The NUCLEUS experiment aims for the detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at a nuclear power reactor with gram-scale, ultra-low-threshold cryogenic detectors. This technology leads to a miniaturization of neutrino detectors and allows to probe physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. A 0.5 g NUCLEUS prototype detector, operated above ground in 2017, reached an energy threshold for nuclear recoils of below 20 eV. This sensitivity is achieved with tungsten transition edge sensors which are operating at temperatures of 15 mK and are mainly sensitive to non-thermal phonons. These small recoil energies become accessible for the first time with this technology, which allows collecting large-statistics neutrino event samples with a moderate detector mass. A first-phase cryogenic detector array with a total mass of 10 g enables a 5-sigma observation of coherent scattering within several weeks. We identified a suitable experimental site at the Chooz Nuclear Power Plant and performed muon and neutron background measurements there. The operation of a NUCLEUS cryogenic detector array at such a site requires highly efficient background suppression. NUCLEUS plans to use an innovative technique consisting of separate cryogenic anticoincidence detectors against surface backgrounds and penetrating (gamma, neutron) radiation. Coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering ( CE ν NS ) offers a unique way to study neutrino properties and to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Nuclear reactors are promising sources to explore this process at low energies since they deliver large fluxes of anti-neutrinos with typical energies of a few MeV. In this paper, a new-generation experiment to study CE ν NS is described. The NUCLEUS experiment will use cryogenic detectors which feature an unprecedentedly low-energy threshold and a time response fast enough to be operated under above-ground conditions. Both sensitivity to low-energy nuclear recoils and a high event rate tolerance are stringent requirements to measuring CE ν NS of reactor anti-neutrinos. A new experimental site, the Very-Near-Site (VNS), at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France is described. The VNS is located between the two 4.25 GW th reactor cores and matches the requirements of NUCLEUS. First results of on-site measurements of neutron and muon backgrounds, the expected dominant background contributions, are given. In this paper a preliminary experimental set-up with dedicated active and passive background reduction techniques and first background estimations are presented. Furthermore, the feasibility to operate the detectors in coincidence with an active muon veto at shallow overburden is studied. The paper concludes with a sensitivity study pointing out the physics potential of NUCLEUS at the Chooz nuclear power plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The limited availability of pharmaceutical formulations tailored for cardiovascular diseases in both pediatric and geriatric populations generates the need for compounded dosage forms to guarantee precise dosing and medication adherence. This study aimed to analyze the physicochemical properties and stability of formulations of atenolol and enalapril maleate prepared with a proprietary oral vehicle, SuspendIt ® . To this end, palatability, injectability, pH, rheological behavior, and physical, microbiological, and chemical stability over a 180-day storage period at 25 °C and 5 °C were evaluated. Injectability tests confirmed the suitable use of both formulations for administration through enteral feeding tubes. By using a potentiometric electronic tongue, it was confirmed that the SuspendIt ® vehicle effectively served as a bitter-blocking strategy for atenolol and enalapril maleate. Adequate stability throughout the storage period was confirmed in terms of the mechanical properties, pH, and effectiveness of the preservative system. The atenolol concentration remained above 90% of the initial amount, while the concentration of enalapril maleate decreased to 88% after 90 days of storage at 25 °C. In summary, the atenolol formulation maintained suitable chemical, physical, and microbiological stability after 180 days at both storage temperatures, while the enalapril maleate formulation remained stable up to 60 days at 25 °C and for 180 days at 5 °C.

Acute pancreatitis is a common condition in Gastroenterology. Among its possible etiologies are ampullary tumors, rare neoplasms whose growth can hinder pancreatic drainage. Although they are usually epithelial, adenomas and adenocarcinomas, less commonly other histological types have been reported, such as neuroendocrine tumors. They constitute a small percentage of both ampullary tumors and neuroendocrine tumors of the digestive tract, classified into three histological grades based on mitotic count and Ki-67. Although the diagnosis is usually incidental, its main form of presentation is clinical or analytical cholestasis, with acute pancreatitis being an exceptional initial presentation. Endoscopic resection is the treatment of choice for well-differentiated tumors without evidence of local infiltration of the duodenal wall or intraductal growth greater than 10mm, with endoscopic ultrasound playing a key role in this assessment. We present the case of a 45-year-old cholecystectomized woman who was admitted to our service with a condition compatible with acute pancreatitis, initially suspected to be of biliary origin. After several radiological and endoscopic studies, an enlargement of the duodenal papilla suggestive of ampulloma was detected. Histological examination demonstrated a well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor of the duodenal papilla which, lacking evidence of local duodenal infiltration or intraductal growth, was successfully resected endoscopically.

