Abstract

Anche se la recente ricusazione della dottrina della scoperta da parte del Vaticano è davvero benvenuta, il silenzio in merito a qualsiasi responsabilità politica per quelle bolle papali, vecchie di 500 anni, che autorizzavano le potenze coloniali a impadronirsi delle terre indigene, significa che la battaglia è vinta solo a metà. Ancor più negativamente, il fatto che il Vaticano abbia evitato ogni riferimento al collegamento tra i crimini di massa avallati contro i non cristiani e le loro conseguenze, indica che il bersaglio è stato mancato. Le bolle, infatti, sono state emanate dai «rappresentanti di Dio sulla Terra» e una tale negazione implicita è una debolezza strutturale che difficilmente potrebbe completare quella «architettura della riconciliazione» a cui si dice Papa Francesco miri. Questo saggio si propone di rievocare le testimonianze storiche della responsabilità diretta e indiretta del Papato, discutendo le circostanze che sono all'origine dell’organizzazione gerarchica di questo mondo, che ha avuto un impatto non solo sul continente americano ma anche su quello africano, con conseguenze permanenti su generazioni dei suoi popoli e dei loro discendenti nella diaspora.

Abstract

Based on criticisms raised in the past by researchers about the effectiveness of the design rules reported in the European seismic code for the design of concentrically braced frames, a new design procedure has been proposed and included in the upcoming version of Eurocode 8. The upcoming version of Eurocode 8 is in the enquiry stage. Hence, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of the design procedure reported in the code using accurate numerical models and seismic inputs. In the present paper, a four-story building with concentrically braced frames in the chevron configuration is designed according to the upcoming version of Eurocode 8. A seismic performance assessment is carried out by the means of multiple-stripe analyses performed on refined numerical models. The seismic input is defined based on one-dimensional local site response analyses. The numerical analyses prove that the use of local site response analysis to properly account for the soil-filtering effects is of paramount importance, and that the design procedure reported in the upcoming version of Eurocode 8 for chevron concentrically braced frames leads to reasonably low probabilities of exceeding the considered limit states.

Abstract

Surface-sensitive vibrational spectroscopy is a common tool for measuring molecular organization and intermolecular interactions at interfaces. Peak intensity ratios are typically used to extract molecular information from one-dimensional spectra but vibrational coupling between surfactant molecules can manifest as signal depletion in one-dimensional spectra. Through a combination of experiment and theory, we demonstrate the emergence of vibrational exciton delocalization in infrared reflection-absorption spectra of soluble and insoluble surfactants at the air/water interface. Vibrational coupling causes a significant decrease in peak intensities corresponding to C-F vibrational modes of perfluorooctanoic acid molecules. Vibrational excitons also form between arachidic acid surfactants within a compressed monolayer, manifesting as signal reduction of C-H stretching modes. Ionic composition of the aqueous phase impacts surfactant intermolecular distance, thereby modulating vibrational coupling strength between surfactants. Our results serve as a cautionary tale against employing alkyl and fluoroalkyl vibrational peak intensities as proxies for concentration, although such analysis is ubiquitous in interface science.

7. The role of soil in structure response of a building damaged by the 26 December 2018 earthquake in Italy

Abstract

Local soil conditions can significantly modify the seismic motion expected on the soil surface. In most cases, the indications concerning the influence of the underlying soil provided by the in-force European and Italian Building Codes underestimate the real seismic amplification effects. For this reason, numerical analyses of the local seismic response (LSR) have been encouraged to estimate the soil filtering effects. These analyses are generally performed in free-field conditions, ignoring the presence of superstructures and, therefore, the effects of dynamic soil-structure interaction (DSSI). Moreover, many studies on DSSI are characterised by a sophisticated modelling of the structure and an approximate modelling of the soil (using springs and dashpots at the foundation level); while others are characterised by a sophisticated modelling of the soil and an approximate modelling of the structure (considered as a simple linear elastic structure or a single degree of freedom system). This paper presents a set of finite element method (FEM) analyses on a fully-coupled soil-structure system for a reinforced concrete building located in Fleri (Catania, Italy). The building, designed for gravity loads only, was severely damaged during the 26 December 2018 earthquake. The soil was modelled considering an equivalent visco-elastic behaviour, while the structure was modelled assuming both the visco-elastic and visco-inelastic behaviours. The comparison made between the results of the FEM analyses and the observed damage is valuable.

