Crowd-sensing has emerged as a powerful data retrieval model, enabling diverse applications by leveraging active user participation. However, data availability and privacy concerns pose significant challenges. Traditional methods like data encryption and anonymization, while essential, may not fully address these issues. For instance, in sparsely populated areas, anonymized data can still be traced back to individual users. Additionally, the volume of data generated by users can reveal their identities. To develop credible crowd-sensing systems, data must be anonymized, aggregated and separated into uniformly sized chunks. Furthermore, decentralizing the data management process, rather than relying on a single server, can enhance security and trust. This paper proposes a system utilizing smart contracts and blockchain technologies to manage crowd-sensing campaigns. The smart contract handles user subscriptions, data encryption, and decentralized storage, creating a secure data marketplace. Incentive policies within the smart contract encourage user participation and data diversity. Simulation results confirm the system's viability, highlighting the importance of user participation for data credibility and the impact of geographical data scarcity on rewards. This approach aims to balance data origin and reduce cheating risks.

The study of Greek papyri from ancient Egypt is fundamental for understanding Graeco-Roman Antiquity, offering insights into various aspects of ancient culture and textual production. Palaeography, traditionally used for dating these manuscripts, relies on identifying chronologically relevant features in handwriting styles yet lacks a unified methodology, resulting in subjective interpretations and inconsistencies among experts. Recent advances in digital palaeography, which leverage artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, have introduced new avenues for dating ancient documents. This paper presents a comparative analysis between an AI-based computational dating model and human expert palaeographers, using a novel dataset named Hell-Date comprising securely fine-grained dated Greek papyri from the Hellenistic period. The methodology involves training a convolutional neural network on visual inputs from Hell-Date to predict precise dates of papyri. In addition, experts provide palaeographic dating for comparison. To compare, we developed a new framework for error analysis that reflects the inherent imprecision of the palaeographic dating method. The results indicate that the computational model achieves performance comparable to that of human experts. These elements will help assess on a more solid basis future developments of computational algorithms to date Greek papyri.

High-rate quantum error correcting codes mitigate the imposing scale of fault-tolerant quantum computers but require the efficient generation of non-local many-body entanglement. We provide a linear-optical architecture with these properties, compatible with arbitrary codes and Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill qubits on generic lattices, and featuring a natural way to leverage physical noise bias. Simulations involving hyperbolic surface codes, promising quantum low-density parity-check codes, reveal a threshold comparable to the 2D surface code at about a ten-fold improvement in encoding rate., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, comments welcome

We implement a variant of the quantum pigeonhole paradox thought experiment to study whether classical counting principles survive in the quantum domain. We observe strong measurements significantly violate the pigeonhole principle (that among three pigeons in two holes, at least one pair must be in the same hole) and the sum rule (that the number of pigeon pairs in the same hole is the sum of the number of pairs across each of the holes) in an ensemble that is pre and postselected into particular separable states. To investigate whether measurement disturbance is a viable explanation for these counter-intuitive phenomena, we employ the first ever variable-strength measurement of a non-local observable. As we decrease the measurement strength, we find the violation of the sum rule decreases, yet the pigeonhole principle remains violated. In the weak limit, the sum rule is restored due to the cancellation between two weak values with equal and opposite imaginary parts. We observe the same kind of cancellation at higher measurement strengths, thus raising the question: do strong measurements have imaginary parts?, Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Elasmobranchs (shark sand rays) represent a critical component of marine ecosystems. Yet, they are experiencing global population declines and effective monitoring of populations is essential to their protection. Underwater stationary videos, such as those from Baited Remote Underwater Video Stations (BRUVS), are critical for understanding elasmobranch spatial ecology and abundance. However, processing these videos requires time-consuming manual analysis that can delay conservation. To address this challenge, we developed SharkTrack, a semi-automatic underwater video analysis software. SharkTrack uses Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Multi-Object Tracking to automatically detect and track elasmobranchs and provides an annotation pipeline to manually classify elasmobranch species and compute species-specific MaxN (ssMaxN), the standard metric of relative abundance. When tested on BRUVS footage from locations unseen by the CNN model during training, SharkTrack computed ssMaxN with 89% accuracy over 207 hours of footage. The semi-automatic SharkTrack pipeline required two minutes of manual classification per hour of video, an estimated 95% reduction of manual analysis time compared to traditional methods. Furthermore, we demonstrate SharkTrack accuracy across diverse marine ecosystems and elasmobranch species, an advancement compared to previous models, which were limited to specific species or locations. SharkTrack applications extend beyond BRUVS, facilitating the analysis of any underwater stationary video. By making video analysis faster and more accessible, SharkTrack enables research and conservation organisations to monitor elasmobranch populations more efficiently, thereby improving conservation efforts. To further support these goals, we provide public access to the SharkTrack software.

