This disease has been associated with abortion in cattle in many parts of the word and today it is recognized a cause of significant losses to the worldwide livestock industry. Studies have been carried out to access the occurrence of antibodies to N. caninum in dogs from many Brazilian states. To date, however, there is no study reporting the occurrence of antibodies against N. caninum in dogs in the State of Pernambuco. In this context, the objective of this study was to access the occurrence of antibodies to N. caninum in two municipalities of Pernambuco. A total of 455 serum samples of dogs, being 287 from the municipality of Paulista (metropolitan region of Recife) and 168 from the municipality Amaraji(Atlantic Rainforest region), were tested by an immunofluorescence antibody reaction to detect antibodies to N. caninum. Out of the 455 samples tested, 118 (25.9%; IC 95%, 21.9–30.2) were positive. The seroprevalence rates found in Paulista and Amaraji were26.1% (IC 95%: 21.1–31.6) and 25.6% (IC 95%: 19.1 32.8), respectively. In conclusion, dogs from Amaraji and Paulista are exposed to N. caninum infection,constituting a potential risk factor for the occurrence of outbreaks of abortion in cattle and other ruminants in these municipalities. A neosporose é uma doença causada pelo coccídio Neospora caninum que afeta uma grande variedade de animais silvestres e domésticos. Essa doença tem sido associada a aborto em bovinos em muitas partes do mundo e hoje é reconhecida como uma causa de perdas significativas para a indústria mundial de animais de produção. Estudos têm sido realizados para avaliar a prevalência de anticorpos anti-N. caninum em cães de muitos estados brasileiros. Até o momento, entretanto, não existe estudo relatando a ocorrência de anticorpos anti-N. caninum em cães no Estado de Pernambuco. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se com o presente estudo avaliar a ocorrência de anticorpos anti-N. caninum em dois municípios no Estado de Pernambuco. No total, 455 amostras de soro de cães, sendo 287 do município de Paulista (Região Metropolitana de Recife) e 168 do município de Amaraji (Zona da Mata), foram testadas pela reação deimunofluorescência indireta para detecção de anticorpos anti-N. caninum. Das 455 amostras testadas, 118 (25,9%; IC 95%, 21,9–30,2) foram positivas. As freqüências encontradas em Paulista e Amaraji foram 26,1% (IC 95%: 21,1–31,6) e 25,6% (IC 95%: 19,1–32,8), respectivamente. Conclui-se que os cães de Amaraji e Paulista encontram-se expostos à infecção por N. caninum, constituindo um potencial fator de risco para ocorrência de surtos de abortos em bovinos e outros ruminantes nesses municípios.

A total of 625 serum samples of dogs (289 from Paulista, 168 from Amaraji and 168 from Garanhuns) were tested by an immunofluorescence antibody assay for the detection of anti-N. caninum antibodies. A total of 177 (28.3%; IC 95%, 24.9–32.1) samples were positive. The seropositivity rates found in Paulista, Amaraji and Garanhuns were 26% (IC 95%, 21–31.4), 26.2% (IC 95%, 19.7–33.5) and 34.5% (IC 95%, 27.4–42.2), respectively. Of the 177 serum samples positive to anti-N. caninum antibodies,170 were additionally tested for the presence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies and out of these 57.6% (IC 95%, 49.8–65.2)were positive. The results indicate that dogs from Amaraji, Paulista and Garanhuns are exposed to both N. caninum and T. gondii infections. The presence of dogs infected by N. caninum in Pernambuco represents a potential risk factor for the occurrence of outbreaks of abortion in cattle and small ruminants in this state. This study is the largest serological survey on the presence of anti-N.caninum antibodies in dogs carried out in Brazil and reports for the first time the exposure to N. caninum and T. gondii in dogs from Pernambuco.

In the city of Recife, Pernambuco state, northeastern Brazil, domestic dogs are usually infected by ectoparasites of both veterinary and public health importance. Heterodoxus spiniger is a common dog chewing louse, which is known as an intermediate host of Dipetalonema reconditum. Despite of its wide geographical diffusion in Brazil, Heterodoxus spiniger was only recently recorded in Pernambuco. The aim of this paper was to verify the infestations by Heterodoxus spiniger on dogs from Recife. Three hundred and ten dogs were examined and 11 of these were parasitized by Heterodoxus spiniger, corresponding to a prevalence rate of 3.5%. This indicates that Heterodoxus spiniger can be found on dogs from Recife, but in low prevalence. Na cidade de Recife, Estado de Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil, os cães domésticos são freqüentemente infestados por ectoparasitos de interesse para medicina veterinária e para a saúde pública. Heterodoxus spiniger é um piolho mastigador comum em cães, apontado como hospedeiro intermediário de Dipetalonema reconditum. Apesar de sua ampla difusão geográfica no Brasil, apenas recentemente o piolho Heterodoxus spiniger foi registrado em Pernambuco. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a presença de piolhos da referida espécie em cães de Recife. Dos 310 cães examinados, 11 estavam parasitados por Heterodoxus spiniger, correspondendo a uma taxa de prevalência de 3,5%. Este resultado indica que esta espécie de piolho mastigador pode ser encontrada em cães procedentes de Recife, porém com baixa prevalência.

The objective of this paper is to describe four cases of human parasitism by Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latrielle) in Brazil. During an investigation regarding the species of ectoparasites of domestic dogs from the metropolitan region of Recife, Pernambuco state, four dog owners were found to be parasitized by ticks. The ticks were collected from these individuals and their dogs. All the ticks were identified as Rhipicephalus sanguineus . These are, to our knowledge, the first four cases of human parasitism by this tick species in Brazil. The possible implications of this finding are discussed here. O objetivo deste artigo é descrever quatro casos de parasitismo humano por Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latrielle) no Brasil. Durante uma investigação sobre as espécies de ectoparasitas de cães domésticos provenientes da Região Metropolitana de Recife, Pernambuco, quatro proprietários de cães foram encontrados parasitados por carrapatos. Foram coletados carrapatos dos indivíduos e de seus cães. Todos os carrapatos foram identificados como Rhipicephalus sanguineus, sendo, portanto, descritos os primeiros quatro casos de parasitismo humano por esta espécie de carrapato, no Brasil. Neste trabalho, são discutidas as possíveis implicações epidemiológicas deste achado.

Em Pernambuco, o município de Moreno localizado na região metropolitana de Recife, a leishmaniose tegumentar (LT) destaca-se por apresentar importante incidência com uma média de 52 casos registrados ao ano. A LT possui hospedeiros e reservatórios naturais da doença que já foram descritos em áreas endêmicas de várias regiões do Brasil como: cães (Canis familiaris), gatos domésticos (Felis catus); cavalos (Equus caballus) e jumentos (Equus asinus). Na região Nordeste diversos aspectos relacionados a ecoepidemiologia da doença na Zona da Mata de Pernambuco já foram caracterizados, sendo a espécie predominantemente é a L. (Viannia) braziliensis. O diagnóstico da doença necessita de contexto epidemiológico, clinico e confirmação laboratorial. Esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a potencial infecção de L. braziliensis em animais domésticos através de testes sorológicos e moleculares em área endêmica de Recife. Foram coletadas amostras de 272 animais residentes no entorno de domicílios com casos clínicos humanos confirmados. As amostras foram obtidas por conveniência através da coleta de sangue e secreção da conjuntiva (método não invasivo), e 237 submetidas aos ensaios imunológico (ELISA) e moleculares (PCR convencional e PCR em tempo real). Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que a concordância entre PCR e qPCR dos leucócitos foi significativa com p=0,001, e o ELISA dos cães, cinco animais foram positivos, confirmando que mesmo animais sem lesão aparente podem apresentar DNA de Leishmania. Os dados obtidos adicionam informações relevantes ao papel dos animais domésticos e peridomésticos no ciclo epidemiológico da leishmaniose tegumentar . In Moreno, Metropolitan Region of Recife, Pernambuco, the cutaneous leishmaniasis (LT) is highlighted for exhibiting important incidence, with a mean number of 52 cases of the disease registered yearly. The disease is associated with Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, main etiological agent from LTA in the state, connected to the identification of reservoir hosts and several species of varmint phlebotomine. Are considered LTA reservoirs the species of animals that maintain the circulation of Leishmania spp. in nature. Cases of natural infection by L. (V.) braziliensis are described in endemic areas in different regions of Brazil, dogs (Canis familiaris), domestic cats (Felis catus), horses (Equus caballus), donkeys (Equus asinus). The objective of this study is to perform the serological and molecular evaluation of asymptomatic domestic animals for LTA in the metropolitan region of Recife. 272 samples were collected from animals (canine, feline, equine and swine) residing around confirmed human clinical cases of LTA. The samples were obtained by convinience through blood collection and conjunctiva secretion (non invasive method), and 237 submited to the imunological (ELISA) and molecular (conventional PCR and qPCR). The results obtained demonstrated that the agreement between leukocyte PCR and qPCR was significant with p = 0.001 and the ELISA of dogs only five positive animals, confirming that even animals with no apparent lesion can present Leishmania parasitic DNA. The collected data add relevant information to the role of domestic and peridomestic animals in the epidemiological cycle of tegumentary leishmaniasis .
