Abstract This research aimed to study the behavior of Holstein lactating cows, during the warm-season on a pasture constituted by elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) and spontaneous growing species intercropped with white clover (Trifolium repens L.) or forage peanut (Arachis pintoi Krap & Greg.). Evaluations were taken during three grazing in December, February, and April. Six cows between the second and fifth lactation month were used for each evaluation. The data were recorded at a 10 min-interval, from 6 P.M. to 6 A.M. and from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. The grazing time on elephant grass, on species established in space between lines, total grazing (elephant grass and species established in space between lines), rumination and idleness were the behavioral parameters observed. ABSTRACT Dairy activity is of great importance for the national economy. It is also an important source of income for families in the south east region of Paraná that work in this area. There has been a notable expansion in the activities as well as in the quantity of production and the quality of the products. With this has come problems in the reproductive efficiency of the dairy cattle principally in relation to those with the greatest production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the productive profile and the reproductive efficiency of dairy cows. The evaluation covered 30 days before calving and 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 days after the calving. The study covered cows from two properties in the Municipality of Realza-PR in Brazil. In order to do the aforementioned, we used the Body Condition Score (BCS). We evaluated the production of milk and through the use of gynecological exams and we looked at uterine involution (UI) and ovarian cyclicality. Resumo A pesquisa teve como objetivo estudar o comportamento ingestivo de vacas da raça Holandesa em lactação, durante o período estival, em pastagens constituídas por capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) e espécies de crescimento espontâneo, consorciadas com trevo branco (Trifolium repens L.) ou amendoim forrageiro (Arachis pintoi Krap. & Greg.). Foram feitas avaliações em três pastejos (dezembro, fevereiro e abril). Para cada avaliação utilizaram-se seis vacas entre o segundo e o quinto mês de lactação. O registro de dados foi realizado das 18 às 06 horas e das 08 às 16 horas, a cada 10 minutos. Os parâmetros comportamentais observados foram o tempo de pastejo em capim-elefante, pastejo das espécies estabelecidas na entrelinha, pastejo total (pastejo do capim-elefante e da forragem na entrelinha), ruminação e ócio. OBJETIVO: Um dos principais obstáculos para o controle da tuberculose é o abandono de tratamento. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a estratégia de retornos freqüentes instituída no Programa de Controle da Tuberculose de Ubatuba, bem como o Programa como um todo, identificando e quantificando os potenciais fatores de risco associados ao abandono. MÉTODOS: O estudo foi realizado em Ubatuba, Estado de São Paulo. Foram incluídos todos os pacientes (n=224) notificados pelo Programa de Controle da Tuberculose, nos dois anos anteriores e posteriores à implementação dos retornos freqüentes (1999). Efetuaram-se a análise descritiva dos pacientes, análise dos resultados de tratamento e de indicadores de avaliação do Programa. Foram realizadas análises univariadas e multivariadas para identificar possíveis fatores de risco associados ao abandono. Também foi avaliada a estratégia de retornos freqüentes por meio do teste do qui-quadrado. RESULTADOS: A estratégia reduziu o risco de abandono de tratamento de tuberculose de 12,3% para 4,9%. Os fatores de risco associados ao abandono foram não ter nenhuma escolaridade (OR=3,01; p=0,051), estar desempregado (OR=3,36; p=0,046) e ser dependente de álcool (OR=3,56; p=0,014). CONCLUSÕES: A estratégia de retornos freqüentes reduziu o risco de abandono de tratamento de tuberculose, embora os resultados não tenham alcançado significância estatística devido ao número reduzido de desfechos. Todavia, mostrou ser uma alternativa ao tratamento supervisionado para todos os pacientes, como recomendado pela Organização Mundial de Saúde.

