Abstract

The article evaluates the effects of Fire and Fire Surrogate (FFS) forest stand treatments on vegetation structure, fuels and fire severity in western U.S. coniferous-forest. It states that the site replicated a framework for drawing broad generalizations about the effectiveness of prescribed fire and mechanical treatments on surface fuel loads. According to researchers, canopy cover was significantly lower than controls at three of five FFS sites with mechanical-only treatments. Based on the results, they concluded that mechanical plus fire, fire-only, and mechanical-only treatments using whole-tree harvest systems are all effective at reducing potential fire severity.

Abstract

The article examines the efforts of forest managers and ecologists to restore sustainable conditions in historic ponderosa pine forests in the Western U.S. following a century of logging, wildfires, and severe insect epidemics. Particular attention is paid to the unique ecological, cultural, and archaeological value of ponderosa pine forests that are in danger of being lost. Ponderosa pine remains highly valued for its wood, shelter, and beauty. How housing development on the edge of forest areas complicates plans for active forest management and fire policy are assessed. The restoration of old-growth pine forests can benefit from the removal of young trees from around the rooting zone.
