—We present a monographic treatment for the 13 species ofElaphoglossumsect.Polytrichiasubsect.Apoda(Dryopteridaceae). Molecular phylogenetic analyses have recovered this subsection as monophyletic within the so-called “subulate-scaled clade” ofElaphoglossum. Morphologically, the species ofE.subsect.Apodaare usually characterized by the presence of brightly colored stem scales (yellowish, orangish, or reddish, as opposed to castaneous to black), evenly distributed subulate scales on laminar surfaces, tiny glandular hairs on different parts of the leaves, and adult sterile leaves without hydathodes. The species can be divided into two groups: one with subsessile and the other with long-petiolate leaves.ElaphoglossumsubsectionApodais distributed from southern Mexico and the Antilles to Bolivia and midwestern Brazil.Elaphoglossum atehortuae, a new species from the Amazon region of Ecuador, is described, illustrated, and compared to its most similar species. It is unusual within this group for lacking subulate scales on both surfaces of the laminae, a character state that it shares withE. backhouseanum. Two species,E. polyblepharumandE. trichophorum, are included in the group for the first time, whereasE. procurrensandE. siliquoidesare excluded based on morphological characters and previously published molecular phylogenies. We also provide comments forE.×morphohybridum, which is a hybrid betweenE. alvaradoanumandE. crinitum. Lectotypes are designated forAcrostichum apodum,A. platyneuron,A. cubense,A. procurrens,A. trichophorum, andElaphoglossum auripilum, and epitypes are designated forA. apodum. To facilitate the identification of species, we provide keys, descriptions, illustrations, comments, synonyms, distribution maps, spore images, and a list of specimens examined.

To mark the commencement of his retirement as Nathaniel Lord Britton Curator of Botany, and appointment as Curator Emeritus at the New York Botanical Garden, we pay tribute to Robbin Moran and impact on the botanical community with a brief synopsis of his career. Naturalist, fern expert, adored teacher—it is difficult to adequately pay tribute to his accomplishments, and his impact on botany in a single article. Robbin has published four books, 13 monographs of neotropical fern clades, over 170 scientific papers, and dozens of popular articles. He has named 115 new species, five new genera, and one family of ferns. He is eponymized by seven new species and the genus Moranopteris. We recount his earliest days and academic trajectory to become a leading researcher and educator in pteridology. We highlight his major influences, scientific accomplishments, and outreach to the botanical community.

Este artigo apresenta o protótipo do aplicativo descartECO, projetado para auxiliar no processo de descarte adequado de fármacos e cosméticos. Esse aplicativo permite que os usuários contribuam para uma cidade mais limpa e evitem o descarte incorreto no meio ambiente. A plataforma Android Studio foi usada para o desenvolvimento preliminar e a API do Google Maps foi responsável pelo mapa, além de direcionar a assistência aos pontos de coleta. Espera-se que o descartECO auxilie na correta destinação final de fármacos e medicamentos.

A checklist of ferns and lycophytes from the Lagoa do Peri Municipal Park (LPMP), an Atlantic Forest remnant in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, is presented. Collections were made from October 2015 to April 2016. Herbarium specimens were also analyzed. A total of 81 species of ferns and one lycophyte were found, belonging to 14 families and 42 genera. The most representative families were Polypodiaceae (21 spp.) and Pteridaceae (12 spp.). Among the species, 44% were terrestrial, 31% epiphytes, 29% rupicolous, and 2% hemi-epiphytes. Macrothelypteris torresiana (Gaudich.) Ching, an exotic invasive species, was recorded. The number of species found here is lower than reported for similar areas, likely due to anthropogenic activities around and within the park. The constant urbanization occurring around the LPMP emphasizes the importance of the park for conservation of the Atlantic Forest and for maintaining the diversity of ferns and lycophytes.

