The tribe Amorphopini Günther, 1939 is reviewed. It consists of two genera:AmorphopusSeville, 1838 andEomorphopusHankock, 1907 with three Neotropical species:Amorphopus notabilisServille, 1838,Eomorphopus antennatus(Bolívar, 1887), andEomorphopus granulatusHancock, 1907. The tribe Amorphopini and all included taxa were redescribed and illustrated. A key to the genera and species is provided. Data on distribution, behavior, camouflage with lichens, polychromy, as well as ecological aspects of the species are reported.

The tribe Cleostratini Bolívar, 1887 sensu Storozhenko, 2016 does not represent a monophyletic taxon because it gathers various Tetrigidae genera with various types of horn and prolongation of frons or vertex. Prolongation of these structures is present in morphologically and biogeographically distant groups. We do not regard Miriatrini Cadena-Castañeda & Cardona, 2015 synonymous with Cleostratini because the genus Miriatra Bolívar, 1906 belongs to a group of genera distant from Cleostratus Stål, 1877. There is no adequate diagnosis for proposed groups of genera forming tribes Cleostratini or Miriatrini. Miriatrini stat. resurr. are monotypic and include only Miriatra, Cleostratini are monotypic as well. Apteromystrum Storozhenko, 2016 syn. n. is regarded synonymous with Metopomystrum, M. apterum comb. resurr., M. amazoniensis comb. resurr. and Miriatra brevifastigiata (Cadena-Castañeda & Cardona, 2015), comb. n. are not Metopomystrum member. Herein a new species of pygmy unicorn, Metopomystrum muriciense Silva & Skejo, sp. n., is described from Atlantic Forest remnants in northeast of Brazil, collected on the Estação Serra do Ouro (municipality of Murici, Alagoas state). Distribution data, morphological characterization, and an identification key to Metopomystrum species are also presented.

In this paper, we present the cytomolecular analysis of a population of Abracris flavolineata collected in the largest fragment of the Brazilian Atlantic forest, the Iguaçu National Park. The diploid number in males was 23 (22+X0), with two large pairs (1–2), 7 medium (3–9), 2 small (10–11) and the X chromosome of medium size. Heterochromatic blocks were evident in the pericentromeric regions of all chromosomes. Heterogeneity in the distribution of heterochromatin was observed, with a predominance of DAPI+ blocks. However, some chromosomes showed CMA3+ blocks and other DAPI+/CMA3+ blocks. The 18S rDNA sites were distributed on the short arms of 5 pairs. In two of these pairs, such sites were in the same chromosome bearing 5S rDNA, and one of the bivalents, they were co-located. Histone H3 genes were found on one bivalent. The results added to the existing cytogenetic studies provided evidence of great karyotypic plasticity in the species. This pliancy may be the result of vicariant events related to the geographical distribution of different populations of A. flavolineata.

Lophotettiginae is a small, peculiar taxon of the Neotropical region, characterized mainly by median carina compresso-cristated or leaf-like crest, antennae flattened laterally and expanding from the base to the apex (incrassate shape). This subfamily has only one genus known as Lophotettix Hancock, 1909 that comprises five species. Here, we reviewed the types of the five known species, highlighting morphological aspects that distinguish the species from each other and from other tetrigids. Additionally, we also provide a pictorial identification key to Lophotettix species. Our results indicated that Lophotettiginae is a well-defined taxon and there are no synonyms among its species.

Herein we describe a new species of Copiocerinae, Zygoclistron ruschii Silva n. sp., from Atlantic Forest remnants in southeastern Brazil, collected from the Reserva Biológica Augusto Ruschi in the Santa Teresa municipality, Espírito Santo state, Brazil. The diagnosis of this new species is based on phallic complex and terminalia characters.

This paper proposes new synonyms and combinations for species of Bolidorhynchus, Cephalocoema, Orienscopia, Pseudastroma and Scleratoscopia; phallic complexes, seminal receptacles and distributions are illustrated. Most of the synonymized species were originally described by Dr. Salvador de Toledo Piza Jr., whose types were found in the collection of the Museu da Escola Superior de Agricultura “Luiz de Queiroz”, Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brasil. Tetanorhynchus insignis Hebard, 1931 is transferred to Bolidorhynchus; T. montanus Piza, 1977 and T. fornicator Piza, 1981 are synonymized under Cephalocoema dubia (Mello-Leitao, 1939), and the lectotype of T. fornicator is designated; T. rostratus Piza, 1977, T. proximus Piza, 1981 and T. spitzt Piza, 1981 are synonymized under Cephalocoema sica (Serville, 1839); T. guairai Piza, 1981 is synonymized under Cephalocoema simillima (Piza, 1943); T. uruguaiensis Piza, 1977 is synonymized under Orienscopia angustirostris (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1890); Cephalocoem...

