The variational inequality problem in finite-dimensional Euclidean space is addressed in this paper, and two inexact variants of the extragradient method are proposed to solve it. Instead of computing exact projections on the constraint set, as in previous versions extragradient method, the proposed methods compute feasible inexact projections on the constraint set using a relative error criterion. The first version of the proposed method provided is a counterpart to the classic form of the extragradient method with constant steps. In order to establish its convergence we need to assume that the operator is pseudo-monotone and Lipschitz continuous, as in the standard approach. For the second version, instead of a fixed step size, the method presented finds a suitable step size in each iteration by performing a line search. Like the classical extragradient method, the proposed method does just two projections into the feasible set in each iteration. A full convergence analysis is provided, with no Lipschitz continuity assumption of the operator defining the variational inequality problem.

In the present paper, we formulate two versions of Frank--Wolfe algorithm or conditional gradient method to solve the DC optimization problem with an adaptive step size. The DC objective function consists of two components; the first is thought to be differentiable with a continuous Lipschitz gradient, while the second is only thought to be convex. The second version is based on the first and employs finite differences to approximate the gradient of the first component of the objective function. In contrast to past formulations that used the curvature/Lipschitz-type constant of the objective function, the step size computed does not require any constant associated with the components. For the first version, we established that the algorithm is well-defined of the algorithm and that every limit point of the generated sequence is a stationary point of the problem. We also introduce the class of weak-star-convex functions and show that, despite the fact that these functions are non-convex in general, the rate of convergence of the first version of the algorithm to minimize these functions is ${\cal O}(1/k)$. The finite difference used to approximate the gradient in the second version of the Frank-Wolfe algorithm is computed with the step-size adaptively updated using two previous iterations. Unlike previous applications of finite difference in the Frank-Wolfe algorithm, which provided approximate gradients with absolute error, the one used here provides us with a relative error, simplifying the algorithm analysis. In this case, we show that all limit points of the generated sequence for the second version of the Frank-Wolfe algorithm are stationary points for the problem under consideration, and we establish that the rate of convergence for the duality gap is ${\cal O}(1/\sqrt{k})$.

Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
This article deals with multiobjective composite optimization problems that consist of simultaneously minimizing several objective functions, each of which is composed of a combination of smooth and non-smooth functions. To tackle these problems, we propose a generalized version of the conditional gradient method, also known as Frank-Wolfe method. The method is analyzed with three step size strategies, including Armijo-type, adaptive, and diminishing step sizes. We establish asymptotic convergence properties and iteration-complexity bounds, with and without convexity assumptions on the objective functions. Numerical experiments illustrating the practical behavior of the methods are presented.

In this paper we present a subgradient method with non-monotone line search for the minimization of convex functions with simple convex constraints. Different from the standard subgradient method with prefixed step sizes, the new method selects the step sizes in an adaptive way. Under mild conditions asymptotic convergence results and iteration-complexity bounds are obtained. Preliminary numerical results illustrate the relative efficiency of the proposed method.

Mathematics - Optimization and Control ,65K05, 90C30, 90C25 - Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new algorithm combining the Douglas-Rachford (DR) algorithm and the Frank-Wolfe algorithm, also known as the conditional gradient (CondG) method, for solving the classic convex feasibility problem. Within the algorithm, which will be named {\it Approximate Douglas-Rachford (ApDR) algorithm}, the CondG method is used as a subroutine to compute feasible inexact projections on the sets under consideration, and the ApDR iteration is defined based on the DR iteration. The ApDR algorithm generates two sequences, the main sequence, based on the DR iteration, and its corresponding shadow sequence. When the intersection of the feasible sets is nonempty, the main sequence converges to a fixed point of the usual DR operator, and the shadow sequence converges to the solution set. We provide some numerical experiments to illustrate the behaviour of the sequences produced by the proposed algorithm.