In this paper, we present an application of the optimal control theory to orbital transfer of Low Earth Orbit satellites. The optimal control problem is treated with Dynamic Programming techniques which require solving the Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equation on a suitable state space, with the reconstruction of the optimal controls made in the form of a static feedback. In order to validate the numerical scheme without the complexity of the full model, this first study sets the problem in planar form, thus working in a four-dimensional state space. We will study various techniques to speed up the computation, and assess the accuracy of the numerical solution. This project is born from the attempt of evaluating and applying direct method of optimal control techniques based on Dynamic Programming as a complementary approach to the well known indirect methods, as Pontryagin or Lawden. In particular, the final aim is to treat the case of low thrust engines from real use cases, in the full 3-D problem.

We discuss the problem of constructing self-adjoint and lower bounded Hamiltonians for a system of $n>2$ non-relativistic quantum particles in dimension three with contact (or zero-range or $\delta$) interactions. Such interactions are described by (singular) boundary conditions satisfied at the coincidence hyperplanes, i.e., when the coordinates of two particles coincide. Following the line of recent works appeared in the literature, we introduce a boundary condition slightly modified with respect to usual boundary condition one has in the one-body problem. With such new boundary condition we can show that the instability property due to the fall to the center phenomenon described by Minlos and Faddeev in 1962 is avoided. Then one obtains a physically reasonable Hamiltonian for the system. We apply the method to the case of a gas of $N$ interacting bosons and to the case of $N$ distinguishable particles of equal mass $M$ interacting with a different particle. In the latter case we also discuss the limit of the model for $M \longrightarrow +\infty$. We show that in the limit one obtains the one-body Hamiltonian for the light particle subject to $N$ (non-local) point interactions placed at fixed positions. In this paper, we present a study of a Federated Learning (FL) system, based on the use of decentralized architectures to ensure trust and increase reliability. The system is based on the idea that the FL collaborators upload the (ciphered) model parameters on the Inter-Planetary File System (IPFS) and interact with a dedicated smart contract to track their behavior. Thank to this smart contract, the phases of parameter updates are managed efficiently, thereby strengthening data security. We have carried out an experimental study that exploits two different methods of weight aggregation, i.e., a classic averaging scheme and a federated proximal aggregation. In this paper we propose a novel macroscopic (fluid dynamics) model for describing pedestrian flow in low and high density regimes. The model is characterized by the fact that the maximal density reachable by the crowd - usually a fixed model parameter - is instead a state variable. To do that, the model couples a conservation law, devised as usual for tracking the evolution of the crowd density, with a Burgers-like PDE with a nonlocal term describing the evolution of the maximal density. The variable maximal density is used here to describe the effects of the psychological/physical pushing forces which are observed in crowds during competitive or emergency situations. Specific attention is also dedicated to the fundamental diagram, i.e., the function which expresses the relationship between crowd density and flux. Although the model needs a well defined fundamental diagram as known input parameter, it is not evident a priori which relationship between density and flux will be actually observed, due to the time-varying maximal density. An a posteriori analysis shows that the observed fundamental diagram has an elongated "tail" in the congested region, thus resulting similar to the concave/concave fundamental diagram with a "double hump" observed in real crowds. The main features of the model are investigated through 1D and 2D numerical simulations. Experimental searches for vector-like quarks have until now only considered their decays into Standard Model particles. However, various new physics scenarios predict additional scalars, so that these vector-like quarks can decay to new channels. These new channels reduce the branching ratios into Standard Model final states, significantly affecting current mass bounds. In this article, we quantitatively assess the relevance and observability of single and pair production processes of vector-like quarks, followed by decays into both standard and exotic final states. We highlight the importance of large widths and the relative interaction strengths with Standard Model particles and new scalars. Then, we review the post-Moriond 2024 status of these models in light of available LHC data and discuss potential future strategies to enhance the scope of vector-like quark searches., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures; v2: minor clarifications added

