Aerosols in the environment we live in reduce the quality of the images we take. For different purposes, it is necessary to clean the blurs in the obtained images. There are many algorithms in the literature to achieve this. In the last 10 years, many new approaches have been developed in the problem of defogging image processing. Among these, the most successful and most used algorithm is the Dark Channel Prior algorithm. The Dark Channel Prior algorithm is based on very low pixel density values in different color channels. These low density values create a patch for the fog in the image with the algorithm and can remove or reduce the effect of foggy scenes. In this study, by using the "exposure fusion" algorithm, better exposed images were obtained by fusing different exposures according to values such as contrast and saturation. In this paper, it will be shown with different examples that more successful fog removal results are obtained by using the Dark Channel Prior algorithm together with the exposure fusion algorithm., Yaşadığımız ortamda bulunan aerosoller, çektiğimiz görüntülerin kalitesini azaltmaktadır. Farklı amaçlar için, elde edilen görüntülerdeki bulanıklıkların temizlenmesi ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Bunu gerçekleştirmek için literatürde çok sayıda algoritma bulunmaktadır. Son 10 yılda sis giderme görüntü işleme probleminde birçok yeni yaklaşım geliştirilmiştir. Bunlarda, en başarılı olan ve en çok kullanılan algoritma Dark Channel Prior algoritmasıdır. Dark Channel Prior algoritması, farklı renk kanallarında çok düşük piksel yoğunluğu değerlerine dayanmaktadır. Bu düşük yoğunluklu değerler, algoritma ile görüntüdeki sis için bir yama oluşturur ve sisli sahneleri kaldırabilir veya etkisini azaltabilir. Bu çalışmada, “exposure fusion” algoritmasını kullanarak, birbirinden farklı pozlamaları contrast ve doygunluk gibi değerlere göre füzyon ederek daha iyi pozlanmış imgeler elde edilmiştir. Bu bildiride, Dark Channel Prior algoritmasının, exposure fusion algoritması ile beraber kullanılması ile, daha başarılı sis giderme sonuçlarının elde edildiği farklı örneklerle gösterilecektir.

Uçuş TestEnstrümantasyonu (FTI) sensörler ile donatılmış helikopter gibi bir deneyselhava aracının belirli koşullarda ve manevralarda uçuş testlerinin yapılıpdavranışlarının izlenmesi ve kayıt altına alınmasından sorumludur. Gerinim,yük, basınç, ivme, titreşim ve sıcaklık gibi helikopterlerin performans,yapısal dinamik, kullanım, güvenilirlik ve bakım ölçümleri için çeşitli testverileri toplanmaktadır. Çeşitli sensörlerden toplanan verilerin kapsamlı birşekilde işlenmesi ve filtrelenmesi gerekmektedir. Geleneksel olarak buparametreler elektriksel ve mekanik sensörler kullanılarak elde edilmektedir.Helikopter üzerindeki dönen yapılar bu sensörlerin doğruluğunu ve ömrünüetkileyebilecek titreşimlere neden olmaktadır. Ayrıca sıcaklık, nem ve korozyonun geleneksel sensörler üzerinde olumsuzetkileri vardır. Bu geleneksel sensörleri bağlamak için çok sayıda kablokullanılması, kablolamada karmaşıklığa, fazladan ağırlığa ve maliyete nedenolmaktadır. Diğer taraftan, fiber optik sensörler, geleneksel sensörlere göreelektromanyetik girişimlere karşı bağışıklık, hafiflik, elektrik akımıiletmeme, sağlamlık, zorlu ortamlara karşı dirençli olması, yüksek hassasiyetesahip olması, sensör füzyonu için çoklama kabiliyeti, uzaktan algılamakabiliyeti gibi önemli avantajlar sunmaktadır. Aynı zamanda gerinim, basınç,sıcaklık, korozyon ve titreşim gibi parametreleri çok fonksiyonlu algılamakabiliyetine de sahiptir. Fiber Bragg Izgara (FBG) sensörleri adı verilen özelbir fiber optik sensör türü, küçük boyutları ve silindirik geometrilerindendolayı çok az etkileşim ile kompozit malzemeler de dahil olmak üzere çokçeşitli yapılara kolay bir şekilde entegre edilebilmektedir. Bu avantajlar nedeniylefiber optik sensörler helikopterlerde Sağlık ve Kullanım İzleme Sistemleri(HUMS) için yeni bir fırsat sunmaktadır. HUMS'da fiber optik sensörlerinkullanımının periyodik bakımı en aza indirgemesi, gerçek zamanlı izleme ileönceden emniyet risklerini belirleyerek zamanla kısa ve uzun vadeli maliyetlerive tamir sürelerini azaltması beklenmektedir. Bu makale, helikopter uçuş testenstrümantasyonunda fiber optik sensörlerin kullanılmasındaki ve büyük verininişlenmesindeki son gelişmelere, araştırmalara ve uygulamalara genel bir bakışsunmaktadır.