9. HaNDL syndrome: a reversible cerebral vasoconstriction triggered by an infection? A case report and a case-based review

Abstract

Abstract Background The syndrome of transient Headache and Neurological Deficits with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Lymphocytosis (HaNDL) is classified among secondary headaches attributed to “non-infectious, inflammatory intracranial disease”. Despite its classification among secondary headaches, the current definition of HaNDL does not contemplate a causal agent. Thus, the aetiology, as well as the pathogenesis of both the headache and the transient focal deficits, remains unknown. Case presentation We describe a 29-year-old healthy male developing episodes of thunderclap headaches associated with recurrence of hemiparesis/hemi-paraesthesia; CSF showed lymphocytosis 200/mm3 and increased albumin; brain MRI revealed widespread leptomeningeal enhancement and a non-enhancing, circular diffusion restriction in the splenium of corpus callosum. Screening for neurotropic pathogens detected Epstein-Barr (EBV) DNA in serum and CSF, interpreted as a primary EBV infection once the seroconversion of EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA) IgM to IgG was proven on follow-up. Transcranial Doppler detected, during headache, increased flow velocity in middle cerebral arteries, possibly indicating vasospasm. Oral nimodipine was administered, with prompt clinical recovery, resolution of CSF/MRI abnormalities, and normalization of flow velocities in middle cerebral arteries. Case-based review Although the definition of HaNDL does not contemplate a viral trigger or abnormal brain imaging, we found other literature cases of HaNDL associated with direct or indirect signs of CNS infection. Conclusions At least in a proportion of patients, a viral aetiology may have a role in HaNDL. Whatever the aetiology, we suggest that the pathogenic mechanism may rely on the (viral or other) agent ultimately triggering cerebral vasoconstriction, which would explain both focal symptoms and headache. Calcium channel blockers might be a therapeutic option.

Abstract

A hopeful World is wondering whether COP27, to be held next November in Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt), has the potential to foster the much-needed change of mindset that determined the disillusion of the previous International Conferences organized by the UNFCCC, as the regional mid-term MENA conference on climate change, held last March in Dubai, seemed to stagnate in lamentations, instead of steering into action. In the meantime, Africa is going through an escalation among syndemics, diminished access to food, and local crises fuelled by climate change, whose ticking bomb is rhythmed by floods and droughts, while the new need of the global North for energy supplies could determine economic opportunities but also negative impacts on African decarbonization and mitigating actions. There is a shared concern on whom and how to push for immediate political pressures in order not to lose the little thrust that we had gained.

Abstract

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) are two neurological diseases which, respectively, and primarily affect motor neurons and frontotemporal lobes. Although they can lead to different signs and symptoms, it is now evident that these two pathologies form a continuum and that hallmarks of both diseases can be present within the same person in the so-called ALS-FTD spectrum. Many studies have focused on the genetic overlap of these pathologies and it is now clear that different genes, such as C9orf72, TARDBP, SQSTM1, FUS, and p97/VCP can be mutated in both the diseases. VCP was one of the first genes associated with both FTD and ALS representing an early example of gene overlapping. VCP belongs to the type II AAA (ATPases Associated with diverse cellular activities) family and is involved in ubiquitinated proteins degradation, autophagy, lysosomal clearance and mitochondrial quality control. Since its numerous roles, mutations in this gene lead to different pathological features, first and foremost TDP-43 mislocalization. This review aims to outline recent findings on VCP roles and on how its mutations are linked to the neuropathology of ALS and FTD.

Abstract

After the South African National Assembly approval of the motion by the Economic Freedom Fighters to allow the State to expropriate land without awarding compensation (LEWC), the access of landless black people to a new redistribution seemed on the verge of being resolved once and forever. Even the public auditions to approve the amendment of the property clause in section 25 of the Constitution, seen as an obstacle to expropriation procedures, have been completed. But high expectations are now going to be dramatically deluded. Especially those of shack dwellers, who in informal settlements in the urban outskirts, struggle against the perpetuation of apartheid, and claim the right to move into estates closer to the city centers and the economic opportunities they offer. Due to the spread of Covid-19, evictions to de-densify the informal settlements and transfers of thousands of families in new “ghettos” are under way. Hence, heavy investments to build new quarters in the suburbs are diverting funds from improving LEWC and are likely to fuel a further institutional crisis, within the syndemic one South Africa will be suffering in months to come. The essay starts and concludes with a perspective from the suburbs of Cape Town.

18. The role of soil in structure response of a building damaged by the 26 December 2018 earthquake in Italy

Abstract

Local soil conditions can significantly modify the seismic motion expected on the soil surface. In most cases, the indications concerning the influence of the underlying soil provided by the in-force European and Italian Building Codes underestimate the real seismic amplification effects. For this reason, numerical analyses of the local seismic response (LSR) have been encouraged to estimate the soil filtering effects. These analyses are generally performed in free-field conditions, ignoring the presence of superstructures and, therefore, the effects of dynamic soil-structure interaction (DSSI). Moreover, many studies on DSSI are characterised by a sophisticated modelling of the structure and an approximate modelling of the soil (using springs and dashpots at the foundation level); while others are characterised by a sophisticated modelling of the soil and an approximate modelling of the structure (considered as a simple linear elastic structure or a single degree of freedom system). This paper presents a set of finite element method (FEM) analyses on a fully-coupled soil-structure system for a reinforced concrete building located in Fleri (Catania, Italy). The building, designed for gravity loads only, was severely damaged during the 26 December 2018 earthquake. The soil was modelled considering an equivalent visco-elastic behaviour, while the structure was modelled assuming both the visco-elastic and visco-inelastic behaviours. The comparison made between the results of the FEM analyses and the observed damage is valuable.

30. Tracking Sulfonated Polystyrene Diffusion in a Chitosan/Carboxymethyl Cellulose Layer-by-Layer Film: Exploring the Internal Architecture of Nanocoatings

Abstract

Since chitosan presents the ability to interact with a wide range of molecules, it has been one of the most popular natural polymers for the construction of layer-by-layer thin films. In this study, depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to track the diffusion of sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) in carboxymethyl cellulose/chitosan (CMC/Chi) multilayers. Our findings suggest that the CMC/Chi film does not constitute an electrostatic barrier sufficient to block diffusion of SPS, and that diffusion can be controlled by adjusting the diffusion time and the molecular weight of the polymers that compose the CMC/Chi system. In addition to monitoring the diffusion, it was also possible to observe a process of preferential interaction between Chi and SPS. Thus, the nitrogen N 1s peak, due to functional groups found exclusively in chitosan chains, was the key factor to identifying the molecular interactions involving chitosan and the different polyanions. Accordingly, the presence of a strong polyanion such as SPS shifts the N 1s peak to a higher level of binding energy. Such results highlight that understanding the fundamentals of polymer interactions is a major step to fine-tuning the internal architecture of LbL structures for specific applications (e.g., drug release).

40. A rare surgical complication of Crohn's diseases: free peritoneal perforation

Abstract

Free peritoneal perforation is a rare complication of Crohn's disease.We evaluated the incidence of free peritoneal perforation among 208 patients with Crohn's disease surgically treated in the period 1992-2000.Five patients (2.4%) suffered from free peritoneal perforation. In 1 patient free peritoneal perforation was the first symptom of Crohn's disease. In 3 cases the perforation was in the small bowel and in 2 in the large bowel. All patients underwent surgery: all cases had a resection of the involved bowel and in two cases an ileostomy was performed in order to prevent severe peritonitis. We did not observed mortality or major complications.Free peritoneal perforation is rare with about 100 cases reported in literature. No correlation seems to exist with previous corticosteroid treatment. The surgical treatment is mandatory. Simple suture should be avoided. The most appropriate treatment, whenever it is feasible, is resection of the involved bowel with immediate or, in case of severe sepsis, delayed anastomosis.

42. Trace Metal Enrichment Driven by Phosphate Functional Group Binding Selectivity

Abstract

Trace metals have been found to be selectively enriched in the sea surface microlayer (SSML) due to association with organics, but the underlying cause of this selectivity has not been as well studied. Therefore, a systematic cation affinity study on surfactant lipids containing various functional headgroups (‐OH, ‐H2PO4, ‐COOH, ‐N(CH3)2) was conducted at pH 3 to further explain cation enrichment selectivity using Brewster angle microscopy, surface tension salt titration, and infrared‐reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). At pH 3, the headgroups chosen are neutral, and therefore the variability of surface charge on binding is eliminated. The phosphate ester headgroup was observed to exhibit the strongest trace metal binding, followed by the carboxylic acid headgroup. Hydroxy and dimethylamine headgroups did not exhibit significant trace metal binding. By applying the Langmuir‐Szyszkowski model to the surface tension data, the cation surface binding affinities for phosphatidic acid were determined, with Al3+> Fe3+> Zn2+> Mg2+> Ni2+> Mn2+∼ Ca2+, an order not predicted from bulk properties such as solid formation constants of metal‐phosphonates. Thus cation binding to surface active organic molecules with phosphate ester headgroups is indicated to be a significant source of trace metal enrichment within the SSML.