We present a taxonomic treatment for the species of Didymochlaenaceae and Dryopteridaceae occurring in the region of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This study was based on 50 herbarium gatherings from IAN, K, NY, PACA, RB, SP, UPCB, US, and VIC. Didymochlaenaceae is represented by a single species, Didymochlaena truncatula, whereas Dryopteridaceae has 11 infrageneric taxa in seven genera: Ctenitis (four taxa, including two varieties), Megalastrum (two species), Mickelia, Parapolystichum, Polybotrya, Rumohra, and Stigmatopteris (one species each). Among the 12 infrageneric taxa here recognized, seven are endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Ctenitis distans var. isabellina, Megalastrum connexum, and Polybotrya speciosa are here reported for the first time in Viçosa. Identification keys, descriptions, illustrations, geographical distribution, and comments are presented to all taxa.

Part of this biodiversity is within protected areas. The development of online databases in the last years greatly improved the available biodiversity data. However, the existing databases do not provide information about the protected areas in which individual plant species occur. The lack of such information is a crucial gap for conservation actions. This study aimed to show how the information captured from online databases, cleaned by a protocol and verified by taxonomists allowed us to obtain a comprehensive list of the vascular plant species from the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, the first national park founded in Brazil. All existing records in the online database JABOT (15,100 vouchers) were downloaded, resulting in 11,783 vouchers identified at the species level. Overall, we documented 2,316 species belonging to 176 families and 837 genera of vascular plants in the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia. Considering the whole vascular flora, 2,238 species are native and 78 are non-native. New information The Parque Nacional do Itatiaia houses 13% of the angiosperm and 37% of the fern species known from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Amongst these species, 82 have been cited as threatened, following IUCN categories (CR, EN or VU), seven are data deficient (DD) and 15 have been classified as a conservation priority, because they are only known from a single specimen collected before 1969. A integração de IoT com computação em Névoa e Nuvem permite a implantação de ambientes de saúde pervasivos para auxiliar na prevenção e diagnóstico de doenças. Contudo, é necessário um gerenciamento mais inteligente para realizar o offload de tarefas computacionais nestes ambientes. Este trabalho propõe uma otimização para alocar e re-alocar requisições de processamento em máquinas na Névoa e Nuvem utilizando modelagem matemática. O objetivo é minimizar o custo de utilização da infraestrutura enquanto garante os requisitos das aplicações. Resultados apontam que a otimização gera soluções próximas do ótimo e a reotimização gera soluções ótimas em menos de 7 e 2,8 segundos em média, respectivamente, para instâncias com até 200 pacientes.

Background – Cyclodium is a neotropical fern genus comprising about ten species. Most species are found in northern South America, and the foothills of the Guiana Shield is an important region for species diversification. Our phylogenetic and taxonomic studies of the genus demonstrated the need to describe a new species and to recognize a variety at species level.Methods – This study is based on herbarium specimens from CAY, HUA, INPA, MBM, NY, P, RB, UC, UFP, UPCB, and US. Morphological characters were analyzed using standard procedures. The indumentum and spores of the new species were studied using a scanning electron microscope. Species delimitation is proposed based on our preliminary phylogenetic studies, as well as on morphology and geographical distribution.Key results – Cyclodium alansmithii Bohn & Labiak is recognized as a new species, described, and illustrated. The most similar species is Cyclodium inerme (Fée) A.R.Sm., from which it differs by ovate-lanceolate and bicolored scales, reduced fronds, truncate pinna bases, and non-ciliate indusia. Cyclodium alansmithii is currently assessed as Endangered (EN) using IUCN criteria, but more fieldwork and herbarium studies are necessary to establish a more accurate conservation assessment. Cyclodium trianae (Mett.) A.R.Sm. var. chocoense A.R.Sm. is here elevated to species rank. A key to species of Cyclodium with free veins is provided.

