Abstract

We study the $T {-} {\mu}$ phase diagram of quark matter under the influence of a strong uniform magnetic field in the framework of a nonlocal extension of the Polyakov Nambu Jona Lasinio model (PNJL). The existence of a critical end point (CEP) is found for the whole considered range of the magnetic field (up to 1 $GeV^{2}$). We analyze the location of this CEP as a function of the external field and discuss the presence of inverse magnetic catalysis for nonzero chemical potentials. Our results show that the temperature of the CEP decreases with the magnetic field, in contrast to the behavior observed in local NJL/PNJL models.

Abstract

We study the phase diagram in the $T-\mu$ plane for quark matter under the influence of a strong uniform magnetic field $\vec{B}$, in the framework of a non-local extension of the two-flavor Polyakov Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We analyze the deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration transitions in the mean field approximation. Abstract

We study the behavior of two-flavor dense quark matter under the influence of an external magnetic field in the framework of a nonlocal chiral quark model with separable interactions. The nonlocality is incorporated in the model by using a Gaussian form factor. It is found that for low and moderate values of magnetic field there is a decrease of the critical chiral restoration chemical potential $\mu_c$, i.e. an inverse magnetic catalysis effect is observed. For larger values of $eB$ the behavior of $\mu_c$ becomes more or less flat, depending on the parametrization. Within the considered parametrization range we do not find a significant growth of the critical chemical potential for large magnetic fields, as occurs in the case of the local NJL model.

Abstract

We examine the behavior of highly magnetized two‐light‐flavor quark matter within the context of a nonlocal NJL‐type model. This analysis assumes the chiral limit mc=0$$ \left({m}_c=0\right) $$ and incorporates the interaction between fermions and the Polyakov loop. Our calculations utilize a covariant Gaussian form factor. We present phase diagrams on the T−μ$$ T-\mu $$ plane, illustrating different magnetic field strengths. Additionally, we examine the critical endpoint's placement and the de Haas‐Van Alphen transitions within the chiral restored phase, observing their temperature‐dependent characteristics. Abstract

Climate change increases the occurrence and severity of droughts due to increasing temperatures, altered circulation patterns, and reduced snow occurrence. While Europe has suffered from drought events in the last decade unlike ever seen since the beginning of weather recordings, harmonized long-term datasets across the continent are needed to monitor change and support predictions. Here we present soil moisture data from 66 cosmic-ray neutron sensors (CRNSs) in Europe (COSMOS-Europe for short) covering recent drought events. The CRNS sites are distributed across Europe and cover all major land use types and climate zones in Europe. The raw neutron count data from the CRNS stations were provided by 24 research institutions and processed using state-of-the-art methods. The harmonized processing included correction of the raw neutron counts and a harmonized methodology for the conversion into soil moisture based on available in situ information. In addition, the uncertainty estimate is provided with the dataset, information that is particularly useful for remote sensing and modeling applications. This paper presents the current spatiotemporal coverage of CRNS stations in Europe and describes the protocols for data processing from raw measurements to consistent soil moisture products. The data of the presented COSMOS-Europe network open up a manifold of potential applications for environmental research, such as remote sensing data validation, trend analysis, or model assimilation. The dataset could be of particular importance for the analysis of extreme climatic events at the continental scale. Due its timely relevance in the scope of climate change in the recent years, we demonstrate this potential application with a brief analysis on the spatiotemporal soil moisture variability.

Abstract

Background Septic shock is characterized by breakdown of the endothelial glycocalyx and endothelial damage, contributing to fluid extravasation, organ failure and death. Albumin has shown benefit in septic shock patients. Our aims were: (1) to identify the relations between circulating levels of syndecan-1 (SYN-1), sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) (endothelial glycocalyx), and VE-cadherin (endothelial cell junctions), severity of the disease, and survival; (2) to evaluate the effects of albumin supplementation on endothelial dysfunction in patients with septic shock. Methods This was a retrospective analysis of a multicenter randomized clinical trial on albumin replacement in severe sepsis or septic shock (the Albumin Italian Outcome Sepsis Trial, ALBIOS). Concentrations of SYN-1, S1P, soluble VE-cadherin and other biomarkers were measured on days 1, 2 and 7 in 375 patients with septic shock surviving up to 7 days after randomization. Results Plasma concentrations of SYN-1 and VE-cadherin rose significantly over 7 days. SYN-1 and VE-cadherin were elevated in patients with organ failure, and S1P levels were lower. SYN-1 and VE-cadherin were independently associated with renal replacement therapy requirement during ICU stay, but only SYN-1 predicted its new occurrence. Both SYN-1 and S1P, but not VE-cadherin, predicted incident coagulation failure. Only SYN-1 independently predicted 90-day mortality. Albumin significantly reduced VE-cadherin, by 9.5% (p = 0.003) at all three time points. Conclusion Circulating components of the endothelial glycocalyx and of the endothelial cell junctions provide insights into severity and progression of septic shock, with special focus on incident coagulation and renal failure. Albumin supplementation lowered circulating VE-cadherin consistently over time. Clinical Trial Registration: ALBIOS ClinicalTrials.gov number NCT00707122.

Abstract

Background Pro-protein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) is a proenzyme primarily known to regulate low-density lipoprotein receptor re-uptake on hepatocytes. Whether PCSK9 can concurrently trigger inflammation or not remains unclear. Here, we investigated the potential association between circulating levels of PCSK9 and mortality in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock. Methods Plasma PCSK9 levels at days 1, 2 and 7 were measured in 958 patients with severe sepsis or septic shock previously enrolled in the Albumin Italian Outcome Sepsis (ALBIOS) trial. Correlations between levels of PCSK9 and pentraxin 3 (PTX3), a biomarker of disease severity, were evaluated with ranked Spearman's coefficients. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the association of PCSK9 levels at day 1 with 28- and 90-day mortality. Results Median plasma PCSK9 levels were 278 [182-452] ng mL-1 on day 1. PCSK9 correlated positively with PTX3 at the three time-points, and patients with septic shock within the first quartile of PCSK9 showed higher levels of PTX3. Similar mortality rates were observed in patients with severe sepsis across PCSK9 quartiles. Patients with septic shock with lower PCSK9 levels on day 1 (within the first quartile) showed the highest 28- and 90-day mortality rate as compared to other quartiles. Conclusion In our sub-analysis of the ALBIOS trial, we found that patients with septic shock presenting with lower plasma PCSK9 levels experienced higher mortality rate. Further studies are warranted to better evaluate the pathophysiological role of PCSK9 in sepsis.
