Abstract

This paper reports on elastic scattering excitation functions for the reaction $^{9}$Li+$^{4}$He measured at backward angles in the centre of mass energy range 5 MeV ≤ E≤c.m.9.5 MeV, with the aim of investigating the possible existence of molecular resonances which have been predicted to exist in the case of neutron-rich B-isotopes. Due to the short lifetime of $^{9}$Li, the experiment necessitated the use of inverse kinematics on a gaseous $^{4}$He target. The Thick Target Inverse Kinematics technique was used which allowed for the measurement of the full excitation function in a single $^{9}$Li run. Broad resonances were observed in the excitation region for $^{13}$B 15 MeV ≤ Ex≤20 MeV. To understand the nature of such broad structures, various theoretical attempts are reported concerning possible reaction mechanisms for this neutron rich reaction. The most promising approach to interpret the data is within the orbiting reaction scenario.

Abstract

A new Data Acquisition System has been developed at LNS to match the experimental request of handling hundreds of parameters and spectra with an input event frequency of a few kHz. Both the traditional CAMAC and a new faster ECL readout dataways are supported. To enhance the system flexibility three different kinds of CAMAC ADCs can be used (GAN'ELEC QDC1612F, FERA 4300B, SILENA ADC4418/V). Two HSM8170 interfaces are adopted between the ECLbus and the VMEbus as ECL-VME buffers. An EXB-8200 tape unit is connected to the system for off-line processing data storage.

Abstract

In order to investigate the existence of molecular and/or exotic cluster configurations in Boron and Carbon n-rich isotopes we undertook two experiments: the first experimental study of exotic 9Li+¿ cluster states in 13B using the resonance scattering method at TRIUMF (Canada), and, with the same technique, the measurement of 10Be+¿ scattering at LNS in Catania, where a 10Be radioactive beam was produced for the first time. In order to measure the excitation function in a wide energy range, the beams were stopped in a Helium-flooded chamber. In the case of 13B, the elastic excitation function shows the presence of various peaks in an excitation energy region never explored before. In the case of 14C, our exclusive measurement of elastic scattering data with a high intensity beam, sheds some light on the contradictory previously published results [1, 2].

Abstract

Accurate measurements of solar irradiance are crucial for the planning, tests and operation of solar power plants. The measurement uncertainty caused by the calibration is the most relevant contribution to the overall uncertainty of well-maintained radiometers. Uncertainties of field pyranometers and pyrheliometers can be significantly reduced by calibrations through WRR (World Radiometric Reference) traceable reference sensors compared to indoor calibrations. This report presents the results of the three campaigns, in which new responsivities were derived for 80 field sensors. The presentation of the results includes: Comparison of newly acquired responsivities with manufacturer responsivity Comparison of repeatedly calibrated sensors at PSA during varies calibration campaigns Solar angle dependency of pyranometers Reliability of manufacturer responsivities Influence of an automated cloud filtering system on basis of whole sky imagers (cloud cameras)

Abstract

The excitation function of the resonant reaction He-4(Li-9,alpha) was measured with the aim of investigating the compound nucleus B-13. These measurements were performed in inverse kinematics at center-of-mass scattering angles close to 180 degrees by using a thick He-4 gas target and a Li-9 beam. The B-13 excitation energy region explored was 14-20 MeV where Li-9-alpha configurations of B-13 are predicted by Antysimmetrised Molecular Dynamics calculations. The measured excitation function at theta(cm) = 180 degrees shows different clear structures in a B-13 excitation energy region which was experimentally unknown.

32nd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1493-1498, The accurate measurement of shortwave solar irradiance is essential for the planning and operation of photovoltaic plants. The measurement uncertainty caused by the calibration is the most relevant contribution to the overall uncertainty of radiometers. During the outdoor calibration of radiometers the meteorological conditions have to be observed carefully and data points collected under unfavorable conditions must be rejected. The rejection criteria concern the level of the involved irradiances, wind speed and –direction, and also the cloud conditions. The latter are quantified in terms of the minimum angular distance of clouds from the sun and are usually determined visually by an observer. A purely manual visual determination of the cloud’s angular distance from the sun is time consuming and often inaccurate. We developed an algorithm for whole sky imagers (WSIs) that allows the determination of the minimum angular distance of clouds from the sun and the automatic filtering of the calibration data. The high importance of the cloud filtering for pyranometer calibration is shown with an exemplary calibration result for nine pyranometers. The effect of the cloud filtering for pyrheliometer calibration has shown to be negligible for this example. The filtering method increases the calibration quality and noticeably reduces the personnel effort for pyranometer calibration.

Abstract

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is characterized by Th2 polarized immune response. Allergen-specific subcutaneous immunotherapy may restore a physiologic Th1 profile. However, there are few studies investigating the immunological effects of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). The aim of this study is to investigate whether a pre-seasonal SLIT course could affect IFN-gamma production. Forty-four AR patients with pollen allergy assumed pre-seasonal SLIT for 3 months. IFN-gamma-specific producing cells were assessed by cytokine ELISPOT before and 3 months after the beginning of SLIT. Visual analogue scale (VAS) for symptoms and medication score was also evaluated. The frequency of IFN-gamma-specific producing cells significantly increased after SLIT (p0.01), and this increase was significantly associated with improvement of both symptoms (p0.001) and medication use (p0.01). In conclusion, these results may be considered clinically relevant as SLIT treatment may induce a quick IFN- gamma response that is related to clinical improvement.

Abstract

There is particular interest to develop low-noise and wide dynamic range data acquisition systems for silicon detectors in view of using the same acquisition readout electronics for a wide range of application fields like monitoring and characterization of radiation sources or particle beams. In the framework of a research project for the qualification of Components Off The Shelf (COTS) for their use in space, research groups from INFN-Perugia, INFN-LNS and from MAPRAD have developed a fully automated, remote controllable, wide dynamic range acquisition system for silicon strip or pixelated detectors. Its design and a basic description of the performance are given here.