Os gafanhotos da família Ommexechidae são insetos exclusivamente neotropicais, de tamanho moderado, tipicamente achatados dorsoventralmente, com olhos protuberantes e tegumento rugoso. A família era composta, até o início deste trabalho (Ommexechidae sensu lato), por três subfamílias: Aucacridinae, com nove espécies agrupadas em quatro gêneros; Illapeliinae, com uma única espécie; e Ommexechinae, a mais diversa, com 23 espécies distribuídas em oito gêneros. O grupo foi revisado ao longo da década de 70 por Ricardo A. Ronderos, porém nunca foi estudado sob o enfoque filogenético. Este estudo teve como objetivo realizar a primeira análise cladística do grupo, utilizando caracteres exclusivamente morfológicos, de modo a testar a monofilia de todos os gêneros, das subfamílias e da própria família, e propor uma classificação supraespecífica para o grupo com base nos resultados obtidos. Como grupo-externo, foram incluídas quatro espécies de Tristiridae, uma espécie de Proscopiidae, uma de Eumastacidae, duas de Romaleidae e uma de Acrididae, e o enraizamento foi feito no nó que se ligava ao ramo terminal do proscopídeo. Dada a grande disparidade morfológica dos grupos incluídos, principalmente com relação à genitália masculina, diversas novas hipóteses de homologias precisaram ser formuladas para que a análise comparativa pudesse ser realizada. Foram examinados 681 exemplares ao total e propostas sinonímias entre algumas espécies (Ommexecha gracilis = O. brunneri e Clarazella signatifemora; Spathalium audouini = S. liebermanni; Calcitrena maculosa = Tetrixocephalus bilineatus), de modo que restaram 29 espécies como terminais para análise. Foram levantados 139 caracteres, sendo mais da metade destes referentes às genitálias masculina e feminina. Como resultado, foram obtidas duas árvores igualmente parcimoniosas, cujo consenso estrito resultou em uma única árvore com 405 passos. A árvore de consenso apresenta, de modo resumido, a seguinte hipótese de relacionamento: (Proscopiidae (Eumastacidae (Ommexechinae (Aucacridinae (Tristiridae+Illapeliinae (Romaleidae Acrididae)))))). Todos os gêneros de Ommexechidae sensu lato comportam-se como grupos monofiléticos no cladograma de consenso obtido. Contudo, é sugerida a sinonímia entre os gêneros Calcitrena (monotípico) e Tetrixocephalus, que se agrupam em um mesmo clado. As subfamílias de Ommexechidae sensu lato também formam grupos naturais, mas a família como um todo representa um agrupamento polifilético. Desse modo, são propostas algumas mudanças taxonômicas para adequar a definição dos grupos a uma classificação cladística: a única espécie de Illapeliinae é transferida para a família Tristiridae, e as subfamílias Atacamacridinae e Illapeliinae são sinonimizadas com Tristirinae; é definida uma nova família, Aucacrididae, para acomodar as espécies pertencentes até então à subfamília Aucacridinae; e a família Ommexechidae sensu Nov. passa a incluir apenas as espécies que pertenciam à subfamília Ommexechinae Grasshoppers of the family Ommexechidae are exclusively Neotropical insects, of moderate size, typically dorsoventrally flattened, with protuberant eyes and rough integument. The family consisted, until the beginning of this study (Ommexechidae sensu lato), of three subfamilies: Aucacridinae, with nine species grouped into four genera; Illapeliinae, with a single species; and Ommexechinae, the most diverse one, with 23 species distributed in eight genera. The group was revised in the 70s by Ricardo A. Ronderos, but it had never been studied under a phylogenetic approach. This study aimed to perform the first cladistic analysis of the group, using morphological characters only, in order to test the monophyly of all genera, subfamilies, and the family itself, and propose a supraspecific classification for the group based on the results obtained. As external group, four species of Tristiridae, one of Proscopiidae, one of Eumastacidae, two of Romaleidae and one of Acrididae were included, and the rooting was done on the node that was connected to the terminal branch of the proscopid. Given the wide morphological disparity of the groups included, particularly with respect to male genitalia, several new hypotheses of homologies needed to be formulated so that comparative analysis could be performed. A total of 681 specimens was examined and synonymies were proposed between certain species (Ommexecha gracilis = O. brunneri and Clarazella signatifemora; Spathalium audouini = S. liebermanni; Calcitrena maculosa = Tetrixocephalus bilineatus), so that 29 species remained for analysis. 139 characters were coded, more than half of these related to male and female genitalia. As a result, it was obtained two equally parsimonious trees, whose strict consensus resulted in a single tree with 405 steps. The consensus tree presents, in brief, the following hypothesis of relationship: (Proscopiidae (Eumastacidae (Ommexechinae (Aucacridinae (Tristiridae + Illapeliinae (Romaleidae Acrididae)))))). All genera of Ommexechidae sensu lato behave as monophyletic groups in the consensus cladogram. However, it is suggested a synonymy between the genera Calcitrena (monotypic) and Tetrixocephalus, which are grouped in the same clade. The subfamilies of Ommexechidae sensu lato also form natural groups, but the family as a whole represents a polyphyletic grouping. Thus, some taxonomic changes are proposed to fit the definition of the groups to a cladistic classification: the single species of Illapeliinae is transferred to the family Tristiridae, and the subfamilies Atacamacridinae and Illapeliinae are synonymized under Tristirinae; a new family, Aucacrididae, is defined to accommodate the species which belonged to the subfamily Aucacridinae until then; and the family Ommexechidae is redefined as to include only those species grouped so far in the subfamily Ommexechinae