Ao rever publicações científicas, foi construído um quadro descritivo sobre as relações interdisciplinares das pesquisas em Sistemas de Informação, delineando características, curso histórico e critérios metodológicos. Para tal, foi realizada uma análise de artigos publicados em periódicos internacionais no período entre 1985 e 2005, totalizando 105 artigos. Os resultados mostram a tendência para uma abordagem interdisciplinar entre a Ciência da Informação, a Ciência da Computação e a Ciência da Administração, configurando variáveis próprias e que interagem entre si.

As migrações conceituais fazem parte do trabalho científico e servem como um catalisador da evolução do conhecimento. Porém, a partir do momento em que se utiliza um conceito oriundo de uma dada ciência em outra, pode haver uma alteração do seu significado, comprometendo a transmissão do conhecimento. Nesse panorama, os pesquisadores em Sistemas de Informação, se vêem frequentemente às voltas com conceitos que migram entre as suas áreas limítrofes, como exemplo o conceito "Rizoma", originalmente criado na botânica, migrado para a filosofia por Deleuze e Guattari e posteriormente utilizado como conceito metodológico em pesquisas de Sistemas de Informação. Partindo da hipótese de que a migração conceitual entre as ciências é realizada sob a égide de diversas formações discursivas que se imbricam para estruturar o conceito migrado, foi utilizado como ferramental metodológico os princípios da "interincompreensão" pertencente à Análise do Discurso de Maingueneau (2008). Pelos artigos analisados foi possível constatar que, ao migrarem o conceito "Rizoma", os pesquisadores em Sistemas de Informação recorrem aos princípios da Autopoiese e do Conexionismo em forma de aliança no âmbito do interdiscurso, mas com uma formação distinta no cerne do conceito nos sentidos de "circularidade" e "virtualidade", o que leva a uma deformação caracterizada como "ecletismo conceitual".

Background: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease in an HIV-infected population during the highly active antiretroviral era has not been fully evaluated., Methods: A retrospective chart review of HIV-infected patients seen in 2004 was conducted to determine the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), using the 2004 National Kidney Foundation's CKD staging criteria. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was calculated, using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula. Univariate analyses were performed comparing individuals with normal kidney function and those with CKD. Multivariate analysis was conducted including all variables with a value of P < 0.1., Results: We found evidence of CKD in 24% of the patients. Forty patients (10%) had stage 1 CKD, 19 patients (4%) stage 2, 29 patients (7%) stage 3, 4 patients (1%) stage 4, and 8 patients (2%) stage 5. Patients with CKD are more likely to be African American (AA), older, have AIDS, lower CD4 counts and higher HIV viral loads. Patients with CKD were also more likely to have hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), or both. Indinavir or tenofovir exposure was associated with CKD. In multivariate analysis HTN, AA race, or HTN and DM were the only significant predictors of CKD. Physicians did not identify CKD in 74% of patients. Renal biopsies were done in 10 patients; 5 had HIV-associated nephropathy., Conclusions: Substantial minorities of HIV-infected patients have CKD. AA race or the presence of HTN or HTN and DM is associated with CKD. Clinicians often do not note the presence of CKD in this population.

Hydrothorax is an uncommon but well-recognized complication of peritoneal dialysis. Here, we describe a case of hydrothorax in a peritoneal dialysis patient who underwent video-assisted thorascopic surgery and talc pleurodesis for a diaphragmatic defect to preserve peritoneal dialysis capabilities. We reviewed the literature for 2001-2005 to assess how others have handled this situation and whether patients have returned successfully to peritoneal dialysis.

The standard method of studying inherited disease is to observe its pattern of distribution in families, that is, its pattern in a pedigree. For clinical studies focused on inherited disease, a pedigree diagram is a valuable visual tool for the display of inheritance patterns. We describe the creation of a web-based pedigree display module for Trial/DB, a Web accessible database developed at the Yale Center for Medical Informatics (YCMI) to support clinical research studies. The pedigree diagram is generated dynamically from the database. The icons representing each subject in the pedigree are selectable hyperlinks that will display detailed clinical data collected on the subject. Microsoft Active Server Page and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) are used to create the interactive pedigree diagrams.
