2. Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Metallic Copper in TiO2–CaTiO3–Cu2O–Cu Anodes for Electrocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

The development of heterogeneous electrodes with high conductivity and electrocatalytic activity is a crucial goal. Achieving this using a simple and low‐cost method is essential for wastewater purification by anodic oxidation combined with peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Herein, TiO2–CaTiO3(CTO)‐Cu2O–Cu heterojunction electrodes are prepared by mixing CaCu3Ti4O12 with different amounts of graphene oxide (GO). The different mixtures are pressed into pellets and sintered under inert atmosphere at 1100 °C for 3 h. The obtained pellets are used as anodes for PMS activation in the electrocatalysis. The efficiency of paracetamol (PCM) removal reaches its maximum (93%) after 90 min using the CTO–Cu–5GO electrode in a solution containing 10 ppm PCM, 210 mL sodium sulfate, and 0.5 mM PMS. The higher amount of metallic copper in this anode promotes the generation of radicals to effectively degrade PCM. In optimal conditions (1.2 V versus Ag/AgCl, 1 mM PMS, and 10 ppm PCM), PCM is completely removed in 45 min. According to the quenching test results, •O2− and •OH are the radicals generated during PCM degradation, and •O2− plays the main role. In this work, insights are provided into the rational combination of different metal oxides with TiO2 as a heterostructure electrode to ensure high mineralization of pharmaceuticals by electrocatalysis.

3. The Impact of Embracing New Antenatal Screening Guidelines on Complications Related to Grand Multiparity in a Jordanian Tertiary Referral Center

Background: Universal screening, including thyroid dysfunction, gestational diabetes, and performing morphology and growth scans, was introduced in the healthcare system to improve perinatal care and pregnancy outcomes. Pregnancy-related complications are usually higher in grand multiparous women and their advanced maternal age. This study aimed to compare the impact of implementing a universal screening strategy protocol versus the selective screening for grand multiparous pregnant women aged ≥35 years on the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes and the associated risk factors. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of two groups (n = 89/group) of healthy grand multiparous women aged ≥35 years and who either delivered between 2011–2012 and underwent selective screening, or between 2016–2017 and were universally screened, was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Jordan University Hospital. Results: The universal screening protocol detected more cases of women with gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, and polyhydramnios 7, 4, and 9 more times, respectively, than the selective screening procedure. However, the results of universal screening tests for thyroid function and glucose tolerance were abnormal in only a small number of women. Furthermore, the cesarean section rate was reduced from 45% in the selective screening group to 1% in the universal screening group. No other significant differences in pregnancy or neonatal complications between the two groups were noted. Conclusions: Implementing new perinatal care protocols, including universal screening for thyroid disease and gestational diabetes, morphological and growth scans significantly decreased the rate of cesarean section in grand multiparous women with advanced maternal age, but did not affect pregnancy or neonatal complications. However, larger studies are needed to obtain more representative results among women in high-risk group for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and thyroid dysfunction.

4. Fears and uncertainties of expectant mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic: trying to reclaim control

Purpose The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has exponentially spread across the globe and formed one of the greatest health threats in history. Pregnant women are vulnerable, and their vulnerability is amplified by the associated containment measures of the pandemic. In this study, we aim to explore and describe expectant mothers’ experiences during the lockdown of COVID-19. Method A qualitative descriptive design was used. Eighteen pregnant and postpartum women were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling. Semi-structured phone call interviews were conducted by a female researcher. Braun and Clarke’s thematic data analysis was followed. Results Three main themes are developed: (1) Living with fears and uncertainties amid the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) Lockdown disrupting the normalcy of pregnancy, (3) Trying to control the chaos of life. Five subthemes underlined the three themes. Conclusion Findings portrayed expectant mothers’ uncertainties, fears, and the fragility of the healthcare systems in responding to mothers’ needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the pandemic has resulted in disruption of the normalcy of pregnancy, mothers sought adaptive means to protect themselves and maintain control. Governmental authorities and healthcare providers are directly responsible to maintain considerate perinatal care services for expectant mothers during lockdown and crises.