In this paper we present an inexact proximal point method for variational inequality problem on Hadamard manifolds and study its convergence properties. The proposed algorithm is inexact in two sense. First, each proximal subproblem is approximated by using the enlargement of the vector field in consideration and then the next iterated is obtained by solving this subproblem allowing a suitable error tolerance. As an application, we obtain an inexact proximal point method for constrained optimization problems, equilibrium problems and nonlinear optimization problems on Hadamard manifolds., Comment: 18 pages

This paper is concerned with the Frank--Wolfe algorithm for a special class of {\it non-compact} constrained optimization problems. The notion of asymptotic cone is used to introduce this class of problems as well as to establish that the algorithm is well defined. These problems, with closed and convex constraint set, are characterized by two conditions on the gradient of the objective function. The first establishes that the gradient of the objective function is Lipschitz continuous, which is quite usual in the analysis of this algorithm. The second, which is new in this subject, establishes that the gradient belongs to the interior of the dual asymptotic cone of the constraint set. Classical results on the asymptotic behavior and iteration-complexity bounds for the sequence generated by the Frank--Wolfe algorithm are extended to this new class of problems. Examples of problems with non-compact constraints and objective functions satisfying the aforementioned conditions are also provided.

Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
The classical convex feasibility problem in a finite dimensional Euclidean space is studied in the present paper. We are interested in two cases. First, we assume to know how to compute an exact project onto one of the sets involved and the other set is compact such that the conditional gradient (CondG) method can be used for computing efficiently an inexact projection on it. Second, we assume that both sets involved are compact such that the CondG method can be used for computing efficiently inexact projections on them. We combine alternating projection method with CondG method to design a new method, which can be seen as an inexact feasible version of alternate projection method. The proposed method generates two different sequences belonging to each involved set, which converge to a point in the intersection of them whenever it is not empty. If the intersection is empty, then the sequences converge to points in the respective sets whose distance is equal to the distance between the sets in consideration., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, 4 algorithms

eosinophilic dermatosis of hematologic malignancy ,eosinophil disorders ,cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease - Abstract
Eosinophilic dermatosis of hematologic malignancy (EDHM) is a dermatosis characterized by tissue eosinophilia that has been previously reported as insect bite-like reaction. It is a rare condition with a wide variety of clinical presentations ranging from papules, nodules, or blisters that simulate arthropod bites, to the formation of plaques of differing sizes. We report a case of eosinophilic dermatosis of hematologic malignancy in a patient with a hematoproliferative disorder.

The gradient method for minimize a differentiable convex function on Riemannian manifolds with lower bounded sectional curvature is analyzed in this paper. The analysis of the method is presented with three different finite procedures for determining the stepsize, namely, Lipschitz stepsize, adaptive stepsize and Armijo's stepsize. The first procedure requires that the objective function has Lipschitz continuous gradient, which is not necessary for the other approaches. Convergence of the whole sequence to a minimizer, without any level set boundedness assumption, is proved. Iteration-complexity bound for functions with Lipschitz continuous gradient is also presented. Numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the method in this new setting and certify the obtained theoretical results. In particular, we consider the problem of finding the Riemannian center of mass and the so-called Karcher's mean. Our numerical experiences indicate that the adaptive stepsize is a promising scheme that is worth considering.

The aim of this paper is to present an extragradient method for variational inequality associated to a point-to-set vector field in Hadamard manifolds and to study its convergence properties. In order to present our method the concept of $\epsilon$-enlargement of maximal monotone vector fields is used and its lower-semicontinuity is stablished in order to obtain the convergence of the method in this new context.

In this paper the spherical quasi-convexity of quadratic functions on spherically convex sets is studied. Several conditions characterizing the spherical quasi-convexity of quadratic functions are presented. In particular, conditions implying spherical quasi-convexity of quadratic functions on the spherical positive orthant are given. Some examples are provided as an application of the obtained results.

Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
A damped Newton's method to find a singularity of a vector field in Riemannian setting is presented with global convergence study. It is ensured that the sequence generated by the proposed method reduces to a sequence generated by the Riemannian version of the classical Newton's method after a finite number of iterations, consequently its convergence rate is superlinear/quadratic. Moreover, numerical experiments illustrate that the damped Newton's method has better performance than Newton's method in number of iteration and computational time.

Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
The extended second order cones were introduced by S. Z. N\'emeth and G. Zhang in [S. Z. N\'emeth and G. Zhang. Extended Lorentz cones and variational inequalities on cylinders. J. Optim. Theory Appl., 168(3):756-768, 2016] for solving mixed complementarity problems and variational inequalities on cylinders. R. Sznajder in [R. Sznajder. The Lyapunov rank of extended second order cones. Journal of Global Optimization, 66(3):585-593, 2016] determined the automorphism groups and the Lyapunov or bilinearity ranks of these cones. S. Z. N\'emeth and G. Zhang in [S.Z. N\'emeth and G. Zhang. Positive operators of Extended Lorentz cones. arXiv:1608.07455v2, 2016] found both necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for a linear operator to be a positive operator of an extended second order cone. This note will give formulas for projecting onto the extended second order cones. In the most general case the formula will depend on a piecewise linear equation for one real variable which will be solved by using numerical methods.

This paper considers optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds and analyzes iteration-complexity for gradient and subgradient methods on manifolds with non-negative curvature. By using tools from the Riemannian convex analysis and exploring directly the tangent space of the manifold, we obtain different iteration-complexity bounds for the aforementioned methods, complementing and improving related results. Moreover, we also establish iteration-complexity bound for the proximal point method on Hadamard manifolds., Comment: 16 pages

In this paper a special semi-smooth equation associated to the second order cone is studied. It is shown that, under mild assumptions, the semi-smooth Newton method applied to this equation is well-defined and the generated sequence is globally and Q-linearly convergent to a solution. As an application, the obtained results are used to study the linear second order cone complementarity problem, with special emphasis on the particular case of positive definite matrices. Moreover, some computational experiments designed to investigate the practical viability of the method are presented., Comment: 18 pages

In this paper we consider the Newton's method for solving the generalized equation of the form $ f(x) +F(x) \ni 0, $ where $f:{\Omega}\to Y$ is a continuously differentiable mapping, $X$ and $Y$ are Banach spaces, $\Omega\subseteq X$ an open set and $F:X \rightrightarrows Y$ be a set-valued mapping with nonempty closed graph. We show that, under strong regularity of the generalized equation, concept introduced by S.M.Robinson in [27], and starting point satisfying the Kantorovich's assumptions, the Newton's method is quadratically convergent to a solution, which is unique in a suitable neighborhood of the starting point. The analysis presented based on Banach Perturbation Lemma for generalized equation and the majorant technique, allow to unify some results pertaining the Newton's method theory., Comment: 20 pages. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv: 1604.04568, arXiv:1603.04782

In this paper we study Newton's method for solving generalized equations in Banach spaces. We show that under strong regularity of the generalized equation, the method is locally convergent to a solution with superlinear/quadratic rate. The presented analysis is based on Banach Perturbation Lemma for generalized equation and the classical Lipschitz condition on the derivative is relaxed by using a general majorant function, which enables obtaining the optimal convergence radius, uniqueness of solution as well as unifies earlier results pertaining to Newton's method theory., Comment: 18 pages. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1604.04569

Mathematics - Optimization and Control ,90C33, 65K05 - Abstract
In this paper an inexact proximal point method for variational inequalities in Hadamard manifolds is introduced and studied its convergence properties. The main tool used for presenting the method is the concept of enlargement of monotone vector fields, which generalizes the concept of enlargement of monotone operators from the linear setting to the Riemannian context. As an application, an inexact proximal point method for constrained optimization problems is obtained., Comment: 14 pages

The problem of finding a solution of nonlinear inclusion problems in Banach space is considered in this paper. Using convex optimization techniques introduced by Robinson (Numer. Math., Vol. 19, 1972, pp. 341-347), a robust convergence theorem for inexact Newton's method is proved. As an application, an affine invariant version of Kantorovich's theorem and Smale's \alpha-theorem for inexact Newton's method is obtained., Comment: 15 pages, 0 figure. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1403.2462

NectarCAM is a camera proposed for the medium-sized telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) covering the central energy range of ~100 GeV to ~30 TeV. It has a modular design and is based on the NECTAr chip, at the heart of which is a GHz sampling Switched Capacitor Array and a 12-bit Analog to Digital converter. The camera will be equipped with 265 7-photomultiplier modules, covering a field of view of 8 degrees. Each module includes the photomultiplier bases, high voltage supply, pre-amplifier, trigger, readout and Ethernet transceiver. The recorded events last between a few nanoseconds and tens of nanoseconds. The camera trigger will be flexible so as to minimize the read-out dead-time of the NECTAr chips. NectarCAM is designed to sustain a data rate of more than 4 kHz with less than 5\% dead time. The camera concept, the design and tests of the various subcomponents and results of thermal and electrical prototypes are presented. The design includes the mechanical structure, cooling of the electronics, read-out, clock distribution, slow control, data-acquisition, triggering, monitoring and services., Comment: In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2015), The Hague, The Netherlands. In this paper a special piecewise linear system is studied. It is shown that, under a mild assumption, the semi-smooth Newton method applied to this system is well defined and the method generates a sequence that converges linearly to a solution. Besides, we also show that the generated sequence is bounded, for any starting point, and a formula for any accumulation point of this sequence is presented. As an application, we study the convex quadratic programming problem under positive constraints. The numerical results suggest that the semi-smooth Newton method achieves accurate solutions to large scale problems in few iterations., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1503.02753

In this paper, we investigate global convergence properties of the inexact nonsmooth Newton method for solving the system of absolute value equations (AVE). Global $Q$-linear convergence is established under suitable assumptions. Moreover, we present some numerical experiments designed to investigate the practical viability of the proposed scheme.

