This study investigated the impact of service learning using quantitative and qualitative methods. Forty-one First Year Experience and capstone students completed the Civic Attitudes and Skills Questionnaire (CASQ) at the term's beginning and end. Although the CASQ total and subscores did not differ, capstone students scored higher on CASQ measures, suggesting better civic attitudes and skills. Community partners completed an impact survey, reporting overall benefits. Instructors' journals revealed benefits and challenges to implementing service learning.

This article traces a community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) project which engaged local non-profits and the immigrant community in Flint, Michigan, USA, to identify areas for growth in support of local immigrant-background residents. Collaborative data-gathering began in 2015 with the creation of a community asset map which outlined existing services available to immigrants, as well as potential areas for growth. This was followed by a series of linguistically and culturally sensitive focus groups with immigrant-background participants. The use of CBPAR was foundational to this study because it engaged the local community in the needs analysis process and resulted in the development of grassroots ESOL programming. The article outlines steps and recommendations for community-based participatory ESOL needs analysis that can be applied to other geographical regions and ESOL programmes.

This study analyzes the methods that teachers employ in written feedback to student writing and how the policies of the program and the teachers' embodied histories influence the strategies used. Data were gathered from 2 novice teachers as they taught their first graduate-level ESL writing course and consist of the teachers' feedback in addition to interviews and personal narratives. Participants were educated in the same MA TESOL program and taught the same course; however, striking similarities and differences in their written feedback indicate identity and personal history are as important as program policies in determining the methods and content of the feedback. Implications for novice teacher development are that reflective teaching should include reflections on both beliefs and classroom practices to identify misalignments between the two.

Higher education institutions in the United States are experiencing tremendous growth of international students. This essay serves as a case study of how an institution is addressing its growth from a handful of international students to nearly 10% of its total student population in a decade. The authors describe writing instruction and the lack of writing instruction related services for international students on campus before and during the increase in international student numbers. They then describe the process of developing separate workshops for students and faculty based on survey results and the creation of a Bridge Program to help prepare international students for institutional writing expectations. Throughout this article, the process of internationalization through recruitment of international students is critically examined. The authors focus on the changing policies and pedagogies associated with this growth, faculty reactions to and support for addressing the needs of this new population, and students' own reflections on their linguistic preparedness in light of the rigors of university expectations. The article concludes with an analysis of the roles played by the students, faculty, and institutional policies in internationalization efforts as they are related to the creation of "insiders" and "outsiders" on college campuses.