A new voltage-mode triple-input single-output multifunction filter using only two current conveyors is presented. The proposed filter which possesses three inputs and single-output can generate all biquadratic filtering functions at the output terminal by selecting different input signal combinations. In this dissertation a new time domain approach for the determination of material properties such as the complex permittivity and the complex permeability in a stripline geometry is presented. The new technique uses both Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) and Time Domain Transmission (TDT) measurements for determining an optimum frequency dependent lossy transmission line model for the stripline under test. The optimization is done in the time domain by comparing the experimental TDR and TDT response waveforms with the simulated ones using a non-linear least squares fit. The conventional optimization algorithms have shown to be inefficient in this specific application. In this dissertation an efficient optimization algorithm which has been developed to suit this application is also presented. In general, the material properties in a stripline under test are related with the geometrical parameters of the line through complicated integral expressions. Using the proposed approach, the use of complicated integral expressions are avoided. The material properties such as the complex permittivity and the complex permeability are determined from the optimum lossy transmission line model. For this purpose, the frequency behavior of the line parameters have to be known beforehand in the form of causal mathematical models. The literature survey shows that, no causal model exists for the complex permittivity of thick film and polymer materials. The dissertation proposes a new causal model for this purpose. Ph. D.

Dış mekânlarda elde edilen dijital görüntüler, atmosfer içerisinde oluşan sis nedeni ile önemli olan detayların, nesnelerin, renklerin bozulmasına veya kaybolmasına sebep olabilir. Görüntülerdeki sis kaynaklı bozulmaların düzeltilmesine, ilgi alanlarının ortaya çıkartılmasına ve sisin görüntü içinden çıkarılmasına sis kaldırma (haze removal, fog removal) denir. Bu amaçla geliştirilmiş olan filtre tabanlı Dark Channel Prior (DCP) algoritması sis kaldırma algoritmaları içerisinde önemli bir yere sahiptir. DCP algoritması, sis içermeyen dış sahne görüntülerinin farklı renk kanallarında çok düşük piksel yoğunluğu değerleri olduğu gözlemine dayanmaktadır. Bu algoritma ile görüntüdeki sis için bir yama oluşturulur ve görüntü içerisindeki sis kaldırabilir veya azaltılabilir. Pozlama füzyonu algoritmalarının önemli ve yaygın olarak kullanılan örneklerinden biri ise Exposure Fusion algoritmasıdır. Bu algoritma, farklı pozlama seviyelerinde yakalanan görüntüyü doygunluk ve kontrast değerlerine göre ağırlıklandırır ve gerçekleştirdiği füzyon işlemi ile imgenin pozlama seviyesini düzeltir. Bu tez kapsamında, Dark Channel Prior ve Exposure Fusion algoritmaları beraber kullanılarak, görüntü içerisinden sis kaldırma işlemi daha başarılı bir şekilde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Böylelikle, sis kaldırma işleminden sonra yapısal olarak daha az bozulmuş, daha doğal ve ilgi alanları sis görüntüsünden arındırılmış görüntüler elde edilmiştir. Geliştirilen yaklaşım, sis içeren imgenin ilk olarak pozlanmasının düzeltilmesi, daha sonra ise pozlaması düzeltilmiş imgenin DCP algoritması ile sis kaldırma işlemine alınmasını içermektedir. Bu sayede, DCP algoritmasının sis kaldırma başarımı arttırılmıştır. Önerilen yaklaşım, sis içeren imgelerden oluşan O-Haze veri tabanı içindeki imgeler ile test edilmiş ve sonuçlar farklı performans metrikleri ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Digital images obtained outdoors may cause the deterioration or loss of important details, objects and colors due to the fog formed in the atmosphere. Correcting the fog-related distortions in the images, revealing the areas of interest and removing the fog from the image is called haze removal. The filter-based Dark Channel Prior (DCP) algorithm developed for this purpose has an important place among fog removal algorithms. DCP algorithm is based on the observation that fog-free outdoor scene images have very low pixel density values in different color channels. With this algorithm, a patch is created for the fog in the image and the fog in the image can be removed or reduced. One of the important and widely used example of image fusion algorithms is the Exposure Fusion algorithm. This algorithm weights the image captured at different exposure levels according to the saturation and contrast values and corrects the exposure level of the image with the fusion process it performs. Within the scope of this thesis, the process of removing fog from the image was performed more successfully by using the Dark Channel Prior and Exposure Fusion algorithms together. Thus, images that are less structurally distorted, more natural and areas of interest free from fog images were obtained after defog removal. The developed approach consists of firstly correcting the exposure of the image containing the fog, and then taking the exposure corrected image into the fog removal process with the DCP algorithm. In this way, the fog removal performance of the DCP algorithm has been increased. The proposed method has been tested with images in the O-Haze database, which consists of fog images, and the results are compared with different performance metrics.