Nymphal instars of Xyleus discoideus discoideus, a romaleid grasshopper, are described for the first time. The following characters are recorded for each stage: body length, head width, pronotal length, hind femoral length, number of antennomeres, number of longitudinal eye stripes and the morphology of wing pads and external genitalia. Criteria that can be used to distinguish the instars and sexes are identified. Males and females have a 5-instar cycle under laboratory conditions. Females are larger as adults than males and this is linked to a longer nymphal period in females.

The type material of Phasmatodea deposited in Brazilian museums and institutions is listed for the first time. New synonyms are proposed: Phibalosoma paulense Toledo Piza, 1938, Phibalosoma rochai Toledo Piza, 1938, Bacteria tuberculata Toledo Piza, 1938 and Bacteria tuberculata var. argentina Toledo Piza, 1938 are junior synonyms of Cladomorphus phyllinus (Gray, 1835). Nineteen new combinations are established. O material-tipo de Phasmatodea depositado em museus e instituições brasileiras é listado pela primeira vez. Novas sinonímias são propostas: Phibalosoma paulense Toledo Piza, 1938, Phibalosoma rochai Toledo Piza, 1938, Bacteria tuberculata Toledo Piza, 1938 e Bacteria tuberculata var. argentina Toledo Piza, 1938 são sinônimos júnior de Cladomorphus phyllinus (Gray, 1835). Dezenove novas combinações são estabelecidas.

O objetivo desse estudo foi relatar a ocorrência de proscopídeos e quantificar a infestação e a distribuição espacial do ataque em um plantio experimental com três clones de eucalipto. No plantio foram utilizadas mudas de eucalipto dos clones dos híbridos GG100 de Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis, H13 de Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis e VM01 de Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus camaldulensis, dispostas em três blocos com 512 mudas, em espaçamento de 3 m x 2 m, no município de Cáceres, Mato Grosso, Brasil. Dois meses após o plantio, foi detectada a infestação na área por proscopídeos, os quais foram coletados para identificação. As plantas atacadas foram georeferenciadas e as injúrias quantificadas. A determinação do padrão espacial do ataque pelos proscopídeos foi realizada com os dados de posição das plantas danificadas, que foram submedidas à análise por quadrats utilizando-se os índices de dispersão binomial e de Morisita. Todos os indivíduos coletados foram identificados como Tetanorhynchus smithi Rehn, 1904 (Orthoptera: Proscopiidae), tendo a infestação diferida significativamente entre os três clones de eucalipto, com distribuição espacial do ataque nas mudas das plantas do tipo agregado. Esta foi a primeira ocorrência desta espécie de proscopídeo em eucalipto no estado de Mato Grosso.

