Abstract

A 26-year-old male with a past medical history of intravenous opioid abuse was admitted with the diagnosis of double valve infective endocarditis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. Imaging, excluding the head, was indicative of systemic arterial embolization, as abscesses had developed in the retroperitoneum and prostate. There was evidence of splenic infarct, and the presence of extensive pulmonary infiltrates indicative of showering septic foci from the heart. Antibiotic therapy was started and a transesophageal echocardiogram demonstrated mitral and tricuspid valve vegetations with a preserved ejection fraction. Fortunately, the valvular repair was successful and artificial valves were not needed. The patient had an uncomplicated postoperative course in the intensive care unit and was transferred back to the ward in stable condition. He remained on the ward for six weeks due to his unfunded status until his antibiotic course and physical rehabilitation were completed.

20. Examining Student Perceptions of Tobacco Policy Enforcement on College Campuses in Texas

Abstract

Background: Colleges across the country are adopting tobacco-free policies to prevent and decrease tobacco use among college-aged young adults. Aims: This study examines differences between nontobacco, single-product, and polytobacco users' perceptions of the importance of enforcing tobacco-free policies, support for various enforcement strategies, and success of policy enforcement on campuses. Method: A Kruskal-Wallis test was conducted to examine group differences on the importance of enforcing polices, support for enforcement strategies, and success of policy enforcement among 10,351 students attending 10 Texas colleges. Results: Findings show significant group differences on all dependent variables. Post hoc tests indicated that nontobacco users reported the most favorable responses, followed by single-product users, then polytobacco users. Discussion: Despite group differences, findings show all students feel it is important to enforce tobacco policies and support enforcement strategies but believe current campus enforcement efforts are only moderately successful. Conclusions: Findings may prompt administrators to adopt policy enforcement strategies to curb tobacco use on campuses.

21. Relational Victimization and Maladjustment among Hispanic Early Adolescents: Moderating Effects of Social Support

Abstract

Relational victimization can have negative implications for early adolescents; yet, few studies have examined relational victimization among Hispanic early adolescents. This study examined (a) the concurrent associations between relational victimization and depressive symptoms and conduct problems and (b) the moderating roles of three sources of social support (parent, teacher, and peer) in the aforementioned associations. Participants were 189 eleven- to 15-year-old (M = 12.13, SD = 0.95) Hispanic students. Results from hierarchical regression analyses indicated that relational victimization was positively associated with both outcomes. Furthermore, parent support buffered the relational victimization-depressive symptoms association, but exacerbated the relational victimization-conduct problems association. Similarly, peer support exacerbated the relational victimization-depressive symptoms association and did not moderate the relational victimization-conduct problems association. Finally, teacher support did not moderate either association. Findings highlight the complexities of examining various sources of social support, which may not necessarily mitigate Hispanic students' experiences of relational victimization.

22. Adolescent Adjustment Problems Mediate the Association between Racial Discrimination and School Connectedness

Abstract

Background: Whereas previous research suggests a positive association between racial discrimination and early adolescent adjustment problems, few studies examine the relationship between discrimination and school connectedness as it relates to adjustment problems among Hispanic early adolescents. In this study, we examined if depressive symptoms and conduct problems would mediate the concurrent association between perceived racial discrimination and school connectedness among Hispanic early adolescents. Methods: Participants for this study were 192 11-15-year-old (M = 12.1; SD = .95) Hispanic middle school students. Using multigroup path analyses, we examined the indirect association between racial discrimination and school connectedness through adjustment problems, and the equivalence of the associations across girls and boys. Results: Racial discrimination was positively associated with depressive symptoms and conduct problems for both girls and boys. In turn, depressive symptoms were negatively associated with school connectedness for girls only, whereas conduct problems were negatively associated with school connectedness for boys only. Conclusions: In consideration of study findings, school personnel should be mindful of Hispanic adolescents who display depressive symptoms or conduct problems, as they may be highly vulnerable to lower levels of school connectedness when experiencing racial discrimination.

Abstract

This work presents a method for the measurement of the accuracy of evidential artifact extraction and categorization tasks in digital forensic investigations. Instead of focusing on the measurement of accuracy and errors in the functions of digital forensic tools, this work proposes the application of information retrieval measurement techniques that allow the incorporation of errors introduced by tools and analysis processes. This method uses a `gold standard' that is the collection of evidential objects determined by a digital investigator from suspect data with an unknown ground truth. This work proposes that the accuracy of tools and investigation processes can be evaluated compared to the derived gold standard using common precision and recall values. Two example case studies are presented showing the measurement of the accuracy of automated analysis tools as compared to an in-depth analysis by an expert. 35. Health-Promoting Potential of Mandarin Pomace Extracts Enriched with Phenolic Compounds.

Abstract

The aim of this work was to assess the effect of in vitro human digestion on the chemical composition (carbohydrates and phenolic compounds) and bioactivity of hydro-alcoholic-acid pomace extracts from two mandarin varieties (Clemenule and Ortanique) by measuring their antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-glycative, hypolipidemic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The phenolic compound profile showed that nobiletin was the main flavonoid found in the extracts and digests of Clemenule pomace and extract, while isosinensetin/sinensetin/tangeretin were the ones in the Ortanique samples. The digests of Clemenule and Ortanique extracts showed Folin reaction values of 9.74 and 9.20 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g of sample, ABTS values of 83.2 and 91.7 µmol Trolox equivalents (TE)/g of sample, and ORAC-FL values of 142.8 and 891.6 µmol TE/g of sample, respectively. Extracts (50–500 µg/mL) inhibited intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation in CCD-18Co cells under physiological and oxidative-induced conditions. Clemenule and Ortanique extract digests showed IC50 values of 13.50 and 11.07 mg/mL for α-glucosidase, 28.79 and 69.64 mg/mL for α-amylase, and 16.50 and 12.77 mg/mL for AGEs, and 2.259 ± 0.267 and 0.713 ± 0.065 mg/mL for pancreatic lipase inhibition, respectively. Ortanique extract (250–1000 µg/mL) inhibited the production of nitric oxide in RAW264.7 macrophages under inflammation-induced conditions, and intracellular ROS formation. In conclusion, altogether, the results supported the potential of mandarin extracts to be used as health promoters by reducing the risk of non-communicable chronic diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. Perceived Weight Discrimination and School Connectedness among Youth: Does Teacher Support Play a Protective Role?

Abstract

Bsckground: Weight discrimination has been associated with poor academic performance and decreased school attendance. Little is known about weight discrimination and students' feelings of belonging to their school. This study examined the association between weight discrimination and school connectedness among adolescents. Teacher support was examined as a protective factor. Methods: Middle school students (N = 639; 57% white; Mean age = 12.16 years) completed a health behaviors survey. Weight discrimination from peers and/or good friends was dichotomized into never versus experienced weight discrimination. The mean of 5 school connectedness items assessed level of school connectedness. Teacher support was measured by taking the mean of 4 teacher support items. Hierarchical linear regression was used to examine the association between weight discrimination and school connectedness. Teacher support was tested as a moderator. Results: Weight discrimination was associated with lower levels of school connectedness (p < 0.05). Teacher support was associated with higher levels of school connectedness (p < 0.001) but did not moderate the association between weight discrimination and school connectedness. Conclusion: The association between weight discrimination and low levels of school connectedness is important as students spend most of their time at school and should benefit from the positive effects of feeling connected to school.

Abstract

Considering elastomers nanocomposites, most of the works are focused on natural rubber, styrene butadiene rubber and rubber blends, while few of them deal with nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR). This article presents the reinforcing effect of two raw sodic montmorillonites (Mts) and one organoclay on NBR matrix prepared by the latex compounding method. Raw Mts increase the mechanical properties of neat matrices. A pseudoplastic behavior is observed with the incorporation of clays into the NBR latex, indicating interactions between polymer chains and clay sheets, in agreement with the results of zeta potential analysis. X-ray diffraction evaluates changes in the interlayer distance of the clay, indicating the NBR intercalation phenomenon in all cases. Matrices with different clay proportions present variations in the mechanical properties, depending if the aggregation phenomenon is promoted. Morphological analysis of clays and nanocomposites as well as thermal analysis were performed.