Fiber optik sensörler, elektromanyetik girişime karşı duyarsız olma, küçük boyutluluk, düşük ağırlık, elektriksel olarak pasifolma, sağlamlık ve büyük bant genişliği gibi birçok avantajları nedeniyle son yıllarda artan bir hızla birçok uygulamada geleneksel sensörlerin yerine kullanılmaktadır. Endüstriyel uygulamalarda, fiber optik sensörler sıcaklık, elektromanyetik alan, basınç, pH, sıvı seviyesi ölçümleri, nem, konum, yer değiştirme, gerginlik ve titreşim ölçümlerinde kullanılmaktadır.Fiber optik sensörlerde tek modlu veya çok modlu optik fiberler kullanılmaktadır. Son yıllarda geliştirilen hibrit yapıya sahipüçüncü bir fiber çeşidi ise hetero-özlü optik fiberlerdir. Hetero-özlü optik fiberler, ek yeri birleştirme cihazı (fusion splicer)kullanarak optik fiberin küçük bir kısmı kesilerek, arasına bu optik fiber ile farklı boyutta öz (core) çapına fakat aynı boyutta yelek çapına sahip başka bir fiberin eklenmesi ile oluşturulur. Hetero-özlü optik fiberlerde öz çaplarındaki farklılıktan dolayı fibere dışarıdan bir etki uygulandığında fiberlerin ek yerlerinde ışık kaybı diğer fiberlere göre daha fazla olmaktadır. Böylece hetero-özlü optik fiber kullanarak daha hassas fiber optik sensörler tasarlanabilmektedir. Sanayide sıklıkla tanklardaki yakıt seviyelerininin ölçülmesine ihtiyaç duyulur. Örnegin, toplu taşıma sistemlerinde ya da benzin istasyonlarında ve sert ya da yüksek derecede yanıcı çevre koşullarına maruz kalan büyük konteynırlarda yakıt seviyesinin bilinmesi önem arz eder. Böyle bir sistem geliştirmek için mekanik, kapasitif, indüktif, ultrasonik, akustik ya daoptik gibi farklı metotlar uygulanabilir. In recent years, the use of fiber optic sensors have tremendously increased in many applications instead of conventional sensors due to their advantages such as immunity to electromagnetic interference, small size, light weight, inability to conduct electric current, robustness, and high bandwidth. Fiber optic sensors are used in the measurement of temperature, electromagnetic fields, pressure, pH, liquid level, humidity, position, displacement, strain and vibration.Fiber optic sensors utilize single mode or multimode fibers. In recent years, a new hybrid type hetero-core optical fiber has been developed. The hetero-core fiber is fabricated by inserting a small segment of fiber with a smaller core diameter between two identical fibers with larger core diameters by using fusion splicer. Due to the large difference between the inner and outer core diameters of the optical fibers, more light can leak into the cladding of the hetero-core optical fiber as compared with the other types of optical fibers. Hence, more sensitive fiber optic sensors can be designed by using hetero-core optical fibers.Industry frequently needs to measure fuel levels in tanks such as public-transport systems or service stations and any other large containers which imply exposure to harsh or highly flammable environments, as in the case of petroleum derivatives. Different methods such as mechanical, capacitive, inductive, ultrasonic, acoustic or optical can be implemented. The main disadvantage of this system is that an electrical current must be introduced into the flammable (or simply conducting) liquid. There is a commercial need for a non-electrical fuel-quantity sensor to operate in the hazardous environment of fuel tanks; the sensor should be unaffected by electromagnetic interference and suitable for incorporation in a distributed sensing system. The sensor must be immune to liquid problems such as foaming, boiling, dirtying and agitation. Because of their non-electrical nature, liquid-level sensors utilizing optical fibers are widely required in the chemical industry. Fiber-optic sensor solutions have attractive properties for liquid-level measurements in practice. These applications can be carried out in oil tanks, air fuel tanks, containers, bio-mass boilers in condominiums, flood areas and underground, or even in lead-acid batteries. In this thesis, design of hetero-core surface plasmon resonance (SPR) fiber optic sensors for liquid level detection in fuel tanks is proposed. 85

Bu tez, fartklı sensor konfigürasyonları ile basınç sensörleri tasarlamak için fiber optik sensor sistemi geliştirilmesi konusunda detaylı çalışmalar içermektedir. Deneylerde modların güç dağılımı (MPD) tekniği tabanlı sensörler kullanılmıştır. MPD tekniği, çok modlu fiberlerde mod güçlerinin konumsal modülasyonudur. Bu çalışmada basınç ölçümleri ve CCD kamera tabanlı teknikler incelenmiştir. Geçmişteki MPD çalışmalarından farklı olarak, CCD kameradan alınan bilginin bir kısmının kullanılması yerine tamamının kullanılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla, CCD kameradan alınan halka şeklindeki görüntüler polar koordinatlarına dönüştürülmüş, böylece şerit şeklinde görüntüler elde edilmiştir. Bu yeni görüntülerden dört farklı özellik hesaplanmıştır. Hesaplanan özelliklerin ilki polar formdaki ağırlık merkezinin r bileşenidir. Bu özelliğin hesaplanmasın arkasındaki motivasyon, r bileşeninin uygulanan ağırlıkla doğru orantılı olarak azalmasının beklenmesidir. İkinci ve üçüncü özellikler, polar formda, her bir pikselin parlaklığı hesaba katılarak ve katılmadan hesaplanan şerit kalınlığıdır. Bu özellikler ile her bir pikselin parlaklığının etkisinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu iki özellik arasında fazla fark olmaması beklenmiştir. CCD kameradan 1 kg, 2 kg ve 3 kg'lık adımlarla görüntüler alınmıştır ve mevcut MATLAB kodu ile her bir özelliğin uygulanan ağırlığa göre değişimini gösteren grafikler elde edilmiştir. Deneysel sonuçlar, önerilen sensörün, geçmiş MPD çalışmalarındaki kameradan gelen bilginin yalnızca bir kısmını kullanan sensörlere oranla çok daha hassas olduğunu göstermiştir. Bununla birlikte, sonuçlar dört özellik için de beklendiği gibi çıkmıştır. Sonuçlar ayrıca göstermektedir ki görüntüleri polar forma dönüştürmek, sensörün hassasiyetini ve güvenilirliğini önemli ölçüde arttırmaktadır. This thesis presents detailed study on the development of a fiber optic sensor system to design a pressure sensor with different sensor configurations. The sensor used in the experiments is based on modal power distribution (MPD) technique. MPD technique is spatial modulation of the modal power in multimode fibers. Stress measurements and CCD camera based techniques were investigated in this research. Differently from earlier MPD works, all of the data gathered from CCD camera are used instead of using some part of the data, the ring shaped pictures taken from the CCD camera converted to polar coordinates, and so stripe shaped pictures are obtained. Four different features are calculated from these converted pictures. R component of the center of mass in the polar form is the first feature. It is calculated because it was expected to decrease monotonically with respect to increasing applied pressure. Second and third features are ring thickness in polar form with taking brightness of each pixel into account and ring thickness in polar form without taking brightness of each pixel into account. These features are calculated to analyze the effect of each pixel's brightness. It was expected for these two features that there will not be a big margin between them. Fourth feature is the ratio between third feature and first feature. A MATLAB code is written to correlate these features and applied force to the sensor. Various experiments conducted to analyze this correlation. Pictures are taken from CCD camera with 1 kg, 2 kg and 3 kg steps and from the written MATLAB code, graphics of each feature versus the applied force are generated. Experimental results showed that, the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is much higher than sensors that uses only some part of the collected data in earlier MPD studies. Furthermore, results are almost exactly the same that what was expected for the four proposed features. Results also showed that converting pictures to the polar form increases the sensitivity and reliability. 116

Their size,weight, immunity to electromagnetic interference make them very useful alternatives for healthcare monitoring. The hetero-core optical fibers are novel fiber optic sensors that consists of multimode fibers and a short piece of single-mode fiber, which is inserted between the multimode fibers. Hetero-core fiber optic sensors are more sensitive than other fiber optic sensors because of the mode coupling taking place between the multimode and single-mode fibers. In this thesis, the potential impact of optical fiber sensors embedded into medical textiles for the monitoring of respiratory movements is presented. We report a design, textile based: a macrobending sensor. In this case, the sensing principle is based on the measure of the elongation of the abdominal circumference during breathing movements. 162