We show how the multivariable signature and Alexander polynomial of a colored link can be computed from a single symmetric matrix naturally defined from a colored link diagram. In the case of a single variable, it coincides with the matrix introduced by Kashaev in [arXiv:1801.04632], which was recently proven to compute the Levine-Tristram signature and the Alexander polynomial of oriented links [arXiv:2311.01923, arXiv:2310.16729]. As a corollary, we obtain a multivariable extension of Kauffman's determinantal model of the Alexander polynomial, recovering a result of Zibrowius [arXiv:1601.04915v1]., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Flocking systems are known to be strongly out of equilibrium. Energy input occurs at the individual level to ensure self-propulsion, and the individual motility in turn contributes to ordering, enhancing information propagation and strengthening collective motion. However, even beyond ordering, a crucial feature of natural aggregations is response. How, then, do off-equilibrium features affect the response of the system? In this work, we consider a minimal model of flocking and investigate response behavior under directional perturbations. We show that equilibrium dynamical fluctuation-dissipation relations between response and correlations are violated, both at the local and at the global level. The amount of violation peaks at the ordering transition, exactly as for the entropy production rate. Entropy is always produced locally and connected to the local fluctuation-dissipation violation via Harada-Sasa relationships. However, cooperative mechanisms close to the transition spread off-equilibrium effects to the whole system, producing an out of equilibrium response on the global scale. Multilevel modeling is increasingly relevant in the context of modelling and simulation since it leads to several potential benefits, such as software reuse and integration, the split of semantically separated levels into sub-models, the possibility to employ different levels of detail, and the potential for parallel execution. The coupling that inevitably exists between the sub-models, however, implies the need for maintaining consistency between the various components, more so when different simulation paradigms are employed (e.g., sequential vs parallel, discrete vs continuous). In this paper we argue that multilevel modelling is well suited for the simulation of human mobility, since it naturally leads to the decomposition of the model into two layers, the "micro" and "macro" layer, where individual entities (micro) and long-range interactions (macro) are described. In this paper we investigate the challenges of multilevel modeling, and describe some preliminary results using prototype implementations of multilayer simulators in the context of epidemic diffusion and vehicle pollution.

Multilevel modeling and simulation (M&S) is becoming increasingly relevant due to the benefits that this methodology offers. Multilevel models allow users to describe a system at multiple levels of detail. From one side, this can make better use of computational resources, since the more detailed and time-consuming models can be executed only when/where required. From the other side, multilevel models can be assembled from existing components, cutting down development and verification/validation time. A downside of multilevel M&S is that the development process becomes more complex due to some recurrent issues caused by the very nature of multilevel models: how to make sub-models interoperate, how to orchestrate execution, how state variables are to be updated when changing scale, and so on. In this paper, we address some of these issues by presenting a set of design patterns that provide a systematic approach for designing and implementing multilevel models. The proposed design patterns cover multiple aspects, including how to represent different levels of detail, how to combine incompatible models, how to exchange data across models, and so on. Some of the patterns are derived from the general software engineering literature, while others are specific to the multilevel M&S application area.

The ALICE Muon IDentifier is composed of 72 single-gap bakelite Resistive Plate Chambers, which have been operational since 2009 in maxi-avalanche mode (discrimination threshold:7 mV without amplification) with a Tetrafluoroethane/Isobutane/Sulfur Hexafluoride gas mixture, undergoing counting rates of the order of tens of Hz/cm^2. In this talk, the long-term performance and stability of the RPC system will be discussed, in terms of efficiency, dark current and dark rate. We study the Hamiltonian for a Bose gas in three dimensions of $N \geq 3$ spinless particles interacting via zero-range or contact interactions. Such interactions are described by (singular) boundary conditions satisfied at the coincidence hyperplanes, i.e., when the coordinates of two particles coincide. It is known that if one imposes the same kind of boundary condition of the one-body problem with a point interaction then one is inevitably led to a Hamiltonian unbounded from below and therefore unstable. This is due to the fact that the interaction becomes too strong and attractive when the coordinates of three or more particles coincide. In order to avoid such instability property, we develop a suggestion formulated by Minlos and Faddeev in 1962 and introduce a slightly modified boundary condition which reduces the strength of the interaction when the positions of the particles $i, j$ coincide in the following cases: a) a third particle approaches the common position of $i$ and $j$; b) two other particles approach to each other. In all the other cases the usual boundary condition is restored. Following a quadratic form approach, we prove that the Hamiltonian characterized by such modified boundary condition is self-adjoint and bounded from below. We also show that the N-body Hamiltonian with contact interactions obtained years ago by Albeverio, H{\o}egh-Krohn and Streit using the theory of Dirichlet forms (J. Math. Phys., 18, 907--917, 1977) is a special case of our Hamiltonian., Comment: 28 pages