The proximal point method for a special class of nonconvex multiobjective functions is studied in this paper. We show that the method is well defined and that the accumulation points of any generated sequence, if any, are Pareto--Clarke critical points. Moreover, under additional assumptions, we show the full convergence of the generated sequence.

In this paper the simplicial cone constrained convex quadratic programming problem is studied. The optimality conditions of this problem consist in a linear complementarity problem. This fact, under a suitable condition, leads to an equivalence between the simplicial cone constrained convex quadratic programming problem and the one of finding the unique solution of a nonsmooth system of equations. It is shown that a semi-smooth Newton method applied to this nonsmooth system of equations is always well defined and under a mild assumption on the simplicial cone the method generates a sequence that converges linearly to its solution. Besides, we also show that the generated sequence is bounded for any starting point and a formula for any accumulation point of this sequence is presented. The presented numerical results suggest that this approach achieves accurate solutions to large problems in few iterations., Comment: 17 pages

A sufficient condition for the existence of a solution for generalized vector equilibrium problem (GVEP) on Hadamard manifold, by using a version of KKM lemma on this context, is presented in this paper. It is worth to point out that, in particular, existence result of solution for optimization problems, vector optimization problems, Nash equilibria problems, complementarity problems and variational inequality problems can be obtained as a special case of the existence result for GVEP in this new context., Comment: 11 pages. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1307.7200

By using Moreau's decomposition theorem for projecting onto cones, the problem of projecting onto a simplicial cone is reduced to finding the unique solution of a nonsmooth system of equations. It is shown that a semi-smooth Newton method applied to the system of equations associated to the problem of projecting onto a simplicial cone is always well defined, and the generated sequence is bounded for any starting point and under a somewhat restrictive assumption it is finite. Besides, under a mild assumption on the simplicial cone, the generated sequence converges linearly to the solution of the associated system of equations., Comment: 10 pages

A local convergence analysis of Inexact Newton's method with relative residual error tolerance for finding a singularity of a differentiable vector field defined on a complete Riemannian manifold, based on majorant principle, is presented in this paper. We prove that under local assumptions, the inexact Newton method with a fixed relative residual error tolerance converges Q -linearly to a singularity of the vector field under consideration. Using this result we show that the inexact Newton method to find a zero of an analytic vector field can be implemented with a fixed relative residual error tolerance. In the absence of errors, our analysis retrieve the classical local theorem on the Newton method in Riemannian context.

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
In the framework of the next generation of Cherenkov telescopes, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), NectarCAM is a camera designed for the medium size telescopes covering the central energy range of 100 GeV to 30 TeV. NectarCAM will be finely pixelated (~ 1800 pixels for a 8 degree field of view, FoV) in order to image atmospheric Cherenkov showers by measuring the charge deposited within a few nanoseconds time-window. It will have additional features like the capacity to record the full waveform with GHz sampling for every pixel and to measure event times with nanosecond accuracy. An array of a few tens of medium size telescopes, equipped with NectarCAMs, will achieve up to a factor of ten improvement in sensitivity over existing instruments in the energy range of 100 GeV to 10 TeV. The camera is made of roughly 250 independent read-out modules, each composed of seven photo-multipliers, with their associated high voltage base and control, a read-out board and a multi-service backplane board. The read-out boards use NECTAr (New Electronics for the Cherenkov Telescope Array) ASICs which have the dual functionality of analogue memories and Analogue to Digital Converter (ADC). The camera trigger to be used will be flexible so as to minimize the read-out dead-time of the NECTAr chips. We present the camera concept and the design and tests of the various subcomponents. The design includes the mechanical parts, the cooling of the electronics, the readout, the data acquisition, the trigger, the monitoring and services., Comment: In Proceedings of the 33rd International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2013), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