Os gafanhotos da família Proscopiidae são caracterizados pelo corpo delgado e pela cabeça alongada. A situação taxonômica do grupo sempre foi confusa devido ao fato da maioria das espécies terem sido descritas apenas com base em caracteres da morfologia externa, os quais apresentam muito pouca variação e são pouco informativos. O gênero Tetanorhynchus era, até o início do presente estudo, um dos mais numerosos da família, sendo formado por trinta e uma espécies. Contudo, nunca havia sido realizada uma revisão que considerasse todas as espécies do gênero em conjunto e que incluísse uma análise detalhada dos caracteres genitais masculinos e femininos. Para o presente estudo, foram reunidos 311 exemplares provenientes de diversas instituições, os quais incluíam os exemplares-tipo de todas as 15 espécies descritas por Piza e Wiendl, tidos como perdidos até então. Os tipos das outras 16 espécies foram analisados através de fotografias, ilustrações e descrições. Como resultado do presente estudo, o material examinado foi separado em 16 espécies. A espécie-tipo de Tetanorhynchus, T. punctatus, mostrou-se bastante distinta das outras espécies aqui reconhecidas. Scopaeoscleratoscopia simplex foi sinonimizada sob T. punctatus, o que levou à sinonímia de Scopaeoscleratoscopia sob Tetanorhynchus. A maior parte das outras espécies foi sinonimizada sob outras espécies conhecidas ou transferida para outros gêneros. Foram ainda estabelecidos dois gêneros novos para acomodar as espécies que apresentavam características distintas daquelas encontradas nos outros gêneros conhecidos para a família e que não poderiam mais ser classificadas em Tetanorhynchus sensu nov. No total, foram propostas 24 novas sinonímias e 10 novas combinações. The grasshoppers of the family Proscopiidae are easily characterized by the slender body and the elongated head. The taxonomy of the group is confusing since most of the species descriptions were based upon only the external morphology, which exihibits little variation and very few informative characters. Before the present study, the genus Tetanorhynchus Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1890 was among the most numerous of the family, with 31 species. Nevertheless, a revision of the genus taking into account all these species with a detailed analysis of male and female genital characters had never been accomplished. For the present study, a total of 311 specimens from several institutions were assembled, including type-specimens of all the 15 species described by Piza and Wiendl, which were considered lost until then. The types of the other 16 species were analysed through photographs, illustrations and original descriptions. As a result of this study, the examined material was classified into 16 species. The type-species of Tetanorhynchus, T. punctatus (Klug, 1820), is very different from the others species recognized here. Scopaeoscleratoscopia simplex Jago, 1989 was synonymized under T. punctatus, which resulted in the synonym of Scopaeoscleratoscopia Jago, 1989 under Tetanorhynchus. Most of the other species were synonymized under other known species or transferred to other genera. Two new genera were defined to include species with distictive characters from those found in other genera of the family and that could not be assigned to Tetanorhynchus sensu nov. In total, 24 new synonyms and 10 new combinations were proposed.

