6. Conceptualisation of transfer and translation in modern linguistics

Abstract

This paper studies the vision of translation developed within structuralism, cross-cultural studies, and semiotics and compares them with the theory of cultural transfers. The authors identify key notions of each theory or school. Some of these notions — code, opposition, discretion, and border — permeate the scientific vocabulary of many linguistic schools. However, these terms easily acquire new meanings and interpretations in research works. The continuity of communication space is key to semiotic and cultural transfer approaches. The paper shows how scholars conceptualise translation and how the concept of translation transforms. The differences between the above-mentioned schools relate to the way translation is perceived; they also show which cognitive operations or procedures each linguistic paradigm identifies as priority ones. The understanding of translation corresponds to different cognitive operations — shared knowledge is important for structuralism, perspectivisation is relevant to cross-cultural studies, and blending is crucial for cultural transfer studies.

Abstract

This article presents preliminary results of a project studying multilingualism in world poetry. Multilingual interactions are particularly persistent in the contexts where either writers (poets) exist in multilingual sociocultural environments or they are moving from one country to another throughout their literary career. Existing in two or more cultural and/or linguistic spaces at the same time and thus making transfers across the boundaries of different languages easier, more efficient, and more conscious, multilingual poets serve as exemplary agents of cultural transfer. This study analyses different cases of poetic multilingualism where poets who can speak and write freely in two or more languages and intentionally create either variants of the same text in two languages or different poems in two separate languages. The author outlines a geographical map, locating areas where multilingual poetic production is or was most active. The scope of the mapping is limited to European countries and areas with bilingual or multilingual population. The article also discusses theoretical and practical challenges in mapping poetic multilingualism in Europe.

Abstract

This paper dwells upon COVID-19-related efforts of the Center for Sports Medicine, Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia. The Agency has the following precautions in place: regular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of athletes and staff; double PCR testing before going to training camps or medical examinations; isolating athletes and their traceable contacts when COVID is suspected; observation and isolation wards set up at training camp venues. Athlete vaccination has begun. Athletes are provided online advice on health, diet, and exercising plus special care for chronically ill athletes and remote psychological counseling. Athletes recovering from COVID-19 are offered rehabilitation programs and doctor-supervised return to training. Specialists of the Research Department at FMBA’s Center for Sports Medicine carried out a research dedicated to the prevalence of COVID-19 and different variants of its course in Russian athletes. The study period lasted from March to December 2020. A total of 27,438 records were analyzed.
