Background: Robotic C‐arm cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanners provide fast in‐room imaging in radiotherapy. Their mobility extends beyond performing a gantry rotation, but they might encounter obstructions to their motion which limit the gantry angle range. The axial field‐of‐view (FOV) of a reconstructed CBCT image depends on the acquisition geometry. When imaging a large anatomical location, such as the thorax, abdomen, or pelvis, a centered cone beam might be insufficient to acquire untruncated projection images. Some CBCT scanners can laterally displace their detector and collimate the beam to increase the FOV, but the gantry must then perform a 360∘$360^{\circ}$ rotation to provide complete data for reconstruction. Purpose: To extend the FOV of a CBCT image with a single short scan (gantry angle range of 180∘+$180^{\circ}+$ fan angle) using two complementary short scans. Methods: We defined an acquisition protocol using two short scans during which the source follows the same trajectory and where the detector has equal and opposite tilt and/or offset between the two scans, which we refer to as complementary scans. We created virtual acquisitions using a Monte Carlo simulator on a digital anthropomorphic phantom and on a computed tomography (CT) scan of a patient abdomen. For our proposed method, each simulation produced two complementary sets of projections, which were weighted for redundancies and used to reconstruct one CBCT image. We compared the resulting images to the ground truth phantoms and simulations of conventional scans. Results: Reconstruction artifacts were slightly more prominent in the complementary scans w.r.t. a complete scan with untruncated projections but matched those in a single short scan without truncation. When analyzing reconstructed scans from simulated projections with scatter and corrected with prior CT information, we found a global agreement between complementary and conventional scan approaches. Conclusions: When dealing with a limited range of motion of the gantry of a CBCT scanner, two complementary short scans are a technically valid alternative to a full 360∘$^{\circ}$ scan with equal FOV. Density and abundance estimates are critical to effective wildlife management and are essential for monitoring population trends and setting effective quotas for harvesting. Management of roan (Hippotragus equinus) and sable (H. niger) antelopes in Mudumu National Park (MNP), Namibia, is challenging because they are elusive, naturally unmarked, and believed to occur at low densities. The species are threatened by habitat fragmentation, human population growth, and illegal hunting, and reliable density and abundance estimates have not been quantified, hampering management and conservation plans. Our objective was to estimate roan and sable densities and abundances using the time in front of the camera model (TIFC) and the Poisson-binomial N-mixture model (PB), respectively. We also evaluated the effects of environmental and ecological variables on roan and sable abundance. We used data from two camera trap surveys conducted between March and September 2021 in the MNP. Results showed that the TIFC model provided low-density estimates of 1.62 (95% CI 1.61–1.64) roans/km2 and 2.46 (95% CI 2.42–2.50) sables/km2, consistent with trends reported in Africa where these species occur at low densities. In addition, the total abundance of roans and sables in the MNP from the PB model were 57 and 242, respectively. Higher roan abundance occurred in sites with higher grass cover. This study provides the first accurate camera trap-derived density and abundance estimates for roan and sable in the MNP, which will be critical for developing comprehensive conservation programs and strategies that are likely to reduce the risk of extinction for both species. Due to the presence of an additional glass pane between the camera and the scene, an additional reflection scene is captured in the image apart from the desired object sometimes. Images are more often captured from mobile handsets these days which have multiple cameras. This paper gives the advantage of multiple cameras. There exists a disparity and varied field of view when images are captured with multiple cameras. We use these two factors to act as a cue to remove reflection, as reflection intensity across the image pairs change with different field-of-view. The proposed method is robust and convenient to implement as it does not require an additional hardware, for example, light field camera for stereo images. Abstract Astrophysics and cosmology in the coming decades urgently need a large field-of-view (FOV), highly multiplexed spectroscopic survey telescope satisfying challenging image quality and stability requirements. The 6.5 m MUltiplexed Survey Telescope (MUST) proposed by Tsinghua University will be constructed on the Saishiteng Mountain of Northwest China to improve the spectroscopic survey capability of ground-based optical telescopes. In this paper, we demonstrate the conceptual design of the optical system of MUST. MUST will adopt a 6.5 m primary mirror, a 2.45 m secondary mirror, and a multiple-element widefield corrector (WFC) to ensure excellent image quality with an 80% encircled energy size of image spots less than ~ 0.6 arcsec in diameter for the entire 3° FOV and the whole 50° zenith angle range. Thanks to its compact 6.5 m Ritchey-Chretien system and 20,000 optical fibers on its Cassegrain focus, MUST will carry out state-of-the-art wide-field spectroscopic surveys with efficiency ~ 19 times higher than the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) using a measure proposed by Ellis et al. Upon completion around 2029, MUST will be one of the world's most advanced wide-field spectroscopic survey telescopes and a new essential reference for the future development of wide-field survey telescopes. It will enable significant advances in many fields in astrophysics and cosmology.

To improve abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture risk assessment, a large, longitudinal study on AAA hemodynamics and biomechanics is necessary, using personalized fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modeling. 3-dimensional, time-resolved ultrasound (3D+t US) is the preferred image modality to obtain the patient-specific AAA geometry for such a study, since it is safe, affordable and provides temporal information. However, the 3D+t US field-of-view (FOV) is limited and therefore often fails to capture the inlet and aorto-iliac bifurcation geometry. In this study, a framework was developed to add parametric inlet and bifurcation geometries to the abdominal aortic aneurysm geometry by employing dataset statistics and parameters of the AAA geometry. The impact of replacing the patient-specific inlet and bifurcation geometries, acquired using computed tomography (CT) scans, by parametric geometries was evaluated by examining the differences in hemodynamics (systolic and time-averaged wall shear stress and oscillatory shear index) in the aneurysm region. The results show that the inlet geometry has a larger effect on the AAA hemodynamics (median differences of 7.5 to 18.8%) than the bifurcation geometry (median differences all below 1%). Therefore, it is not feasible to replace the patient-specific inlet geometry by a generic one. Future studies should investigate the possibilities of extending the proximal FOV of 3D+t US. However, this study did show the feasibility of adding a parametric bifurcation geometry to the aneurysm geometry. After extending the proximal FOV, the obtained framework can be used to extract AAA geometries from 3D+t US for FSI simulations, despite the absence of the bifurcation geometry. This paper presents a design and synthesizing preprocess of silicon-integrated focal plane plasmonic switch array (FPPSA) to sensitize the beam steering sensor functions in the wider field-of-view (FoV). Initially, FPPSA is formulated with the base plasmonic beam steering theory and then we designed a structure with a 24 × 24 FPP switch array using 480 nm wider plasmonic reactive beam steering which is integrated to accomplish a phase noise of less than 0.005 dB. Furthermore, the proposed sensor is synthesized with electromechanical plasmonic unbuffered phase switches with absorption of greater than 2.66 dB/m, error estimation of 0.355 dB/m, power group index of 5.08–8.058 and the coupling coefficient of 0.22–0.856, beam divergence 0.045° × 0. 45° behavioral analysis has been done. The numerical result shows that conduction distance with the potentials 0.366 eV and 0.199 eV by the power of 20 nW are used to achieve near and far FoV of 45° × 45°−120° × 120 °. The comparative study is carried out with the existing methods (thermo optics, electro-optics, MEMS sensor beam steering sensor). Finally, the proposed design is done by exploring the Ansys Lumerical simulator. The synthesizing results received the confidence of FoV to obtain good stability in blind zone suppressed by beam steering for autonomous navigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The illusion of self-motion (vection) is a multisensory phenomenon elicited by visual, auditory, tactile, or other sensory cues. Aging is often associated with changes in sensory acuity, visual motion perception, and multisensory integration, processes which may influence vection perception. However, age-related differences in vection have received little study to date. Thus, the objective of the present study was to investigate age-related differences in vection during multisensory stimulation. Nineteen younger adults and 19 older adults were exposed to rotating visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli (separately or in combination) at a speed of 45°/s inside a VR laboratory inducing circular vection. The size of the field-of-view (FOV) was large (240°), medium (75°), small (30°), or contained no visuals. Vection intensity and duration were reported verbally after each trial. Overall, older adults experienced significantly stronger and longer vection compared to younger adults. Additionally, there were main effects of FOV and sensory cues, such that larger FOVs and the presence of auditory and tactile stimulation increased vection ratings for both age groups. These findings support the idea that vection is a multisensory experience that can be elicited by visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli and demonstrates these effects for the first time in older adults. Light detection and ranging systems based on optical phased arrays and integrated silicon photonics have sparked a surge of applications over the recent years. This includes applications in sensing, free-space communications, or autonomous vehicles, to name a few. Herein, we report a design of two-dimensional optical phased arrays, which are arranged in a grid of concentric rings. We numerically investigate two designs composed of 110 and 820 elements, respectively. Both single-wavelength (1550 nm) and broadband multi-wavelength (1535 nm to 1565 nm) operations are studied. The proposed phased arrays enable free-space beam steering, offering improved performance with narrow beam divergences of only 0.5° and 0.22° for the 110-element and 820-element arrays, respectively, with a main-to-sidelobe suppression ratio higher than 10 dB. The circular array topology also allows large element spacing far beyond the sub-wavelength-scaled limits that are present in one-dimensional linear or two-dimensional rectangular arrays. Under a single-wavelength operation, a solid-angle steering between 0.21π sr and 0.51π sr is obtained for 110- and 820-element arrays, respectively, while the beam steering spans the range of 0.24π sr and 0.57π sr for a multi-wavelength operation. Imaging objects hidden behind an opaque shelter provides a crucial advantage when physically going around the obstacle is impossible or dangerous. Previous methods have demonstrated that is possible to reconstruct the image of a target hidden from view. However, these methods enable the reconstruction by using the reflected light from a wall which may not be feasible in the wild. Compared with the wall, the "plug and play" scattering medium is more naturally and artificially accessible, such as smog and fogs. Here, we introduce a scattering-assisted technique that requires only a remarkably small block of single-shot speckle to perform transmission imaging around in-line-of-sight barriers. With the help of extra inserted scattering layers and a deep learning algorithm, the target hidden from view can be stably recovered while the directly uncovered view is reduced to 0.097% of the whole field of view, successfully removing the influence of large foreground occlusions. This scattering-assisted computational imaging has wide potential applications in real-life scenarios, such as covert imaging, resuming missions, and detecting hidden adversaries in real-time. The replacement of rear-view mirrors with camera-monitor systems introduces new opportunities for design, such as altering the image quality and the rearward field-of-view. We investigated how the image quality and field-of-view might affect the distance and time-to-contact estimation of other vehicles. Eighty-six subjects estimated either their egocentric distance to a stationary vehicle (Experiment I) or the time-to-contact to an approaching vehicle (Experiment II). Throughout the experiments, the pixel density and either the field-of-view or the viewing condition varied. A larger field-of-view increased distance estimation accuracy and confidence. Reduced pixel density led to larger estimates. In contrast, reduced pixel density and simulated dirt shortened time-to-contact estimates. This is compatible with a safety strategy applied under conditions of impaired vision. Moreover, a limited benefit was observed for higher pixel densities. Therefore, camera-monitor systems with large field-of-view and a pixel density of around 300 ppi could ensure accurate TTC and distance estimation. Practitioner summary: A camera's field-of-view and image quality are important parameters for camera-monitor systems. In two experiments, we investigated the effects of these two parameters on rearward distance and time-to-contact estimation. On-chip optical phased arrays (OPAs) are the enabling technology for diverse applications, ranging from optical interconnects to metrology and light detection and ranging (LIDAR). To meet the required performance demands, OPAs need to achieve a narrow beam width and wide-angle steering, along with efficient sidelobe suppression. A typical OPA configuration consists of either one-dimensional (1D) linear or two-dimensional (2D) rectangular arrays. However, the presence of grating sidelobes from these array configurations in the far-field pattern limits the aliasing-free beam steering, when the antenna element spacing is larger than half of a wavelength. In this work, we provide numerical analysis for 2D circular OPAs with radially arranged nano-antennas. The circular array geometry is shown to effectively suppress the grating lobes, expand the range for beam steering and obtain narrower beamwidths, while increasing element spacing to about 10 μm. To allow for high coupling efficiency, we propose the use of a central circular grating coupler to feed the designed circular OPA. Leveraging radially positioned nano-antennas and an efficient central grating coupler, our design can yield an aliasing-free azimuthal field of view (FOV) of 360°, while the elevation angle FOV is limited by the far-field beamwidth of the nano-antenna element and its array arrangement. With a main-to-sidelobe contrast ratio of 10 dB, a 110-element OPA offers an elevation FOV of 5° and an angular beamwidth of 1.14°, while an 870-element array provides an elevation FOV up to 20° with an angular beamwidth of 0.35°. Our analysis suggests that the performance of the circular OPAs can be further improved by integrating more elements, achieving larger aliasing-free FOV and narrower beamwidths. Owing to the potential to manipulate simultaneously amplitude and phase of electromagnetic wave, complex-amplitude holographic metasurfaces (CAHMs) can achieve improved image-reconstruction quality compared with amplitude-only and phase-only ones. However, prevailing design methods based on Huygens–Fresnel theory for CAHMs, e.g., Rayleigh–Sommerfeld diffraction theory (RSDT), restrict acquisition of high-precision reconstruction in a large field of view (FOV), especially in the small numerical aperture (NA) scenario. To this end, a CAHM consisting of Sine-shaped meta-atoms is proposed in a microwave region, enabled by a novel complex amplitude retrieval method, to realize large FOV holograms while breaking the large NA limitation. Calculations and full-wave simulations demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve superior-quality holograms, even for nonparaxial holograms in a relatively small NA scenario, thus improving FOV and aperture utilization efficiency of CAHMs. The reconstruction comparison of a complex multi-intensity field distribution between CAHM prototypes designed by our method and by RSDT further confirms this point. We also compare both theoretically and experimentally the CAHM by our method with the phase-only metasurface by weighted Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm. Superior-quality holograms with suppressed background noise and relieved deformation, promised by the extra amplitude manipulation freedom, is witnessed. Finally, due to its wavelength irrelevance, the proposed method is applicable to the entire spectrum, spanning from microwave to optics.

This paper presents a switched visual servoing strategy for maneuvering the nonholonomic mobile robot to the desired configuration while keeping the tracked image points in the vision of the camera. Firstly, a pure backward motion and a pure rotational motion are applied to the mobile robot in succession. Thus, the principle point and the scaled focal length in x direction of the camera are identified through the visual feedback from a fixed onboard camera. Secondly, the identified parameters are used to build the system model in polar-coordinate representation. Then an adaptive non-smooth controller is designed to maneuver the mobile robot to the desired configuration under the nonholonomic constraint. And a switched strategy which consists of two image-based controllers is utilized for keeping the features in the field-of-view. Abstract Background Exercise stress echocardiography is clinically used to assess cardiovascular diseases. For accurate cardiac evaluation, a stable field-of-view is required. However, transducer orientation and position are difficult to preserve. Hands-free acquisitions might provide more consistent and reproducible results. In this study, the field-of-view stability and variability of hands-free acquisitions are objectively quantified in a comparison with manually obtained images, based on image structural and feature similarities. In addition, the feasibility and consistency of hands-free strain imaging is assessed. Methods In twelve healthy males, apical and parasternal images were acquired hands-free, using a fixation device, and manually, during semi-supine exercise sessions. In the final ten seconds of every exercise period, the image structural similarity and cardiac feature consistency were computed using a steerable pyramid employing complex, oriented wavelets. An algorithm discarding images displaying lung artifacts was created. Hands-free strain consistency was analyzed. Results Hands-free acquisitions were possible in 9 of the 12 subjects, whereas manually 10 out of 12 could be imaged. The image structural similarity was significantly improved in the hands-free apical window acquisitions (0.91 versus 0.82), and at least equally good in the parasternal window (0.90 versus 0.82). The change in curvature and orientation of the interventricular septum also appeared to be lower in the hands-free acquisitions. The variability in field-of-view was similar in both acquisitions. Longitudinal, septal strain was shown to be at least as consistent when obtained hands-free compared to manual acquisitions. Conclusions The field-of-view was shown to be more or equally stable and consistent in the hands-free data in comparison to manually obtained images. The variability was similar, thus respiration- and exercise-induced motions were comparable for manual and hands-free acquisitions. Additionally, the feasibility of hands-free strain has been demonstrated. Furthermore, the results suggest the hands-free measurements to be more reproducible, though further analysis is required.

A deep reinforcement‐learning‐based method is presented for visual object tracking tasks. The key objective is to generate a sequence of actions which can move or scale the bounding box in the previous frame to track the target in the current frame. Two intelligent agents are trained to accomplish the above task with a special dueling deep Q‐learning network (Dueling DQN), referred to as a relay dueling network. The proposed model is divided into two agents: the movement agent and the scaling agent. The former performs horizontal or vertical movements and the latter generates scaling actions to change the size of the bounding box. The model has multiple inputs that cover both the bounding box region and the enlarged search region to improve the agents’ perception of the surroundings. The proposed method has a broader field of vision than other similar trackers and its distribution of actions makes it easy to train and improve its tracking performance. The proposed network is tested on popular standard tracker benchmarks and its performance is compared with state‐of‐the‐art trackers. The proposed network is found to be competitive in tracking accuracy and execution effectiveness when compared to conventional methods.

Augmented reality headsets in use today have a large area in which the real world can be seen, but virtual content cannot be displayed. Users perceptions of content in this area is not well understood. This work studies participants perception of a virtual character in this area by grounding this question in relevant theories of perception and performing a study using both behavioral and self-report measures. We find that virtual characters within the augmented periphery receive lower social presence scores, but we do notfind a difference in task performance. These findings inform application design and encourage future work in theories of AR perception and perception of virtual humans.

An impact angle control guidance law is proposed for stationary target interception considering missile's field-of-view limit and speed changes. The proposed impact angle control guidance law is structured as a biased proportional navigation with a time-varying bias. The proposed guidance law does not involve any switching logic for maintaining lock-on; hence, the guidance command is continuous during the entire engagement. Unlike the most existing studies, the proposed method guarantees that the impact angle error converges to zero before interception without the constant-speed assumption. To realize these desirable properties, the positive invariance of the bounded look angle interval and the change of independent variable are utilized. Atom probe tomography (APT) is a unique analytical technique that offers three-dimensional elemental mapping with a spatial resolution down to the sub-nanometer. When APT is applied on complex heterogenous systems and/or under certain experimental conditions, that is, laser illumination, the specimen shape can deviate from an ideal hemisphere. Insufficient consideration of this aspect can introduce artifacts in the reconstructed dataset, ultimately degrading its spatial accuracy. So far, there has been limited investigation into the detailed evolution of emitter shape and its impact on the field-of-view (FOV). In this study, we numerically and experimentally investigated the FOV for asymmetric emitters and its evolution throughout the analysis depth. Our analysis revealed that, for asymmetric emitters, the ions evaporated from the topmost region of the specimen (summit) project approximately to the detector center. Furthermore, we demonstrated the implications of this finding on the FOV location for asymmetric emitters. Based on our findings, the location of the center of the FOV can deviate from the specimen central axis with an evolution depending on the evolution of the emitter shape. Secondly, the identified parameters are used to build the system model in polar-coordinate representation. Then an adaptive non-smooth controller is designed to maneuver the mobile robot to the desired configuration under the nonholonomic constraint. And a switched strategy which consists of two image-based controllers is utilized for keeping the features in the field-of-view. Simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In many practical situations, images are not only down sampled but also compressed for efficient transmission and storage. JPEG and MPEG-2 compressions often introduce blocking artifacts because they process the data as 8 × 8 blocks. Many of the existing super resolution (SR) methods assume low resolution images as a down sampled version of high resolution (HR) image, and neglect the degradation due to compression. This exacerbates artifacts in the SR image and reduces the user experience. To address the joint deblocking and SR (DbSR), a novel deep network with dense skip connections and dilated convolutions is proposed in this paper, and we name it as DenseDbSR. Recently, many researchers have proposed deeper networks and achieved improvement in the SR performance. However, training deeper networks is very challenging because of the problem of vanishing gradients. Simply increasing the depth of the network leads to cumbersome computational costs. To enlarge the field-of-view (FOV) without increasing the computational cost, the dilated convolution is used. The dilated convolution exponentially expands the FOV and helps to exploit the contextual information efficiently. Moreover, the dense skip connections create short paths for gradients to be back-propagated efficiently and alleviates the problem of vanishing gradients. Furthermore, the network is relieved from the training burden by learning residuals of the SR image instead of learning raw images. From the conducted extensive experimentation, the proposed DenseDbSR network produced better performance in terms of PSNR and SSIM than the compared state-of-the-art methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Exercise stress echocardiography is clinically used to assess cardiovascular diseases. For accurate cardiac evaluation, a stable field-of-view is required. However, transducer orientation and position are difficult to preserve. Hands-free acquisitions might provide more consistent and reproducible results. In this study, the field-of-view stability and variability of hands-free acquisitions are objectively quantified in a comparison with manually obtained images, based on image structural and feature similarities. In addition, the feasibility and consistency of hands-free strain imaging is assessed.Methods: In twelve healthy males, apical and parasternal images were acquired hands-free, using a fixation device, and manually, during semi-supine exercise sessions. In the final ten seconds of every exercise period, the image structural similarity and cardiac feature consistency were computed using a steerable pyramid employing complex, oriented wavelets. An algorithm discarding images displaying lung artifacts was created. Hands-free strain consistency was analyzed.Results: Hands-free acquisitions were possible in 9 of the 12 subjects, whereas manually 10 out of 12 could be imaged. The image structural similarity was significantly improved in the hands-free apical window acquisitions (0.91 versus 0.82), and at least equally good in the parasternal window (0.90 versus 0.82). The change in curvature and orientation of the interventricular septum also appeared to be lower in the hands-free acquisitions. The variability in field-of-view was similar in both acquisitions. Longitudinal, septal strain was shown to be at least as consistent when obtained hands-free compared to manual acquisitions.Conclusions: The field-of-view was shown to be more or equally stable and consistent in the hands-free data in comparison to manually obtained images. The variability was similar, thus respiration- and exercise-induced motions were comparable for manual and hands-free acquisitions. Additionally, the feasibility of hands-free strain has been demonstrated. Furthermore, the results suggest the hands-free measurements to be more reproducible, though further analysis is required. A transmitter antenna array composed of two horn and lens antennas sharing a novel chevron‐shaped prism and one horn and lens antenna without such a prism has been investigated for 77‐GHz‐band automotive radar with dual‐range sensing and a dual field‐of‐view (FOV). The horn and lens antenna without the prism is directed at boresight to produce a radiation pattern with a narrow FOV for long‐range detection. The portions of the prism output surface corresponding to the two antennas that share the prism are angled in opposite directions to tilt their radiation patterns to the left and right and thereby provide a wide FOV in azimuth for middle‐range detection. The prism created a smooth radiation pattern in the major lobe when the tilt angle was large enough to achieve an azimuth FOV of more than ±35°. A fabricated transmitter antenna array achieved a gain of 21.5 dBi and a half‐power beam width of 22° at boresight for long‐range detection and one of more than 15.5 dBi within azimuth angles of ±35° for middle‐range detection at 76.5 GHz. This antenna array for long‐ and middle‐range detection had reflection coefficients (S11) of less than −14 and −17 dB, respectively, from 76 to 77 GHz. Augmented reality systems supplement human vision, allowing virtual objects to be placed within the real world; however, a small field‐of‐view can limit this experience. Radiation treatment planning for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) often uses computed tomography (CT) images reconstructed utilizing various section thickness and field-of-view (FOV) settings. Based on these images, a geometrical model is created by setting material regions manually over the pixel space defined in the treatment planning system. Thus, a setting difference of several pixels inevitably occurs in creation of the model. The influence of different section thicknesses and FOVs on thermal neutron flux estimations using the BNCT planning system was studied here. A virtual phantom was created with six FOV sizes on the planning system. The position of the irradiated side of the phantom surface was shifted by 1-10 pixels along the beam direction or in the opposite direction to simulate the material setting on different pixels in the geometric model. The effect of a one-pixel-difference setting on thermal neutron flux increased with increasing FOV size. Next, a cylindrical and a spherical phantom were scanned, and each CT image was reconstructed with six FOV sizes and seven section thicknesses. The flux changes for all conditions were compared, with an allowable error rate of ± 0.05, as in conventional X-ray radio therapy. The accuracy of neutron flux estimations was also evaluated by repeating the calculation procedures with CT scanning 5 or 10 times, and was found to be mostly within 0.03, except for the FOV-500 condition (0.074). These results suggested that a smaller FOV and section thickness with realistic conditions could improve evaluation accuracy of the thermal neutron flux for BNCT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To compare image quality (IQ) of reduced field-of-view (rFOV) and full FOV (fFOV) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequences at 3T, with histological T staging of rectal cancer as a reference standard.Materials and Methods: In all, 81 patients with rectal cancer received magnetic resonance (MR) scans (3.0T), including both rFOV and fFOV DWI sequences. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were quantitatively evaluated using the paired t-test. Two radiologists independently assessed subjective IQ parameters, including image sharpness, distortion, artifacts, lesion conspicuity, and overall subjective IQ of both sequences. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare subjective IQ scores and tumor apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) between DWI sequences. Spearman correlation analysis was used to correlate ADC values and corresponding T staging of rectal cancer.Results: CNR was significantly higher in rFOV DWI than in fFOV DWI (7.15 ± 2.77 vs. 5.39 ± 2.08, P < 0.001). SNR was significantly higher in rFOV DWI than in fFOV DWI (44.17 ± 11.01 vs. 34.76 ± 13.30, P < 0.001). The subjective IQ parameters of rFOV DWI sequence were rated superior to those of fFOV DWI sequence by both readers (P < 0.001). No significant differences between mean tumor ADC values of both sequences (0.991 ± 0.121 vs. 0.100 ± 0.126 × 10-3 mm2 /s, P = 0.617) were noted. Apart from T1 stage, T staging of rectal cancer was inversely correlated with ADC values of rFOV DWI (r = -0.688, P < 0.001) and fFOV DWI sequences (r = -0.641, P < 0.001).Conclusion: The rFOV DWI sequence provided significantly better IQ and lesion conspicuity than the fFOV DWI sequence. This paper provides a stochastic geometry framework to perform the coverage and rate analysis of a typical user in co-existing visible light communication (VLC) and radio frequency (RF) networks. The framework can be customized to capture the performance of a typical user in various network configurations such as 1) RF-only, in which only small base-stations (SBSs) are available to provide the coverage to a user; 2) VLC-only, in which only optical BSs (OBSs) are available to provide the coverage to a user; 3) opportunistic RF/VLC, where a user selects the network with maximum received signal power; and 4) hybrid RF/VLC, where a user can simultaneously utilize the available resources from both RF and VLC networks. The developed model for VLC network precisely captures the impact of the field-of-view (FOV) of the photo-detector receiver on the number of optical interferers, distribution of the aggregate interference, association probability, the coverage probability, and average rate of a typical user. A closed-form approximation is presented for special cases and for asymptotic scenarios, such as when the intensity of SBSs becomes very low or the intensity of OBSs becomes very high. The closed-form solutions for network design parameters (such as intensity of OBSs and SBSs, transmit power, and/or FOV) enable network operators to distribute the users among RF and VLC networks according to their choice. Moreover, we also optimize the network parameters in order to prioritize the association of users to VLC network. Finally, simulations are carried out to verify the derived solutions. It is shown that the performance of VLC network depends significantly on the receiver’s FOV/intensity of SBSs/OBSs and careful selection of such parameters is crucial to harness the benefits of VLC networks. Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) is an emerging area of brain research with clear application to brain iron studies in deep gray matter. However, acquisition of standard whole brain QSM can be time-consuming. One means to reduce scan time is to use a focal acquisition restricted only to the regions of interest such as deep gray matter. However, the non-local dipole field necessary for QSM reconstruction extends far beyond the structure of interest. We demonstrate the practical implications of these non-local fields on the choice of brain volume for QSM. In an illustrative numerical simulation and then in human brain experiments, we examine the effect on QSM of volume reduction in each dimension. For the globus pallidus, as an example of iron-rich deep gray matter, we demonstrate that substantial errors can arise even when the field-of-view far exceeds the physical structural boundaries. Thus, QSM reconstruction requires a non-local field-of-view prescription to ensure minimal errors. An axial QSM acquisition, centered on the globus pallidus, should encompass at least 76 mm in the superior–inferior direction to conserve susceptibility values from the globus pallidus. This dimension exceeds the physical coronal extent of this structure by at least five-fold. As QSM sees wider use in the neuroscience community, its unique requirement for an extended field-of-view needs to be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freehand SPECT (fhSPECT) is a technology platform for providing 3-dimensional (3D) navigation for radioguided surgical procedures, such as sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy (SLNB). In addition to the information provided by conventional handheld gamma detection probes, fhSPECT allows for direct visualization of the distribution of radioactivity in any given region of interest, allowing for improved navigation to radioactive target lesions and providing accurate lesion depth measurements. Herein, we will review the currently available clinical data on the use of fhSPECT: (i) for SLNB of various malignancies, including difficult-to-detect SLNs, and (ii) for radioguided localization of solid tumors. Moreover, the combination of fhSPECT with other technologies (e.g., small field-of-view gamma cameras, and diagnostic ultrasound) is discussed.
