Purpose: Although Brazil has a high prevalence of retinoblastoma, there is a lack of epidemiological data on the disease. Thus, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the epidemiological profile of patients diagnosed with retinoblastoma in the ophthalmology department of a pediatric tertiary referral hospital in Ceara, Brazil., Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted by retrospectively analyzing the clinical and socioeconomic data from the medical records of pediatric patients followed-up at the hospital between 2007 and 2021. Retinoblastoma was diagnosed on the basis of a fundoscopic or histopathologic examination., Results: The data of 105 patients were included in the study, and the mean patient age at the time of diagnosis was 1.7 years. Most of the patients were women (50.5%) and hailed from rural areas (57.4%), which was associated with a higher tumor stage. Of the 150 patients, 57.1% initially presented with leukocoria. Ocular hyperemia was associated with more advanced stages of retinoblastoma (p=0.004). Bilateral involvement was observed in 25.7% of the patients and at a significantly younger age (p=0.009). The presence of retinal detachment, vascularized lesions, and vitreous seeds significantly increased the likelihood of requiring enucleation., Discussion: This study presents an epidemiological description of retinoblastoma in Brazil, which highlights the significance of early detection. Delayed diagnosis is associated with a poorer visual prognosis and higher mortality rate, particularly in patients with unilateral disease. Risk factors for a more severe disease were retinal detachment, vascularized lesions, and vitreous seeds. The correlation between histopathological features and clinical outcomes was limited., Conclusion: Further studies are required to assess the influence of ocular hyperemia, fundoscopic assessment, and histopathologic findings on the prognosis of retinoblastoma. Moreover, it is critical to devise interventions to reduce the time-to-diagnosis in rural areas.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether early-stage intraocular pressure can be modulated using a thermal face mask., Methods: In this prospective clinical study, healthy participants were randomized on a 1:1:1 allocation ratio to three mask groups: hypothermic (G1), normothermic (G2), and hyperthermic (G3). After randomization, 108 eyes from 108 participants were submitted to clinical evaluations, including measurement of initial intraocular pressure (T1). The thermal mask was then applied for 10 minutes, followed by a second evaluation of intraocular pressure (T2) and assessment of any side effects., Results: The hypothermic group (G1) showed a significant reduction in mean intraocular pressure between T1 (16.97 ± 2.59 mmHg) and T2 (14.97 ± 2.44 mmHg) (p<0.001). G2 showed no significant pressure difference between T1 (16.50 ± 2.55 mmHg) and T2 (17.00 ± 2.29 mmHg) (p=0.054). G3 showed a significant increase in pressure from T1 (16.53 ± 2.69 mmHg) to T2 (18.58 ± 2.95 mmHg) (p<0.001). At T1, there was no difference between the three study groups (p=0.823), but at T2, the mean values of G3 were significantly higher than those of G1 and G2 (p<0.00)., Conclusion: Temperature was shown to significantly modify intraocular pressure. Thermal masks allow the application of temperature in a controlled, reproducible manner. Further studies are needed to assess the duration of these effects and whether they are reproducible in patients with pathologies that affect intraocular pressure.

BACKGROUND Peracetic acid is among the disinfectants that irritate the upper respiratory tract, skin, and conjunctiva. It can cause symptoms of eye irritation, secondary to an inflammatory process that can lead to various manifestations. Irritation happens due to the high reduction potential of the acid, which causes the consequent release of reactive oxygen species. This fact serves to reinforce the importance of personal protective equipment when handling peracetic acid. CASE REPORT During an accident at work, a 21-year-old patient received a strong jet of disinfectant solution directly into both eyes. The composition of the disinfectant solution was 15% peracetic acid, 15-16% hydrogen peroxide, 22-23% acetic acid, and 16-17% horticultural sanitizers. Twenty-four hours after the incident, eye damage (punctate keratitis and low visual acuity) had occurred, and was treated by washing the eye with ice water and frequently applying lubricating eye drops. The next day, the patient returned with an improvement of irritative symptoms, but with a major complaint of low visual acuity in left eye, secondary to optic neuritis, detected by fundoscopy and confirmed by optical coherence tomography. In the following week, fluorescent angiography indicated the persistence of neuritis in the left eye. This was treated with prednisone, 40 mg/day, which brought about gradual improvement. Two months later, the patient returned with test results showing normal magnetic resonance imaging and negative serologies (for syphilis, HIV, and herpes virus), visual acuity 20/20 in both eyes, and normalization of angiography and optical coherence tomography parameters. CONCLUSIONS Until now, there have been no published studies demonstrating neuritis caused by direct contact of peracetic acid into the eyes. Therefore, this is the first report in the world literature of this manifestation of ocular exposure to peracetic acid. This is a chemical formulation that is widely useful and prevents the growth of various pathogens. Further investigation and studies on the subject should be encouraged to improve its management and use.

To evaluate the profile of ophthalmological manifestations of patients with chikungunya accompanied by the ophthalmology service at a reference center in the northeast region of Brazil. This retrospective study included the medical records of patients of the Leiria de Andrade Foundation (FLA) who presented ocular manifestations and had a history of prior Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) involvement. The data were collected between August 2018 and March 2019. A total of 230 patients participated in this study, 71.7% were female, and 46.1% were between 61 and 80 years old. Regarding previous pathological history, 71 patients (30%) had comorbidities, and 86 (37%) reported previous ophthalmologic pathology. The most common eye complaint was low visual acuity (LVA). Of the participants, 137 (59.6%) presented ophthalmologic manifestations after CHIKV infection, with cataracts being the most evident. Regarding medication, 85 participants used corticosteroids. The participants were predominantly female, aged between 61 and 80 years, and had previous comorbidities. LVA was the most reported complaint by patients, and cataracts were the main ophthalmological pathology presented.

Introduction: Trabeculectomy is the most commonly performed surgery for the definitive treatment of glaucoma. Despite its high resolvability, the postoperative period requires high caution so that excessive filtration or scarring does not occur. This paper aimed to research alternative options to those most used as healing modulators, mitomycin C (MMC) and 5-fluorouracil, commonly associated with complications., Methods: This systematic review used the PubMed and SciELO databases, covering publications from 1972 to 2019., Results: A total of 31 substances and methods were analyzed., Conclusion: Some, such as anti-VEGF, glucocorticoids and betatherapy, did not show results statistically superior to those of MMC. Others, such as the enzyme α5β1-integrin and Ologen ® , demonstrated efficacy and safety at least similar to that of this drug. In conclusion, further research is still needed for drugs that lead to the same results as mitomycin, but with fewer side effects. More recent studies have focused on technologies that increase communication between target tissues and antifibrotic molecules at the cellular level, being a promising bet for the future.