Elaphoglossum Schott ex J. Sm. sect. Polytrichia Christ is characterized by the presence of subulate scales and the absence of hydathodes. We did a molecular phylogenetic analysis using three non-coding plastid markers and found that five species thought to belong to section Elaphoglossum are actually members of section Polytrichia. The five species were previously thought to belong to section Elaphoglossum because they lack the characteristic subulate scales of section Polytrichia. We refer to these species as the Decursivum Group. We assign two other species to this group based on their morphological similarity to the known members of the group. Besides lacking subulate scales on the laminae, the seven species of the Decursivum Group are distinctive by having a submarginal connecting vein, a character otherwise absent in section Polytrichia. The group is entirely Neotropical, occurring at middle elevations and extending from the West Indies and Mexico to Bolivia and southeastern Brazil. For the Decursivum Group, we provide a taxonomic treatment including a key, descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps, discussion, and lists of specimens examined. Lectotypes are designated for Acrostichum miersii Baker and A. papyraceum Fée. A new species from the Andes, E. vascoae F. B. Matos & R. C. Moran, is described and illustrated.

A taxonomic treatment for the three species of Elaphoglossum sect. Squamipedia found in Brazil is presented. The section is monophyletic and most of its species are characterized by slender, 1–1.5 mm wide, long-creeping stems; the presence of two peg-like aerophores on the rhizome just behind each petiole; pale brown stem scales; the absence of phyllopodia and hydathodes; and echinulate spores. Elaphoglossum peltatum is unique among the Brazilian species of the genus by having sterile leaves with divided laminae. Within the country, E. minutum is known from only two gatherings made in the state of Goias, where it grows in gallery forests around 700 m. Elaphoglossum peltatum is found on the mountains of the northern Amazon and disjunctly in eastern Brazil, from 800 to 2000 m. Elaphoglossum squamipes occurs on the coastal mountains of Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar, where it grows in cloud forests above 800 m. None of the three species is endemic to Brazil. We provide identification keys, descriptions, synonyms, comments, line drawings, spore images, distribution maps, and an index of herbarium vouchers to all species accepted in this treatment. A lectotype is designated for Acrostichum craspedariiforme and a second-step lectotype for Osmunda peltata. Additionally, E. ovatum is here excluded from the Brazilian flora.

In the video transmission of critical urban events, e.g., heart attacks, supported by VANETs, intermittent connections, delays, packet losses, and the number of vehicles in collaboration naturally impair the dissemination of data, and hence affect the quality of received video at the destination. Crowdsensing solutions become a real option in helping to handle these events. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of the characteristics of urban VANETs on the human perception of the spatio-temporal context from monitored videos of critical events. We use the MINUET system to assess the quality of videos disseminated and delivered to city authorities, using QoS and QoE metrics, and under different traffic scenarios. Simulated results indicate the system achieves quality levels from satisfactory to good in most of the evaluated scenarios, i.e. average PSNR values between [25-40]dB and average SSIM values between [0.5-1]. In addition, even in adverse situations for detecting the event, video was delivered with a level of quality sufficient to recognize the event.

A major challenge for improving conservation actions is to know the plant richness, protected by these areas. Online databases offer an accessible way to build plant species lists and to provide relevant information about biodiversity. A list of land plants of Parque Nacional do Caparao (PNC) was previously built using online databases and published on the website Catalogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservacao do Brasil. Here, we provide and discuss additional information about plant species richness, endemism and conservation in the PNC that could not be included in the List. We documented 1,791 species of land plants as occurring in PNC, of which 63 are cited as threatened (CR, EN or VU) by the Brazilian National Red List, seven as data deficient (DD) and five as priorities for conservation. Fifity-one species were possible new ocurrences for ES and MG states. New information Parque Nacional do Caparao houses 8% of the land plant species endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, including 6% of its angiosperms, 31% of its lycophytes and ferns and 14% of its avascular plants. Twelve percent of the threatened species listed for the State of Espirito Santo and 7% listed for the State of Minas Gerais are also protected by PNC. Surprisingly, 79% of the collections analysed here were carried out in Minas Gerais, which represents just 21% of the total extension of the Park. The compiled data uncover a huge botanical collection gap in this federally-protected area. Critical urban events need to be efficiently handled, for instance, through rapid notification. VANETs are a promising choice in supporting notification of information on arbitrary critical events. Although the dynamicity of VANETs compromises the dissemination process, the connections among vehicles based on users' social interests allow for optimizing message exchange and data dissemination. This paper introduces SOCIABLE, a robust data dissemination system for critical urban events that operates in a SIoV network. It is based on vehicles' community with common interests and/or similar routines and employs social influence of vehicles according to their network location to select relay vehicles. In a comparative analysis on NS3 with the MINUET system, SOCIABLE achieved 36.56% less packets transmitted in a dense VANET and a maximum packet delivery delay of 28ms in a sparse VANET, delivering critical event data in a real-time and robust way without overloading the~network., Accepted for presentation at the IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM) 2020

