Abstract

In this work we study characteristic classes of possibly singular varieties embedded as a closed subvariety of a nonsingular variety. In special, we express the Schwartz-MacPherson class in terms of the $\mu$-class and Chern class of the sheaves of logarithmic and multi-logarithmic differential forms. As an application we show an expression for Euler characteristic of a complement of a singular variety.

2. Measuring the weak mixing angle at SBND

Abstract

The weak mixing angle provides a sensitive test of the Standard Model. We study SBND's sensitivity to the weak mixing angle using neutrino-electron scattering events. We perform a detailed simulation, paying particular attention to background rejection and estimating the detector response. We find that SBND can provide a reasonable constraint on the weak mixing angle, achieving 8% precision for $10^{21}$ protons on target, assuming an overall flux normalization uncertainty of 10%. This result is superior to those of current neutrino experiments and is relatively competitive with other low-energy measurements., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Nos seus 47 anos de vida, o poeta Fernando Pessoa construiu uma obra literária vastíssima, multiforme e plural. Inventou heterónimos, criou personalidades literárias, dirigiu revistas literárias e editoras, interveio na vida pública e tentou, por todos os meios que a sua fervilhante imaginação lhe permitia, ganhar dinheiro para poder dedicar-se inteiramente à sua obra literária. Do espólio depositado na Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa saem documentos que ilustram tanto a sua vasta atividade como tradutor e correspondente comercial em inglês e francês, quanto um punhado de textos que documentam a sua incessante tentativa para se tornar empresário – de tipografias, de editoras, de jornais e revistas, de mediador de concessões mineiras, de publicitário, de venda de propriedades nas colónias. Tendo falhado em todas as iniciativas que levou à prática, Fernando Pessoa foi um gigantesco empresário “virtual”, chegando mesmo a conceber autênticos grupos empresariais que cobrissem diversas atividades económicas, da produção industrial à exportação e à promoção externa dos produtos portugueses. E de tudo deixou testemunho escrito, porque nele tudo era matéria de escrita.

4. Heat-Bath and Metropolis Dynamics in Ising-like Models on Directed Regular Random Graphs

Abstract

Using a single-site mean-field approximation (MFA) and Monte Carlo simulations, we examine Ising-like models on directed regular random graphs. The models are directed-network implementations of the Ising model, Ising model with absorbing states, and majority voter models. When these nonequilibrium models are driven by the heat-bath dynamics, their stationary characteristics, such as magnetization, are correctly reproduced by MFA as confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations. It turns out that MFA reproduces the same result as the generating functional analysis that is expected to provide the exact description of such models. We argue that on directed regular random graphs, the neighbors of a given vertex are typically uncorrelated, and that is why MFA for models with heat-bath dynamics provides their exact description. For models with Metropolis dynamics, certain additional correlations become relevant, and MFA, which neglects these correlations, is less accurate. Models with heat-bath dynamics undergo continuous phase transition, and at the critical point, the power-law time decay of the order parameter exhibits the behavior of the Ising mean-field universality class. Abstract

In order to predict the static deformations and free vibration behaviour of thin and thick cross-ply laminated plates, we integrate Carrera’s unified formulation with a radial basis function collocation technique on a pseudospectral framework, using Reissner’s mixed variational theorem. Numerical examples illustrate the precision and effectiveness of this collocation technique for static and vibration problems.

Abstract

Enunciada nos principios de Oitocentos por Marc-Antoine Jullien, a educação comparada só começou a ganhar dignidade acadêmica no século XX. A expansão da educação comparada não ocorre sob o signo da uniformidade das abordagens. Mas se alguns têm visto nesta situação uma dificuldade de afirmação científica, preferimos compreendê-la como a resposta possível ao momento histórico que descobriu a incapacidade da ciência da explicação única em explicar a complexidade do mundo. Tendemos a considerar que uma abordagem sociodinâmica da educação comparada pode consumar uma síntese de contributos anteriores e dar sentido aos processos educacionais, elucidando, nomeadamente, sobre as relações espaciais, as interdependências com outros sectores da sociedade, a situação e as implicações da evolução histórica, as possibilidades e exigências tecnológicas, a dimensão da consciência e da mobilização ideológica, cruzando dados e metodologias no propósito de, por exemplo, localizar aspectos condicionantes ou determinantes, centros e periferias, fluxos de relações ou conflitos, homogeneidades ou heterogeneidade, permanências ou mudanças, protagonismos ou resistências na tentativa de saber as razões explícitas e as implícitas das políticas, a consistência das vontades, o alcance do realizado e o significado do não cumprido

44. Cluster structure of optimal solutions in bipartitioning of small worlds

Abstract

Using a simulated annealing, we examine a bipartitioning of small worlds obtained by adding a fraction of randomly chosen links to a one-dimensional chain or a square lattice. Models defined on small worlds typically exhibit a mean-field behaviour, regardless of the underlying lattice. Our work demonstrates that the bipartitioning of small worlds does depend on the underlying lattice. Simulations show that for one-dimensional small worlds, optimal partitions are finite size clusters for any fraction of additional links. In the two-dimensional case, we observe two regimes: when the fraction of additional links is sufficiently small, the optimal partitions have a stripe-like shape, which is lost for larger number of additional links as optimal partitions become disordered. Some arguments, which interpret additional links as thermal excitations and refer to the thermodynamics of Ising models, suggest a qualitatitve explanation of such a behaviour. The histogram of overlaps suggests that a replica symmetry is broken in a one-dimensional small world. In the two-dimensional case, the replica symmetry seems to hold but with some additional degeneracy of stripe-like partitions., Comment: 12 pages
