In this paper we present three newly rediscovered documents from the Royal Society archives that, together with the four described in our previous publications, constitute a set on a cognate theme. The documents were written by, or addressed to, members of the early Royal Society, and their subject is several magisterial formulae, including J. B. van Helmont's alkahest and Ludus. In addition to the interest in those formulae as medicines for various grave illnesses, our analysis showed that some seventeenth-century scholars sought to explain operations of the animal body by invoking similar but natural substances, while attempting to assimilate the latest anatomical discoveries into a novel framework. The complete set of documents sheds some new light on the interests of seventeenth-century networks of scholars concerned with experimenta.

Our archival researches at the Royal Society reveal that a small envelope attached to a 1675 letter from an Antwerp apothecary, A. Boutens, contained a sample of the 'Ludus' prepared as a remedy for the 'stone disease' then sweeping through Europe, which was first announced in J. B. van Helmont's De lithiasi (1644). After examining the fascination with the medical use of the Ludus (which required the 'alkahest' for its preparation) and the tenacious efforts to procure it, we trace the fortunae of two other ludi in England, brought to and offered by Francis Mercurius van Helmont during his English sojourn. Both eventually found their way to the geologist John Woodward, one of them through Sir Isaac Newton. Finally we show how the allure of the Ludus helmontii vanished, with transformations in mineral analysis and reclassifications from Woodward to John Hill.

History of science as a formal and autonomous field of research crosses over disciplinary boundaries. For this reason, both its production and its working materials are difficult to classify and catalog according to discipline-based systems of organization of knowledge. Three main problems might be pointed out in this regard: the disciplines themselves are subject to a historical process of transformation; some objects of scientific inquiry resist constraint within rigid disciplinary grids but, rather, extend across several disciplinary boundaries; and the so-called digital revolution has replaced spatial with temporal display sequences and shifted the traditional emphasis on knowledge to user-oriented approaches. The first part of this essay is devoted to a conceptual analysis of the various approaches to the organization of knowledge formulated over time, whereas the second considers the new possibilities afforded by a faceted model of knowledge organization compatible with user-oriented relational databases to the research materials and production of history of science.

Introduction: Several hemoglobin variants have electrophoretic behavior similar to hemoglobin S, which may lead to false diagnosis for sickle-cell disorders in newborn screening programs. A homozygous hemoglobin with S mobility was detected in two unrelated babies in Brazil., Methods: Isoelectric focusing and high-performance liquid chromatography assays, gene sequencing, and restriction fragment length polymorphism with AfeI were used to characterize the hemoglobin., Results: Hb Stanleyville-II and -α(3.7) /-α(3.7) type I deletion in the α-globin gene was diagnosed. Parents were heterozygous for both Hb Stanleyville-II and α-thalassemia. Hypochromia and microcytosis were probably due to the homozygous α-thalassemia., Conclusion: Stanleyville-II gene mutation is HBA2:c.237C>A, or C>G, and this information on the Globin Gene Server should be updated; AfeI test is a fast and accurate method to detect it; NBS programs should consider the possibility of Hb Stanleyville-II whenever IEF shows one band in the HbS position, and another one between S and C., (© 2011 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.)

Out of 128,326 newborns in the first 6-month period of a population-based screening program in Minas Gerais, Brazil, a second sample was obtained at the age of 6 months from 4,635 carriers of Hbs AS, AC, and AD which were detected by isoelectrofocusing. Discordance in results occurred in only 27 cases (0.6%): in seven there was a history of hemotransfusion; errors during pipetting or transcription of results occurred in seven cases; it was difficult to differenciate between Hbs S and D in eight patients; and the causes were not elucidated in five patients. The incidence of Hbs FS and FSC for the total population was 1:2,800 and 1:3,450, respectively. Isoelectrofocusing is a very reliable method for distinguishing AS, AC, or AD carriers from patients presenting with [corrected] variant hemoglobin and beta(+)-thalassemia combinations, and may be widely used in massive newborn screening programs.

This paper discusses works on chemical analyses of mineral waters in late 18th Century Portugal and the way these results were used by physicians when prescribing treatment with such waters. Furthermore, this research sheds some light on the application in Portugal of theories on composition and transformation of mater.
