Abstract

In this study, we report on the analysis of 701 stars in a solar vicinity defined in three categories namely subsolar, solar, and supersolar with rotation periods between 1 and 70 days, based on rotational modulation signatures inferred from time series from the Kepler mission's Public Archives. In our analysis, we performed an initial selection based on the rotation period and position in the period-H diagram, where H denotes the Hurst exponent extracted from fractal analysis. To refine our analysis, we applied a fractal approach known as the R/S method, taking into account the fluctuations of the features associated with photometric modulation at different time intervals and the fractality traces that are present in the time series of our sample. In this sense, we computed the so-called Hurst exponent for the referred stars and found that it can provide a strong discriminant of rotational modulation and background noise behavior, going beyond what can be achieved with solely the rotation period itself. Furthermore, our results emphasize that the rotation period of stars is scaled by the exponent H which increases following the increase in the rotation period. Abstract

We present a flexible and scalable approach to address the challenges of charged particle track reconstruction in real-time event filters (Level-1 triggers) in collider physics experiments. The method described here is based on a full-mesh architecture for data distribution and relies on the Associative Memory approach to implement a pattern recognition algorithm that quickly identifies and organizes hits associated to trajectories of particles originating from particle collisions. We describe a successful implementation of a demonstration system composed of several innovative hardware and algorithmic elements. The implementation of a full-size system relies on the assumption that an Associative Memory device with the sufficient pattern density becomes available in the future, either through a dedicated ASIC or a modern FPGA. We demonstrate excellent performance in terms of track reconstruction efficiency, purity, momentum resolution, and processing time measured with data from a simulated LHC-like tracking detector.

Abstract

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$ and let $G$ be a nonabelian residually torsion-free nilpotent group. It is known that $G$ is an orderable group. Let $k(G)$ denote the subdivision ring of the Malcev-Neumann series ring generated by the group algebra of $G$ over $k$. If $\ast$ is an involution on $G$, then it extends to a unique $k$-involution on $k(G)$. We show that $k(G)$ contains pairs of symmetric elements with respect to $\ast$ which generate a free group inside the multiplicative group of $k(G)$. Free unitary pairs also exist if $G$ is torsion-free nilpotent. Finally, we consider the general case of a division ring $D$, with a $k$-involution $\ast$, containing a normal subgroup $N$ in its multiplicative group, such that $G \subseteq N$, with $G$ a nilpotent-by-finite torsion-free subgroup that is not abelian-by-finite, satisfying $G^{*}=G$ and $N^{*}=N$. 45. Improving Teacher-Student Contact in a Campus through a Location-Based Mobile Application

Abstract

This paper presents a new mobile micro-broadcast (or near-me) Location-Based Service designed to promote face-to-face communication among users located within a given geographical area such as a University campus. Because the communication services provided are time dependent, the application decides whom to contact based on the geographic distance between the active subscribers of the service and the sender.