The treatment of mobile and simultaneous critical urban events requires effective actions by the appropriate authorities. Additionally it implies communication challenges in the speed and accuracy of their occurrence by the entities, as well as dealing with the dynamics and speed in these environments. Cooperative solutions with shared resources that address these challenges become a real option in helping to handle these events. This paper presents an evaluation of dynamic monitoring and collaborative dissemination supported by vehicular groups. It aims to analyze the impact of multiple mobile and fixed events in an urban environment on information propagation, considering barriers imposed by the events and the environment. Differently from other studies in the literature, this work takes into account both fixed and mobile events, as well as simultaneous events. NS3 results show that the evaluated system monitored at least 87% and 51.5% of the time for mobile and fixed events respectively, and delivered information over 77% and 50% of the time for those events, with average delay remains close to 0.3s in most scenarios. The results also reveal that a more continuous monitoring of the mobile events is highly dependent on the orientation of the vehicles. The main contribution of this work consists of the performance analysis of both fixed and mobile simultaneous events to support studies on how moving events impact on the dissemination and delivery of real-time data, and thus encouraging the development of new data dissemination protocols for VANETs., This work has been submitted to the Wireless Networks (WINE) journal for possible publication

We describe Anemia paripinnata, a new species from the rock outcrops of Central Brazil. It is remarkably distinct from most of its congeners by having paripinnate lamina, a character that is only found in the Amazonian A. dardanoi. The new species is described, illustrated, and compared to the most similar species in the genus. The new species is known from few collections in Mato Grosso. Based on the IUCN criteria, it can be considered an endangered species.

We show that Elaphoglossum megalurum, previously thought endemic to Peru and Bolivia, and E. subciliatum, previously thought endemic to Costa Rica and Panama, are later heterotypic synonyms of E. litanum, a species described from northwestern Ecuador. The revised distribution of this species is now construed as Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. The species has a wide elevational range, occurring from (20–)100–1400 m. In South America, it occurs on both the eastern and western sides of the Andes. A complete list of synonyms and their types, a description, specimens examined, and a distribution map is given for E. litanum as recognized in this new, more inclusive sense. A lectotype is designated for E. carillense, which has long been considered a synonym of E. subciliatum, and a second-step lecotype is designated for E. litanum.

Among the Campyloneurum that occur entirely or primarily in the Atlantic Rain Forest of Brazil, three species have been previously referred to by the following six names: C. acrocarpon, C. crispum, C. herbaceum, C. lapathifolium, C. minus, and C. wacketii. We show that C. crispum and C. herbaceum are the correct names for two of the species, and we designate lectotypes for these two names. The third species, which ranges from Brazil to Argentina and Paraguay, lacks a name and is here newly described as C. atlanticum. Two of the previously used names, C. acrocarpon and C. wacketii, are considered synonyms of C. crispum. The remaining names, C. lapathifolium and C. minus, appear to be of uncertain application. Based on our field studies, C. atlanticum and C. herbaceum are primary hemiepiphytes. Our finding constitutes the first report of this growth habit in the genus. Eventos urbanos emergenciais ocorrem de forma aleatória e precisam ser tratados por entidades competentes para manter o bom funcionamento das cidades. Os principais desafios para um tratamento eficiente recaem justamente na aleatoriedade no tempo ou no espaço, e na rapidez e acurácia da comunicação da ocorrência do evento à uma entidade responsável, sendo este último desafio agravado pelo fato desta comunicação depender de intervenção humana. A onipresença de veículos em ambientes urbanos, sua capacidade de comunicação e monitoramento, possibilitam o uso de VANETs como meio de auxílio para disseminação e tratamento destes eventos. Assim, este artigo propõe MINUET, um sistema de monitoramento e disseminação de eventos urbanos, que atua em uma rede veicular não estruturada. Ele é baseado em uma estratégia cooperativa, onde veículos coordenam dinamicamente o monitoramento e a disseminação de múltiplos eventos em tempo real através de agrupamentos. Resultados no NS3 mostram o desempenho do MINUET na detecção, monitoramento e disseminação em tempo real de eventos em zonas urbanas.

The service interaction provided by objects in IoT networks enables the creation of advanced services to answer application requests. However, the growing number of objects into the IoT network, besides its ad hoc structure, are disturbing some functionalities, such as service discovery. Therefore, when searching for services, the navigability is impaired because the system needs to sweep a great quantity of objects without a previous organization. Social Internet of Things (SIoT) emerged as an alternative to solve several problems faced by IoT through the concept of social networks. In SIoT each object has its own social profile, which contains its characteristics and information, and are organize by relationships. Thus, this research propose a solution for service discovery in a SIoT network. This solution uses the relationships between objects to improve the discovery scalability and considers their social profiles to meet more satisfactorily the requisitions. Simulated results demonstrates the solution performance to answer service requisitions in an urban SIoT network.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-02-01 Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. The implementation of the Internet of Things paradigm in the most diverse environments is already a reality. One of these environments is the smart hospital that uses several devices to improve patient care and streamline the internal processes of hospitals. However, an obstacle in the use of IoT systems is the difficulty encountered by their user to change devices behaviours as their needs changes. When the users can not update, the system may be outdated. This leads to problems in the hospital which is a critical environment and needs everything to be working properly every time. A way to customize the behavior of IoT devices is the use of police that can be described in high-level programming language. For this reason, this paper proposes a solution that uses policy refinement to assist IoT device management in smart hospitals. The proposed solution was implemented and tested, achieving favorable results for the hospital scenario.

The service interaction provided by objects in IoT networks enables the creation of advanced services to answer application requests. However, the growing number of objects into the IoT network, besides its ad hoc structure, are disturbing some functionalities, such as service discovery. Therefore, when searching for services, the navigability is impaired because the system needs to sweep a great quantity of objects without a previous organization. Social Internet of Things (SIoT) emerged as an alternative to solve several problems faced by IoT through the concept of social networks. In SIoT each object has its own social profile, which contains its characteristics and information, and are organized by relationships. Thus, this research propose a solution for service discovery in a SIoT network. This solution uses the relationships between objects to improve the discovery scalability and considers their social profiles to meet the requisitions in a more satisfactorily way. Simulated results demonstrates the solution performance to answer service requisitions in an urban SIoT network.

Elaphoglossum mickeliorum, a new species from the eastern slopes of the Peruvian Andes, is here described and illustrated. It belongs to E. sect. Polytrichia, which is characterized by the presence of subulate scales and absence of hydathodes on the sterile leaves of adult sporophytes. Herbarium specimens of this new species were first collected by Alwyn H. Gentry ca. 40 years ago, but these got readily confused with E. erinaceum and went undescribed since then. The new species differs from members of the E. erinaceum complex by having a nearly continuous band of planar, nonsubulate scales along the laminar margins of sterile leaves. Based on this character, E. mickeliorum resembles species such as E. glaziovii, E. ornatum, and E. scolopendrifolium. It differs from these by the presence of minute glandular hairs on petioles and costae. A distribution map and a figure with line drawings are also provided. For comparative purposes, the line drawing includes E. blepharoglottis, which is here illustrated for the first time.

Critical urban events take places at a random way and they need to be dealt with by public authorities quickly to maintain the proper operation of cities. The main challenges for an efficient handling of an event fall precisely in its random nature, and in the speed and accuracy of the notification of its manifestation to the authority. The pervasiveness of vehicles in urban environments, and their communication and monitoring capabilities, allow to employ VANETs to support the dissemination and handling of such events. Thus, this work proposes MINUET, a dynamic system to support the monitoring and dissemination of urban events, which operates in an ad hoc vehicular network. It uses a cooperative-based strategy where vehicles are able to dynamically coordinate the monitoring and dissemination of events in real time by the means of clusters. We present a taxonomic revision for Cyclodium, a neotropical fern genus that is most diverse in the Amazon lowlands, especially in the Guianas and Venezuela, but also extending to Central America, the western Andes and southeastern Brazil. The genus belongs to the Dryopteridaceae and is distinguished from other genera in this family by its dimorphic fronds and peltate indusia. We recognize 13 species of Cyclodium, for which we provide morphological descriptions, distribution maps, an identification key, illustrations and taxonomic comments. Cyclodium pubescens is described as new to science, C. meniscioides var. paludosum and C. meniscioides var. rigidissimum are synonymized under C. meniscioides, and C. heterodon var. abbreviatum is synonymized under C. heterodon. Lectotypes are designated for Aspidium confertum, A. guianense, C. rigidissimum, Dryopteris calophylla and Polystichum inerme. We also provide an assessment on conservation status for each species following IUCN categories and criteria.

Recentemente, uma grande quantidade de dispositivos médicos conectados e sistemas de TI destinados à saúde estão sendo desenvolvidos e integrados para o compartilhamento de dados. Tais dispositivos e sistemas compartilham a mesma rede, podendo ser acoplados a sistemas de monitoramento e análise de dados clínicos. Em decorrência deste compartilhamento, tráfegos prioritários de dispositivos médicos podem ser prejudicados por congestionamentos de rede. Nesse cenário, este artigo propõe uma solução baseada em SDN (Software Defined Networks) para o gerenciamento de uma rede hospitalar através da priorização de tráfego para dispositivos médicos prioritários. Esta solução busca a observância dos parâmetros de qualidade exigidos por cada serviço em um ambiente de hospital inteligente.

In Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) with more than one access point (AP), the handoff process plays a crucial role to guarantee the user service continuity. Usually initiated by the client’s equipment, it occurs smoothly on the order of seconds. However, despite being functional and well-established, this process can be inadequate in scenarios where users are executing multimedia applications, such as real-time video streaming or VoIP. For these applications, those few seconds may cause loss of packets, resulting in loss of essential information. Because of that, this study proposes a Software Defined Wireless Networking (SDWN) approach, in which a controller decides when to initiate the handoff process and chooses the AP the client’s device must connect. This approach was implemented in a testbed scenario and the results have shown its efficiency by decreasing the handoff delay and providing more stability to the process.

Elaphoglossum fendleri, a new species from the cloud forests of Venezuela, is here described and illustrated. The type specimens were collected by Augustus Fendler ca. 160 years ago but had gone unnoticed since then. Some authors have confused it with E. ornatum, a subulate-scaled species that is restricted to the Venezuelan Andes. Elaphoglossum fendleri is also endemic to Venezuela, but it is known only from the Coastal Cordillera and Sierra de San Luis. It is characterized by short petioles densely covered with orangish, flattish, setose-margined scales; oblanceolate laminae with acute apices and truncate bases; and a fringe of laciniate scales along the sterile laminar margins. We provide comments, line drawings, SEM images, and a map of geographic distribution that will help to distinguish the two species.

Cooperation among service providers, network providers, and access providers in the Internet allows the creation of new services to offer to customers that are in other domains, thus increasing revenue. However, the Internet heterogeneous environment, where each provider has its own policies, infrastructure and business goals, hinders the deployment of more advanced communication services. This paper presents a Quality of Service (QoS) for Inter-Domain Services (QIDS) model that allows inter-domain QoS-aware services to be defined, configured, and adapted in a dynamic and on-demand fashion, among service providers. This is accomplished by: 1) the use of a common communication channel (business layer) where service providers publish and search for services, and interact with each other to contract and manage these services; 2) the templates to specify the business and technical characteristics of the services; 3) the automatic composition of services using service elements (smaller services) according to performance and service-specific QoS parameters; and 4) the creation and enforcement of configuration rules for the underlying infrastructure. A prototype was implemented to validate QIDS and performance tests were conducted on an inter-domain Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)/Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Virtual Private Network (VPN) scenario.

