Abstract

The handling of offshore payloads is a critical operation that presents numerous challenges, in particular related to the required precision in controlling their oscillations in a safe and accurate manner. The uncontrolled payload oscillations induced by the rolling movement of the vessel have been historically mitigated by the experience of on‐deck operators by means of taglines. The availability of experienced personnel is not always present, and a manual control operation still presents inconsistent performances and a high risk for the safety of men and machines. This study presents a novel approach to an antisway control conceived to mitigate such problems and possibly to automate some of the operations concerning the payload sway control that are currently done manually. In particular, a system consisting of a translating trolley actuated through a proportional–integral–derivative controller is taken into consideration to mitigate the oscillations induced by the vessel's rolling and pitching motion onto a three‐dimensional 8 degrees of freedom with double‐pendulum model representing the hanging payload. The study is completed through an analysis aimed to characterize the bandwidth and frequency response of the controlled closed‐loop system and highlight all the potential areas of interest for which further characterization is needed. Abstract

In the present paper, strong form finite elements are employed for the free vibration study of laminated arbitrarily shaped plates. In particular, the stability and accuracy of three different Fourier expansion‐based differential quadrature techniques are shown. These techniques are used to solve the partial differential system of equations inside each computational element. The three approaches are called harmonic differential quadrature, Fourier differential quadrature and improved Fourier expansion‐based differential quadrature methods. The improved Fourier expansion‐based differential quadrature method implements auxiliary functions in order to approximate functional derivatives up to the fourth order, with respect to the Fourier differential quadrature method that has a basis made of sines and cosines. All the present applications are related to literature comparisons and the presentation of new results for further investigation within the same topic. A study of such kind has never been proposed in the literature, and it could be useful as a reference for future investigation in this matter.

Abstract

The use of composite materials has grown exponentially in the last decades and has affected many engineering fields due to their enhanced mechanical properties and improved features with respect to conventional materials. For instance, they are employed in civil engineering (seismic isolators, long-span bridges, vaults), mechanical engineering (turbines, machine components), aerospace and naval engineering (fuselages, boat hulls and sails), automotive engineering (car bodies, tires), and biomechanical engineering (prostheses). Nevertheless, the greater use of composites requires a rapid progress in gaining the needed knowledge to design and manufacture composite structures. Thus, researchers and designers devote their own efforts to develop new analysis techniques, design methodologies, manufacturing procedures, micromechanics approaches, theoretical models, and numerical methods. For these purpose, it is extremely easy to find many recent journal papers, books, and technical notes, focused on the mechanics of composites. In particular, several studies are presented to take advantage of their superior features by varying some typical structural parameters (such as geometry, fiber orientations, volume fraction, structural stiffness, weight, lamination scheme). Therefore, this Conference aims to collect contributions from every part of the globe that can increase the knowledge of composite materials and their applications, by engaging researches and professional engineers and designers from different sectors. The same aims and scopes have been reached by the previous editions of Mechanics of Composites International Conferences (MECHCOMP), which occurred in 2014 at Stony Brook University (USA) and in 2016 at University of Porto (Portugal). The third edition of the Conference at University of Bologna (Italy) attracted more than 450 delegates from around the world of composites. Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the effect of the Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation on the natural frequencies of Carbon Nanotube (CNT)-reinforced laminated composite plates and shells. The micromechanics of reinforcing CNT particles are described by a two-parameter agglomeration model. CNTs are gradually distributed along the thickness direction according to various functionally graded laws. Elastic foundations are modeled according to theWinkler-Pasternak theory. The theoretical model considers several Higher-order Shear Deformation Theories (HSDTs) based on the so-called Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). The theory behind CNTs is explained in detail. The theoretical model presented is solved numerically by means of the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method. Several parametric studies are conducted, and their results are discussed. Abstract

The contribution of this work is the implementation of a new elastic solution method for thick laminated composites and sandwich structures based on a generalized unified formulation using finite elements. A quadrilateral four-node element was developed and evaluated using an in-house finite element program. The C-1 continuity requirements are fulfilled for the transversal displacement field variable. This method is tagged as Caliri's generalized formulation. The results employing the proposed solution method yielded coherent results with deviations as low as 0.05% for a static simply supported symmetric laminate and 0.5% for the modal analyses of a soft core sandwich structure.