This study aims to validate the prophetic leadership scale by using a quantitative approach. 202 leaders were involved in this study. Data analysis technique that has been used for construct validation is factorial validation with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), a convergent validation, discriminant validation, and social desirability bias with Pearson correlation. There are 4 instruments used in this study, namely the measuring instrument of prophetic leadership, the measuring instrument of authentic leadership as a convergent validator, the measuring instrument of religiosity as a discriminant validator, and the measuring tool of social desirability as a validator of social appropriateness bias. The prophetic leadership measurement tool measures the same construct as the authentic leadership measurement tool, and measures different constructs from the religiosity measurement tool, and the prophetic leadership measurement tool has a social appropriateness bias or the respondent's tendency to give answers in accordance with norms. The findings raise a prospect that social desirability bias’s influences fitness indices in a scale’s validation.

In this study, we combined electrospinning of a large amount of halloysite (HNT, 95%) with nitriding to produce N-HNT-TiO2 composite nanofibers (N-H95T5 hereafter) to be used for acetaminophen (ACT) photodegradation. Investigation of the morphological and structural properties of the obtained materials did not highlight any significant difference in their morphological features and confirmed that nitrogen was evenly distributed in the samples. Photocatalytic tests under visible light showed that acetaminophen photodegraded faster in the presence of samples with nitrogen (N-H95T5) than without (H95T5 nanofibers). Moreover, the N-H95T5 nanocomposite photocatalytic activity did not change after repeated utilization (five cycles). The addition of scavengers during photocatalytic tests showed the key implication of OH•−, O2•− and h+ radicals in acetaminophen degradation. These results indicated that N–H95T5 composite nanofibers could be considered a cheap multifunctional material for photodegradation and could open new prospects for preparing tunable photocatalysts.

8. Dietary habits and Helicobacter pylori infection: a cross sectional study at a Lebanese hospital

Abstract Background To examine the association between dietary habits and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection among patients at a tertiary healthcare center in Lebanon. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 294 patients in 2016, at a hospital in Northern Lebanon. Participants were interviewed using a structured questionnaire to collect information on socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics; dietary habits were ascertained via a short food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). H. pylori status (positive vs. negative) was determined after upper GI endoscopy where gastric biopsy specimens from the antrum, body, and fundus region were collected and then sent for pathology analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to identify the association between socio-demographic, lifestyle, dietary and other health-related variables with H pylori infection. Results The prevalence of H. pylori infection was found to be 52.4% in this sample. Results of the multivariable analysis showed that H. pylori infection risk was higher among participants with a university education or above (OR = 2.74; CI = 1.17–6.44), those with a history of peptic ulcers (OR = 3.80; CI = 1.80–8.01), gastric adenocarcinoma (OR = 3.99; CI = 1.35–11.83) and vitamin D level below normal (OR = 29.14; CI = 11.77–72.13). In contrast, hyperglycemia was protective against H. pylori (OR = 0.18; CI = 0.03–0.89). No relationship between dietary habits and H. pylori infection was found in the adjusted analysis. Conclusions Socio-demographic and clinical variables are found to be associated with H. pylori, but not with dietary factors. Further studies are needed to investigate the effect of diet on H. pylori risk.

9. 3D Self-Supported Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanofiber Electrodes Incorporated Co/CoOx Nanoparticles: Application to Dyes Degradation by Electro-Fenton-Based Process

We developed free-standing nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber (CNF) electrodes incorporating Co/CoOx nanoparticles (NPs) as a new cathode material for removing Acid Orange 7 (AO7; a dye for wool) from wastewater by the heterogeneous electro-Fenton reaction. We produced the free-standing N-doped CNF electrodes by electrospinning a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and cobalt acetate solution followed by thermal carbonation of the cobalt acetate/PAN nanofibers under a nitrogen atmosphere. We then investigated electro-Fenton-based removal of AO7 from wastewater with the free-standing N-doped-CNFs-Co/CoOx electrodes, in the presence or not of Fe2+ ions as a co-catalyst. The electrochemical analysis showed the high stability of the prepared N-doped-CNF-Co/CoOx electrodes in electrochemical oxidation experiments with excellent degradation of AO7 (20 mM) at acidic to near neutral pH values (3 and 6). Electro-Fenton oxidation at 10 mA/cm2 direct current for 40 min using the N-doped-CNF-Co/CoOx electrodes loaded with 25 wt% of Co/CoOx NPs led to complete AO7 solution decolorization with total organic carbon (TOC) removal values of 92.4% at pH 3 and 93.3% at pH 6. The newly developed N-doped-CNF-Co/CoOx electrodes are an effective alternative technique for wastewater pre-treatment before the biological treatment.