The detection and level assessment of microorganisms is a practical quality/contamination indicator of food and water samples. Conventional analytical procedures (e.g., culture methods, immunological techniques, and polymerase chain reactions), while accurate and widely used, are time-consuming, costly, and generate a large amount of waste. Electronic noses (E-noses), combined with chemometrics, provide a direct, green, and non-invasive assessment of the volatile fraction without the need for sample pre-treatments. The unique olfactory fingerprint generated during each microorganism's growth can be a vehicle for its detection using gas sensors. A lab-made E-nose, comprising metal oxide semiconductor sensors was applied, to analyze solid medium containing Gram-positive ( Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus ) or Gram-negative ( Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ) bacteria. The electrical-resistance signals generated by the E-nose coupled with linear discriminant analysis allowed the discrimination of the four bacteria (90% of correct classifications for leave-one-out cross-validation). Furthermore, multiple linear regression models were also established allowing quantifying the number of colony-forming units (CFU) (0.9428 ≤ R 2 ≤ 0.9946), with maximum root mean square errors lower than 4 CFU. Overall, the E-nose showed to be a powerful qualitative-quantitative device for bacteria preliminary analysis, being envisaged its possible application in solid food matrices.

The geographical traceability of extra virgin olive oils (EVOO) is of paramount importance for oil chain actors and consumers. Oils produced in two adjacent Portuguese regions, Côa (36 oils) and Douro (31 oils), were evaluated and fulfilled the European legal thresholds for EVOO categorization. Compared to the Douro region, oils from Côa had higher total phenol contents (505 versus 279 mg GAE/kg) and greater oxidative stabilities (17.5 versus 10.6 h). The majority of Côa oils were fruity-green, bitter, and pungent oils. Conversely, Douro oils exhibited a more intense fruity-ripe and sweet sensation. Accordingly, different volatiles were detected, belonging to eight chemical families, from which aldehydes were the most abundant. Additionally, all oils were evaluated using a lab-made electronic nose, with metal oxide semiconductor sensors. The electrical fingerprints, together with principal component analysis, enabled the unsupervised recognition of the oils' geographical origin, and their successful supervised linear discrimination (sensitivity of 98.5% and specificity of 98.4%; internal validation). The E-nose also quantified the contents of the two main volatile chemical classes (alcohols and aldehydes) and of the total volatiles content, for the studied olive oils split by geographical origin, using multivariate linear regression models (0.981 ≤ R 2 ≤ 0.998 and 0.40 ≤ RMSE ≤ 2.79 mg/kg oil; internal validation). The E-nose-MOS was shown to be a fast, green, non-invasive and cost-effective tool for authenticating the geographical origin of the studied olive oils and to estimate the contents of the most abundant chemical classes of volatiles.

Apurinic apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1) is a key enzyme of the Base Excision Repair (BER) pathway, which primarily manages oxidative lesions of DNA. Once the damaged base is removed, APE1 recognises the resulting abasic site and cleaves the phosphodiester backbone to allow for the correction by subsequent enzymes of the BER machinery. In spite of a wealth of information on APE1 structure and activity, its regulation mechanism still remains to be understood. Human APE1 consists of a globular catalytic domain preceded by a flexible N-terminal extension, which might be involved in the interaction with DNA. Moreover, the binding of the nuclear chaperone nucleophosmin (NPM1) to this region has been reported to impact APE1 catalysis. To evaluate intra- and inter-molecular conformational rearrangements upon DNA binding, incision, and interaction with NPM1, we used Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), a fluorescence spectroscopy technique sensitive to molecular distances. Our results suggest that the N-terminus approaches the DNA at the downstream side of the abasic site and enables the building of a predictive model of the full-length APE1/DNA complex. Furthermore, the spatial configuration of the N-terminal tail is sensitive to NPM1, which could be related to the regulation of APE1.

