1. First detection of CO$_2$ emission in a Centaur: JWST NIRSpec observations of 39P/Oterma

Abstract

Centaurs are minor solar system bodies with orbits transitioning between those of Trans-Neptunian Scattered Disk objects and Jupiter Family comets. 39P/Oterma is a frequently active Centaur that has recently held both Centaur and JFC classifications and was observed with the JWST NIRSpec instrument on 2022 July 27 UTC while it was 5.82 au from the Sun. For the first time, CO$_2$ gas emission was detected in a Centaur, with a production rate of Q$_{CO_2}$ = (5.96 $\pm$ 0.80) $\times$ 10$^{23}$ molecules s$^{-1}$. This is the lowest detection of CO$_2$ of any Centaur or comet. CO and H$_2$O were not detected down to constraining upper limits. Derived mixing ratios of Q$_{CO}$/Q$_{CO_2}$ $\leq$2.03 and Q$_{CO_2}$/Q$_{H_2O}$ $\geq$0.60 are consistent with CO$_2$ and/or CO outgassing playing large roles in driving the activity, but not water, and show a significant difference between the coma abundances of 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1, another Centaur at a similar heliocentric distance, which may be explained by thermal processing of 39P's surface during its previous Jupiter-family comet orbit. To help contextualize the JWST data we also acquired visible CCD imaging data on two dates in July (Gemini North) and September (Lowell Discovery Telescope) 2022. Image analysis and photometry based on these data are consistent with a point source detection and an estimated effective nucleus radius of 39P in the range of $R_{nuc}= $2.21 to 2.49~km.

Abstract

Background and Objective Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a multifactorial disease, and obesity is the most prevalent risk factor for OSA. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a minimally-invasive procedure used for treating obesity. This prospective study tested the potential benefit of weight loss via an ESG device, endomina®, for reduction of apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in patients with class I obesity and severe OSA. Methods Ten patients with BMI values of 28 to 34.9 kg/m2 and severe OSA underwent ESG and lifestyle management for 6 months. Patients underwent polysomnography before and 6 months after the endoscopic procedure. The primary endpoint was the percentage of AHI reduction six months after the endoscopic procedure. Secondary endpoints were the proportion of patients with AHI reductions of 50% six months after ESG, improvements in respiratory parameters and sleepiness, effectiveness on weight loss, and correlations with decreased AHI. Abstract

Associations between household social needs, acculturation, and emotional health remain understudied, particularly among Latinx mothers. We analyzed baseline survey data from 455 Latinx mothers in a previous study. Using multinomial regression, we examined whether emotional problems and perceived stress were associated with household social needs and acculturation. Almost half the sample reported four or more household social needs. Social needs cumulatively and independently predicted increased odds of frequent emotional problems or perceived stress. Lower acculturation predicted lower odds of frequent emotional problems. There is increased risk for emotional problems and stress in low-income Latinx mothers who experience high social need. Integrated social service and mental health care models may be one way to improve health outcomes. More research is needed to understand how clinical settings can leverage unique cultural protective factors to address the social and emotional health needs of Latinx mothers.

Abstract

The simulation of strongly correlated quantum impurity models is a significant challenge in modern condensed matter physics that has multiple important applications. Thus far, the most successful methods for approaching this challenge involve Monte Carlo techniques that accurately and reliably sample perturbative expansions to any order. However, the cost of obtaining high precision through these methods is high. Recently, tensor train decomposition techniques have been developed as an alternative to Monte Carlo integration. In this study, we apply these techniques to the single-impurity Anderson model at equilibrium by calculating the systematic expansion in power of the hybridization of the impurity with the bath. We demonstrate the performance of the method in a paradigmatic application, examining the first-order phase transition on the infinite dimensional Bethe lattice, which can be mapped to an impurity model through dynamical mean field theory. Our results indicate that using tensor train decomposition schemes allows the calculation of finite-temperature Green's functions and thermodynamic observables with unprecedented accuracy. The methodology holds promise for future applications to frustrated multi-orbital systems, using a combination of partially summed series with other techniques pioneered in diagrammatic and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo.

7. Determination of superexchange interactions for the CuO$_2$ chains in LiCu$_2$O$_2$

Abstract

Starting from \textit{ab-initio} calculations, we derive a five-band Hubbard model to describe the CuO$_2$ chains of LiCu$_2$O$_2$. This model is further simplified to a low-energy effective Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor (NN) $J_1$, and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) $J_2$ interactions, combining perturbation theory, exact diagonalization calculations and Density Matrix Renormalization Group results. For realistic parameters we find the corresponding values of these interactions. The obtained effective model is consistent with a spiral-magnetic ground state as experimentally observed. Using symmetry arguments, the spiral state is a sufficient condition for the ferroelectricity observed in the system.

Abstract

We summarize the comet science provided by surveys. This includes surveys where the detections of comets are an advantageous benefit but were not part of the survey\'s original intent, as well as some pointed surveys where comet science was the goal. Many of the surveys are made using astrophysical and heliophysics assets. The surveys in our scope include those using ground-based as well as space-based telescope facilities. Emphasis is placed on current or recent surveys, and science that has resulted since the publication of Comets II, though key advancements made by earlier surveys (e.g. IRAS, COBE, NEAT, etc.) will be mentioned. The proportionally greater number of discoveries of comets by surveys have yielded in turn larger samples of comet populations and sub-populations for study, resulting in better defined evolutionary trends. While providing an array of remarkable discoveries, most of the survey data has been only cursorily investigated. Abstract

Centaur 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (SW1) is a highly active object orbiting in the transitional Gateway region (Sarid et al. 2019) between the Centaur and Jupiter Family Comet regions. SW1 is unique among the Centaurs in that it experiences quasi-regular major outbursts and produces CO emission continuously; however, the source of the CO is unclear. We argue that due to its very large size (approx. 32 km radius), SW1 is likely still responding, via amorphous water ice (AWI) conversion to crystalline water ice (CWI), to the rapid change in its external thermal environment produced by its dynamical migration from the Kuiper belt to the Gateway Region at the inner edge of the Centaur region at 6 au. It is this conversion process that is the source of the abundant CO and dust released from the object during its quiescent and outburst phases. If correct, these arguments have a number of important predictions testable via remote sensing and in situ spacecraft characterization, including: the quick release on Myr timescales of CO from AWI conversion for any few km-scale scattered disk KBO transiting into the inner system; that to date SW1 has only converted between 50 to 65% of its nuclear AWI to CWI; that volume changes upon AWI conversion could have caused subsidence and cave-ins, but not significant mass wasting or crater loss on SW1; that SW1s coma should contain abundant amounts of CWI CO2-rich icy dust particles; and that when SW1 transits into the inner system within the next 10,000 years, it will be a very different kind of JFC comet., Comment: 29 Pages, 3 Figures, 2 Tables, accepted 16-Sept-2022 by the Planetary Science Journal Corrected proof version 26-Oct-2022

Abstract

Latinx families may be particularly vulnerable to emotional dysfunction, due to higher rates of economic hardship and complex social influences in this population. Little is known about the impact of environmental stressors such as unmet social needs and maternal stress on the emotional health of Latinx children from low-income families. We conducted secondary analyses using survey and biomarker data from 432 Latinx children and mothers collected in a separate study. We used binomial and multinomial logistic regression to test if household social needs, or maternal perceived stress or hair cortisol concentration (HCC), predicted child measures of emotional functioning or child HCC, independent of relevant sociodemographic factors. Approximately 40% of children in the sample had symptoms consistent with emotional dysfunction, and over 37% of households reported five or more social needs. High perceived maternal stress predicted higher odds of child emotional dysfunction (OR = 2.15; 95% CI [1.14, 4.04]; p = 0.01), and high maternal HCC was positively associated with high child HCC (OR = 10.60; 95% CI [4.20, 26.74]; p < 0.01). Most individual household social needs, as well as the level of household social need, were not independently associated with child emotional dysfunction or child HCC. Our findings begin to define a framework for understanding emotional health, stress, and resilience when caring for Latinx children and mothers living with high levels of social need, and the need for integrated mental health and social needs screening and interventions in settings that serve this population.

11. In-gap band in the one-dimensional two-orbital Kanamori-Hubbard model with inter-orbital Coulomb interaction

Abstract

We study the electronic spectral properties at zero temperature of the one-dimensional (1D) version of the degenerate two-orbital Kanamori Hubbard model (KHM), one of the well established frameworks to study transition metal compounds, using state-of-the-art numerical techniques based on the Density Matrix Renormalization Group. While the system is Mott insulating for the half-filled case, as expected for an interacting 1D system, we find interesting and rich structures in the single-particle density of states (DOS) for the hole-doped system. In particular, we find the existence of in-gap states which are pulled down to lower energies from the upper Hubbard band (UHB) with increasing the inter-orbital Coulomb interaction $V$. We analyze the composition of the DOS by projecting it onto different local excitations and we observe that for large dopings these in-gap excitations are formed mainly by inter-orbital holon-doublon (HD) states and their energies follow approximately the HD states in the atomic limit. We observe that the Hund interaction $J$ increases the width of the in-gap band, as expected from the two-particle fluctuations in the Hamiltonian. The observation of a finite density of states within the gap between the Hubbard bands for this extended 1D model indicates that these systems present a rich excitation spectra which could help us understand the microscopic physics behind multi-orbital compounds.

Abstract

Using data from the Infrared Array Camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope, we present photometric observations of a sample of 100 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) beyond 2.2 {\mu}m. These observations, collected with two broad-band filters centered at 3.6 and 4.5 {\mu}m, were done in order to study the surface composition of TNOs, which are too faint to obtain spectroscopic measurements. With this aim, we have developed a method for the identification of different materials that are found on the surfaces of TNOs. In our sample, we detected objects with colors that are consistent with the presence of small amounts of water and were able to distinguish between surfaces that are predominately composed of complex organics and amorphous silicates. We found that 86% of our sample have characteristics that are consistent with a certain amount of water ice, and the most common composition (73% of the objects) is a mixture of water ice, amorphous silicates, and complex organics. 23% of our sample may include other ices such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane or methanol. Additionally, only small objects seem to have surfaces dominated by silicates. This method is a unique tool for the identification of complex organics and to obtain the surface composition of extremely faint objects. 16. Novel subbands in the doped two-orbital Kanamori-Hubbard model

Abstract

We calculate and resolve with unprecedented detail the local density of states (DOS) and momentum-dependent spectral functions at zero temperature of one of the key models for strongly correlated electron materials, the degenerate two-orbital Kanamori-Hubbard model, by means of a highly optimized Dynamical Mean Field Theory which uses the Density Matrix Renormalization Group as the impurity solver. When the system is hole doped, and in the presence of a finite interorbital Coulomb interaction we find the emergence of a novel holon-doublon in-gap subband which is split by the Hund's coupling. We also observe new interesting features in the DOS like the splitting of the lower Hubbard band into a coherent narrowly dispersing peak around the Fermi energy, and another subband which evolves with the chemical potential. We characterize the main transitions giving rise to each subband by calculating the response functions of specific projected operators and comparing with the energies in the atomic limit, obtaining excellent agreement. Abstract

Objective: To describe and explore pediatric ambulatory video visit use by patient characteristics during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: We conducted an explanatory sequential mixed methods study with integration at the design and methods level. Phase 1 was a cross-sectional analysis of general and specialty pediatric ambulatory encounters to profile the use of video visits by patient characteristics. We performed descriptive analyses for each variable of interest and estimated a multivariable logistic regression model to analyze factors associated with the odds of having a video visit. Phase 2 was a qualitative exploration using semi-structured interviews with healthcare team members to understand the contextual factors influencing video visit usage. We used an interview guide to solicit information related to general perceptions about ambulatory video visits, reactions to the quantitative phase data, and strategies for optimizing equitable reach of video visits. Data were analyzed using a combination of deductive and inductive analysis. Results: Among the 5,464 pediatric ambulatory encounters completed between March 11 and June 30, 2020, 2,127 were video visits. Patient factors associated with lower odds of having a video visit rather than an in-person visit included being Spanish-speaking (aOR 0.27, 95% CI 0.20-0.37) and other non-English-speaking (aOR 0.50, 95% CI 0.34-0.75) in comparison to English-speaking. Patients with public insurance also had a lower odds of having a video visit in comparison to privately insured patients (aOR 0.77, 95% CI 0.67-0.88). Qualitative interviews identified five solution-based themes: (1) Promoting video visits in a way that reaches all patient families; (2) Offering video visits to all patient families; (3) Mitigating digital literacy barriers; (4) Expanding health system resources to support families' specific needs; and (5) Engaging and empowering health system personnel to expand video visit access. Conclusion: We identified differences in pediatric ambulatory video visit use by patient characteristics, with lower odds of video visit use among non-English-speaking and publicly insured patients. The mixed-methods approach allowed for the perspectives of our interview participants to contextualize the finding and lead to suggestions for improvement. Both our findings and the approach can be used by other health systems to ensure that all patients and families receive equal video visit access.

Abstract

Comet 8P/Tuttle is a Nearly Isotropic Comet (NIC), whose physical properties are poorly known and could be different from those of Ecliptic Comets (EC) owing to their different origin. Two independent observations have shown that 8P has a bilobate nucleus. Our goal is to determine the physical properties of the nucleus (size, shape, thermal inertia, albedo) and coma (water and dust) of 8P/Tuttle. We observed the inner coma of 8P with the infrared spectrograph (IRS) and the infrared camera (MIPS) of the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST). We obtained one spectrum (5-40 $\mu$m) on 2 November 2007 and a set of 19 images at 24 $\mu$m on 22-23 June 2008 sampling the nucleus rotational period. The data were interpreted using thermal models for the nucleus and the dust coma, and considering 2 possible shape models of the nucleus derived from respectively Hubble Space Telescope visible and Arecibo radar observations. We favor a nucleus shape model composed of 2 contact spheres with respective radii of 2.7+/-0.1 km and 1.1+/-0.1 km and a pole orientation with RA=285+/-12 deg and DEC=+20+/-5 deg. The nucleus has a thermal inertia in the range 0-100 J/K/m^2/s^0.5 and a R-band geometric albedo of 0.042+/-0.008. The water production rate amounts to 1.1+/-0.2x10^28~molecules/s at 1.6 AU from the Sun pre-perihelion, which corresponds to an active fraction of 9%. At the same distance, the $\epsilon f \rho$ quantity amounts to 310+/-34 cm at 1.6~AU, and reaches 325+/-36 cm at 2.2~AU post-perihelion. The dust grain temperature is estimated to 258+/-10 K, which is 37 K larger than the thermal equilibrium temperature at 1.6 AU. This indicates that the dust grains contributing to the thermal infrared flux have a typical size of 10 $\mu$m. Abstract

The white paper discusses Arecibo Observatory's plan for facility improvements and activities over the next decade. The facility improvements include: (a) improving the telescope surface, pointing and focusing to achieve superb performance up to ~12.5 GHz; (b) equip the telescope with ultrawide-band feeds; (c) upgrade the instrumentation with a 4 GHz bandwidth high dynamic range digital link and a universal backend and (d) augment the VLBI facility by integrating the 12m telescope for phase referencing. These upgrades to the Arecibo telescope are critical to keep the national facility in the forefront of research in radio astronomy while maintaining its dominance in radar studies of near-Earth asteroids, planets and satellites. In the next decade, the Arecibo telescope will play a synergistic role with the upcoming facilities such as ngVLA, SKA and the now commissioned FAST telescope. Abstract

BackgroundDonor human milk supplementation for healthy newborns has increased. Racial-ethnic disparities in supplementation have been described in the neonatal intensive care unit but not in the well newborn setting.Research aimThe aim of this study was to identify maternal characteristics associated with donor human milk versus formula supplementation in the well newborn unit.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study includes dyads of well newborns and their mothers (N = 678) who breastfed and supplemented with formula (n = 372) or donor human milk (n = 306) during the birth hospitalization at a single hospital in the midwestern United States. Maternal characteristics and infant feeding type were extracted from medical records. Chi-square and logistic regression were used to examine associations between maternal characteristics and feeding type.ResultsNonwhite women were less likely to use donor human milk. Compared to non-Hispanic white women, the largest disparity was with Hispanic (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.28, 95% CI [0.12, 0.65]), then non-Hispanic black (adjusted OR = 0.32, 95% CI [0.13, 0.76]) and Asian women (adjusted OR = 0.34, 95% CI [0.16, 0.74]). Lower donor human milk use was associated with primary language other than English and public versus private insurance.ConclusionThe goal of improving public health through breastfeeding promotion may be inhibited without targeting donor human milk programs to these groups. Identifying the drivers of these disparities is necessary to inform person-centered interventions that address the needs of women with diverse backgrounds.

Abstract

ObjectivesWritten discharge guidance for hospitalized pediatric patients should include language-appropriate key elements to ensure positive discharge outcomes. Our objective in this study was to determine the completeness of written pediatric discharge guidance and to test the hypothesis that Spanish-speaking families with limited English proficiency (LEP) receive less complete written discharge guidance than English-speaking families.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective review of written discharge guidance provided to 100 English- and 100 Spanish-speaking families at an urban nonfreestanding children's hospital to assess the inclusion of key elements: follow-up plan, contingency plan, telephone contact, discharge medications, discharge diagnosis, and hospital course. We compared the completeness of discharge guidance (number of elements provided among number of applicable elements) between English- versus Spanish-speaking families.ResultsWhen evaluating discharge guidance for the presence of key elements in any language, there was no significant difference between English- and Spanish-speaking families. However, the mean completeness of language-appropriate discharge guidance for English- and Spanish-speaking families was 87.8% (95% confidence interval [CI] 84.4%-91.1%) and 16.0% (95% CI 11.5%-20.4%), respectively. The ordinal logistic regression examining the association between the number of key element deficits and English- (reference group) versus Spanish-speaking families demonstrated an adjusted odds ratio of 339.8 (95% CI 112.4-1027.5).ConclusionsFew Spanish-speaking families with LEP receive written discharge guidance in their preferred language. Complete, language-appropriate discharge guidance was identified as an area for improvement efforts to work toward improving care provided to families with LEP.

28. Metal-insulator transition in the hybridized two-orbital Hubbard model revisited

Abstract

In this work we study the two-orbital Hubbard model on a square lattice in the presence of hybridization between nearest-neighbor orbitals and a crystal-field splitting. We use a highly reliable numerical technique based on the density matrix renormalization group to solve the dynamical mean field theory self-consistent impurity problem. We find that the orbital mixing always leads to a finite local density states at the Fermi energy in both orbitals when at least one band is metallic. When one band is doped, and the chemical potential lies between the Hubbard bands in the other band, the coherent quasiparticle peak in this orbital has an exponential behavior with the Hubbard interaction $U$.

Abstract

We implement an efficient numerical method to calculate response functions of complex impurities based on the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) and use it as the impurity-solver of the Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT). This method uses the correction vector to obtain precise Green's functions on the real frequency axis at zero temperature. By using a self-consistent bath configuration with very low entanglement, we take full advantage of the DMRG to calculate dynamical response functions paving the way to treat large effective impurities such as those corresponding to multi-orbital interacting models and multi-site or multi-momenta clusters. This method leads to reliable calculations of non-local self energies at arbitrary dopings and interactions and at any energy scale., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

30. Emergent low-energy bound states in the two-orbital Hubbard model

Abstract

A repulsive Coulomb interaction between electrons in different orbitals in correlated materials can give rise to bound quasiparticle states. We study the non-hybridized two-orbital Hubbard model with intra (inter)-orbital interaction $U$ ($U_{12}$) and different band widths using an improved dynamical mean field theory numerical technique which leads to reliable spectra on the real energy axis directly at zero temperature. We find that a finite density of states at the Fermi energy in one band is correlated with the emergence of well defined quasiparticle states at excited energies $\Delta=U-U_{12}$ in the other band. These excitations are inter-band holon-doublon bound states. At the symmetric point $U=U_{12}$, the quasiparticle peaks are located at the Fermi energy, leading to a simultaneous and continuous Mott transition settling a long-standing controversy.

Abstract

We report new lightcurves and phase functions for nine Jupiter-family comets (JFCs). They were observed in the period 2004-2015 with various ground telescopes as part of the Survey of Ensemble Physical Properties of Cometary Nuclei (SEPPCoN) as well as during devoted observing campaigns. We add to this a review of the properties of 35 JFCs with previously published rotation properties. The photometric time-series were obtained in Bessel R, Harris R and SDSS r' filters and were absolutely calibrated using stars from the Pan-STARRS survey. This specially-developed method allowed us to combine data sets taken at different epochs and instruments with absolute-calibration uncertainty down to 0.02 mag. We used the resulting time series to improve the rotation periods for comets 14P/Wolf, 47P/Ashbrook-Jackson, 94P/Russell, and 110P/Hartley 3 and to determine the rotation rates of comets 93P/Lovas and 162P/Siding-Spring for the first time. In addition to this, we determined the phase functions for seven of the examined comets and derived geometric albedos for eight of them. We confirm the known cut-off in bulk densities at $\sim$0.6 g $\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$ if JFCs are strengthless. Using the model of Davidsson (2001) for prolate ellipsoids with typical density and elongations, we conclude that none of the known JFCs require tensile strength larger than 10-25 Pa to remain stable against rotational instabilities. We find evidence for an increasing linear phase function coefficient with increasing geometric albedo. Abstract

BackgroundThis study aimed to describe parental perceptions of the causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in an ethnically diverse sample and explore whether these perceptions relate to treatment choices.MethodsThe sample consisted of White (n = 224), Hispanic (n = 85), and Asian (n = 21) mothers of a child with ASD. A mixed methods approach was used in this secondary analysis focusing on parental perceptions about the causes of ASD and the relationship of these to utilization of services and treatment.ResultsEnvironmental and genetic factors were most often believed to be the cause or one of the causes of ASD by mothers across all ethnic groups studied. Asian mothers were more likely to cite multiple causes. Environmental causes were associated with receiving 20 or more hours of autism-related services per week, whereas belief in environmental exposures and vaccines and medications as causes were associated with complementary-alternative medicine (CAM) use.ConclusionOur findings suggest that ethnic differences in autism causal beliefs and treatment choices may exist. Future research should be conducted to specifically confirm the findings, to understand parental motivation behind their service and treatment choices, and to gain more insight into the types, usage, and sources of CAM treatments. Clinicians can use parental autism causal beliefs in discussions about treatment recommendations.

Abstract

Following a new approach, we prepared a nanoink with two separate photothermally responsive absorption bands. One is the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption of gold nanoparticles (AuNP, d =17 nm), the second is the absorption band of two cyanine (Cy) dyes, Cy7-C6 or Cy7-C11, grafted to the AuNP surface through thiolated bridges of different lengths: the close proximity to the Au surface induces full quenching of the Cy fluorescence, resulting in thermal relaxation on irradiation. Attempts to full coat AuNP with the lipophilic Cy7-C6 and Cy7-C11 lead to precipitation from aqueous solutions. We thus prepared AuNP with partial pegylation (30, 50, or 70%), using a long chain thiol-terminated PEG bearing a -COOH function. Addition until saturation of either Cy7-C6 or Cy7-C11 to the partially pegylated AuNP gave the AuNP@Cy/PEGX% hybrids (X = 30, 50, 70) that are stable in water and in the water/alcohol mixtures used to prepare the nanoinks. Further overcoating of AuNP@Cy7-C6/PEG50% with PAH (polyallylamine hydrochloride) avoids LSPR hybridization in the dry nanoink printouts, that present two separate bands. When irradiated with laser sources near their absorption maxima, the printouts of the AuNP@Cy7-C6/PEG50%@PAH nanoink respond on two channels, giving different temperature increases depending on the irradiation wavelength.

43. Size and albedo distributions of asteroids in cometary orbits using WISE data

Abstract

We study the distributions of effective diameter ($D$), beaming parameter ($\eta$), and visible geometric albedo ($p_V$) of asteroids in cometry orbits (ACOs) populations, derived from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Explorer (WISE) observations, and compare these with the same, independently determined properties of the comets. The near-Earth asteroid thermal model (NEATM) is used to compute the $D$, $p_V$ and $\eta$. We obtained $D$ and $p_V$ for 49 ACOs in Jupiter family cometary orbits (JF-ACOs) and 16 ACOs in Halley-type orbits (Damocloids). We also obtained $\eta$ for 45 of them. All but three JF-ACOs (95% of the sample) present a low albedo compatible with a cometary origin. The $p_V$ and $\eta$ distributions of both ACO populations are very similar. For the entire sample of ACOs, the mean geometric albedo is $\bar{p_V} = 0.05 \pm 0.02$, ($\bar{p_V} = 0.05 \pm 0.01$ and $\bar{p_V} =0.05 \pm 0.02$ for JF-ACOs and Damocloids, respectively) compatible with a narrow albedo distribution similar to that of the Jupiter family comets (JFCs), with a $\bar{p_V} \sim 0.04$. The $\bar{\eta} =1.0 \pm 0.2$. We find no correlations between $D$, $p_V$ , or $\eta$. We compare the cumulative size distribution (CSD) of ACOs, Centaurs, and JFCs. Although the Centaur sample contains larger objects, the linear parts in their log-log plot of the CSDs presents a similar cumulative exponent ($\beta = 1.85 \pm 0.30$ and $1.76 \pm 0.35$, respectively). The CSD for Damocloids presents a much shallower exponent $\beta = 0.89 \pm 0.17$. The CSD for JF-ACOs is shallower and shifted towards larger diameters with respect to the CSD of active JFCs, which suggests that the mantling process has a size dependency whereby large comets tend to reach an inactive stage faster than small ones. Finally, the population of JF-ACOs is comparable in number that of JFCs, although there are more tens-km JF-ACOs than JFCs., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, A&A in press

Abstract

The dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) has become a standard technique for the study of strongly correlated models and materials overcoming some of the limitations of density functional approaches based on local approximations. An important step in this method involves the calculation of response functions of a multiorbital impurity problem which is related to the original model. Recently there has been considerable progress in the development of techniques based on the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and related matrix product states (MPS) implying a substantial improvement to previous methods. Abstract

We have searched for periodic variations of the electronic recoil event rate in the (2-6) keV energy range recorded between February 2011 and March 2012 with the XENON100 detector, adding up to 224.6 live days in total. Following a detailed study to establish the stability of the detector and its background contributions during this run, we performed an un-binned profile likelihood analysis to identify any periodicity up to 500 days. We find a global significance of less than 1 sigma for all periods suggesting no statistically significant modulation in the data. While the local significance for an annual modulation is 2.8 sigma, the analysis of a multiple-scatter control sample and the phase of the modulation disfavor a dark matter interpretation. The DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation interpreted as a dark matter signature with axial-vector coupling of WIMPs to electrons is excluded at 4.8 sigma., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures