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) are signature-based software tools that provide mechanisms for detection and analysis of network intrusions. Using an experimental scenario and real traffic collected at a higher education institution in Brazil, we evaluate the performance of Snort and Suricata IDSs for detection of current Distributed Denial-of-Services attack (Slowloris). Our study has found the IDS Suricata is not a suitable number for alerts to catch the attention of the network manager about the Slowloris attack, while Snort IDS does. Evaluation of CPU consumption and memory of target server. In addition, an analysis of offline traffic reveals that the higher education institution is under DDoS attacks during the analyzed period.

With the growing interest in Smart City using Internet of Things (IoT) the focus in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has increased, and consequently has been used to monitor numerous environments, such as health, habitat control, houses and public transportation. Due this expansion, the numbers of technologies and researches on bus monitoring systems has increase. Thereby, this survey provides information about researches, used technologies, implementation, difficulties and problems on bus monitoring systems.

Most studies on ferns focus on the adult sporophytes, overlooking the gametophyte as a potential source of biological information. Herein, field-collected gametophytes and young sporophytes of Elaphoglossum decursivum are described with the aims of providing a more complete understanding on the morphology of this species and additional morphological characteristics for its sectional classification. Gametophytes share the general morphology of most other Elaphoglossum species, but one unusual observation was the presence of minute scales (proscales) on the thallus. Young leaves differ from the glabrous adult leaves by having papillate glandular hairs. These are the first observations of hairs in the glabrous sect. Elaphoglossum. Our study shows that the gametophytes and young sporophytes of E. decursivum have indument characters that are not present in the adult sporophytes, and studying these life stages could potentially be useful in a phylogenetic context.

We correct a number of omissions and errors in the previous series of publications of the “Prodromus of a fern flora for Bolivia”. Most importantly, we correct the combining authorship for Didymoglossum punctatum subsp. sphenoides (Kunze) Boudrie & Cremers, add missing information on Elaphoglossum latevagans Mickel, and validly publish the new combination and status for Hypolepis rigescens var. buchtienii (Rosenst.) Schwartsb. and new combination Christella abrupta (A.R.Sm.) A.R.Sm., previously called C. grandis, which was invalidly published.

Elaphoglossum clathratum F. B. Matos & R. C. Moran sp. nov. (Dryopteridaceae), which grows at middle elevations on the eastern side of the Andes in Ecuador, is described, illustrated, and compared to its most similar species. It is unusual in Elaphoglossum by having lamina margin scales that are strongly clathrate. Research on the phylogeny of the genus has shown that the new species belongs to Elaphoglossum sect. Polytrichia . However, it is unique in the subulate-scaled clade of Elaphoglossum by having planar, not subulate, scales.

A new species, Diplazium fimbriatum (Athyriaceae), is described and illustrated. It is endemic to the humid montane forests of eastern Brazil, a region known for its high level of endemism and species richness. A comparative table to distinguish it from similar species of Diplazium occurring in Brazil is provided.

We provide a synopsis of the 207 species of Dryopteridaceae in 15 genera currently known from Bolivia. This is the secondmost species-rich fern family in the country and includes the most diverse genus ( Elaphoglossum with 127 species). No fewer than 32 species of Dryopteridaceae are endemic to Bolivia. Elaphoglossum catenatum , a new species from the Bolivian Yungas, is here described and illustrated. We also provide a new combination for Acrostichum papyraceum in Elaphoglossum and designate a lectotype for Elaphoglossum ambiguum . Illustrations for all Bolivian taxa of Elaphoglossum are provided. Taxonomic problems remain in a number of genera, especially Elaphoglossum , Megalastrum , and Polystichum .

Cyathea atrocastanea, a new species of tree fern is described, illustrated, and compared with similar species. This new species should be classified as vulnerable (VU) according to the IUCN criteria. This species is distinct by its atrocastaneous and scurfy petiole, and rachis, and by the broad ovate and yellowish, nonbullate scales on the costulae and midveins. A key to the exindusiate species from southeastern Brazil with nondenticulate petiole scales is also presented.