A taxonomia de Phasmatodea baseia-se essencialmente em caracteres de morfologia externa e características do ovo. A genitália masculina, estrutura com grande relevância taxonômica em outras ordens de insetos, foi examinada em poucas espécies de bicho-pau, sendo a sua morfologia ainda muito pobremente explorada para fins taxonômicos e filogenéticos. Das poucas análises filogenéticas realizadas até hoje em Phasmatodea, a maioria foi baseada em dados moleculares e focou nas relações entre grandes grupos, com apenas dois estudos abordando relações intragenéricas. Paraphasma Redtenbacher, 1906 é um gênero neotropical de bichos-paus pequenos e de aspecto delicado, com ambos os sexos possuindo asas posteriores bem desenvolvidas. Incluía, até o início deste estudo, dez espécies válidas, oito das quais com registro para o Brasil; trata-se de um gênero relativamente bem representado nas coleções brasileiras de Phasmatodea. Porém, assim como grande parte dos gêneros brasileiros de bichos-paus, Paraphasma encontrava-se taxonomicamente mal definido, e o conhecimento sobre suas espécies era praticamente restrito às descrições originais, normalmente muito superficiais, e a informações vagas de distribuição geográfica. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão taxonômica e análise filogenética de Paraphasma, buscando explorar o potencial taxonômico da genitália masculina de Phasmatodea. Foram examinados 407 exemplares (incluindo 38 tipos), estando representadas todas as espécies de Paraphasma e 18 espécies como grupo-externo da análise filogenética. A genitália masculina foi examinada e ilustrada para 22 espécies; foram verificadas prováveis homologias entre as espécies e propostos nomes para as regiões e estruturas da genitália. Foram definidos 80 caracteres morfológicos para a análise filogenética, dos quais 32 referemse à genitália masculina. Como resultado, Paraphasma passa a ter uma configuração bastante distinta da inicial, incluindo nove espécies, das quais três são espécies novas identificadas durante o estudo. O gênero foi redescrito, com base em morfologia externa e em características da genitália masculina e do ovo. Foram descritas as três espécies novas e redescritas as demais espécies de Paraphasma, incluindo a primeira descrição do macho de Paraphasma minus, do ovo de seis espécies e da genitália masculina de oito. Foram propostos dois novos gêneros (chamados aqui pelos nomes fictícios \"Aus\" e \"Bus\") para duas espécies previamente em Paraphasma, resultando nas novas combinações \"Aus\" amabilis e \"Bus\" cognatus. As decisões taxonômicas propostas incluem também outras cinco novas combinações [Paraphasma laterale, Paraphasma trianguliferum, Paraphasma umbretta, Prexaspes (Elasia) paulensis, Tithonophasma cancellatum], seis novas sinonímias de espécie [Phasma hopii, Phasma lineolatum e Stratocles dentatus sinônimos de Paraphasma laterale; Phasma quadratum sinônimo de Prexaspes (Elasia) pholcus; Phasma perspicillaris sinônimo de Stratocles xanthomela; Metriotes pericles sinônimo de Perliodes sexmaculatus], uma nova sinonímia de gênero (Oestrophora sinônimo de Paraphasma), uma espécie revalidada (Paraphasma umbretta) e um nome de espécie considerado nomen dubium (Paraphasma fasciatum). A genitália masculina correspondeu à principal fonte de informações para delimitação das espécies de Paraphasma. Além disso, os caracteres genitais foram, de forma geral, mais consistentes com a hipótese filogenética obtida do que os de morfologia externa, que se mostraram bastante homoplásticos. Os resultados da análise filogenética sugerem que as três subfamílias de Pseudophasmatidae (Pseudophasmatinae, Stratocleinae, Xerosomatinae) são polifiléticas. The taxonomy of Phasmatodea relies largely on external morphology and features of the egg. The male genitalia, which is highly relevant for the taxonomy of other insect orders, has been examined in only a few species of stick insects, and its morphology remains very poorly explored for taxonomic and phylogenetic purposes. Of the few phylogenetic analyses performed so far in Phasmatodea, most were based on molecular data and focused on the relations among large groups, with only two studies having addressed intrageneric relationships. Paraphasma Redtenbacher, 1906 is a Neotropical genus of small and delicate stick insects, with both sexes having well-developed hind wings. Until the beginning of this study Paraphasma included ten valid species, eight of which recorded from Brazil; the genus is relatively well represented in Brazilian Phasmatodea collections. However, like most Brazilian genera of stick insects, Paraphasma was taxonomically poorly defined, and the current knowledge about its species was essentially limited to superficial original descriptions and vague information concerning geographical distribution. The aim of this study was to perform a taxonomic revision and phylogenetic analysis of Paraphasma, seeking to explore the taxonomic potential of the phasmid male genitalia. A total of 407 specimens were examined (including 38 types), with all species of Paraphasma plus 18 species as outgroups for the phylogenetic analysis. The male genitalia of 22 species was studied and illustrated; probable homologies were found among species and names were proposed for regions and structures of the genitalia. Eighty morphological characters were defined for the phylogenetic analysis, of which 32 refer to male genitalia. As a result, Paraphasma now shows a very different conception, with nine valid species, including three new ones identified during this study. Paraphasma was redescribed, based on external morphology and features of the male genitalia and egg. The three new species were described and the other six species were redescribed, including the first description of the male of Paraphasma minus, the egg of six species and the male genitalia of eight. Two new genera were proposed (herein referred by the symbolic names \"Aus\" and \"Bus\") to include two species previously in Paraphasma, resulting in the new combinations \"Aus\" amabilis and \"Bus\" cognatus. Taxonomic decisions proposed here also include other five new combinations [Paraphasma laterale, Paraphasma trianguliferum, Paraphasma umbretta, Prexaspes (Elasia) paulensis, Tithonophasma cancellatum], six new species synonymys [Phasma hopii, Phasma lineolatum and Stratocles dentatus under Paraphasma laterale; Phasma quadratum under Prexaspes (Elasia) pholcus; Phasma perspicillaris under Stratocles xanthomela; Metriotes pericles under Perliodes sexmaculatus], one new genus synonymy (Oestrophora under Paraphasma), one resurrected species (Paraphasma umbretta) and one species name regarded as a nomen dubium (Paraphasma fasciatum). Male genitalia was the main source of information for species delimitation in Paraphasma. Furthermore, genital characters were generally more consistent with the phylogenetic hypothesis obtained than characters of external morphology, which turned out to be quite homoplastic. The results of the phylogenetic analysis suggest that the three subfamilies of Pseudophasmatidae (Pseudophasmatinae, Stratocleinae and Xerosomatinae) are polyphyletic.
