We consider a model of an elastic manifold driven on a disordered energy landscape, with generalized long range elasticity. Varying the form of the elastic kernel by progressively allowing for the existence of zero-modes, the model interpolates smoothly between mean field depinning and finite dimensional yielding. We find that the critical exponents of the model change smoothly in this process. Also, we show that in all cases the Herschel-Buckley exponent of the flowcurve depends on the analytical form of the microscopic pinning potential. This is a compelling indication that within the present elastoplastic description yielding in finite dimension $d\geq 2$ is a mean-field transition., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We analyze the behavior of different elastoplastic models approaching the yielding transition. We propose two kind of rules for the local yielding events: yielding occurs above the local threshold either at a constant rate or with a rate that increases as the square root of the stress excess. We establish a family of "static" universal critical exponents which do not depend on this dynamic detail of the model rules: in particular, the exponents for the avalanche size distribution $P(S)\sim S^{-\tau_S}f(S/L^{d_f})$ and the exponents describing the density of sites at the verge of yielding, which we find to be of the form $P(x)\simeq P(0) + x^\theta$ with $P(0)\sim L^{-a}$ controlling the extremal statistics. On the other hand, we discuss "dynamical" exponents that are sensitive to the local yielding rule details. We find that, apart form the dynamical exponent $z$ controlling the duration of avalanches, also the flowcurve's (inverse) Herschel-Bulkley exponent $\beta$ ($\dot\gamma\sim(\sigma-\sigma_c)^\beta$) enters in this category, and is seen to differ in $\frac12$ between the two yielding rate cases. We give analytical support to this numerical observation by calculating the exponent variation in the H\'ebraud-Lequeux model and finding an identical shift. We further discuss an alternative mean-field approximation to yielding only based on the so-called Hurst exponent of the accumulated mechanical noise signal, which gives good predictions for the exponents extracted from simulations of fully spatial models., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

We study the finite size fluctuations at the depinning transition for a one-dimensional elastic interface of size $L$ displacing in a disordered medium of transverse size $M=k L^\zeta$ with periodic boundary conditions, where $\zeta$ is the depinning roughness exponent and $k$ is a finite aspect ratio parameter. We focus on the crossover from the infinitely narrow ($k\to 0$) to the infinitely wide ($k\to \infty$) medium. We find that at the thermodynamic limit both the value of the critical force and the precise behavior of the velocity-force characteristics are {\it unique} and $k$-independent. We also show that the finite size fluctuations of the critical force (bias and variance) as well as the global width of the interface cross over from a power-law to a logarithm as a function of $k$. We discuss the universal dynamics of elastic interfaces in quenched random media. We focus in the relation between the rough geometry and collective transport properties in driven steady-states. Specially devised numerical algorithms allow us to analyze the equilibrium, creep, and depinning regimes of motion in minimal models. The possibility to detect simultaneously in the X-ray band the synchrotron and Inverse Compton (IC)emission of intermediate BL Lac objects offers the unique opportunity to study contemporaneously the low- and high-energy tails of the electron distribution in the jets of these sources. We attempted to disentangle the X-ray spectral variability properties of both the low- and high-energy ends of the synchrotron and Inverse Compton emission of the intermediate BL Lac object S5 0716+71. We carried out spectral, temporal and cross-correlation analyses of the data from a long XMM-Newton pointing of S5 0716+71 and we compared our findings with previous results from past X-ray observations. Strong variability was detected during the XMM exposure.Both the synchrotron and Inverse Compton components were found to vary on time scales of hours, implying a size of the emitting region of $R\la 0.7\delta /(1+z)$ light-hours. The synchrotron emission was discovered to become dominant during episodes of flaring activity, following a harder-when-brighter trend. Tight correlations were observed between variations in different energy bands. We report on a densely time sampled polarimetric flux density monitoring of the BL Lac object S5 0716+71 at 86 GHz and 229 GHz with the IRAM 30 m telescope within a coordinated broad spectral band campaign, centred around an INTEGRAL observation during November 10 to 16, 2003. Our aim was to search for signatures of inverse-Compton "catastrophes". At 86 GHz, making use of a new