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) studies the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP): a deconfined state of matter obtained in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. One of the probes for QGP study are quarkonia and open heavy flavour, of which ALICE exploits the muonic decay. A set of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs), placed in the forward rapidity region of the ALICE detector, is used for muon identification purposes. The correct operation of these detectors is ensured by the choice of the proper gas mixture. Currently they are operated with a mixture of C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$, i-C$_{4}$H$_{10}$ and SF$_{6}$ but, starting from 2017, new EU regulations have enforced a progressive phase-out of C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ because of its large Global Warming Potential (GWP), making it difficult and costly to purchase. CERN asked LHC experiments to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, to which RPC operation contributes significantly. A possible candidate for C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ replacement is the C$_{3}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ (diluted with other gases, such as CO$_{2}$), which has been extensively tested using cosmic rays. Promising gas mixtures have been devised; the next crucial steps are the detailed in-beam characterization of such mixtures as well as the study of their performance under increasing irradiation levels. This contribution will describe the methodology and results of beam tests carried out at the CERN GIF++ (equipped with a high activity $^{137}$Cs source and muon beam) with an ALICE-like RPC prototype, operated with several mixtures with varying proportions of CO$_{2}$, C$_{3}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$, i-C$_{4}$H$_{10}$ and SF$_{6}$ . Absorbed currents, efficiencies, prompt charges, cluster sizes, time resolutions and rate capabilities will be presented, both from digitized (for detailed shape and charge analysis) and discriminated (using the same front-end electronics as employed in ALICE) signals.

Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) are gaseous detectors widely used in high energy physics experiments, operating with a gas mixture primarily containing Tetrafluoroethane (C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$), commonly known as R-134a, which has a global warming potential (GWP) of 1430. To comply with European regulations and explore environmentally friendly alternatives, the RPC EcoGas@GIF++ collaboration, involving ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb/SHiP, and EP-DT communities, has undertaken intensive R\&D efforts to explore new gas mixtures for RPC technology. A leading alternative under investigation is HFO1234ze, boasting a low GWP of 6 and demonstrating reasonable performance compared to R-134a. Over the past few years, RPC detectors with slightly different characteristics and electronics have been studied using HFO and CO$_{2}$-based gas mixtures at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility. An aging test campaign was launched in August 2022, and during the latest test beam in July 2023, all detector systems underwent evaluation. This contribution will report the results of the aging studies and the performance evaluations of the detectors with and without irradiation.

We propose a high order numerical scheme for time-dependent first order Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equations. In particular we propose to combine a semi-Lagrangian scheme with a Central Weighted Non-Oscillatory reconstruction. We prove a convergence result in the case of state- and time-independent Hamiltonians. Numerical simulations are presented in space dimensions one and two, also for more general state- and time-dependent Hamiltonians, demonstrating superior performance in terms of CPU time gain compared with a semi-Lagrangian scheme coupled with Weighted Non-Oscillatory reconstructions.

Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Arrays (CGRAs) represent emerging low-power architectures designed to accelerate Compute-Intensive Loops (CILs). The effectiveness of CGRAs in providing acceleration relies on the quality of mapping: how efficiently the CIL is compiled onto the platform. State of the Art (SoA) compilation techniques utilize modulo scheduling to minimize the Iteration Interval (II) and use graph algorithms like Max-Clique Enumeration to address mapping challenges. Our work approaches the mapping problem through a satisfiability (SAT) formulation. We introduce the Kernel Mobility Schedule (KMS), an ad-hoc schedule used with the Data Flow Graph and CGRA architectural information to generate Boolean statements that, when satisfied, yield a valid mapping. Experimental results demonstrate SAT-MapIt outperforming SoA alternatives in almost 50\% of explored benchmarks. Additionally, we evaluated the mapping results in a synthesizable CGRA design and emphasized the run-time metrics trends, i.e. energy efficiency and latency, across different CILs and CGRA sizes. We show that a hardware-agnostic analysis performed on compiler-level metrics can optimally prune the architectural design space, while still retaining Pareto-optimal configurations. Moreover, by exploring how implementation details impact cost and performance on real hardware, we highlight the importance of holistic software-to-hardware mapping flows, as the one presented herein.