Asplenium truncorum, a new asplenioid fern from the Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest, is described, illustrated and compared to the most similar species. So far, it seems to be restricted to the montane moist forests of southern Bahia and Espirito Santo States, at elevations of 750 to 950 m. Field observations suggest that this species grows exclusively as an epiphyte on the trunks of tree ferns, especially Alsophila setosa Kaulf. (Cyatheaceae).

A new hybrid, Micropolypodium xbradei, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is described and illustrated. It shows intermediate morphology between its parents, M. setosum and Terpsichore achilleifolia, in dissection of blades and veins, and number of sori per segment. New combinations for Brazilian endemic species are presented based on this hybrid and on recent results in grammitid phylogenetics.

Managing a wireless sensor network is not a trivial task. Due to its limitations, such as sensors equipped with low power batteries, it is essential to extend the lifetime of the network. This task becomes harder when dealing with heterogeneous wireless sensor networks, in which sensors have different physical characteristics, such as battery capacity and radio transmission range. This paper proposes a model to dynamically select a sensor allocation approach in order to choose a set of sensors to process an application request. This selection takes into account the application characteristics and the physical aspects of the sensors.

The number of urban vehicles has increased in the past years causing innumerous problems such as traffic jams, accidents and pollution. One of the main solutions for this problem is to improve the quality of public transportation by making it more reliable, secure and efficient. In this paper, it is proposed a system for monitoring urban vehicles based on ZigBee technology, called MUV-Bee. Such system uses wireless communication to integrate the main server to public transportation buses and bus stops. Its several services provided to society allow a better quality of public transportation which make them more attractive.

This compilation of ferns and lycophytes in Brazil is an update of the one published in 2010 in Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. The methodology consisted in collecting data from regional checklists, taxonomic revisions, and selected databases. Invited specialists improved the list accessing a website housed at the Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro. The results show 1,253 species: 1,111 of ferns and 142 of lycophytes. This number is 6.5% higher than the previous one (1,176 spp.). The percentage of endemic species decreased from 38.2% to 36.7%. We recognized 36 families and 133 genera (vs. 33 families, 121 genera in 2010). The 10 most diverse families are Pteridaceae (196 spp.), Dryopteridaceae (179), Polypodiaceae (164), Hymenophyllaceae (90), Thelypteridaceae (86), Aspleniaceae (78), Lycopodiaceae (64), Selaginellaceae (55), Anemiaceae (51), and Cyatheaceae (45). The three most diverse genera are still Elaphoglossum (87 spp.), Thelypteris (85), and Asplenium (74). The richest phytogeographic domain continues to be in the Atlantic Rainforest with 883 species which also has the largest number of endemic and threatened species, followed by the Amazon Rainforest (503), Cerrado (269), Pantanal (30), Caatinga (26), and Pampa (eight). Minas Gerais remains as the richest state (657 spp. vs. 580 in 2010). A metodologia consistiu na reunião de dados de listas regionais, revisões de grupos e bancos de dados selecionados. Especialistas convidados melhoraram a lista através do acesso a um sítio da web do Jardim Botânico do Rio Janeiro. Os resultados apontam uma diversidade de 1.253 espécies, sendo 1.111 samambaias e 142 licófitas. Este número é 6,5% maior que o anterior (1.176 espécies). As espécies endêmicas decresceram de 38,2% para 36,7%. Foram reconhecidas 36 famílias e 133 gêneros (vs. 33 famílias, 121 gêneros em 2010). Pleroma setosociliatum (Cogn.) F.S. Mey. & F.B. Matos, from the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, Brazil, has been indicated, still as a name in Tibouchina, as a synonym of T. dubia (Cham.) Cogn. on several floras and electronic databases. However, field observations and a more detailed analysis of herbarium specimens, including the types, led to the conclusion that these two species are distinct. They differ from each other not only in geographic distribuition, but also in growth habit, leaf size, indument, and dimensions of the connectives on antesepalous stamens. Tibouchina setosociliata is here transferred to Pleroma on the basis of morphology and results of a previously published molecular phylogeny.