calibration strategy, we reach a relative rms accuracy of the flux density measurements of 1.2%. At this frequency, S5 0716+71 showed no intra-day variability, but showed remarkable inter-day variability with a flux density increase of 34% during the first four observing days, which can not be explained by source extrinsic causes. The 86 GHz linear polarization fraction of S5 0716+71 was unusually large 15.0+-1.8%. Inter-day variability in linear polarization at 86 GHz, with significance level >~95%; sigma_P/=15% and sigma_chi=6 deg., was also observed. From the emission variations at the synchrotron turnover frequency (~86 GHz) we compute an apparent brightness temperature T_B,app>1.4x10^14K at a redshift of 0.3, which exceeds by two orders of magnitude the inverse-Compton limit. A relativistic correction for T_B,app with a Doppler factor delta > 7.8 brings the observed brightness temperature down to the inverse Compton limit. A more accurate lower limit of delta > 14.0, is obtained from the comparison of the 86 GHz synchrotron flux density and the upper limits for the synchrotron self-Compton flux density obtained from the INTEGRAL observations. The relativistic beaming of the emission by this high Doppler factor explains the non-detection of "catastrophic" inverse-Compton avalanches by INTEGRAL., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 16 pages, 11 figures

(abridged) The spectral energy distribution (SED) of the compact steep spectrum (CSS) source and possible radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1), PKS2004-447, is presented. Five out of six well studied RL NLS1 share this dual classification (optically defined as a NLS1 with radio definition of a CSS or giga-hertz peaked spectrum (GPS) source). The SED is created from simultaneous observations at radio (ATCA), optical/NIR (Siding Spring) and UV/X-ray (XMM-Newton) wavelengths. The X-ray data show evidence of short-term variability, a possible soft excess, and negligible absorption. Together with the rest of the SED, the X-ray emission is excessive in comparison to synchrotron plus synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) models. The SED can be described with a two component model consisting of extended synchrotron/SSC emission with Comptonisation in the X-rays, though SSC models with a very high electron-to-magnetic energy density ratio cannot be excluded either. The peak emission in the SED appears to be in the near infrared, which can be attributed to thermal emission from a dusty torus. Analysis of a non-contemporaneous, low resolution optical spectrum suggests that the narrow-line region (NLR) is much more reddened than the X-ray emitting region suggesting that the gas-to-dust ratio in PKS2004-447 may be very different then in our own Galaxy. Long-term radio monitoring of PKS2004-447 shows a rather constant light curve over nearly a six month period with the exception of one outburst when the 6.65GHz flux increased by ~35% over 19 days. In comparison to general samples of GPS sources, which appear to be X-ray weak, NLS1-CSS/GPS sources possess stronger X-ray emission relative to radio, and lower intrinsic absorption than GPS sources of similar X-ray luminosity., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. Some intra-day variable, compact extra-galactic radio sources show brightness temperatures severely exceeding 10^{12} K, the limit set by catastrophic inverse-Compton (IC) cooling in sources of incoherent synchrotron radiation. The violation of the IC limit, possible under non-stationary conditions, would lead to IC avalanches in the soft-gamma-ray energy band during transient periods. For the first time, broadband signatures of possible IC catastrophes were searched for in S5 0716+71. A multifrequency observing campaign targetting S5 0716+71 was carried out in November 2003 under the framework of the European Network for the Investigation of Galactic nuclei through Multifrequency Analysis (ENIGMA) together with a campaign by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT), involving a pointing by the soft-gamma-ray satellite INTEGRAL, optical, near-infrared, sub-millimeter, millimeter, radio, and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) monitoring. S5 0716+71 was very bright at radio frequencies and in a rather faint optical state during the INTEGRAL pointing; significant inter-day and low intra-day variability was recorded in the radio regime, while typical fast variability features were observed in the optical band. No correlation was found between the radio and optical emission. The source was not detected by INTEGRAL, neither by the X-ray monitor JEM-X nor by the gamma-ray imager ISGRI, but upper limits to the source emission in the 3-200 keV energy band were estimated. A brightness temperature Tb>2.1x10^{14} K was inferred from the radio variability, but no corresponding signatures of IC avalanches were recorded at higher energies. The absence of IC-catastrophe signatures provides either a lower limit delta>8 to the Doppler factor affecting the radio emission or strong constraints for modelling of the Compton catastrophes in S5 0716+71., Comment: 15 pages, 3 EPS figures, 3 tables, to appear in A&A