10. Organic Fouling Impact in a Direct Contact Membrane Distillation System Treating Wastewater: Experimental Observations and Modeling Approach

This study aims to investigate the effect of operational conditions on organic fouling occurring in a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) system used to treat wastewater. A mixed solution of sodium alginate (SA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a feed solution to simulate polysaccharides and proteins, respectively, assumed as the main organic foulants. The permeate flux was observed at two feed temperatures 35 and 50 °C, as well as three feed solution pH 4, 6, and 8. Higher permeate flux was observed for higher feed temperature, which allows higher vapor pressure. At higher pH, a smaller particle size was detected with lower permeate flux. A mathematical model based on mass balance was developed to simulate permeate flux with time by assuming (i) the cake formation controlled by attachment and detachment of foulant materials and (ii) the increase in specific cake resistance, the function of the cake porosity, as the main mechanisms controlling membrane fouling to investigate the fouling mechanism responsible of permeate flux decline. The model fitted well with the experimental data with R2 superior to 0.9. High specific cake resistance fostered by small particle size would be responsible for the low permeate flux observed at pH 8.

11. Improvement of Membrane Distillation Using PVDF Membrane Incorporated with TiO2 Modified by Silane and Optimization of Fabricating Conditions

The objectives in this study are to improve the performance of PVDF membrane by incorporating TiO2 and silane at various dosages and optimize fabricating conditions by using response surface methodology (RSM) for membrane distillation (MD) application. The PVDF membrane was synthesized by phase inversion method using various TiO2, silane and polymer concentrations. Membranes were characterized by performing contact angle measurements, SEM and FTIR observations. Ammonia rejection and permeate flux were measured by operating a direct contact distillation module treating ammonium chloride solution. A PVDF membrane created by adding TiO2 modified by silane improved membrane hydrophobicity. However, the effect of silane on membrane hydrophobicity was less pronounced at higher TiO2 concentrations. Highest ammonium rejection was associated with the highest membrane hydrophobicity. RSM analysis showed that fabricating conditions to achieve highest flux (10.10 L/m2·h) and ammonium rejection (100.0%) could be obtained at 31.3% silane, 2.50% TiO2, and 15.48% polymer concentrations. With a PVDF-TiO2 composite membrane for MD application, the effect of TiO2 was dependent upon silane concentration. Increasing silane concentration improved membrane hydrophobicity and ammonium rejection. RSM analysis was found to bea useful way to explore optimum fabricating conditions of membranes for the permeate flux and ammonium rejection in MD.

12. Unveiling an atypical meningioma amidst stroke symptoms: importance of accurate diagnosis and comprehensive follow-up: A case report.

Meningiomas are common brain tumors that are classified as either benign, atypical, or malignant. This case involves a 75-year-old woman with a medical history of ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. She was diagnosed with an atypical meningioma while being evaluated for symptoms related to a stroke. Upon her presentation at the hospital, the patient displayed symptoms such as loss of motor function on the right side of her body, weakness, dysphagia, and aphasia, indicating a possible stroke. Imaging tests confirmed both the stroke symptoms and the presence of an atypical meningioma. The primary focus of her treatment was addressing the stroke symptoms. Despite being asymptomatic for the meningioma, the patient opted for conservative treatment and declined invasive procedures. Her decision was respected, and a plan was put in place for regular monitoring and counseling regarding the meningioma. This case emphasizes the significance of tailored treatment decisions in complicated clinical situations involving incidental brain tumors., (© 2024 The Authors. 13. The inclination of undergraduate students at King Edward Medical University towards research and its perceived barriers and facilitators; a cross-sectional study.

