The Vera C. Rubin Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will conduct an unprecedented optical survey of the southern sky, imaging the entire available sky every few nights for 10 years. To achieve its ambitious science goals of probing dark energy and dark matter, mapping the Milky Way, and exploring the transient optical sky, the systematic errors in the LSST data must be exquisitely controlled. Instrument signature removal (ISR) is a critical early step in LSST data processing to remove inherent camera effects from the raw images and produce accurate representations of the incoming light. This paper describes the current state of the ISR pipelines implemented in the LSST Science Pipelines software. The key steps in ISR are outlined, and the process of generating and verifying the necessary calibration products to carry out ISR is also discussed. Finally, an overview is given of how the Rubin data management system utilizes a data Butler and calibration collections to organize datasets and match images to appropriate calibrations during processing. We highlight the role of weak lensing measurements from current and upcoming stage-IV imaging surveys in the search for cosmic inflation, specifically in measuring the scalar spectral index $n_s$. To do so, we combine the Dark Energy Survey 3 years of observation weak lensing and clustering data with BICEP/Keck, Planck and Sloan Digital Sky Survey data in $r\Lambda$CDM where $r$ is the tensor-to-scalar ratio. While there is no significant improvement in constraining power, we obtain a 1$\sigma$ shift on $n_s$. Additionally, we forecast a weak lensing and clustering data vector from the 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and show its combination with current data would improve their $n_s$ constraints by 25$\%$ in $r\Lambda$CDM., Comment: submitted to journal

Deep generative models including generative adversarial networks (GANs) are powerful unsupervised tools in learning the distributions of data sets. Building a simple GAN architecture in PyTorch and training on the CANDELS data set, we generate galaxy images with the Hubble Space Telescope resolution starting from a noise vector. We proceed by modifying the GAN architecture to improve the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam ground-based images by increasing their resolution to the HST resolution. We use the super resolution GAN on a large sample of blended galaxies which we create using CANDELS cutouts. In our simulated blend sample, $\sim 20 \%$ would unrecognizably be blended even in the HST resolution cutouts. In the HSC-like cutouts this fraction rises to $\sim 90\%$. With our modified GAN we can lower this value to $\sim 50\%$. We quantify the blending fraction in the high, low and GAN resolutions over the whole manifold of angular separation, flux ratios, sizes and redshift difference between the two blended objects. The two peaks found by the GAN deblender result in ten times improvement in the photometry measurement of the blended objects. Modifying the architecture of the GAN, we also train a Multi-wavelength GAN with seven band optical+NIR HST cutouts. This multi-wavelength GAN improves the fraction of detected blends by another $\sim 10\%$ compared to the single-band GAN. This is most beneficial to the current and future precision cosmology experiments (e.g., LSST, SPHEREx, Euclid, Roman), specifically those relying on weak gravitational lensing, where blending is a major source of systematic error., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged], Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 224 pages, 27 figures. We propose to use Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) to map the impact of physical models onto observables. Using this approach, we are be able to determine how theories relate to each other given their signatures. In cosmology this will be particularly useful to determine cosmological models (such as dark energy, modified gravity or inflationary models) that should be tested by the new generation of experiments. As a first example, we apply this approach to the representation of a subset of the space of modified gravity theories probed by cosmic shear. We therefore train a SOM on shear correlation functions in the $f(R)$, dilaton and symmetron models. The results indicate these three theories have similar signatures on shear for small values of their parameters but the dilaton has different signature for higher values. We also show that modified gravity (especially the dilaton model) has a different impact on cosmic shear compared to a dynamical dark energy so both need to be tested by galaxy surveys., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Using Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) year 1 data, we perform the first $k$-cut cosmic shear analysis constraining both $\Lambda$CDM and $f(R)$ Hu-Sawicki modified gravity. To generate the $f(R)$ cosmic shear theory vector, we use the matter power spectrum emulator trained on COLA (COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration) simulations. The $k$-cut method is used to significantly down-weight sensitivity to small scale ($k > 1 \ h {\rm Mpc }^{-1}$) modes in the matter power spectrum where the emulator is less accurate, while simultaneously ensuring our results are robust to baryonic feedback model uncertainty. We have also developed a test to ensure that the effects of poorly modeled small scales are nulled as intended. For $\Lambda$CDM we find $S_8 = \sigma_8 (\Omega_m / 0.3) ^ {0.5} = 0.789 ^{+0.039}_{-0.022}$, while the constraints on the $f(R)$ modified gravity parameters are prior dominated. In the future, the $k$-cut method could be used to constrain a large number of theories of gravity where computational limitations make it infeasible to model the matter power spectrum down to extremely small scales., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. Today, thanks in particular to the results of the ESA Planck mission, the concordance cosmological model appears to be the most robust to describe the evolution and content of the Universe from its early to late times. It summarizes the evolution of matter, made mainly of dark matter, from the primordial fluctuations generated by inflation around $10^{-30}$ second after the Big-Bang to galaxies and clusters of galaxies, 13.8 billion years later, and the evolution of the expansion of space, with a relative slowdown in the matter-dominated era and, since a few billion years, an acceleration powered by dark energy. But we are far from knowing the pillars of this model which are inflation, dark matter and dark energy. Comprehending these fundamental questions requires a detailed mapping of our observable Universe over the whole of cosmic time. The relic radiation provides the starting point and galaxies draw the cosmic web. JAXA's LiteBIRD mission will map the beginning of our Universe with a crucial test for inflation (its primordial gravity waves), and the ESA Euclid mission will map the most recent half part, crucial for dark energy. We study a phenomenological class of models where dark matter converts to dark radiation in the low redshift epoch. This class of models, dubbed DMDR, characterizes the evolution of comoving dark matter density with two extra parameters, and may be able to help alleviate the observed discrepancies between early- and late-time probes of the universe. We investigate how the conversion affects key cosmological observables such as the CMB temperature and matter power spectra. Combining 3x2pt data from Year 1 of the Dark Energy Survey, {\it Planck}-2018 CMB temperature and polarization data, supernovae (SN) Type Ia data from Pantheon, and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data from BOSS DR12, MGS and 6dFGS, we place new constraints on the amount of dark matter that has converted to dark radiation and the rate of this conversion. The fraction of the dark matter that has converted since the beginning of the universe in units of the current amount of dark matter, $\zeta$, is constrained at 68\% confidence level to be $<0.32$ for DES-Y1 3x2pt data, $<0.030$ for CMB+SN+BAO data, and $<0.037$ for the combined dataset. The probability that the DES and CMB+SN+BAO datasets are concordant increases from 4\% for the $\Lambda$CDM model to 8\% (less tension) for DMDR. The tension in $S_8 = \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}$ between DES-Y1 3x2pt and CMB+SN+BAO is slightly reduced from $2.3\sigma$ to $1.9\sigma$. We find no reduction in the Hubble tension when the combined data is compared to distance-ladder measurements in the DMDR model. The maximum-posterior goodness-of-fit statistics of DMDR and $\Lambda$CDM model are comparable, indicating no preference for the DMDR cosmology over $\Lambda$CDM., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures. We measure the projected number density profiles of galaxies and the splashback feature in clusters selected by the Sunyaev--Zeldovich (SZ) effect from the Advanced Atacama Cosmology Telescope (AdvACT) survey using galaxies observed by the Dark Energy Survey (DES). The splashback radius for the complete galaxy sample is consistent with theoretical measurements from CDM-only simulations, and is located at $2.4^{+0.3}_{-0.4}$ Mpc $h^{-1}$. We split the sample based on galaxy color and find significant differences in the profile shapes. Red galaxies and those in the green valley show a splashback-like minimum in their slope profile consistent with theoretical predictions, while the bluest galaxies show a weak feature that appears at a smaller radius. We develop a mapping of galaxies to subhalos in $N$-body simulations by splitting subhalos based on infall time onto the cluster halos. We find that the location of the steepest slope and differences in the shapes of the profiles can be mapped to differences in the average time of infall of galaxies of different colors. The minima of the slope in the galaxy profiles trace a discontinuity in the phase space of dark matter halos. By relating spatial profiles to infall time for galaxies of different colours, we can use splashback as a clock to understand galaxy quenching. We find that red galaxies have on average been in their clusters for over $3.2 ~\rm Gyrs$, green galaxies about $2.2 ~\rm Gyrs$, while blue galaxies have been accreted most recently and have not reached apocenter. Using the information from the complete radial profiles, we fit a simple quenching model and find that the onset of galaxy quenching in clusters occurs after a delay of about a gigayear, and that galaxies quench rapidly thereafter with an exponential timescale of $0.6$ Gyr., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, to be submitted to ApJ

A precise measurement of the curvature of the Universe is of primeval importance for cosmology since it could not only confirm the paradigm of primordial inflation but also help in discriminating between different early Universe scenarios. The recent observations, while broadly consistent with a spatially flat standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, are showing tensions that still allow (and, in some cases, even suggest) a few percent deviations from a flat universe. In particular, the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background power spectra, assuming the nominal likelihood, prefer a closed universe at more than 99\% confidence level. While new physics could be in action, this anomaly may be the result of an unresolved systematic error or just a statistical fluctuation. However, since a positive curvature allows a larger age of the Universe, an accurate determination of the age of the oldest objects provides a smoking gun in confirming or falsifying the current flat $\Lambda$CDM model., Comment: Snowmass2021 - Letter of Interest

In this Letter of Interest we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances present between the different cosmological probes, as the Hubble constant $H_0$ value, the $\sigma_8 - S_8$ tension, and the anomalies present in the Planck results. Magnetized plasmas within halos of galaxies leave their footprint on the polarized anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background. The two dominant effects for astrophysical halos are Faraday rotation generating rotation of the plane of linear polarization, and Faraday conversion inducing a leakage from linear polarization to circular polarization. We revisit these sources of secondary anisotropies by computing the angular power spectra of the Faraday rotation angle and of the Faraday conversion rate by the large scale structures. To this end, we use the halo model and we pay special attention to the impact of magnetic field projections. Assuming magnetic fields of halos to be uncorrelated, we found a vanishing 2-halo term, and angular power spectra peaking at multipoles $\ell\sim10^4$. The Faraday rotation angle is dominated by the contribution of thermal electrons. For the Faraday conversion rate, we found that both thermal electrons and relativistic, non-thermal electrons contribute equally in the most optimistic case for the density and Lorentz factor of relativistic electrons, while in more pessimistic cases the thermal electrons give the dominant contribution. Assuming the magnetic field to be independent of the halo mass, the angular power spectra for both effects roughly scale with the amplitude of matter perturbations as $\sim\sigma_8^3$, and with a very mild dependence with the density of cold dark matter. Introducing a dependence of the magnetic field strength with the halo mass leads to an increase of the scaling with the amplitude of matter fluctuations, up to $\sim\sigma_8^{9.5}$ for Faraday rotation and $\sim\sigma_8^{15}$ for Faraday conversion for a magnetic field strength scaling linearly with the halo mass., Comment: 13 + 5 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

We use a range of cosmological data to constrain phenomenological modifications to general relativity on cosmological scales, through modifications to the Poisson and lensing equations. We include cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements from the Planck satellite, cosmic shear from CFHTLenS and DES-SV, and redshift-space distortions from BOSS data release 12 and the 6dF galaxy survey. We find no evidence of departures from general relativity, with the modified gravity parameters constrained to $\Sigma_0 = 0.05^{+0.05}_{-0.07}$ and $\mu_0 = -0.10^{+0.20}_{-0.16}$, where $\Sigma_0$ and $\mu_0$ refer to deviations from general relativity today and are defined to be zero in general relativity. We also forecast the sensitivity to those parameters of the full five-year Dark Energy Survey and of an experiment like the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, showing a substantial expected improvement in the constraint on $\Sigma_0$., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures
