Enhancing ocean productivity by artificial upwelling is evaluated as a nature-based solution for food security and climate change mitigation. Fish production is intended through diatom-based plankton food webs as these are assumed to be short and efficient. However, our findings from mesocosm experiments on artificial upwelling in the oligotrophic ocean disagree with this classical food web model. Here, diatoms did not reduce trophic length and instead impaired the transfer of primary production to crustacean grazers and small pelagic fish. The diatom-driven decrease in trophic efficiency was likely mediated by changes in nutritional value for the copepod grazers. Whilst diatoms benefitted the availability of essential fatty acids, they also caused unfavorable elemental compositions via high carbon-to-nitrogen ratios (i.e. low protein content) to which the grazers were unable to adapt. This nutritional imbalance for grazers was most pronounced in systems optimized for CO 2 uptake through carbon-to-nitrogen ratios well beyond Redfield. A simultaneous enhancement of fisheries production and carbon sequestration via artificial upwelling may thus be difficult to achieve given their opposing stoichiometric constraints. Our study suggest that food quality can be more critical than quantity to maximize food web productivity during shorter-term fertilization of the oligotrophic ocean.

Artificial upwelling has been discussed as a nature-based solution to fertilize currently unproductive areas of the ocean to enhance food web productivity and atmospheric CO2 sequestration. The efficacy of this approach may be closely tied to the nutrient stoichiometry of the upwelled water, as Si-rich water upwelling should benefit the growth of diatoms, who are key players for primary production, carbon export and food web efficiency. With a mesocosm experiment in subtropical waters, we assessed the physiological and functional responses of an oligotrophic phytoplankton community to artificial upwelling under varying Si:N ratios (0.07-1.33). Deep water fertilization led to strongly enhanced primary productivity rates and net autotrophy across Si scenarios. At the community level, Si-rich upwelling temporarily increased primary production and consistently enhanced diatom growth, producing up to 10-fold higher abundances compared to Si-deficient upwelling. At the organism level, contrasting effects were observed. On the one hand, silicification and size of diatom cells remained unaffected by Si:N, which is surprising given the direct dependency of these traits on Si. On the other hand, diatom Chlorophyll a density and carbon density were strongly reduced and particulate matter C:N was elevated under Si-rich upwelling. This suggests a reduced nutritional value for higher trophic levels under high Si:N ratios. Despite these strong qualitative changes under high Si, diatom cells appeared healthy and showed high photosynthetic efficiency. Our findings reveal great physiological plasticity and adaptability in phytoplankton under artificial upwelling, with Si-dependent trade-offs between primary producer quantity and quality.

Marine nitrogen (N2) fixation supports significant primary productivity in the global ocean. However, in one of the most productive regions of the world ocean, the northern Humboldt Upwelling System (HUS), the magnitude and spatial distribution of this process remains poorly characterized. This study presents a spatially resolved dataset of N2 fixation rates across six coastal transects of the northern HUS off Peru (8°S – 16°S) during austral summer. N2 fixation rates were detected throughout the waters column including within the OMZ between 12°S and 16°S. N2 fixation rates were highest where the subsurface Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ, O2 <20 µmol L-1) was most intense and estimated nitrogen (N) loss was highest. There, rates were measured throughout the water column. Hence the vertical and spatial distribution of rates indicates colocation of N2 fixation with N loss in the coastal productive waters of the northern HUS. Despite high phosphate and total dissolvable iron (TdFe) concentrations throughout the study area, N2 fixation was still generally low (1.19 ± 3.81 nmol L-1 d-1) and its distribution could not be directly explained by these two factors. Our results suggest that the distribution was likely influenced by a complex interplay of environmental factors including phytoplankton biomass and organic matter availability, and potentially iron, or other trace metal (co)-limitation of both N2 fixation and primary production. In general, our results support previous conclusions that N2 fixation in the northern HUS plays a minor role as a source of new N and to replenish the regional N loss. The Humboldt Upwelling System (HUS) supports high levels of primary production and has the largest single-stock fishery worldwide. The high fish production is suggested to be related to high trophic transfer efficiency in the HUS. Mucous-mesh grazers (pelagic tunicates and gastropods) are mostly of low nutritious value and might reduce trophic transfer efficiency when they are locally abundant. Unfortunately, little is known about the spatial dynamics of mucous-mesh grazers from Peruvian waters, limiting our understanding of their potential ecological role(s). We provide a spatial assessment of mucous-mesh grazer abundance from the Peruvian shelf in austral summer 2018/2019 along six cross-shelf transects spanning from 8.5 to 16° S latitude. The community was dominated by appendicularians and doliolids. Salps occurred in high abundance but infrequently and pelagic gastropods were mostly restricted to the North. At low latitudes, the abundance of mucous-mesh grazers was higher than some key species of crustacean mesozooplankton. Transects in this region had stronger Ekman-transport, higher temperature, lower surface turbidity and a broader oxygenated upper water layer compared to higher-latitude transects. Small-scale lateral intrusions of upwelled water were potentially associated with high abundances of doliolids at specific stations. The high abundance and estimated ingestion rates of mucous-mesh grazers in the northern HUS suggest that a large flux of carbon from lower trophic levels is shunted to tunicates in recently upwelled water masses. The data provide important information on the ecology of mucous mesh grazers and stress the relevance to increase research effort on investigating their functioning in upwelling systems.

The Arctic is warming 2–3 times faster than the global average, leading to a decrease in Arctic sea ice extent, thickness, and associated changes in sea ice structure. These changes impact sea ice habitat properties and the ice-associated ecosystems. Sea-ice algal blooms provide various algal-derived carbon sources for the bacterial and archaeal communities within the sea ice. Here, we detail the transition of these communities from winter through spring to early summer during the Norwegian young sea ICE (N-ICE2015) expedition. The winter community was dominated by the archaeon Candidatus Nitrosopumilus and bacteria belonging to the Gammaproteobacteria (Colwellia, Kangiellaceae, and Nitrinocolaceae), indicating that nitrogen-based metabolisms, particularly ammonia oxidation to nitrite by Cand. Nitrosopumilus was prevalent. At the onset of the vernal sea-ice algae bloom, the community shifted to the dominance of Gammaproteobacteria (Kangiellaceae, Nitrinocolaceae) and Bacteroidia (Polaribacter), while Cand. Nitrosopumilus almost disappeared. The bioinformatically predicted carbohydrate-active enzymes increased during spring and summer, indicating that sea-ice algae-derived carbon sources are a strong driver of bacterial and archaeal community succession in Arctic sea ice during the change of seasons. This implies a succession from a nitrogen metabolism-based winter community to an algal-derived carbon metabolism-based spring/ summer community.

The warming of our planet is changing the Arctic dramatically. The area covered by sea-ice is shrinking and the ice that is left is younger and thinner. We took part in an expedition to the Arctic, to study how these changes affect organisms living in and under the ice. Following this expedition, we found that storms can more easily break the thinner ice. Storms form cracks in the sea ice, allowing sunlight to pass into the water below, which makes algal growth possible. Algae are microscopic “plants” that grow in water or sea ice. Storms also brought thick heavy snow, which pushed the ice surface below the water. This flooded the snow and created slush. We discovered that this slush is another good habitat for algae. If Arctic sea ice continues to thin, and storms become more common, we expect that these algal habitats will become more important in the future.

The 22 participating scientists from Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the United States covered scientific expertise in (micro-) biology, chemistry, and oceanography. Apart from aerosol and rainwater collection, which was applied to assess atmospheric deposition, sampling was restricted to the water column. Phyto and zooplankton were sampled by vertical net hauls using a plankton net, multinet and a pump system for the filtration of large water volumes to collect different size classes of phytoplankton, followed by DNA and RNA extraction. Phytoplankton was also characterized and quantified onboard by microscopy and flow cytometry. Primary productivity was assessed in incubations in the isotope container using radiocarbon labels. Clonal cultures were established to identify selected key species. Bacterial abundance, community composition and production were also determined onboard. Chemical sampling and analytical parameters, most of which taken from the CTD water sampler, will be measured back in the home labs. The final dataset will cover inorganic nutrients, oxygen concentration, dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, He/Ne ratios for the estimation of basal melt water, δ18O for the contribution of meteoric water, particulate and dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen, optical properties (fluorescence), molecular characterization and radiocarbon age of organic matter. A FerryBox system continuously recorded surface water information on turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, temperature, salinity, colored dissolved organic matter and salinity. At each station, salinity and temperature profiles were recorded by the CTD system and by profiler deployments, which also recorded the spectral light profile in the water column. The vertical material flux was investigated by the deployment of drifting sediment traps, a camera system and a marine snow catcher.

Here we report a red tide of the phototrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum located at the ice-water interface of newly formed pack ice of the high Arctic in early spring. These planktonic ciliates are not able to attach to the ice. Based on observations and theory of fluid dynamics, we propose that convection caused by brine rejection in growing sea ice enabled M. rubrum to bloom at the ice-water interface despite the relative flow between water and ice. We argue that red tides of M. rubrum are more likely to occur under the thinning Arctic sea ice regime.

Arctic sea ice is changing dramatically in the last decades and the consequences for the sea-ice associated ecosystem are difficult to assess. Sea ice is observed to become thinner, younger, and more pond covered. It also allows more light to transmit into and under the ice. Intensive melting might impact the life of sea ice algae within the brine channels. Algal aggregates underneath the sea ice of the central Arctic have been described sporadically, but the frequency and distribution of their occurrence as well as their role in the ecosystem remain unknown due to the lack of large-scale observations. During the TransArc and IceArc expedition of RV Polarstern in the late summers of 2011 and 2012, we observed ice algal aggregates with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) underneath various ice types in the central basins. We observed different types of ice algal aggregates floating underneath and attached to the underside of the sea ice. Maps of the distribution of aggregate abundance could be obtained by complementing the upward looking imagery with synchronously recorded ROV attitude and position data. Besides the analysis of spatial distribution patterns and estimates of total biomass of the algal assemblages, this data allowed for shape analysis and the extraction of size distributions. Our results show, that the floe scale spatial distribution of ice algal aggregates is determined by the ice topography.

The sea ice cover of the Arctic Ocean has changed dramatically in the last decades, and the resulting consequences for the sea-ice-associated ecosystem remain difficult to assess. Algal aggregates underneath sea ice are of great importance for the ice-associated ecosystem and the pelagic-benthic coupling. However, the frequency and distribution of their occurrence is not well quantified. During the IceArc expedition (ARK-27/3) of RV Polarstern in late summer 2012, we observed different types of algal aggregates floating underneath various ice types in the Central Arctic basins. We investigated the spatial distribution of ice algal aggregates and quantified their biomass, using under-ice image surveys obtained by an upward-looking camera on a remotely operated vehicle. On basin scale, filamentous aggregates of Melosira arctica are more frequently found in the inner part of the Central Arctic pack ice, while rounded aggregates mainly formed by pennate diatoms are found closer to the ice edge, under melting sea ice. On the scale of an ice floe, the distribution of algal aggregates in late summer is mainly regulated by the topography of the ice underside, with aggregates accumulating in dome-shaped structures and at the edges of pressure ridges. The average biomass of the aggregates from our sites and season was 0.1–6.0 mg C m−2. However, depending on the approach used, differences in orders of magnitude for biomass estimates may occur. This highlights the difficulties of upscaling observations and comparing results from surveys conducted using different methods or on different spatial scales.

During two consecutive cruises to the Eastern Central Arctic in late summer 2012, we observed floating algal aggregates in the melt-water layer below and between melting ice floes of first-year pack ice. The macroscopic (1 – 15 cm in diameter) aggregates had a mucous consistency and were dominated by typical ice-associated pennate diatoms embedded within the mucous matrix. Aggregates maintained buoyancy and accumulated just above a strong pycnocline that separated meltwater and seawater layers. We were able, for the first time, to obtain quantitative abundance and biomass estimates of these aggregates. Although their biomass and production on a square metre basis was small compared to ice-algal blooms, the floating ice-algal aggregates supported high levels of biological activity on the scale of the individual aggregate. In addition they constituted a food source for the ice-associated fauna as revealed by pigments indicative of zooplankton grazing, high abundance of naked ciliates, and ice amphipods associated with them. During the Arctic melt season, these floating aggregates likely play an important ecological role in an otherwise impoverished near-surface sea ice environment. Our findings provide important observations and measurements of a unique aggregate-based habitat during the 2012 record sea ice minimum year.

The Arctic Ocean is changing dramatically due to the rapid sea ice decrease. The reduction in ice thickness and cover leads to an increase in the amount of light penetrating through the ice. Thus changes in primary production are expected. Nevertheless, our knowledge about how other limiting factors such as nutrients might affect budgets and ratios of sea ice algae and phytoplankton productivity is still limited, especially in the central basins. This study presents recent results from the Central Arctic Ocean collected during late summer and early autumn 2011 and 2012. Primary productivity was measured using the 14C method in the water column, the sea ice and in the melt ponds through a wide variety of ice types and water masses. Additionally PI curves and nutrient enrichment experiments were performed at selected stations in order to infer primary productivity´s limiting factors at the end of the season. Aggregates of sea ice algae found in melt ponds and directly under the ice showed hardly any photoinhibition and presented the highest productivity on small scales . Nevertheless their contribution to the total primary production remains difficult to assess due to their patchiness. Regarding the different ice types, multi-year ice contained more algal biomass than first year ice at the end of the summer, but due to its much larger spatial extent and higher light transmission throughout the season, first year ice is likely to provide a higher proportion of overall sea ice algal productivity in a changing Arctic. The ice-covered water column had in general very low NPP rates probably due to both light and nutrient limitation, and the depth of the mixed layer in the Eurasian basins was limited to 15 m in 2012. Therefore in a summerly ice free Arctic Ocean, the proportional contribution of sea ice and sub ice algae compared to phytoplankton in highly stratified, nitrate limited surface waters is still difficult to predict, and will depend on nutrient transport and mix
