Abstract

In an effort to encourage dialogue and reflection on matters of common concern and interest, the journal staff invite responses on selected articles from other educators, who engage the text critically and offer some reflections about its utility and validity. This article offers responses from Michael Fierro and Diana Hankins on the article "Pastor-Principal Relationship in the Parish School" by S. Weiss (2007). Fierro, a parochial school principal, agrees with the author that, "There is no stronger team than the pastor and principal who work cooperatively." He believes that healthy communication between a pastor and principal is essential if either leader hopes to build a relationship of mutual trust and respect. Hankins, a principal, shares that it seems like such a simple statement--that the mission of Catholic schools is best carried out when the pastor and the principal join in a collaborative effort.

Abstract

Visible light spectroscopy (VLS) is the technology behind the Food and Drug Administration-approved TSTAT device that is used to monitor tissue oxygen (StO(2)) and relative total hemoglobin (rtHb) levels by measuring reflected visible light. The purpose of this novel, pilot study was to determine if VLS is a reliable and valid method of measuring StO(2) and rtHb levels in the human thyroarytenoid/lateral cricoarytenoid (TA-LCA) muscle complex, thus providing information about vocal fold muscle physiology.Pre-test/post-test with mulitple baselines and two conditions.VLS measurements were taken at baseline, during exercise, and following recovery on six subjects using both noncontact channel-port endoscope (endo-probe) and laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) needle-guided techniques.The average baseline StO(2) was 69% (standard deviation [SD] = 3.6%) for the LEMG-guided probe and was 71.5% (SD = 2.8%) for the endo-probe. During phonation, the StO(2) for the LEMG-guided probe dropped to 59% (SD = 7%; P = .04). Mean rtHb measured by the LEMG probe rose from a baseline of 144 μM (SD = 165 μM) to 214 μM (SD = 166 μM, P = .34) during phonation and back to 149 μM (SD = 139 μM, P = .85) after recovery. Mean rtHb as measured using the endo-probe at baseline and after recovery was 104 μM (SD = 30 μM, P = .76).VLS can be used to measure changes in StO(2) and rtHb levels pre- and postexercise in the human TA-LCA muscle complex.

24. British Counterinsurgency Operations in Ireland 1916-1921. A Case Study.

Abstract

From the Easter Rising in Dublin, 24-30 April 1916, through the Troubles of 1913-1921, a struggle between Colonialism and independence took place in Ireland. This struggle, which was a nationalist insurgency, culminated in a truce in July 1921 followed by a treaty which established an Irish Free State on 6 Dec 1921. Unable to build or equip a conventional army, the Irish mounted a guerrilla insurgency. The actions the British government took in response to the Easter rising and the subsequent Irish rebellion it triggered indicate that they considered the situation a low intensity conflict rather than a full scale war. Thus, the principal focus of the British police, military and para military effort during this period was a counterinsurgency campaign within the context of a MOOTW. Although the discontent in Ireland which came to a head on 24 April 1916 in the form of the Easter Rising was caused by a broad range of political, social, economic, military and cultural issues, this paper primarily focuses on the British military aspect of the Irish insurrection or rebellion. This is not a definitive study of British involvement in Ireland from 1916-1921, rather it is a case study of British counterinsurgency operations during that period.

Abstract

A sample of a subsoil of the Pleasanton series was excavated and brought to the laboratory, where acoustic measurements were made over a frequency range from 0.5 to 10 kHz an under three conditions: dry (the original condition of the soil in its natural environment), partially saturated, and fully saturated. Additionally, measurements in the fully saturated soil were made at two different levels of compaction, or density.