Background: Low-fat or non-fat yoghurts are popular nowadays. However, their texture is not good and they show considerable syneresis with time. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of the application of transglutaminase (TG) to low-fat yoghurt to determine if similar sensory properties to those of full-fat yoghurt can be obtained. Methods of adding TG (prior or simultaneous with fermentation), dose, and TG origin were evaluated. Correlations between sensory and physicochemical parameters were assessed., Results: The results showed no significant differences between TG addition methods in terms of the quantitative and qualitative sensory attributes studied. Simultaneous addition of TG was preferred to speed up the process. A dose of 1 U g -1 was selected as optimal. Few differences were detected due to the origin of the TG. They were not significant although some differences were observed in terms of density, bitterness, and syneresis compared with low and full-fat yoghurts., Conclusion: The results showed that sensory parameters cannot be associated with only one physicochemical parameter in yoghurt evaluation. Transglutaminase can be used as a substitute for stabilizers in the production of low-fat yoghurt, maintaining good sensory properties and avoiding initial syneresis. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Background: Currently consumers demand low-fat or non-fat yoghurt but their physical properties are less attractive than those of full-fat yoghurt. It was reported that microbial transglutaminase (TG) can be used in the production of low-fat yoghurt. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of TG on low-fat yoghurt to improve their physicochemical and textural properties to approach to those of full-fat yoghurt. Two TG application methods (addition before fermentation or simultaneous addition with the starter), three dose levels and TG origin were evaluated. Results were compared with commercial low-fat and full-fat yoghurts., Results: No significant differences between application methods were observed. Simultaneous addition of TG was preferred because additional time-consuming steps are not required. The best dose was 1 U TG g -1 of protein that allowed a firmness higher (4.25 N) than that of commercial low-fat (3.05 N) and full-fat (4.43 N) yoghurts to be achieved. This implies that intermediate values of TG will permit the same firmness as commercial yoghurts to be obtained. It was observed some differences by the TG origin may be due to excipients., Conclusion: TG may be used to replace stabilizers in the production of low-fat yoghurt as it improves texture and avoids initial syneresis. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Introduction: The Neonatal Network of Public Hospitals in the city of Buenos Aires closely monitors the progress of newborn infants with a birth weight less than 1500 g (very low birth weight, VLBW) because it largely contributes to neonatal morbidity and mortality., Objective: To analyze the morbidity and mortality of VLBW infants and determine their riskadjusted mortality using the score of the South American Neonatal Network (Red Neonatal de los países del Conosur de América, NEOCOSUR)., Material and Methods: Live infants born in the network hospitals with a birth weight of 500-1499 g between 2008 and 2010 were included in the study. Data was recorded prospectively using a standardized methodology. Mortality, morbidity and risk-adjusted mortality rates according to the NEOCOSUR score were estimated. Results. There were 92,698 infants born during the study period. Of them, 1.26% weighed less than 1500 g at birth. Only 40.4% of these received a full course of antenatal corticosteroids. A total of 62.7% of these developed respiratory distress syndrome, 5.4% enterocolitis, 10.1% intracranial hemorrhage, and 13.4% severe retinopathy. Early sepsis was observed in 5.6%, and late sepsis in 9.6%. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia was present in 10.7% of the cases. Neonatal mortality was 29.2%, and the adjusted mortality with no major malformations was 25.4%. Survival of infants with a birth weight of =750 g and a gestational age of =26 weeks was 50%. The observed/expected mortality ratio was 1.04, with a large variability., Conclusions: The percentage of VLBW infants who received antenatal corticosteroids was low. The incidence of sepsis and the rate of infants with severe retinopathy of prematurity are high. The risk-adjusted mortality is higher than expected.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of five adjuvants on the ability of specific anti-TbpA/B to block iron uptake in Neisseria meningitidis., Materials and Methods: Transferrin binding complexes (TbpA/B) purified from a TbpB isotype II Neisseria meningitidis strain were used to obtain sera with five different adjuvant formulations in mice in order to test the effect of the adjuvant on the ability of specific anti-TbpA/B antibodies to block transferrin binding, iron uptake and growth by meningococci., Results: Levels of anti-TbpA/B antibodies were relatively low (1:125 in most cases), the highest being obtained with the RAS adjuvant (1:3125). Despite the relatively low responses, all sera were able to significantly inhibit transferrin binding, iron uptake and growth in the homologous strain. Nevertheless, the effect on a strain with a TbpB isotype different from that of the immunizing strain was almost nil, a result in keeping with the described division of the meningococci into at least two TbpB groups (isotypes I and II)., Conclusions: In contrast to previous results for another important meningococcal protein, FbpA, the use of various adjuvants in the immunization of mice with TbpA/B complexes did not produce differences in the immune responses elicited, except in relation to antibody titers.

Sixty-six cases of P.F. of the mouth cavity have been studied. Osseous maxillary invasion (attack) has been detected (discovered) in five patients. It could be determined that in the first three patients the P.F. was originated in the maxillary sinus but in its development it destroyed bone walls and emerged in the mouth cavity. Moreover, in one of the patients it drilled the mucous of the surco naso-geniano outwards. In the other two cases left something attracted our attention the osseous destruction a invasive squamous x rayed was more important than the damage of the mucous membranes. In the last case a change of P.F. into a carcinoma epidermoide infiltrante was produced after cytostatic treatment; this was already published by us. The percentage of the bone invasion of the oral squamous all carcinoma is similar to the Papillomatosis Florida.
