection. As part of IVF treatments, embryologists grade embryos to decide which embryos to transfer or freeze. At the present, the embryo grading system developed by ASEBIR does not consider dynamic events observed through TLT. Laboratories that are using TLT consider those parameters as complementary data for embryo selection. The aim of this review was to evaluate review time-specific morphological changes during embryo development that are not included in the ASEBIR scoring system, and to consider them as candidates to add to the scoring system.