Zamanla haberleşme insanların temel ihtiyacı haline gelmiştir.21. yüzyılın başında akıllı cihazların hızlı gelişimi ile insanlar haberleşmek için daha fazla veri trafiğine ihtiyaçları vardır. Bu internet veri trafik ihtiyacını önemli ölçüde yükseltmiştir. Dünyada veri trafikleri yaklaşık olarak her yıl 2 kat artmaktadır. Bu sebeple IP/MPLS merkezlerinin merkez ağları veya omurga ağları daha fazla taşıyıcıya ihtiyacı vardır. Ancak bu işlemi IP/MPLS tarafında yapmak çok pahaldır. Bu noktada alternatif taşıma yöntemlerine ihtiyacımız vardır. Taşıma kapasitesini arttırmak için araştırmacılar farklı iletim sistemleri üzerinde çalışmaktadırlar. Overtime communication has become one of the basic needs of people. In the beginning of 21th century, due to the rapid development smart devices people needs more data traffic for communicate. So internet data traffic was driving the bandwidth demand. On the World data traffic increases about 2 times in every year. Therefore, IP/MPLS core networks or backbone networks need more transporters, but this process is very expensive. At this point we need alternative transport approaches. To increase the transport capacity, researches are working on different transmission systems. Wavelength division multiplexing or upper version (WDM) Dense Wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) is the one of these systems. But DWDM system has limited transport channel capacity. Thus we need alternative techniques to transport. Orthogonal frequency ? division multiplexing or briefly OFDM. OFDM is a form of multi-carrier transmission which transmits a large data with a large number of orthogonal sub-carriersThe optical OFDM (O-OFDM) which was first recommended in 1996. OFDM has two different detection types one is direct-detection optical OFDM (DDO-OFDM) and other one is coherent detection optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) systems. In this thesis, the performance of different detection techniques used in O-OFDM transmission systems are analyzed. Thus, core networks are faced with bottleneck problems. To increase the capacity, researches are working on different approaches. One of these approaches is the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). However, WDM systems need to use expensive broadband optical amplifier and highly sharp, fixed wavelength lasers to use more channels and decrease the channel spacing. Other approaches are based on both single carrier and multi-carrier modulation techniques which heavily depend on digital signal processing (DSP) techniques. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Technique (OFDM) is a multi-carrier modulation technique which is widely used in wireless communications systems. OFDM modulation includes many orthogonally multiplexed subcarriers which are very robust to frequency selective fading.The optical OFDM (O-OFDM) which was first proposed in 1996 is divided into direct-detection optical OFDM (DDO-OFDM) and coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) systems. CO-OFDM is an alternative system for achieving high data rates.In this thesis, the performance of different design scenarios used in CO-OFDM transmission systems are analyzed. The simulations are carried out by using OptiSystem, optical communication system design software for several CO-OFDM architectures using different coding schemes, optical amplifiers and optical detectors. In each case, the simulation results are compared with each other based on their output BER, constellation and eye diagrams. 187

Fiber optik sensörler yapısal gözlemleme için çok iyi adaylardır. Boyutları, ağırlıkları, elektromanyetik girişime duyarsızlıkları yapısal gözlemleme için onları kullanışlı alternatifler haline getirir. Mikro kıvrılma ve makro kıvrılma gibi fiber optik sensör teknikleri yıllardır akıllı yapıların sağlık gözlemlenmesinde kullanılmaktadır.Yeni bir sensör çeşidi olan hetero-core fiberler, çoklu mod fiberlere tek modlu kısa bir fiber parçasının yerleştirilmesiyle oluşturulmuş fiberlerdir. Hetero-core fiber optik sensörleri, içerisinde gerçekleşen mod kuplajı sayesinde daha hassas bir sensör yapısı içererek, büyük avantajlara sahip olarak icat edilmiştir.Bu tez, akıllı yapıların durumlarını gözlemlemek için yeni mikrokıvrılma ve makrokıvrılma sensörleri sunmaktadır. Their size, weight, immunity to electromagnetic interference make them very useful alternatives for structural monitoring. Techniques such as microbending and macrobending of fiber optic sensors have been used for health monitoring of smart structures for many years.The hetero-core optical fibers are novel fiber optic sensors that consists of multimode fibers and a short piece of single-mode fiber, which is inserted between the multimode fibers. Hetero-core fiber optic sensors are more sensitive than other fiber optic sensors because of the mode coupling taking place between the multimode and single-mode fibers.This thesis presents new microbending and macrobending sensors in order to monitor the health of smart structures. In these sensors, hetero-core fiber optics are used. Also, the characteristics of hetero-core fibers for microbending and macrobending are investigated. In addition to this, a novel hetero-core fiber, multimode-multimode-multimode hetero-core is introduced. This new hetero-core fiber is found to be more sensitive than other hetero-core fibers and ordinary fibers for microbending. By using this novel hetero-core fiber, more sensitive microbending scheme is introduced. 103

Fiber optics provide high data transfer rates due to large bandwidth. Fiber optic sensors are proportionally improved by means of optoelectronics industry. Fiber optic sensors provide a system composed of distributed sensors in smart structures. The smart structure technology requires the development of materials with self optical nerves. These nerves are fiber sensors.Fiber optic sensors can be constructed to measure a wide range of effects by means of changes in light beams that are propagating through the optical fibers. Thus, they are mostly used in re-inforced concrete structures such as bridges and buildings. Important parameters for infrastructure applications that may be possibly measured include longitudinal and transverse strain, pressure, temperature, and corrosion.In this thesis, fiber optic microbend sensors are studied. The theory of basics of fiber optics, types of fiber optic sensors, mode coupling and periodicity are described. The optical intensity is measured as function of both force and displacement applied to the microbend deformer sets. The usefulness of sensor is investigated and the long term deformation on sensor is observed. 89

The health monitoring of smart structures is becoming more and more important as insitustructural monitoring would reduce structure life-cycle costs and improve reliability.Fiber optic sensors provide an excellent opportunity to fulfill structural monitoring. Manyadvantages over conventional sensors such as size, weight, immunity to electromagneticinterference and the ability to integrate the sensor into a material structure play a major rolefor widely use of fiber optical sensors in structural monitoring.Beside advantages; recent advances, and cost reductions has stimulated interest in fiberoptical sensing. So, researchers combined the product outgrowths of fiber optictelecommunications with optoelectronic devices to emerge fiber optic sensors. Numerousresearches have been conducted in past decades using fiber optic sensors with differenttechniques. Intensity, phase, and wavelength based fiber optic sensors are the most widelyused sensor types. This thesis presents detailed study on the development of a fiber opticsensor system and an image processing technique for health monitoring of smart structures.The sensor used in the experiments is based on modal power distribution (MPD) technique.MPD technique is spatial modulation of the modal power in multimode fibers. Stress andstrain measurements and comparison of CCD camera and power-meter measurements basedtechniques were investigated in this research.In addition, a simple and a cost effective miniature fiber optic sensor configuration touse in health monitoring of smart structures was proposed. We havepresented three voltage-mode MISO second-order filters using CCIIs and one currentmodemultifunctional second-order filter using DO-CCCII.The MISO filters and multifunction filter transfer functions are analyzed forboth ideal and non-ideal cases. The validity of the voltage mode filters has been verifiedboth experimentally and through PSPICE simulations. On the other hand, the validityof the current mode filter has been verified only through PSPICE simulation. 100

The continuation of an active call is one of the most important qualitymeasurements in cellular systems. Handoff process enables a cellular system to providesuch a facility by transferring an active call from one cell to another. The principalparameters used to evaluate handoff techniques are: Forced termination probability,call blocking probability and call dropping probability. Different approaches areproposed and applied in order to achieve better handoff service. Mechanisms such asguard channels and queuing handoff calls decrease the forced termination probabilitywhile increasing the call blocking probability slightly. In order to increase systemperformance a second tier (macrocell layer) can be added on the top of existing tier(microcell layer) which utilizes the QoS parameters better.In this thesis, one-tier and two-tier cellular networks are modeled using singledimensional and 2-D Markov chains. In each model, a FIFO queue or a number ofguard channels is presented either in the microcell or the macrocell. The users areassigned to the appropriate layer due to their speeds, where the low speed users areassigned to the microcell and high speed users are assigned to the macrocell. Eachnetwork is then compared with the corresponding network to determine the effects ofthe queue and guard channels. Also, the effect of presenting the queue or guardchannels in the microcell or macrocell is investigated. 108

Thesis - Computer Engineering February 2003 Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Kemal FIDANBOYLU ABSTRACT One way of improving the performance of a cellular network is to build a second tier (layer) called the macrocell on top of the existing single-tier (microcell). Multi-tier cellular networks provide mobility solutions to both the high speed and low speed users. Since dropping an ongoing call when a mobile user moves from one cell to another is an undesirable event, several techniques have been previously proposed to solve this problem. In a cellular network, this problem can be solved by delaying the handoff call using a queue, until it's able to maintain a channel. In this thesis, new Markov models are proposed for single and two-tier cellular networks to solve the call dropping problem. All the proposed models have a FIFO queue with a different queue time for each type of user. The thesis presents the solutions, performance analysis and comparisons of the proposed models with previously done work. Furthermore, it's shown that the proposed two-tier models have superior performance over the single-tier model. IV ÖZET kalman süzgecinde hareketli pencereleme Kalman süzgecinde, bir algoritma türü olan Kalman süzgecinde hareketli pencereyle süzgeçleme yöntemi, dikdörtgen pencereye bağımlı kalınarak geliştirilen bir algoritma türüdür. Biz bu algoritmadaki bağımlılığı kırarak, genel bir algoritma kurup, isteğe bağlı pencere kullanma serbestliği getiren bir algoritma geliştirdik.Bu algoritmayı geliştirmek için bazı bağıntıları bilmemiz gerekmektedir.Bu nedenle ilk dört bölümde bu bağıntılar gruplanıp bölümler altında irdelenecek. Son bölüm olan beşinci bölümde algoritmanın ispatlan verilmiş, bilinen bir işlev üzerinden kestirim yapılarak simülasyon yapılmıştır. Simülasyon sonuçlan grafiksel olarak verilmiş LSM ve MW ile karşılaştırma yapılmıştır. Bu karşılaştırmada GMW özellikle sistem yanıtında daha başarılı olduğu görülmüştür. Sistem yanıtı dışında bilinen bir peryodik işaret üzerinden kestirim yapılarak karşılaştırma yapılmıştır.Bu karşılaştırma sonucunda geliştirdiğimiz algoritma daha başarılı olmuştur. SUMMARY A KALMAN FILTERING FOR A GENERALIZED MOVING WINDOW One of the Kalman filtering method names filtering with moving window is realized by using rectangular window. In this study the dependency of rectengular window is replaced with user defined window shape use. In the algorithmic evaluation phase we need some equations, for this reason first five chapters are focused on that relations. In the last chapter proof of algorithms are presented and simulation of algorithm is realized for a known process. Simulation result are depicted as graphical and coparision is done with LSM and MW. In this comparision it is observed that GMW gave more efficient result especially in system responce. A prediction is realized for known periodically signal, and this gave better result than system responce. 133

Bu sayede çoğu uygulama tek cihazla gerçekleşecek duruma gelinmiştir, bu da DSP'leri bünyesinde barındıran, çağımızın en popüler cihazlarından PC'Ii sistemlerdir. Endüstriyel uygulamaların yanında, ofis hatta ev uygulamalarında otomasyona geçilmektedir. Haberleşme de dahil olmak üzere, birçok alanda güçlü otomasyon sistemlerini mümkün hale getiren DSP ve PC'Ier insanların hizmetindedir. Telefonlu Cevap Sistemi, sekiz ayrı çağrıya aynı anda cevap vermekte olup telefonla birçok uygulamayı mümkün kılmaktadır. Bu uygulamalardan bazıları; Telefonlu ürün tanıtımı, rezervasyon, okullarda öğrencinin notlarının ve ders durumunun telefonla öğrenilmesi olarak sayılabilir. For that purpose, a system, that is more efficient (in the sense of line number, system flexibility and additional properties) than the others on the same class, has built in Türkiye's conditions In this study of thesis a computer telephony application realized by using PC and Digital Signal Processor: ADSP2181. This is a Telephone Answering Machine. This answering system can answer eight different calls at same moment and enables many other different applications. Product presentation, reservation and at schools learning their students' marks and position with the telephone, are examples of these applications. 151

INVESTIGATION OF (MOBILE) MILITARY PURPOSE RADIOLINK SYSTEM AND PARABOLOIDAL ANTENNA DESIGN In this project, I tried to explain structure of tropospheric scatter radio link and its peripheral equipments. There are two main subjects to investigate while studying. The first one, to search properties of troposphere, radio link system and its applications. The other one, to design and construct mobile paraboloidal antenna for this system. Reaching to these targets, the following purposes are investigated. 1 principles of microwave propagation system, 2 )Causes of choosing troposphere for communication system in military purposes, 3)Propernes, advantages and disadvantages of troposphere for communication system, 4 )The structure and properties of tropospheric scatter radio link, 5 )Effects of fading, diversity and noise, 6 )Using paraboloidal antennas and their types in military, 7) Mechanical and electromagnetic structure of antenna and its calculation at choosing pilot area where is east and southeast Anatolia, 8) Design of the paraboloidal antenna for mobile system and its construction on a land vehicle. In chapter 1, three sections are investigated. These are microwave propagation technique, tropospheric scatter radiolink system and structure of military communication system. The first section, microwave propagation is introduced then properties and radio wave characteristics are explained. The second section, the structure of tropospheric scatter radio link is investigated and compared with microwave propagation system. The third section is about the investigation of the system for military purposes. The system which is searched, is explained at military communication and its network system is designed with fixed and mobile corporations. In chapter 2, troposphere and tropospheric scatter radiolink are identified and its fflproperties and electrical calculations are searched.The first section, troposphere and its proporties are explained. The second section, tropospheric scatter radio link system is defined and electrical calculation is searched. There are several theories for tropospheric scattering. In chapter 3, the paraboloidal antennas which are used in communication systems and radars with military and civil purposes are designed and their electromagnetic properties are investigated. In chapter 4, using types of antennas are investigated and their electromagnetic and mechanical structure are searched. It is possible to classify reflector antennas according to the geometric form of the surface. Chapter 5 includes the system applications at choosing pilot area where is suitable for military applications. This chapter also contains the calculation of troposphere parameters for high and low power radio links and antenna characterises according to chapter 2 and 3. At last, computations are done for the construction of the reflector which is used on the paraboloidal antenna. Calculations, programs and constructions are presented from Appendix A to Appendix D. ÖZET Bu çalışmada, daha önceden geliştirilen ve mikrodalga devrelerinde kullanılan `Yeni bir zaman domeni sentez tekniği` ile bu tekniği kapsayan bilgisayar simülasyon programı TDNS yazılım paketi incelenmiş ve konuyla ilgili bazı geliştirmeler yapılmıştır. Bu geliştirmelerden ilki, teknikte kullanılan sonlandırma direnci ile ilgilidir. Transmisyon hat parametrelerinin belirlenmesinde, sonlandırma direncinin, sonuca bozucu yönde bir etkisi vardır. Bu sonlandırma direncinin devreye olan bozucu etkisi çeşitli simülasyonlarla incelenmiş ve giderilmesi için reiterasyon adı verilen bir yöntem geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen bu yöntem ile çok daha iyi simülasyon sonuçlan elde edilmiştir. Konuyla ilgili olarak yapılan ikinci geliştirme ise, kayıplı transmisyon hat sayısının belirlenmesi ile ilgilidir. TDNS yazılım paketinde transmisyon hat sayısı, programın başlangıcında dışardan elle girildiğinden, cevap dalga şeklinin, çok düzgün bir şekilde verilmesi ve daha önceden incelenmesi gerekmekteydi. Bu sıkıntıyı gidermek ve yazılımı daha akıllı bir hale getirebilmek için pencereleme adı verilen bir yöntem geliştirilmiştir. Bu sayede cevap dalga şeklinin, program içinde analizi yapılarak, transmisyon hat sayısının ve bunların başlangıç noktalarının belirlenmesi sağlanmıştır. SUMMARY In this thesis, several improvements to a previously developed time domain synthesis technique and simulation package (TDNS) have been made. One of the improvements was related to the load impedance. Through several simulations, it has been shown that the improper calculation of the load impedance resulted in a bad match between the simulated and experimental responses. In this thesis, a new reiteration technique has been proposed to solve this problem. With the proposed solution, the effect of the load impedance in the calculation of transmission line parameters has been completely removed. The second major improvement was in the Time Domain Network Synthesis (TDNS) Package. In the TDNS package developed previously, the number of transmission lines for synthesizing a time domain response waveform was given manually. In this thesis, a new windowing technique based on the response waveform has been developed for automatically determining the number of transmission lines. n 75