Mrk 705 exhibits optical properties of both narrow- and broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. We examine the X-ray properties of this borderline object utilising proprietary and public data from Chandra, ASCA, ROSAT and RXTE, spanning more than twelve years. Though long-term flux variability from the pointed observations appears rather modest (about 3 times), we do find examples of rare large amplitude outbursts in the RXTE monitoring data. There is very little evidence of long-term spectral variability as the low- and high-energy spectra appear constant with time. A 6.4 keV emission line is detected in the ASCA spectra of Mrk 705, but not during the later, higher flux state Chandra observation. However, the upper limit on the equivalent width of a line in the Chandra spectrum is consistent with a constant-flux emission line and a brighter continuum, suggesting that the line is emitted from distant material such as the putative torus. We present results from several XMM-Newton observations of the radio loud Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) PKS 0558-504. We find evidence for strong and persistent X-ray variability, both on short and long time-scales. On short time scales of ~2 hours the source varies smoothly by 15-20%; long term variations by a factor of >2 could not be resolved in the relatively short exposures: we find the source mostly in a `low' state, in 2 out of the 11 observations in a `high state'. X-ray flares seem to be recurrent with a time scale of ~24 ksec which, if interpreted as the Keplerian time scale in the disc, would place the emission region just outside the last stable orbit. The X-ray spectrum of PKS 0558-504 can be well fitted by two Comptonization components, one at moderate temperatures of kT ~ 4.5 keV and optical depths of \~ 2, the other at high temperatures kT > 50 keV and low optical depths < 1.0. These parameters are, however, subject to large errors due to the inherent degeneracy of the Comptonization models. Flux variations of the source are caused by changes of the colder component only, the hot component with parameters very similar to those of BLS1 galaxies, stays constant. All results fit nicely the picture that NLS1 galaxies are lower mass objects, accreting close to the Eddington rate emitting X-rays from a very active magnetically powered accretion disc corona., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the results of XMM-Newton observations of four high-z quasars, two radio-loud and two radio-quiet. One of the radio-loud objects, PKS 2126-158, clearly shows absorption in excess of the galactic value as claimed before from ASCA and ROSAT observations. For PKS 2149-306 the evidence for excess absorption is only marginal in contrast to previous results. The location of the absorber in PKS 2126-158 is compatible with the redshift of the source. Both, a warm and a cold absorber are allowed by the X-ray data. Both quasars have very flat photon spectra (\Gamma \la 1.5) and the high photon statistics reveal small deviations from a simple power law form. For the two radio-quiet objects, Q 0000-263 and Q 1442+2931, we determine, for the first time, reliable spectral parameters. Both quasars have steeper power laws (\Gamma \sim 2) and show absorption consistent with the galactic value, similar to radio-quiet quasars at low redshifts. In the case of Q 0000-263 the presence of the damped Ly$\alpha $ system (N(HI)\sim 2.6\times 10^{21} cm^{-2} at z = 3.39) cannot be examined further due to the limited photon statistics in all instruments., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In a ~ 20 ksec XMM-Newton observation the X-ray transient radio-quiet quasar PG 0844+349 was found in a historically high state compared to previous X-ray observations. The quasar showed a featureless spectrum with a strong soft excess over the extrapolation of a hard power law. Comptonization models or a broken power law with Gamma_{soft} ~ 2.75, Gamma_{hard} ~ 2.25 and a break energy of E_{break} ~ 1.35 keV represent acceptable descriptions of the spectral continuum. In the Comptonization models the temperature of the Comptonizing gas is considerably lower than generally found in (broad line) Seyfert galaxies whereas the optical depth is much higher. As a similar behavior has been seen in NLSy1 galaxies, it might be an indicator of the different physical conditions in these two classes of AGN. During the XMM-Newton observation the flux of PG 0844+349 varied achromatically in a smooth, nearly linear fashion, by ~ 25 % on time scales of a few thousand seconds, which puts some constraints on current models of Comptonizing accretion disk coronae., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures.