Introduction: Research participation by medical students in the early years of their medical studies can change their attitude towards research conduction in the years to come. To identify the shortcomings in our system, it is essential to determine the perception, tendencies, and knowledge of Pakistani medical students about the field of research., Methods: This survey-based cross-sectional study was conducted at KING EDWARD MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, Lahore with 305 MBBS students. The relevant data for the study was collected in the shape of a pretested, semi-structured questionnaire assembled in the form of google form. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 16., Results: 36.7% of the final year students have conducted research, however, the percentage comes down to 0% and 10.6% for 1st and 2nd year respectively. 50.6% of the final year students claimed they had a good grip on the steps involved in the conduction of research while the percentage for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year was 7.1%, 21.3%, 20.9%, and 51.2% respectively. More than 70% of the participants from each year considered research as an important help for critical thinking and improvement in patients' care., Discussion: The reasons for the interest of the students in research as indicated by our study include improvement in the professional standards, help in becoming a better self-directed learner, and opportunities for team-based learning via research conduction. Academic overload, lack of structured research training, and difficulty in publishing are the biggest barriers to the conduction of research as recognized by our study., Conclusion: Conduction of research seminars, organizing platforms for communication between students and teaching staff, restructuring of the medical curriculum, and providing students with the required technical staff can help us overcome these hurdles., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2022 The Authors. 14. Biochemical and Structural Characterization of Thermostable GH159 Glycoside Hydrolases Exhibiting α-L-Arabinofuranosidase Activity.

- Abstract
Functional, biochemical, and preliminary structural properties are reported for three glycoside hydrolases of the recently described glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 159. The genes were cloned from the genomic sequences of different Caldicellulosiruptor strains. This study extends the spectrum of functions of GH159 enzymes. The only activity previously reported for GH159 was hydrolytic activity on β-galactofuranosides. Activity screening using a set of para -nitrophenyl ( p NP) glycosides suggested additional arabinosidase activity on substrates with arabinosyl residues, which has not been previously reported for members of GH159. Even though the thermophilic enzymes investigated- Cs_ Gaf159A, Ch_ Gaf159A, and Ck _Gaf159A-cleaved p NP-α-l-arabinofuranoside, they were only weakly active on arabinogalactan, and they did not cleave arabinose from arabinan, arabinoxylan, or gum arabic. However, the enzymes were able to hydrolyze the α-1,3-linkage in different arabinoxylan-derived oligosaccharides (AXOS) with arabinosylated xylose at the non-reducing end (A
3 X, A2,3 XX), suggesting their role in the intracellular hydrolysis of oligosaccharides. Crystallization and structural analysis of the apo form of one of the Caldicellulosiruptor enzymes, Ch _Gaf159A, enabled the elucidation of the first 3D structure of a GH159 member. This work revealed a five-bladed β-propeller structure for GH159 enzymes. The 3D structure and its substrate-binding pocket also provides an explanation at the molecular level for the observed exo-activity of the enzyme. Furthermore, the structural data enabled the prediction of the catalytic amino acids. 15. Parvovirus b19-Induced Acute Hepatitis With Hepatosplenomegaly and Polyarthropathy.

- Abstract
Parvovirus B19 infection can present with myriads of clinical diseases and syndromes; hepatitis and polyarthropathy are a few of these examples. Parvovirus frequently affects children but this condition has also been reported in adults. The present case report discusses a case of a 43-year-old female who presented to the outpatient department (OPD) with complaints of high-grade fever and pain in multiple joints of her body for three days. On examination, stiffness and swelling of the hand, knees, wrist, and ankles were noted. Laboratory investigations showed highly elevated aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and bilirubin. Electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiogram (ECHO) findings were unremarkable. PCR testing showed the presence of parvovirus. Parvovirus B19 infection led to the development of acute hepatitis, which appeared as yellowing of skin (jaundice) and led to hepatosplenomegaly. Parvovirus-induced polyarthropathy was also observed in the patient. The patient was managed with a parenteral course of ceftriaxone, paracetamol, and a normal saline infusion. Anti-viral drugs were also prescribed to the patient including ribavirin and pegylated interferon. This case study will explore how the patient was diagnosed and managed with conventional therapy and anti-viral to relieve parvovirus-induced hepatitis with hepatosplenomegaly and polyarthritis. Acute hepatitis can be caused by viruses and other noninfectious causes, all of which must be cleared out to avoid chronic disease development. 16. The Surfactin-Like Lipopeptides From Bacillus spp.: Natural Biodiversity and Synthetic Biology for a Broader Application Range.

Surfactin is a lipoheptapeptide produced by several Bacillus species and identified for the first time in 1969. At first, the biosynthesis of this remarkable biosurfactant was described in this review. The peptide moiety of the surfactin is synthesized using huge multienzymatic proteins called NonRibosomal Peptide Synthetases. This mechanism is responsible for the peptide biodiversity of the members of the surfactin family. In addition, on the fatty acid side, fifteen different isoforms (from C12 to C17) can be incorporated so increasing the number of the surfactin-like biomolecules. The review also highlights the last development in metabolic modeling and engineering and in synthetic biology to direct surfactin biosynthesis but also to generate novel derivatives. This large set of different biomolecules leads to a broad spectrum of physico-chemical properties and biological activities. The last parts of the review summarized the numerous studies related to the production processes optimization as well as the approaches developed to increase the surfactin productivity of Bacillus cells taking into account the different steps of its biosynthesis from gene transcription to surfactin degradation in the culture medium., Competing Interests: PJ is a co-founder of Lipofabrik and Lipofabrik Belgium and a member of the scientific advisory board of both companies. 13 -apocarotenoids (norisoprenoids) are carotenoid-derived oxidation products that perform important physiological functions in plants. Although their biosynthetic pathways have been extensively studied, their metabolism including glycosylation remains poorly understood. Candidate uridine-diphosphate glycosyltransferase genes ( UGTs ) were selected based on their high transcript abundance in comparison with other UGTs in vegetative tissues of Nicotiana benthamiana and peppermint ( Mentha × piperita ), as these tissues are rich sources of apocarotenoid glucosides. Hydroxylated C13 -apocarotenol substrates were produced by P450-catalyzed biotransformation and microbial/plant enzyme systems were established for the synthesis of glycosides. Natural substrates were identified by physiological aglycone libraries prepared from isolated plant glycosides. In total, we identified six UGTs that catalyze the glucosylation of C13 -apocarotenols, where Glc is bound either to the cyclohexene ring or the butane side chain. MpUGT86C10 is a superior novel enzyme that catalyzes the glucosylation of allelopathic 3-hydroxy- α -damascone, 3-oxo- α -ionol, 3-oxo-7,8-dihydro- α -ionol (Blumenol C), and 3-hydroxy-7,8-dihydro- β -ionol, whereas a germination test demonstrated the higher phytotoxic potential of a norisoprenoid glucoside in comparison to its aglycone. Glycosylation of C13 -apocarotenoids has several functions in plants, including increased allelopathic activity of the aglycone, facilitating exudation by roots and allowing symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The results enable in-depth analysis of the roles of glycosylated norisoprenoid allelochemicals, the physiological functions of apocarotenoids during arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization, and the associated maintenance of carotenoid homeostasis., (© 2020 American Society of Plant Biologists. 18. Effect of Thermophilic Nitrate Reduction on Sulfide Production in High Temperature Oil Reservoir Samples.

- Abstract
Oil fields can experience souring, the reduction of sulfate to sulfide by sulfate-reducing microorganisms. At the Terra Nova oil field near Canada's east coast, with a reservoir temperature of 95°C, souring was indicated by increased hydrogen sulfide in produced waters (PW). Microbial community analysis by 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed the hyperthermophilic sulfate-reducing archaeon Archaeoglobus in Terra Nova PWs. Growth enrichments in sulfate-containing media at 55-70°C with lactate or volatile fatty acids yielded the thermophilic sulfate-reducing bacterium (SRB) Desulfotomaculum . Enrichments at 30-45°C in nitrate-containing media indicated the presence of mesophilic nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB), which reduce nitrate without accumulation of nitrite, likely to N
2 . Thermophilic NRB (tNRB) of the genera Marinobacter and Geobacillus were detected and isolated at 30-50°C and 40-65°C, respectively, and only reduced nitrate to nitrite. Added nitrite strongly inhibited the isolated thermophilic SRB (tSRB) and tNRB and SRB could not be maintained in co-culture. Inhibition of tSRB by nitrate in batch and continuous cultures required inoculation with tNRB. The results suggest that nitrate injected into Terra Nova is reduced to N2 at temperatures up to 45°C but to nitrite only in zones from 45 to 65°C. Since the hotter zones of the reservoir (65-80°C) are inhabited by thermophilic and hyperthermophilic sulfate reducers, souring at these temperatures might be prevented by nitrite production if nitrate-reducing zones of the system could be maintained at 45-65°C.- Published
