Abstract

Changes in the vasoactive intestinal peptide-activated ion transport in the rabbit distal colonic mucosa due to peptide YY (PYY) and other Y-class agonists were examined. Experiments involving ion transport studies, ion flux studies and measurements of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate were conducted. The modulation of chlorine secretion by PYY as a paracrine agent in the distal colon was demonstrated.

15. The Traditional Vocal Repertoire of Nova Scotia: A Classification of Pitch Space

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of 10 Chicana scholars who live and work on the southwest border of the United States. The literature reveals a severe underrepresentation of Chicanas in higher education over the last 40 years as well as a critical need for more current research and methodologies that have a potential to validate the lived experiences of this group. This study is based on a Chicana feminist epistemology as it explores institutional, economic, and cultural challenges and interrogates issues related to ethnicity, gender, social class, culture, political practice, and how these have impacted the lives of 10 women on the southwestern border of the United States. Testimonio serves as process (interviewing and transcribing), as product (audiotapes and transcriptions), and as pedagogy as it re-envisions the sites of learning for Chicanas. Analysis and results from testimonios demonstrate that Internalized Oppression, Patriarchy, and Support and Coping played a role in the experiences of these women. Implications include the need for social justice studies in higher education, particularly for educators, and inclusion of Mexican American history in textbooks. Testimonio can also become a powerful tool in efforts to involve parents in schools by providing them with opportunities to name obstacles related to the academic progress oftheir children. Testimonio has the potential to become an effective way open dialogues that further encourage parents to become agents of change in partnership with schools.

Abstract

Topics addressed include teaching students to augment the repertoire of an aural skills curriculum, song titles and lyrics in Creighton's collection, and promoting traditional vocal repertoires. 28. Clinical-pathologic staging of large-bowel cancer.

Abstract

After surgical treatment in patients with large-bowel cancer, a prediction about the likelihood for cure remains uncertain despite the availability of several different types of staging systems. A committee of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons has reviewed the available data and concludes that future assessments of prognosis should be based on a combination of clinical and pathologic prognostic factors, using multivariate statistical techniques for the analysis. Although many important prognostic factors are known, there is much to learn about these and other items before a confident prediction of long-term outcome can be made. An extension of these methods should be possible to assist in prospective clinical decision making based on clinical and investigational data. Such a system would be of particular value for patients with rectal cancer for whom cost-benefit relationships of alternative treatments can be so controversial. It is concluded that an accepted, standard nomenclature is required to reach both these objectives using large multicenter studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Local tumor recurrence after curative resection for rectal cancer.

Abstract

Local tumor recurrence rates after curative rectal cancer surgery with the end-to-end anastomosis stapler (EEA®) are reportedly high. Therefore, a retrospective review in ten Yale-affiliated hospitals was undertaken to establish the outcome of surgical resection for rectal cancer in this patient population.Of those 373 patients who had had curative resections, 192 (52 percent) were abdominoperineal resections (APR); 105 patients (28 percent) had restorative resections with sutured anastomoses, and the EEA stapler was used in 76 patients (20 percent). There was an equal distribution of tumors in the various Dukes' stages in all three procedures. Local tumor recurrence was: APR 19 percent, SUT 17 percent, and EEA 24 percent, but local tumor recurrence was more frequent after EEA than APR for tumors 7 to 10 cm from the anal verge (32 vs. 13 percent, respectively, P<0.05), and the time to recurrence was least in EEA patients.It is concluded that local tumor recurrence is higher than expected for all three procedures and that the EEA stapler was associated with a greater risk of local tumor recurrence. 32. Subsistence utilization of the crab Neosarmatium meinertiin the Kosi Lakes ecosystem, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Abstract

Members of the rural communities living around the edges of the Kosi Lake system in northern KwaZulu Natal have been subsistence users of the resources of the lakes, estuary and surrounding swamp forest for many generations. Women and children dig up a variety of crabs in the mangrove ecosystem, and in the late 1980s collected as many as 638 000 crabs a year. The red mangrove crab Neosarmatium meinertide Man, 1884 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Grapsidae: Sesarminae) constituted the major proportion of these catches, while Scylla serrataand Cardisoma carnifexmade up the rest. However, subsistence fishing effort and catches have been reduced steadily, declining from about 5000outings p.a. and between 2 and4×105crabs p.a. in the 1980s, to about 1000 outings and 1.3 × 105crabs in the late 1990s. CPUE has increased from 66 to 145 crabs/person/outing during this period. Crab densities ranged between 0.35/m2on the high shore and 11.4/m2on a densely vegetated island, but it was not clear what factors most affected crab density. Densities inside and outside a ‘sanctuary area’ were not significantly different, although there were significant differences in densities among sites within the ‘sanctuary area’. Stock size within the entire mangrove area of Kosi was estimated as 728 514 N. meinerti,butthis is almost certainly an underestimate of the total stock size. Sex ratios in the N. meinertipopulation were not significantly different from 1:1 but above 38 mm carapace width (CW) male crabs considerably outnumbered females. Females matured at 24.9 mm CW and mean sizes of crabs captured by subsistence harvesters were 33.4 mm and 31.3 mm CW for males and females, respectively. Instantaneous natural mortality was estimated at M = 2.27 and fishing mortality F = 0.83. The N. meinertipopulation in the Kosi mangrove system appears to be sustainably exploited.

34. Relation of crystalline style function to food availability and environmental conditions in South African mussels

Abstract

The mussels Choromytilus meridionalis, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Perna perna and Aulacomya ater are important and often dominant organisms on the littoral and sublittoral shores of the South Africa. M. galloprovincialis has only recently been identified as a separate species, but a cons1derable body of information exists on the physiology and energetics of c. meridionalis, P. perna and A. ater. However, it is not clear what factors determine the different intertidal and geographic distributions of these mytilids. Work in the kelp beds has shown that the energy budgets of mussels depends on the utilisation of particulate material from both kelp and phytoplankton production, which have very different structural complexities and biochemical compositions. There is very little information on the digestive enzymes of South African mussels. The activity of these enzymes will be an important factor affecting the ability of the mussels to effectively utilise a food resource, and this may be a mechanism which partially accounts for their differing distributions. This work examines the quantitative and qualitative nature of the suspended particulate food resource at the boundary of the east and west coast mussel ranges, the differences in the digestive enzyme activities of the four mussel species that might utilise the food resource, and 'the animals' abilities to digest this particulate material.