This rapid change, altered the expectations of the students, staff, society and industry from the higher education. Higher education institutions should both satisfy these expectations and assist in the development of the high technologies. The aim of this study is to describe the importance of Total Quality Management (TQM) in increasing the quality standards of higher education to the desired level, to introduce the basic principles of TQM, to present the methods and procedures related to these principles that can be helpful in implementing TQM in higher education, and to study the Total Quality efforts in Marmara University Faculty of Engineering. 133

ÖZET Bu çalışmada dünyada hızla kullanım alanı bulmaya başlayan fiber optik kablolar ve fiber optik haberleşme sistemlerinin yapısı, çalışması, haberleşmedeki yeri ve haberleşmede kullanılma sebepleri, kullanımının getirdiği avantajlar incelenmiştir. Bu doğrultuda ikinci bölümde fiber optik kabloların kullanım alanları ve diğer kablo sistemlerine olan üstünlüğü anlatılmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde fiber optik kabloların çalışma prensipleri, fiber optik kablo çeşitleri incelenmiş, kablo çeşitlerinin birbirlerine olan üstünlükleri vurgulanmıştır. Ayrıca fiber optik kabloların zayıflama parametreleri ve çeşitleri incelenmiştir. Dördüncü ve beşinci bölümde fiber optik sistemlerde kullanılan vericiler ve alıcılar anlatılmıştır. Alıcı ve vericilerin çeşitleri, çalışma prensipleri, performansları maliyetleri de gözönüne alınarak incelenmiştir. Altıncı bölümde fiber optik hat teçhizatlarından 140 Mbit/s hat teçhizatı ele alınmıştır. Bu sistemi oluşturan üniteler, blok şemaları ve çalışma prensipleri incelenmiştir. Yedinci ve son bölümde Acıbadem Telefon Santralı incelenmiş, bu santralın fiber optik sistemle bağlı olan hatlarının planı çıkarılarak bunlardan Acıbadem Kadıköy iletim hattı ele alınarak hesabı yapılmış ve ortalama maliyeti çıkarılmıştır. ABSTRACT In this thesis fiber optic cables and fiber optic communication system, which are very popular recently, have been examined for its working, using reasons in communication systems and its advantages. In the second chapter fiber optic cable application areas and advantages to other cable systems have been explained. In the third chapter fiber optic cable's working principles, their varieties and advantages to each other have been discussed. Also fiber optic cable attenuation parameters and types have been examined. In the fourth and fifth chapter receiver and transmitter, which are used in the fiber optic system, have been explained. Transmitter and receiver types, working principles, performances and their costs have been examined. In the sixth chapter system unit of 140 Mbit/s line equipment block diagram and its working principles have been examined in the detail. In the seventh and the last chapter Acıbadem telephone exchange has been examined and its fiber optic communication line cost calculation from Acıbadem to Kadıköy and its average cost have been made.