Results obtained by the RPC ECOgas@GIF++ Collaboration, using Resistive Plate Chambers operated with new, eco-friendly gas mixtures, based on Tetrafluoropropene and carbon dioxide, are shown and discussed in this paper. Tests aimed to assess the performance of this kind of detectors in high-irradiation conditions, analogous to the ones foreseen for the coming years at the Large Hadron Collider experiments, were performed, and demonstrate a performance basically similar to the one obtained with the gas mixtures currently in use, based on Tetrafluoroethane, which is being progressively phased out for its possible contribution to the greenhouse effect. It is often thought that the super-sensitivity of a quantum state to an observable comes at the cost of a decreased sensitivity to other non-commuting observables. For example, a squeezed state squeezed in position quadrature is super-sensitive to position displacements, but very insensitive to momentum displacements. This misconception was cleared with the introduction of the compass state, a quantum state equally super-sensitive to displacements in position and momentum. When looking at quantum states used to measure spin rotations, N00N states are known to be more advantageous than classical methods as long as they are aligned to the rotation axis. When considering the estimation of a rotation with unknown direction and amplitude, a certain class of states stands out with interesting properties. These states are equally sensitive to rotations around any axis, are second-order unpolarized, and can possess the rotational properties of platonic solids in particular dimensions. Importantly, these states are optimal for simultaneously estimating the three parameters describing a rotation. In the asymptotic limit, estimating all d parameters describing a transformation simultaneously rather than sequentially can lead to a reduction of the appropriately-weighted sum of the measured parameters' variances by a factor of d. We report the experimental creation and characterization of the lowest-dimensional such state, which we call the "tetrahedron state" due to its tetrahedral symmetry. This tetrahedron state is created in the symmetric subspace of four optical photons' polarization in a single spatial and temporal mode, which behaves as a spin-2 particle. While imperfections due to the hardware limit the performance of our method, we argue that better technology can improve our method to the point of outperforming any other existing strategy in per-photon comparisons., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

In 2018, Kashaev introduced a square matrix indexed by the regions of a link diagram, and conjectured that it provides a novel way of computing the Levine-Tristram signature and Alexander polynomial of the corresponding oriented link. In this article, we show that for the classical signature (i.e. the Levine-Tristram signature at -1), this conjecture follows from the seminal work of Gordon-Litherland. We also relate Kashaev's matrix to Kauffman's "Formal Knot Theory" model of the Alexander polynomial. As a consequence, we establish the Alexander polynomial and classical signature parts of the conjecture for arbitrary links, as well as the full conjecture for definite knots., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. We introduce a novel, multi-scale model for affinity maturation, which aims to capture the intra-clonal, inter-clonal and epitope-specific organization of the B cell population in a germinal center. We describe the evolution of the B cell population via a quasispecies dynamics, with species corresponding to unique B cell receptors (BCRs), where the desired multi-scale structure is reflected on the mutational connectivity of the accessible BCR space, and on the statistical properties of its fitness landscape. Within this mathematical framework, we study the competition among classes of BCRs targeting different antigen epitopes, and construct an effective \emph{immunogenic space} where epitope immunodominance relations can be universally characterized. We finally study how varying the relative composition of a mixture of antigens with variable and conserved domains allows for a parametric exploration of this space, and identify general principles for the rational design of two-antigen cocktails., Comment: 10 pages + 3 pages (appendix), 6 figures

In Green's function theory, the total energy of an interacting many-electron system can be expressed in a variational form using the Klein or Luttinger-Ward functionals. Green's function theory also naturally addresses the case where the interacting system is embedded into a bath. This latter can then act as a dynamical (i.e., frequency-dependent) potential, providing a more general framework than that of conventional static external potentials. Notably, the Klein functional includes a term of the form $\text{Tr}_\omega \text{Ln}\left\{G_0^{-1}G\right\}$, where $\text{Tr}_\omega$ is the frequency integration of the trace operator. Here, we show that using a sum-over-pole representation for the Green's functions and the algorithmic-inversion method one can obtain in full generality an explicit analytical expression for $\text{Tr}_\omega \text{Ln}\left\{G_0^{-1}G\right\}$. This allows one, e.g., to derive a variational expression for the Klein functional in the presence of an embedding bath, or to provide an explicit expression of the RPA correlation energy in the framework of the optimized effective potential., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures
